Makjang Dramas that You Should Add to Your Watchlist

Makjang is a non-standard version of the word kkeutjang, which signifies end or conclusion, and is not an officially recognized phrase. A kkeutjang denotes a situation of having reached a point where further progress or completion is no longer possible. Makjang is a word used in popular culture to describe excessive art.

Makjang, in the context of dramas, is a form of drama that is difficult to comprehend or accept based on common sense or ordinary moral standards. Despite how ludicrous the tale is, it decides to play up wild storylines to pull viewers in. Forced situations, complex relationships, adultery, and birth secrets are all included in these dramas. There are many K-dramas whose plot relies heavily on emotive and over-the-top narrative, but this is explained by writers in the industry as a way for viewers of relieving stress either to empathize or just entertain themselves through the stories of the characters.

Although dramas with such themes aren't everyone's cup of tea, here are some of the makjang dramas you should give a try if you are interested!

Lee Min Ho has his head in the clouds in NEW update; Will the actor shoot for Pachinko 2 soon?

The actor seems to be having a lovely shoot day.

The K-drama icon had a sunny shoot day and Minoz, his fandom, was treated to his handsome face with a sweet update. Lee Min Ho is not a frequent visitor of the platform so the tiniest of hints of his presence earn the biggest reactions from fans. His Instagram feed is filled with promotional content, an occasional selfie, a cheeky life update and his many shoot locations.

The latest one seems to be yet another sky-high view for the ‘Boys Over Flowers’ fame artist as he can be seen shelling his charm at a rooftop venue. With a beautiful sky full of fluffy white sightings of the clouds and a sun that is shining through their midst, a net barricade stood between Lee Min Ho and the world beneath. The following image brought a camera set-up to view as he stared outside at the many tiny establishments in front of his eyes.

Min Ho’s last role saw him taking up the character of Hansu which impressed the viewers in more ways than one. It was one of his best so far as Lee Min Ho’s depiction of various emotions and a subtle inclination towards being a villain figure in a story saw much praise. The actor himself spoke about his decision to take up the challenging role.

‘Pachinko’ was announced for a renewal by Apple TV+ in April. With the ending for season 1, fans are curious as to how Hansu will make a return to the story and are wondering if the actor will be filming for it anytime soon. Meanwhile, he is also set to appear in ‘Ask the Stars’ opposite Gong Hyo Jin next.

So they released the Pachinko episode 1 script and I jumped right into the last scenes...

:bashful::bashful:

***************************

It Starts On The Page: Read The Script For ‘Pachinko’s Series-Premiere Episode

Only a year after Min Jin Lee’s original novel was published in 2017 and became a New York Times bestseller, Apple acquired rights to Pachinko to turn it into series. The bet paid off, as the eight-episode drama, with Soo Hugh as writer, showrunner and executive producer, became a worldwide hit, scoring big enough numbers that Apple announced a Season 2 renewal on the day the Season 1 finale premiered on the streamer.

Pachinko‘s pilot episode is the latest installment of It Starts On the Page, Deadline’s annual series that highlights the scripts that serve as the creative backbones of the buzzy shows that will define the now-underway TV awards season. The scripts in our series are all being submitted for Emmy Awards consideration this year and have been selected by Deadline using criteria that includes critical acclaim, selecting from a wide range of networks and platforms, and a mix of established and lesser-known shows.

Soo Hugh wrote and created this series based on the the novel, which chronicles the hopes and dreams of a Korean immigrant family over four generations as they leave their homeland to build a better life.

The pilot episode, “Chapter One,” written by Hugh and directed by Kogonada, begins with Solomon (Jin Ha) in 1989 New York City as he attempts to secure a promotion. The story then flashes back to the childhood of his mother in Japanese-occupied Korea, as a young Sunja (Yuna) living with her parents who house male lodgers.

ELEOS

Episode 101

“Chapter One”

Written by Soo Hugh

Based on the novel by Min Jin Lee

...

BUPYEONG MARKET, BUSAN, KOREA – DAY (1931)

Tired of all this now, Hansu drops his cigarette and scans
the CROWD...

His eyes happen to fall upon a TEENAGE GIRL walking
purposefully from vendor to vendor, a no-nonsense energy to
her steps. And it’s our Sunja, now sixteen-years-old. No
longer a child but a woman on the cusp. We watch her from
Hansu’s point-of-view, trying to read her story in her body
language. In her eyes, we notice that spark of childhood
innocence has dimmed considerably. But it has not been
extinguished entirely.

Hansu starts to lose interest in her, his eyes flicking away
when (2) JAPANESE POLICE OFFICERS cross Sunja’s path.
Different faces from the Officers in the past, but the same
carriage, the same discipline. And while everyone around
Sunja stops to lower his/her head in deference, Sunja alone
stands with her head raised high. In her eyes, a defiance
holds steady. She will not yield. Hansu, catching this--

HANSU (CONT'D)
(switching to Korean)
That girl--who is she?

MARKET OFFICIAL
(in Korean)
Which girl?

HANSU
That one--

He nods his head towards Sunja, who is on her way again. The Japanese Officers have safely gone past. When the Market Official sees who Hansu is referring to--

MARKET OFFICIAL (O.S.)

She’s--she’s no one.

But Hansu finds himself unable to look away now, following Sunja as she stops at the EEL VENDOR. It’s not the same person from her youth.

EEL VENDOR 2 (faintly)

Sunja, look--I saved the biggest one for you!

Sunja responds back, but Hansu can’t hear her words. As Sunja continues on to the CABBAGE VENDOR, the Market Official shrugs:

MARKET OFFICIAL I believe her mother runs a boarding house in Yeongdo. A widow.

Hansu’s eyes continue to follow Sunja as she walks past the CANDY VENDOR, surrounded by a gaggle of CHILDREN. And then suddenly, she feels it...

Looking up, she stares directly at “us”--at Hansu--and their eyes grip for a charged, piercing moment. Unnerved by how openly he stares at her, with no shame, Sunja severs their connection and rushes towards the exit. She can no longer bear to be in the same space with him. She can’t breathe.

Hansu strains to keep her in his sight. He even shuffles to the edge of the dais, but she is soon lost to him altogether.

And as the Market Official bends down to wipe the cigarette ashes from Hansu’s shoe clean with a cloth, Hansu keeps his thoughts to her. He can’t explain why, not yet at least, but this “no one” girl intrigues him.

He wants her.

K-POP MUSIC blasts over the scrolling names of all those who worked tirelessly to make this show happen.

END OF PILOT EPISODE

WHAT IS LEE MIN HO LIKE IN REAL LIFE? THIS IS HOW IT IS TO WORK WITH HIM

Lee Min Ho's characters often win the hearts of fans, but what is this actor like when you get to know him up close? Here you can discover side that you do not know about his personality.

The great career of this Korean actor and his successful dramas have made him a great star of international popularity, however the reasons why his fans support him constantly and lovingly go beyond his acting skills.

Actor Lee Min Ho is known for having a very nice personality and thus has created beautiful friendships on and off the set, but he even gets along great with the staff that works by his side.

Today we tell you what Lee Min Ho is like from the perspective of the staff that always accompanies him, so you will discover what it is like to work with him and see his personality on normal day.

LEE MIN HO'S PERSONALITY WITH HIS STAFF IS SWEETER THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE

We previously told you that this K-Drama star released a collection of clips called 8 Letters, which were dedicated to fans where we learned more about Lee Min Ho.

The first clip showed a bit of the great connection he has with his staff, usually Lee Min Ho is very playful, but even if he is tired, when he arrives at a place he greets everyone politely or even with a dose of cuteness. When he is in photo shoots he is very funny, sometimes hiding and joking around but also throwing out comments that make everyone laugh.

In one of the shots we heard him say that he greatly appreciates the staff that accompanies him, but simultaneously we saw him playing a prank on one of the staff girls. The staff also know how to have fun and so they make suggestions to him on what to do to pamper the fans, even if it means pushing him into aegyo. LOL!

ARE LEE MIN HO'S STAFF ALSO HIS FANS?

In the editing of the clip, comments were added that point out how Lee Min Ho lights up the set whenever he appears and that is why it is easy to end up being his fan before you know it, which makes us think that the great support he receives from his staff is not only professional, but that of a fan who has seen his career evolve while he maintains his way of being so authentic.

Kpopmap Fan Interview: Two Indian MINOZs Talk About Their Favorite Actor Lee MinHo & The Reasons Why They Love Him

spacer.png

Are you also curious about fellow K-Drama fans?! Let's hear their stories and interests in Kpopmap Fan Interview Project.

There are K-Drama fans across the globe who share the same passion. But on online platforms, it is hard to know about each other' stories and tastes. Even if we are in the same fandom, it is hard to get to know each other.

So at Kpopmap, we started the Kpopmap Fan Interview Project to get to know more about K-Drama fans from different countries. Just like the Kpopmap Fan Interview for idols, the Kpopmap Fan Interview for actors aims to open the opportunity for fans to promote, talk about, and share their love for their favorite actor/actress with our readers.

Two fans from India are the next ones to answer our questions about their favorite actor- Lee MinHo! Check out how they became his fan, the reasons why they are a fan, the dramas they recommend, and much more insights about Lee MinHo.

Can you introduce yourself? Where are you from?

We are two fangirls from India, Yashika and Ankita. We run a fanclub named "Minholics India", which is dedicated to our idol South Korean superstar Lee MinHo.

Who is your favorite Korean actor/actress? And how and when did you become a fan?

Our favorite Korean actor is Lee MinHo. We became his fan in the year 2015 after watching "Boys Over Flowers" and "The Heirs". We met because of Lee MinHo on Twitter and because we both found each other through him, we're really thankful to him :).

What are the reasons why you love your favorite actor?

We love his acting and the way he is very dedicated towards his work. Also, he's very handsome & makes our hearts flutter! We love him. He is a beautiful person inside out. He is a selfless human being who gives more than he gets. He is a great son, brother, friend, actor, and of course, the best idol. He has proven himself and his talent with his hard work and dedication. He is THE Lee MinHo today only because of his hard work. He is a true inspiration to us and to the millions others.

Can you recommend dramas or movies starring your favorite actor for new fans?

Personally, we would recommend "Boys Over Flower", "The Legend of the Blue Sea", & "The Heirs" to new fans. But we want them to explore & find out which drama of LMH (Lee MinHo) actually suit their tastes.

KBS / SBS

Do you have an all-time favorite scene? Can you describe it or share a video?

Currently we're in love with all the scenes he is playing as Koh HanSu in "Pachinko". His standalone episode as young HanSu left us all in tears and speechless. We can't describe in words about Lee MinHo acting. We just felt proud how he delivered every scene with absolute perfection. The expression, the emotions, everything was top notch.

Which character played by your favourite actor do you think deserved better?

We think it's Choi Young from the drama "Faith", because he struggled all his life, went through the worst phases. So yes, he deserved much much better.

MYM Entertainment

Which co-actor do you think had the best chemistry with your favourite actor?

We think it's Jun JiHyun.

What's your favourite 2022 moment involving your favourite actor?

It was when his latest hollywood debut series "Pachinko" on Apple TV+ received all positive comments from many critics and even received 98% ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. These were the best and our most favorite moments for us.

Apple TV+

Describe him in 5 words.

Handsome
Hardworking
Determined
Versatile
Donation fairy

What about your favourite actor do you relate to the most?

He loves to eat & sleep... So yeah :D

What is your favorite actor's influence on your daily life or yourself?

He makes us want to be a better person for ourselves & the people around us! He made us fall in love with little things in our lives. We're really grateful of him! He has a really positive impact on our lives. He donates money for many social causes. This inspired us to collect & donate 75K INR (Indian Rupee) during the second wave of COVID-19 in India.

For Kpopmap readers who are not familiar with Korean dramas/movies yet, please tell us what makes Korean actors and Korean dramas/movies attractive to you.

The stories of K-Dramas & Movies are really intriguing! And the visuals are just amazing, the actors & actresses are very beautiful. Also, their acting skills are really impressive! If you're looking for some interesting dramas to binge on, then we would definitely recommend you to watch K-Dramas.

What genre do you want your favorite actor to appear in? What's the reason?

We would love to see him in action thriller, because we like action movies and he can show many emotions through that genre. His previous movie, "Gangnam Blues" left big impression on us. So we want to see him play something with a similar genre, but with different character and story.

Gangnam Blues Official

Which actors would you like your favorite actor to act with?

We would like to see him work with actors Lee JungJae, Tom Cruise, Akshay Kumar, and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Do you feel there are any misunderstandings, things that are not well known, or any prejudices about your favorite actor?

Now that the Korean entertainment industry is on the global level, we still think that the actors and actresses (basically every Korean artist) are facing prejudices towards them. Most of the people still don't want to watch K-Dramas and Movies because the language is not the English. They are missing so much good content just because it's in Korean language & they say that they don't understand it! I hope they can end that prejudice or they'll lose something good to see. Because not only do we get good K-dramas but we also learn about a new culture and language through the shows.

Have you ever made a new friend because of K-Dramas?

We're really thankful to K-Dramas and especially to Lee MinHo that "we" both found each other and there are few more good, reliable and trustworthy friends we call our group K-Divas. We met many people on Twitter from different countries and with time we have become good friends we love to chat with them even though we're from different countries. Lee MinHo is the string that brought us together.

Indian MINOZ's message to Lee MinHo:

We want to congratulate him for the huge success of "Pachinko". The praises and love he is receiving from people around the world is so overwhelming. We're so proud we stan a very talented actor who inspires us to be a better person and help the people in need.

A beautiful person is someone who stays true to themselves and their spirit; someone who is self-confident and can make you smile. You are the finest, loveliest, tenderest, and most beautiful person we have ever known— and even that is an understatement.

Thank you for answering our questions, MINOZ.

Lee Min Ho and Jung Il Woo – an iconic brotherhood who overcome adversities together.

June 13, 2022

The friendship between famous actors Lee Min Ho and Jung Il Woo is one for the history books.
Dashing as they are, Korean actors never fail to steal the audience’s heart. It is even more serious when these experienced heart-stealers are close with each other, bringing forth visual shocks for everyone in sight of them.

And among the most iconic friendships of Korean actors is one between Lee Min Ho and Jung Il Woo, who are both visual gods with impressive careers of their own.

Brothers who overcome adversities together
Born in 1987 in Seoul, Korea, Lee Min Ho grew up dreaming of becoming a soccer player. However, he had to give up on his dream due to a serious injury.

The actor then entered the Film and Arts Department of Konkuk University – a prestigious institution that trained numerous famous Korean artists.

Meanwhile, Jung Il Woo was born 3 months after his best friend, to an elite family. The actor’s grandfather is the chief director of a big hospital in Korea and personal doctor for the president, his mother is the chief of Textiles Research Lab at the prestigious Korea University, while his father is a former new anchorman, and now the director of a Kendo Academy.

Initially, Jung Il Woo wanted to follow his father’s steps, and so attended the Broadcasting Department at the Seoul Institute of the Arts. He then found his true calling in acting, and so transferred to the Theater and Film Department of Hanyang University.

Lee Min Ho and Jung Il Woo ended up meeting in high school, where they became quick friends. At school, they even called themselves “F4” jokingly for their families and visuals, and decided to enter the entertainment industry together.

However, it was not until a tragic accident happened, that the duo’s friendship was taken to the next level.

In particular, a car carrying Lee Min Ho and Jung Il Woo got into a serious crash back in 2006, immediately killing the driver and the passenger in the front seat. Lee Min Ho, who was in the back seat, ended up hospitalized for months due to broken ribs, thighs, and a torn knee. The actor also had a 46-cm (18 inches) installed into his thigh, and was in a coma for a month and put on bed rest for months later.

“We knew each other since we were kids, but our friendship only get to this life-and-death status after a life-altering accident”, Jung Il Woo once shared of his relationship with Lee Min Ho after.

Having basically been through a fatal situation together, Lee Min Ho and Jung Il Woo basically became as close as brothers. They would leave funny comments on each other’s SNS, like “So handsome! Keep fighting until the end!”, or “Cook for me too!”. Lee Min Ho would also promote his friend’s new work subtly, mentioning that Jung Il Woo would play a chef while talking about food.
