I'm a newbie watcher of this show, just finished watching the show last week and I couldn't stop myself from loving this couple. Thank you everyone for all the news and update

I don't know why but Bo gum's latest interview makes me want to keep rewatching the kissing scene all over again..

To me the equation is simple. If you really love someone THAT much, being there for that person and their feelings should always come first before anything else. Okay granted JH didn't know that DS got flashed at the restaurant but he saw her first crying at the stairs and he was just freaking watching a movie when she went alone to the concert. But he hesitated and weighed everything too much.

To me, it just seems like JH wanted to only protect his heart from being disappointed but what about DS then? She was supposed to be the love of his life but how many times have we seen him threw her under the bus?

CT also sacrificed his feelings but we never saw him treating DS poorly because he actually cares about her feelings. Like even if it wasn't their fate, he still wanted to care for her as a friend.

And I think DS has always liked CT. Remember the scene when DR asked her if instead of someone who likes her, is there anyone that she likes and CT just came out of nowhere and that smile on her face when she saw him? She doesn't even realize it but she has always liked him. She simply confused those feelings with her naturally caring instincts.

And the fact that she never moved on from those feelings actually tells us so much. Like she was basically done with JH the moment she thought he gave the shirt to JB but she somehow couldn't give up on CT the same way. And I feel that she was always waiting for a chance to confess her feelings like when she contemplated going to the concert and when she looked distraughted after learning that CT has actually been on so many blind dates and has completely moved on from his feelings for her(which we know isn't true but she didn't). She still liked him even when it seemed like he no longer likes her and to me that is just the ultimatum. You don’t give up on love, ever. Even if the odds are stacked against you.

Well, im on the stage where i found my self, EMPTY. I miss all cast from reply 1988 !

i try to remember and back track my self when the first time im shipping my choi taek and deok sun. I think there was one scene, when i realize, i need to watch the girl first, not the husband, from 4 boys. i cant put all my hope with bogum since im fans of him from IRY drama.

So, i watch all reply series first. And learn how to searching the real husband, and i dont need to watch the husband candidate act or the sweet scene he made, but THE GIRL INTEREST, THE GIRL ACT TOWARD THE BOYS. most shipper blind with the boys act toward the girl. Meanwhile this is reply series, the one who giving us the husband is Shi won, na jung, deok sun. If we cant see the girl interest, how exactly you will find the real husband?

most scene i love and ship ds with choi taek:

1. When DS ask taek to marry her (i keep thinking about this scene, like the past reply series but i found my self little bit distracted with JH and DS scene, you know ds have interest with him first before realize her feeling)

2. I feel happy tk ds scene (because i love bogum lol) but i never realize how ds always take care choi taek.

3. The scene where DS awkward and nervous, after choi taek holding her hand, and lean on his head, like they cuddle. that the climax i ship ds and tk as couple. So i flashback how DS never let her friends know choi taek in person, she never ever give her bestfriends signature. Meanwhile her friends always ship her with other man. Its not action like she want protect choi taek,but she dont want to share her precious person in her life to other, especially for HER GIRLFRIENDS. 

i started to think bogum is the mix from previous reply series,when i know him play as baduk player, but bogum also close with DS family. The husband always close with the girl family.

so before you judge and curse the writer, or became shipper. you must learn how Reply series playing to confuse viewers. I think this one the most important. Its fun to watch reply series, if you learn from the previous ones. Because if we see from POV the husband candidate, we might end up with mislead. The writer always love to mislead, even from her previous project. 

I want to add: LMY and KJH is best choice for the future ds and tk. They got viewers more confuse with the different future scene. Lol.

Added: JH knew ds "liking" sw, but JH still close with ds, never even ignore her,maube Because JH never think sw as the strong candidate, even he know ds "like" sw so much back then. The reason why he choose to hesitated by himself for tk ds, because TK is strong candidate, the way JH saw tk ds moment, i feel JH step back not because tk is precious to him. But JH feel he cant make himself IN between ds and tk. you see how close and strong tk ds every scene. I feel JH choose to hesitated, like you see how ds and tk always fun together, caring, and support each other. Its the habit that JH cant even give to her, even he tried, its not his true self. Ds will never see him as man, because ds personality need someone who always take care of her, not to fake like he dont care. and the way jh saw DS habit to tk, is the reason he step back. Question 18: Why are you so sure DS’ first love ≠ SW? 
Answer: Why was I so sure that TK = Husband?

Long before shippers FROM BOTH SIDES of the aisle discovered who the Future Husband was, I called it for Taek. I understand why the JH shippers accused me of being delusional. They had after all staked their raison d’etre on their guy. But I totally didn’t understand why the TK shippers were hesitant at all. I’m reminded of the words of one of my “pop” idols, Dag Hammarskjöld. He said, “Never for the sake of peace and quiet deny your own experience or convictions.” He kept a diary, like DS, which he began when he was 20 years old.  If you’ve time to spare from kdramas, I highly recommend it. Markings (1961). 

I am convinced DS’ first love ≠ SW. There are lots of reasons but for brevity, I’ll choose three primary ones: Timeline + DS’ reaction + Scriptwriter’s joke.

A.  First, the timeline. For many of those opposing First Love = TK, their stumbling block is the timeline. They argue that DS started to fall in love with SW in August. That’s factually incorrect. DS was informed of SW’s supposed CRUSH on her in August but she did NOT fall in love with him in August. There's a big difference there. 

Those opposing First Love = TK also insist that DS liked SW beginning of August 4, 1988 because that was when the wire-tapping broadcast incident occurred live on TV. This argument is factually incomplete. They ignore the reference to August 15, 1988 in the script. 

Thanks to @mangachickava who researched about this, we were able to find out that:  

1) DS had in fact revealed the date that they were eating at the dukbokki restaurant in Episode 3. DS said that they had TWO MONTHS to practice their dance routine before the October 15 field trip. They were at the dukbokki restaurant on August 15. 

2) August 15 is a national holiday. It’s SK’s Independence Day, which commemorates Koreans liberation from the Japanese occupation in 1945. If you pay close attention to the story, the scriptwriter/director actually embedded two POLITICALLY INCORRECT slurs about the Japanese in this segment. Did you see that? 

First, politically incorrect joke: The father stuck his chopsticks into the potatoes. 

According to @hafunohane, that action was meant as a death wish in Asian cultures. I thought the father was obliquely insulting the Japanese colonizers. 

Second politically incorrect joke: DS horrified everybody with her Japanese geisha look. lol. That’s another slur at the expense of the Japanese occupiers. 

For me, these two dates, August 4 and August 15, served as parameters to the SW’s introduction to the narrative. It’s WRONG to reject one and accept only one as point of reference. @mangachickava was right that the scriptwriter/director duo was hinting at us to pay close attention. 

You see, everything in this drama, from start to finish, can be organized to present an ACCURATE CHRONOLOGY of the events in DS’ life in 1988. That is, everything EXCEPT for this day when DS was informed ERRONEOUSLY by her friends that SW liked her. This day was obscured and blurred intentionally by the scriptwriter/director duo. 

Their intention is significant. There's a point here that they wanted the viewers to get.

Like historians, we appreciate a timeline of events because a timeline offers cause-and-effect. We see how events overlap and influence other events. But in this story, this “fateful” moment when DS learned of SW “supposed” crush on her, the date was purposely kept nebulous. Why? 

Because that day when she was informed of SW's "liking" her was IRRELEVANT to her. 

All the other events that happened in her life – for instance, her Olympics participation, her grandma’s visit, even TK’s baduk victories, the manitto snafu, the first snow fall, the concerts she attended, her first kiss --- were given EXACT months and dates in the story because they were IMPORTANT to her. They were moments in her life that were significant enough to be remembered and be given a specific time in her life. She even wrote about some of these days on her diary. Like the chocolate confession on Sept 24, 1988. 

But this date when she was learned of SW’s crush on her wasn’t even worth a blip on her diary. If SW = DS’ first love, then she should have been over-the-moon about this. She should have written about it in her diary. But nada. There was no mention of it. The exact date of its occurrence in August was uncertain. The writer only gave us vague parameters ~ It could have occurred sometime after August 4 on the day of the bizarre wire-tapped incident and before August 15 ~~

There was no exact date. That’s the point of the scriptwriter. It was NOT a milestone. 

Moreover, as if to emphasize the IRRELEVANCE of the discovery of SW’s crush on her, the scriptwriter made the two dates, August 4 and August 15, FACTUALLY INACCURATE in the script. The scriptwriter deliberately created plot holes with them.

Didn’t you notice that? Like this:

Yes, the wire-tapping incident happened on August 4, but school could haven’t started for DS and the boys because August 4 was in the middle of the summer break. 
Yes, DS was at the dukbokki restaurant on August 15, but there shouldn’t have been school on that day because it was a public holiday.

Those plot holes or inconsistencies were deliberately done to show how indistinct and immaterial it was to DS' future that SW liked her in August. It was "time bubble".

Timeline is proof that DS’ first love ≠ SW. 

B. Now, let’s move on to DS’ reaction to the news. 

I’m going to repeat myself here because I don't think people understood me the first time around.

1) When her friends said that SW liked her and they were congratulating her for catching a boyfriend, her face did NOT register happiness AT ALL.

Her facial reaction should trigger warning bells to the First Love = SW. SW was a catch. He was tall, handsome, solicitous and responsible. He was the President of the Student Council. DS’ face should have brightened up. 

These were the facial reactions I was expecting with the happy news that SW liked her: mouth widening into a smile, eyes sparkling, crow-feet wrinkles by the eyes appearing, eyebrows slightly raised, cheekbones going up.

Instead, this is what registered on her: Dismay. 

- she swallowed [sign of nervousness, anxiety]
- her eyes stared blankly in front [“oh lord, I can’t believe this.”], 
- nostrils flared [nostrils widen because a person is taking a deep breath, usually a sign of somebody making an internal decision], 
- chin jutting out [her jaw is hardening, not happy]
- cheeks immobile [not happy]
- eyebrows wrinkled in a frown [not happy]

That wasn’t a normal reaction to hearing about a crush. 

Furthermore, look at the choice of background music.  “I guess I have fallen in love.” The lyrics don’t express elation. The words “I guess” indicated more a resignation, a burden that must be endured.  

2) That night, she sat in front of her study desk FRETTING.  Rewatch that scene again. It was pretty brief, about 5 seconds long. At 4:23. Observe her body language. 

She was jiggling her legs. [signs of nervousness, tension, anxiety]
She scratched her head vigorously [denotes irritation, confusion, quandary. “oh lord, what will I do with this mess.”]
She twirled and pulled her hair [her mannerism when she’s bothered/undecided about something]
She was unsmiling, her face looked sulky. [but didn’t she just have a good news?]
She puffed air out through her lips and pouted. [telling sign of discomfort and unhappiness. But shouldn’t she be happy that SW liked her?]

Then when SW called out for her from outside, she looked shocked, but not in a happy way. Her eyes and mouth registered fear. Her eyes weren't soft-focused nor amused. The side of her lips were downturned, they didn't go up in a smile. Her expression could be described as “OMG. What’s HE doing here?!! Oh No!”  SW’s unexpected visit didn’t excite her or THRILL her. 

3) Her GEISHA make-up.  This is the GIVEAWAY. So many people have talked about this geisha make-up but they don't UNDERSTAND the significance.   

Look: DS has a conundrum that day in August. No matter how nice SW was, she only liked him as a friend. But since she was told that he liked her as a GIRLFRIEND, she had to be NICE to him.  She didn’t want him to be hurt because she already liked TK. So when SW dropped by to invite her for ramen at TK’s room, she PLANNED to TERMINATE his supposed crush on her with the Geisha make-up. 

Didn’t you get that? She wasn’t making herself pretty for SW. She was making herself UGLY so SW wouldn’t find her attractive anymore and would end his supposed "liking" for her. Shaking my head here….
 
DS knew how to put on makeup to make herself pretty. Watch Episode 1, at 54:51. She applied her own make-up for the camera interview. So she definitely knew what looks good on her and not. And geisha look was definitely ugly. 

tsk.tsk.tsk. Ulterior motives: Just because a girl puts on make-up DOESN'T mean that her objective is to "CATCH" a man, you know...

4) The Voice-Over. The TIMING of the voice-over wasn’t important here. The DELIVERY of the voice-over was.

If SW really was indeed her first love, she should have been giggling like a schoolgirl as she said. But that’s not the case here. Listen to the video. She was positively cackling. That should have alerted shippers that she was being IRONIC. The tone of laughter didn’t match the words she was saying and the simpering way she walked behind SW.  Her cackle, as she walked out the room, was meant to be MOCKING the words she was saying. She did NOT mean the words to be taken literally. It would be foolish to take the words at face-value. 

Thus, these four different reactions of DS on this fateful day in August demonstrate that her first love ≠ SW.  

C.  Last, the writer’s COSMIC joke also indicates that DS First Love ≠ SW.  

We all know that this scriptwriter is very meticulous. She does her research well, even on their names.  Just look at the Stevie Wonder gag in Episode 16. The teacher who auditioned and sang "I Just Called to Say That I Love You" was named Stevie Greg. Do you know what Greg means? lol. It means "watchful".  The real Stevie Wonder is blind, remember. But as an inside joke, the writer named the contestant Stevie I-Can-See-You. lol. 

She did the same thing with the names of DS and SW. She played around with them. I had an anonymous friend who helped me with the names because I don’t speak Korean. Thanks, you know who you are! This is her answer to my questions regarding DS’ and SW’s names.

성덕선's closest spelling is what was written on her passport ep 9: SEONG(성) DEOK(덕) SEON(선).
The ㅓin her name is spelled as EO.
But anyone can spell it either way: Duk Sun, Deok Sun, Duk Seon. 
Sung Sun Woo's closest spelling (성선우) is SEONG (성) SEON (선) WOO (우)
And, yes, both Seon Woo and Deok Seon have (선) in their name.

Do you, ladies, see the problem her? Do you see the joke that the Scriptwriter had planned from the very beginning? SW cannot be DS’ first love because he’s her TWIN. 

Her twin!  lol.

If the parents in Ssangmundong were upset with Bora and SW’s union, then, the entire country would be discombobulated with a DS and SW pairing. Do you see the incongruity? If they were to register their names in marriage, it would look like this:

Sung, DeokSeon  DOB: Sept 17, 1971. 
Sung, SeonWoo   DOB: Sept 17, 1971.

They shared the same birth year, the same birth month, the same birth date, the same last name AND the same given name. They even live in the same neighborhood, too. They were twins from different mothers. SW cannot be DS’ first love because as this ludicrous trope goes, he’s her TWIN. The scriptwriter set it up.They weren't meant to be....

No wonder SW’s behavior closely resembled DS’ behavior in many occasions, to name a few, the way they cossetted over TK,  took care of their younger siblings, obeyed their parents’ commands, were sensitive to familial concerns, were fussy over their loved ones. They were cosmic twins.    

So, no.

Altogether, the timeline + DS’ reactions + their names mean that DS' first love isn't SW.  DS’ First Love = TK.

This is during spring break. JH is going to the STUDY HALL and tells Miran he does NOT need his uniform.

 

also, the TV screen was NEVER shown in that scene ( please rewatch). Why out of all the times that the TV is shown, it is not in that scene?? Why? Why would the writer make you go google online when the date was? because that would have been the only way?

as soon as i connected Aug 15th=school I realized my biggest HOLE to fill is that it is a national HOLIDAY.

a point I waited for ANYONE to ask...I have cyber-proof. Pack was the first  ONLY one to catch it.

The writers "mistake" in having SW go to school on a holiday was actually what allowed me to figure out something is off and lead me down the rabbit hole of relooking at the scene.

If it wasnt for the time bubble I couldnt have come to my realizations. I BURST the bubble.

Furthermore, regarding jesse saying the Samsung commercial is like the 1997 add in. I wrote this in response:

then I would have to disagree with you because your example provides no perspective, no context. The date dec 29^th (unless I am mistaken) has no great importance.

You see in 1997 Easter Egg, the Olympics reference gave us the story of DS who LIVED the life of the picket girl, but even more Olympics was a symbol of opening Korea to the world, to the West, As shown by the Spam, the house of JH compared to the others, of JH’s hamburger steak with kimchi which JB calls the west meeting the east. There is a reason why the writer focused on how they all lived on a street across each other, because they would soon lose that opportunity with rapid modernization aka the last scene of the show. The curtain drop.

 and the Baduk board became the STORY board which you understand so well.

The two pieces shown are CENTRAL to the story of 1988.

So, below I will leave an little paragraph about 1974, which will hopefully show why I think my example provided the context, perspective that really clues us into the next reply.

I would just like to add that it was from BORA's scene where she puts a RAMEN pot on the field trip form that i could clarify which date the dance competition was on. Again it was showed at TK's house under the ramen pot....but i couldnt see the date. I would have thought it was anywhere form 14th-16th...never looking up EXACTLY the 15th and thus NEVER making the connection to the historical context. 

Why would BORA the PROTESTOR have a "random" scene of grabbing the form with her feet placing it under a ramen pot looking at it and not saying anything is what I thought to myself.
