Dear @violetts Have you seen this? If it is not too much trouble, is it possible to share a summarized translation?

So much laughters from all of them, I really love it and Kim Hee Sun was soooooo cute. Her eyes light up when they mention soju/alcohol. So funny. 10 years difference? I don't see it at all, LOL.

    Hi! Sure thing!
Thanks for posting these by the way, I had never seen them before.

Okay hum, bear with me, this is a very rough translation ^^’

    First video:

At 00:28, the actor who plays Gi Cheol starts by saying (this is a litteral translation): « Mr Lee Min Ho is currently taking care of his body to perfection » - basically implying that LMH is working out to fill his role as Daejang.

LMH bursts out laughing and he mumbles something like « thats not true »

Gi Cheol actor goes on and says « You work out so much that you don’t even need to wear an armor at this point. »

    LMH: « I lost 7kg within a month »

Gi Cheol (lol sorry I dont’ remember the actor’s name and I’m too lazy to look it up): « Tell us how you lost that weight »

LMH: « The first day of filming, there was this scene where I had to pick up Kim Hee Sun noona. She was really light! » (KHS hits him playfully)

(cont’d): « But after a month, when I tried to pick her up again, it kinda took more efforts. My muscles/strength are pretty much non existent right now, I only have bones. »

Gi Cheol: « So you’re saying you started working out because of Kim Hee Sun? »

KHS and LMH both laugh. I didnt quite catch what LMH said at that, but I think he said « You could say that. »

Gi Cheol: «  A little while ago, KHS went to a countryside convenient store in the middle of the night wearing her character’s clothes. The ajumma who was on shift that night was very surprised. Why is that? »

KHS: « Okay so basically, there is this scene right after I performed a surgery on No Gook princess where I wear clothes with blood on them. I went to the supermarket wearing that garment. The lady there couldn’t take any pictures so she took screenshots of the cctv footage and put them online. Since we could clearly see blood on my clothes, I appeared like a crazy lady. »

Gi Cheol: « Why did you go to the supermarket? »

KHS: « To bring back drinks to the filming crew~ » (angelic sounds)

Gi Cheol: « Alright. Let’s ask questions to Mr Ryu Deok Hwan now. You’ve been acting for 20 years now. If you hadn’t been an actor, what would you do? »

    RDH: « That’s a good question, I’ve never thought about it. »

LMH: « Just tell him you’ve wanted to be an actor since you were born. »

    RDH [says exactly that]

    Everyone laughs.

Gi Cheol (pretends to be pissed): « Just tell us what you would be doing if you weren’t an actor! »

    RDH: « As I said, since I’m a natural born actor... »

    Everyone laughs again.

Gi Cheol: « What is a habit you picked up as someone so passionate about their job? » (or something along those lines)

RDH: « The reason why I always take the bus and the subway is because I like to observe people. »

    Gi Cheol (nods): « That’s a good habit. »

    Everyone laughs again.

Gi Cheol: « In all seriousness. An actor shouldn’t be self centered. You gotta look out for others too. »

KHS leans in and says to LMH (speaking of Gi Cheol actor): « He not only asks the questions but he answers them too. »

LMH, laughing, adds: « I think we should just sit here and not say anything »

RDH (as interviewer) to KHS: « Kim Hee Sun sshi » (using formal language)

KHS: « But you’re more senior than me » (implying he’s had a longer acting career than her)

RDH: « Is that so? »

« One of my favorite drama is called Tomato (KHS played in it.) »

    (Pause.)

« Do you like tomatoes? »

KHS bursts out laughing: « Are you serious right now? »

    RDH: « Yes, I’m genuinely curious! »

KHS (humors him): « Yes, I do, I really like tomatoes. »

RDH: « And you really are like a tomato. Sweet, intense... »

LMH: « Yah, why are you being cheesy like this? »

KHS (to RDH): « You’re the best. »

RDH to Park Se Young: « You played in this drama called Sarangbi (the cost of love.) »

PSY: « Oh god what is he going to ask now »

RDH: « Have you ever been the cost of a love? »

    Everyone laughs.

PSY: « RDH is on fire today »

LMH: « I don’t think we should ever drink with RDH »

PSY: « You’re not drunk are you? »

RDH (very seriously): « Have you ever loved someone / been in love? »

PSY: « Hm. i really want to learn / discover (?) being in love. » (meaning: discover what it feels like being in love)

    RDH: « aah okay.. I understand. »

KHS (as interviewer) to LMH: « People say that LMH sshi can appear a bit rugged and cold at first sight. LMH sshi, if you had to describe yourself, what would you say your first impressions are? »

LMH (pauses): « Yes it seems like a lot of people are saying those things about me. As for me... I would say that I like to think myself as playful, really good at drinking and... good with women. » (he says « I like women » in korean but I think it can translate to him being good with ladies.)

KHS: « Aren’t all those things true though? »

LMH (super embarrassed): « Noo! Ah I’m sweating. No, in reality I’m quite awkward, not a good drinker and I don’t go out much so I mostly stay at home. As for women... »

RDH (interjects): « You don’t like women? »

LMH (immediately): « No of course I like them. »

KHS: « Do you meet them only in your house? » (hides herself) « No because you said you mostly stay at home so... »

LMH (laughs): « Anyway, I believe I give off the wrong impressions » (or something along those lines)

KHS: « Now I will ask RDH a question. I heard you like alcohol? What’s your level of tolerance? Do you have a drinking buddy? » (and goes on and on about drinking questions lol)

LMH: « She gets excited everytime we talk about drinking, look at her eyes sparkling »

    Everyone laughs.

KHS (asks again) « whats your level of tolerance? »

RDH: « I havent’ exactly measured it. »

I’ll translate the second video tonight!

(Currently in the office on my phone, I technically should be working right now ㅋㅋ)

BTW, I really enjoyed the fortune teller guy, I thought he was fantastic

Fortune teller guy was hilariously brilliant !! It’s easy to disregard this scene because he appears just that one time, but he nailed it !

On a side thought, I’m currently watching tkem for the first time (I’m on episode 4) and despite Lee Gon’s dorkyness, I gotta admit.... Daejang remains my favorite character of LMH’s roles to date. Lee Gon’s too precious and pretty. Choi Young’s rough ruthlessness is the good stuff. :tenor:

    Episode 1

This is one of my favorite episodes and I find myself returning to it often for three reasons. First, we see the very beginning of Young and Eun-soo’s relationship, and that neither of them is emotionally healthy. Young sleeps a lot, focuses only on the requirements of his duty, and is uninvolved with others. Eun-soo is obsessed by finding money to fund her stem cell research, which she believes will lead to a secure position in her field.

Wow @msdot your recap. Wow. You perfectly summed up how I felt during the episode.
You pin point exactly what’s wrong with both characters in the beginning: they’re both emotionally shut off, one barely living (Choi Young, just performing his duties like a robot), the other focusing on her career and not caring about anything else. As you said though, this is exactly what’s so intriguing about the both of them, because it’s the tipping point to a beautiful development.

Third, we see the huge difference in Choi Young’s versus Eun-soo’s view of violence. When Choi Young slashes the guard’s neck at the medical conference, to him it’s just part of a day’s work for the king. To everyone else, they’re (and we would be) horrified beyond words, and it’s the beginning of many shocks for the Doctor, who will face everyday violence she’s never seen or experienced before. So the series will have to answer this question: How will she resolve that trauma for herself, and can she love a man who regularly deals death to others and returns reeking of their blood?

This is also another super interesting take! Can Eun Soo, whose life revolves around saving lives, love someone whose duty is to kill people for a living?

THE CONTRADICTION! THE FRICTION! THE ANGST!
The premises of both characters is just.... gaaah perfect. It’s a textbook example of a writing trope where opposites attract.

Came in for LMH, stayed for the character development.

    Episode 2

Lastly I was struck in this re-watch by how long Eun-soo hesitates as she’s about to go through the portal, back to modern-day Korea. She sees that Choi Young is having a big disagreement with Il-shin about her going, and the argument is heated enough that people are drawing their swords. If she only wanted to return to her world, why didn’t she just leave? I’ve decided that she knew he was in a serious dispute and was already starting to care about him. Song Ji-na, the screenwriter of Faith, wrote in her novel that Choi Young went and got Eun-soo at the portal not only to follow orders but also responding to something in him that didn’t want to let her go. I think something was responding in her too, and that their attraction went both ways right from the start.

I’ve always wondered about that too. She was always so eager to leave from the get go, and yet when it came to actually go back, she hesitated. Almost as if something irrational pulled her back. (Thats called gut feeling Eun Soo. Your heart and body reacting unconsciously because deep down, you want to bang that hot Daejang warrior ㅋㅋ)

Also YES. Song Ji Na wrote that Choi Young was also irrationally mesmerized by Eun Soo. We don’t perceive it on screen, but when Choi Young grabs Eun Soo and drags her back, it’s not only him responding to an order but also a part of him that wants to keep her. I remember Song Ji Na wrote that he was completely taken with her flowery perfume and fiery hair~

  4. Since @Lmangla kicked off the rewatch… here goes my unfiltered reaction / recap post of the first episode.

    Capture-d-e-cran-2020-08-18-a-20-06-00.p

Episode 1, otherwise known as: "Girl, you have no idea what you're getting into."

I’ve put the rest of the post under a spoiler break as to not spam everyone.

    Spoiler

Our party comprising the royal couple + the 15 or so Woodalchi guards have been stuck on a roadside inn because somebody bribed someone else and hid boats, so our gang can't cross the sea and have to stay the night in.

Sneaky ninjas sneak into the inn during the night (very dark, very dangerous) and woodalchi guards transform into Jedis with glow-in-the-dark swords.

    Capture-d-e-cran-2020-08-18-a-20-16-20.p

    Lightsaber fight, yay

Choi Young takes his job very seriously in his mission to protect the young King.

    Capture-d-e-cran-2020-08-18-a-20-24-48.p

So basically, Choi Young is :

    Capture-d-e-cran-2020-08-18-a-20-24-24.p

The ninjas manage to break in the main room where the royal couple is hiding, so CY has no choice but to kill them all (rip ninjas.)

    Capture-d-e-cran-2020-08-18-a-20-30-09.p

He's beauty, he's grace, he will slash your face~

Even though they're in the middle of getting trapped by bad guys, CY and the King delve into a very passionate dialogue.Capture-d-e-cran-2020-08-18-a-20-46-09.p

    Oh mama the drama.

But alas, during the fight our beloved Queen gets badly injured. Fortunately for the gang, a star gate just happens to be nearby~ and our fearless leader Choi Young, captain of the Woodalchi guards gets sent through this portal to supposedly bring back a doctor from the otherworld~ in a desperate attempt to save the Queen's life.

Unbeknown to him, he travels through time to 2010s Seoul and finds himself in a medical convention, and barges into one of the event's lectures.

    FIRST MEETING eeeeeeeek

    Capture-d-e-cran-2020-08-18-a-20-58-26.p

It's really interesting to see LMH's portrayal of the character during this scene and how he interpreted CY meeting this "otherworldly" woman. From what I remember in the companion novel, I think the writer described this encounter as him being mesmerized by this stunning fiery haired woman.

Clearly the feeling isn't mutual. This ain't love at first sight for Eun Soo ㅋㅋ

    Capture-d-e-cran-2020-08-18-a-21-03-00.p

Anyway, after a couple of shenanigans where Eun Soo proves that she is indeed skillful and can save lives, CY promptly grabs her to go back to his world. Eun Soo does not agree.

And this is where this show truly reveals its brilliant writing and its comedic undertones, because she calls this FLOWERBOY ahjussi :joy:

    Capture-d-e-cran-2020-08-18-a-21-11-14.p

Careful son, this is your future wife you're carrying like a sack of potatoes.

    Capture-d-e-cran-2020-08-18-a-21-15-22.p

The episode ends with two flashbacks:

    - One of Eun Soo consulting a fortune teller that announces that she will soon meet an otherworldly super handsome man from the past (I see what you did there).

    - A flashback of our Choi Young when he gets appointed Captain of the royal guards and meets the other Woodalchis. I had never noticed it before, but in this scene, Choi Young looks younger, more carefree and free of any burden. A sharp contrast to the current version we have of him, where he breathes sense of duty and seriousness.

Anyway that's it for me today. If you guys have any trivia from filming or behind the scenes tidbits, please do share! I'll try to do episode 2 tomorrow ^^

Nope, same username. It's a miracle I remember my login & password, I think the last time I logged in was around 2018. And before that, 2014 ^^"

I remember your prof. V antics and the popsicle man jokes. Good times, good times. It feels it was ages ago. How have you been? :D :D

Based on the current poll, when we see all the things we cannot live without, it's a wonder how Eun Soo managed going from 2010s Gangnam to 1300~ era Goryeo. But I guess we'd also forget modern comfort quickly if we got kidnapped by a medieval looking warrior Psycho.

And coffee. Can't go without my caffeine.

Also wouldn't mind traveling back in time to meet one of those Daejangs, especially one that looks like LMH (don't tell my bf that, he doesnt need to know shhhhh).

First shooting - May 24, 2012 (according to the news info from Page 1). They shot it in summer. LMH was dying from the heat even if he didn't get stabbed by imja.

Knowing how hot and sticky summers in Korea are, I can't imagine how uncomfortable they must have been, filming in warm weather with all those layers on. It's like robes upon robes upon robes. Aygooo.

and I remember thinking it was a strange pairing choice because the actress, kim hee sun, and him had quite an age gap. how did you chingus feel on that before watching? @Min2206 @H0ney @CallieP @Thong Thin @mademoisellesia @msdot @Ameera Ali @UnniSarah @violetts  -- I remember that initially found it a bit strange visually but once I got into the story, it made sense -- she was a specialty doctor and in our time, that is about an average 13-15 years of study.. and his character was someone fighting wars from a young age and so there is a different kind of maturity -- almost older than you are.. so once I started fighting, it didn't seem as jarring...

Honestly didn't mind the age gap one bit. It didn't seem weird 8 years ago, still doesn't seem weird today.

I guess it's because the characters are so well written, it really feels all natural and the chemistry between the two is nuclear level hot, so it just... fits ? I think LMH and KHS both got a perfect sense of how their characters clicked, and they made it work so well on screen, the age gap is not perceptible at all.

I read that the first style he wore in Faith was a hairpiece that was glued hair by hair onto his hair so it wouldn’t come off during action scenes. It supposedly took 5 hours to remove it! I have no idea about the second style; it could be all his own, perhaps with some extensions, as his hair grew long during filming. I think the third style is all his own hair, but only LMH and his hair stylist know for sure! He looked fabulous in all three styles; love him in longer hair!

Ooh interesting trivia, thanks for sharing ! His hairstyle doesn't look like a full on wig, so I always thought he had hair extensions of some sort.

Anyway 5 hours to remove it, phew! That's some serious commitment.

  10. Hello everyone~

I randomly started a rewatch of the show a few days ago, I didn't realize it was right in time for the 8th anniversary, what a coincidence! I'm currently on episode 7!

It was this show that made me sign up on this forum 8 years ago, I have very happy memories discussing the episodes with other soompi members. I'm pretty sure we can still find pages and pages of my fangirling on this thread, if we go back a couple of thousands pages :D

Anyway I'm happy to find this topic still alive and thriving~

    Happy rewatch everyone

  11. Hi there, I'm a long time lurker of this thread and I figured it was time for me to come out of my shell! :)
I'm relatively new to the show as I was originally a fan of "Dad where are you going?". At first, I thought the concept of Superman had too much of a reality show feeling rather than "variety". Filming the kids in their houses, doing daily routine activities seemed for me to be an invasion of privacy even if the dads and kids obviously chose to be on the show. So I was quite reluctant to start watching it.
But seeing that Superman was such a hit and seeing that it was getting more and more popular (while "Dad where are you going" slowly faded -a debate I'm not going to get into since it's off topic), I got curious and started watching the show.
And boy I'm glad I started! The kids are so precious and adorable, watching them grow day by day is just amazing.
I can understand how the show has such a passionate fan base; how can you not get attached to these kids and their dads when you see them evolve and grow? I can't help but feel proud at seeing each achievement and each milestones reached by the kids, and I bet all the fans feel that way too.
This show just grabs you by the heart with all the adorableness and is overall a great lesson of life.

said: For the Koreans out there, could you explain to me why do the actors try so much to hide who they are dating? Dating is a fact of life, LMH was dating the leading actress of "City Hunter" and they came public with that. But after that you hear nothing about him. I kind of understand PSH, because she has the pure image of the naive girl next door, but she is 23 and she does not or will not date? Why would LMH and PSH not want rumors about them dating? That would be just natural since they had to act with each other for 4 months. Why would this hurt their careers? But of course, they are probably just friends from making this drama together. But I am just curious, because it seems like it is a big deal to hide their personal lives from the public in S. Korea.

  13. I've always been fascinated with how Koreans mean their words. In my country, when someone calls you "stupid" it's like an insult no matter how cutely one says it. But in S.Korea (or at least in dramas I've watched), babo-ya can be used as a cute dialogue or even an endearment. Remember how KT always call CES "dummy" (meong cheong i ya)  and in ep. 19, CES called KT "babo-ya" during the reunion scene at the school park. And it doesn't seem like they're insulted at all.

  14. Yes it is. She said "babo" which means "stupid". In this context, it can also be translated as dork. I don't think it's crude, she clearly meant it as a joke (you can tell from her face and attitude), and at this point, I don't even think LMH interpreted it as rude; it's the kind of things that can be thrown between two close friends, in my opinion. No big deal?
Edit: Besides, he was the one to start teasing her, so obviously he tried to elicit some kind of reaction from her, and he got it :)

  15. Here's my translation to the rest of the interview; I started at the 4 minute mark since I already translated the first part in a previous post :)
    http://vimeo.com/81623252#at=2
KWB: Even when I look at those scenes myself, I see how mean Young Do is. He's mean. He looks mean. My mom sent me a text that said: "Woo Bin, stop harassing other kids." The truth is, even back then, it wasn't that Young Do didn't have a conscience. He wasn't 100% harassing Eun Sang. He was just doing it to spite Tan.
The interviewer voice over points out that everytime Young Do is being a jerk and harasses someone, he rubs his eyebrow.
KWB: Truth be told, at the beginning, it was something I did on purpose. Sometimes it looks obvious, sometimes it looks more natural. Now that I think of it, I think everytime I rubbed my eyebrow, I also sighed.
Interviewer voice over says something about the fact that YD didn't really know how to behave around ES, even though he liked her with all his being and yet he stole the audience's heart.
Interviewer: KWB has a lot of powerful lines he says to ES. Which one is your favorite?
PSH, replying without hesitation: "Don't look at me like that. You make me tremble/nervous."
KWB: I think... YD really liked ES a lot. When I read all these lines again (and then he repeats a bunch of them while the actual scenes appear on the screen).
KWB (cont'd), referring to the last scene (6:45): I think he was quite different from the Young Do we normally see. He conveyed his feelings with more sincerity and seriousness. But he got rejected. He got rejected hard. [laughing]
Interviewer: I feel really bad about our young do though... my heart aches for him
PSH: I wish he met a girl he could see and talk to without having to trip her feet <3
KWB *realizing how pitifully others see his character*: It's sad, really. I didn't see things like that. Cha Eun Sang, farewell / good riddance !

Actress who plays ES' mom from previous interview: Everytime you see YD eating, he's always eating a cup of ramen so I really wanted to give him actual food (= cooked rice)
KWB: So she finally made  meal for me, and it was really something sweet and warm and somethng that YD was waiting and looking forward to, I think.

Moving on to LMH big heart wrenching crying scene:
LMH: It's actually the first time I had to cry that much. To be honest, I don't usually tear up that much. But while I was crying in that scene, I really felt like I had a big hole inside of me.
PSH: When I asked Oppa: "Hey how did the shooting go yesterday?", he just replied: (she imitates his voice) "Nah, I just shed a few tears, that's it."What a liar! [laughs]
Interviewer: Is the ending out already?
    LMH: Yes.
Interviewer: It's a happy ending right?
PSH: Well... it could be good or bad.
    [laughs]
And then all the actors sign off saying things like: we will work hard until the very end, please don't forget to watch the show, thank you for supporting us etc.
And the very last sentence is Kim Woo Bin saying to the camera: "Don't look at me like that. It makes me nervous/tremble."

  16. Not sure if there's been a translation to this video so far...

Anyway, here's mine (loose translation) :
Interviewer: "Okay, one two three" [PSH claps hands]
LMH: "You're doing it so well" (Kinda feels like he's teasing?)[CAPTION: Lee Min Ho looks happy just by seeing (PSH) clapping hands]
Interviewer: "Your schedule's really crazy these days, no?"
    LMH: "Yes it is."
Interviewer: "How many hours did you guys sleep?"
LMH&PSH answering at the same time: "One hour"
Interviewer, laughing at their same answer: "I'm sorry did you guys sleep together...?"
    [Everyone laughs]
PSH explains: "We both finished filming at the same time and we both started filming at the same time today so..."
LMH: "I think I'll feel sad once it's over"
Interviewer: "You're not feeling sad now?"
LMH: "Not yet" and then he says: "Park Hyung Shik (sp?) who plays the role of Myung Soo just finished filming today..."
PSH: "Since he finished filming today, I'm starting to feel a little bit sad" (or something like that, not 100% sure on this sentence)
Interviewer: "What is your favorite scene you filmed as Eun Sang and Kim Tan?"
    PSH smiles
PSH: "Does it necessarily have to be only one?"
LMH: "You want to talk about the kiss scene don't you?" [nudges her]
PSH: "No no no, not that one! I wasn't thinking about the kiss scene but rather the "almost" kiss (litteral translation is "empty/air kiss"). The moment leading up to it was very tense and close."
LMH: "Me too, I prefer that scene. The "will he, won't he" move."
Interview voice over: "The two characters didn't actually kiss but they chose this scene as their favorite one!"
PSH & LMH: "A lot of people called this sequence "the empty kiss"
LMH: "Yeah, it was supposed to be a "I'm holding off/restraining myself" action. But it turns out that I was moving my lips after all! I wasn't thinking about it, it wasn't intentional. So it turned out to be a "empty kiss"."
    [The real kiss scene appears]
LMH: "Weirdly enough ... (and I can't hear anything because there's the wooing sound in the background). But now I know the right angle to kiss properly without my nose getting in the way"
    PSH laughs
LMH: "The place where we filmed this scene wasn't actually a film set. The aim was to create a very close, electrical marvelous feeling. And since it's a confined space, it really did feel a rather pleasant/lovely/comfortable."
And then the interviewer says something about all these questions from Kim Tan that made the romance of this couple more affectionate. The 'Do I like you?Did I miss you? etc
    [squealing]
LMH: "When I first saw all these questions, I was like *aak* "
Interviewer: "Why did you feel that way?"
LMH: "I don't know, it felt a bit... um."
Guy voice: "Yeah, guys tend to feel like that." (I guess he meant that guys feel a little bit iffy/rebuffed at these kind of cute dialogues)
PSH repeats the dialogue and tries to explain to help out LMH
LMH: "But the fact that he formally made these confessions is neat/admirable. The fact that Tan is so transparent, open with his feelings is really something admirable."
[The scene where Kim Tan asks YD if him and ES make a good/beautiful couple show up]
and cut to KWB reacting to these questions: "I felt suffocated/awkward." [laughing]
KWB: "With Eun Sang we often asked Tan after a kiss scene 'Did you like it?' as a joke " (I'm guessing he's referring to the actors in their role...?)
and then he says: "Of course I feel bad. But Young Do has never really seen them kissing so... But I guess this question was nagging him. Did they kiss or not?"
The interviewer voice over says: "He looks so lonely on top of that since he's doing the interview alone..."

  17. Well, for one thing, events that happens in your life shapes who you are as a person. @Laquetahodge you're right he might not even have been promoted to General if that was the case. But in the book, SJN really insists on CY 'destiny', on the fact that he is and had always been meant for the greater thing. (She mentions it several times in the book through flashbacks moments of his father and his Master/Teacher)

;I agree with @Anomalous on this one: had MH never died, I believe CY would have gone through the honorable route and would have stayed faithful to MH, even if his heart betrayed him. It would have been up to MH to let him go, otherwise I think it would have destroyed him. CY is so loyal and honorable that he takes it to the extreme, to pursue what's morally right regardless of what his true feelings are. We saw this in the show when he beats himself up for being 'greedy' and wanting ES for himself and not sending her back (you know that whole sequence where he backs ES against a wall and says he regrets asking her to stay; I can't pinpoint the exact episode... But its towards the end.)
