The Kidnapping Day: Episode 7

by solstices

Our sharp-witted heroine has begun recruiting useful allies into her circle, capitalizing on her persuasion and people skills to draw them in. Joining hands with others may bring her one step closer to escaping captivity, but there’s still the matter of her missing memories — and one very persistent investor.

EPISODE 7

When Myung-joon flubs a line in his panic, Ro-hee takes over the call with lawyer Taek-kyun. Assertive as always, she isn’t above retaliating with a bit of sass — “I’m doing all right for a dead person,” ha — and she stands firm on her demands. Grand-uncle Choi has to cough up 30 billion won, even if that means liquidating all of Professor Choi’s assets. Oh, and one last thing: Taek-kyun has to say that the kidnapper he spoke to was a woman.

Needless to say, Taek-kyun’s words are met with impotent rage (courtesy of Grand-uncle Choi) and wary suspicion (courtesy of Jaden). They can’t risk having the kidnapper make good on the threat to upload proof that Ro-hee is alive and well, since they — and the project — would be done for once it spreads like wildfire on social media.

Elsewhere, Hye-eun finally shows up at the police station for questioning. Pulling off her scarf to reveal the scar on her neck, Hye-eun confesses the truth to Sang-yoon — she had been infected with AIDS due to Cheol-won’s attack. When all attempts at treatment failed, Chairman Choi eventually dissolved her adoption, replacing her with Professor Choi. Hye-eun is sure she wasn’t the only abandoned child — given Chairman Choi’s obsession with his research, he’d likely made many more under-the-table adoptions.

Decades later, Hye-eun ran into Cheol-won again at Chairman Choi’s funeral, which is how they reconnected. However, Hye-eun claims ignorance regarding Cheol-won’s vengeance, as well as Myung-joon’s kidnapping. Feigning shock, Hye-eun even sheds a few crocodile tears, playing up the distraught victim act.

Upon returning to the villa, Jaden takes his frustration out on Myung-joon, threatening him with a gun to his head. Ho-young finds the landline in the basement room, and the jig is up. Did Myung-joon call Taek-kyun? Or did he contact Hye-eun? Jaden demands answers, and he wants them now.

Myung-joon insists that he acted alone, but that only stokes the flames of Jaden’s fury. Jaden cocks the gun, looking like he’s seconds away from shooting Myung-joon, and Ro-hee can’t help but cut in. Against Myung-joon’s protests, Ro-hee reveals how Hye-eun instigated the kidnapping to pay for Hee-ae’s surgery.

Myung-joon may have gotten a bruised head out of that confrontation, but Ro-hee’s managed to glean some useful information that Jaden let slip. Our duo is now aware of the connection between Hye-eun and Cheol-won, which Ro-hee finds odd.

When the kidnapper makes her next call, Taek-kyun picks up in front of Jaden and Grand-uncle Choi. Ho-young traces the call to a server in Russia, and Jaden’s lackeys corner Hye-eun as she exits a public toilet. The caller goes silent for a few long moments. Then just as Jaden thinks he’s caught the culprit red-handed, the caller continues speaking. It’s not Hye-eun after all. So who is she?

Over in Eun-seon’s office, the camera pans over to her screen — and it’s her on the line, with an IP address-disguising program open. Ro-hee had leveraged on Eun-seon’s personal stakes in the project to recruit her into their plan, knowing that Eun-seon can’t afford to lose her to Jaden’s clutches.

The Kidnapping Day: Episodes 8-9

by solstices

The chase is on, and our trusty investigator is on the case. At long last, our sly schemer has finally shown her true colors, all while evading suspicion with her deceitful wiles. She may have a number of skeletons in her closet, but it turns out our hero is harboring a secret, too — one that he may not even remember himself.

EPISODES 8-9

Our heroes are intercepted mid-escape, and while Jaden lets Eun-seon off the hook since he still needs her research capabilities, he’s not so inclined to forgive Taek-kyun’s treachery. Except someone else fires their gun first — it’s Myung-joon, who misses “Jackson” entirely, since his good aim is limited only to computer games, LOL. Myung-joon may not be able to get English names right, but he’s most certainly not letting “Jason” gain the upper hand. Ro-hee has come prepared with an extra gun (which she gets to hold for a very excited five seconds), turning the tide in favor of our heroes.

Holding “JJ” at gunpoint, Myung-joon vows that Ro-hee will live just like any other 11-year-old from here on out. She’s a child, not a research subject. The men tie Jaden up and stuff him into the trunk, since they need to keep him captive for now. Myung-joon plans to turn both himself and Jaden in after Hee-ae’s surgery the next day, wanting to put an end to everything and allow Ro-hee to walk free.

Meanwhile, Sang-yoon and his team round up Jaden’s thugs, but Ho-young remains frustratingly silent. The very next morning, the arrest warrant gets rejected, and the thugs walk free. It’s awful timing, because Ho-young immediately sets off in pursuit of our ragtag team, rescuing Jaden from the car trunk only to shove a gun into his mouth. Luckily for Jaden, it’s a blank — but a phone call from their English-speaking “boss” delivers a warning that a bullet will be going down Jaden’s throat next time, if he doesn’t deliver both Professor Choi’s research reports and Ro-hee.

While Myung-joon wanders off to buy a teddy bear for Hee-ae, Ho-young stabs Taek-kyun in the hospital parking lot. Myung-joon returns in time to call an ambulance for the bleeding lawyer, but he’s sorely outnumbered. Although Myung-joon manages to overpower Jaden and break his arm in retaliation for what he’s done to Ro-hee, Ho-young leaves him with a slashed palm and trampled ankle, allowing our baddies to speed off with Ro-hee in their clutches.

It’s becoming increasingly clear that Jaden is more bark than bite, while Ho-young’s stoic efficiency and inscrutable expressions (or lack thereof) make him a force to be reckoned with. Previously, it seemed like Myung-joon’s sincerity might have gotten through to him, but he’s since gone right back to his usual brand of brutal violence, so perhaps sympathy is off the table. Ho-young’s motivations may still be an unanswered question, but at least Jaden’s goal is clear and consistent. Having noticed the necklace that Ro-hee always wears, Jaden doesn’t hesitate to snatch it right off her neck, suspecting that it may somehow contain a key to Professor Choi’s research.

Jaden’s quest for Professor Choi’s research also leads him to overlap paths with Sang-yoon, who notes the coincidence of running into Jaden twice at both Eun-seon’s clinic and the Choi residence. Although Sang-yoon has been saddled with a disciplinary hearing and a month-long suspension for his unauthorized investigations, he’s not going to let police bureaucracy stop him from pursuing the truth. Myung-joon had warned him of a leak from the police force, and it’s looking increasingly likely that the mole is Sang-yoon’s team leader. Uh-oh.

Joo Hyun Young Has Important Information That Would Shake Things Up In “The Kidnapping Day”

Oct 18, 2023

ENA’s “The Kidnapping Day” has shared stills of Joo Hyun Young’s upcoming cameo!

Based on the novel of the same name, “The Kidnapping Day” is a black comedy about a special alliance between a blundering kidnapper and a genius 11-year-old girl. Yoon Kye Sang plays Kim Myung Joon, a first-time kidnapper who abducts an 11-year-old girl to raise money for his daughter’s hospital fees. Yoo Na of “Pachinko” plays genius girl Choi Ro Hee, who has a cynical and exceptional mind despite her young age and forms an unusual bond with Kim Myung Joon.

Spoilers

In the previous episode, Kim Myung Joon (Yoon Kye Sang) was thrown into confusion after seeing his ex-wife Seo Hye Eun (Kim Shin Rok) in the CCTV footage of Director Choi Jin Tae (Jeon Kwang Jin)’s home, while Choi Ro Hee, who had been captured by Jaden (Kang Young Seok) and Choi Ho Young (Kim Dong Won), was about to leave for Russia. Meanwhile, Park Sang Yoon (Park Sung Hoon) found Choi Jin Tae’s research records and couldn’t shake his suspicions about Seo Hye Eun, so he got her to meet with Park Chul Won (Kim Sang Ho) and tried to eavesdrop on their conversation.

In newly released stills from the drama’s next episode, Joo Hyun Young is captured wearing big round glasses with an inscrutable facial expression. In one photo, she is captured glancing up at Jayden with a sly look on her face, making viewers curious about what kind of role she will play in the drama.

One thing that irritated me is that  Myung Joon had lunch with Rohee and Atty Choi when he should have been at his daughter's bedside before her operation.  Did I miss something?  You'd think his daughter would be scared, so shouldn't he have been there?  I know he cares for Ro hee, but after the operation he was running around again.  Despite this, I still enjoy and look forward to this drama.

The Kidnapping Day: Episodes 10-11

by solstices

At long last, our tender-hearted kidnapper is reunited with his unconventional charge, sharing a few precious moments of calm before the storm. Two alliances form on the pretext of common goals, but both are tentative and temporary — while one hits a snag due to distrust, the other may end up being torn apart by circumstance.

EPISODES 10-11

This show just keeps getting better and better, and it’s no doubt firing on all cylinders now as befitting of its penultimate week. We finally get the cop-kidnapper partnership we’ve all been wishing for, and boy is it glorious. When Sang-yoon finally catches up to Myung-joon at the pier, our despairing kidnapper confesses the entire situation, and Sang-yoon decides Ro-hee’s safety is worth joining hands with Myung-joon for the time being.

Elsewhere, Ro-hee’s escape plan launches into full swing when her shrimp fried rice knocks her out with an allergic reaction, leaving Ho-young with no choice but to take her to the emergency room. While he’s dealing with the paperwork, Ro-hee steals syringes and bottles of morphine, then sneaks out via a disposal truck.

With that, both our heroes, our heroine, and our formidable villain all converge at the disposal site. Sang-yoon tackles Ho-young, while Myung-joon pulls Ro-hee into a relieved hug (earning himself a scolding from the startled Ro-hee, ha). Everyone disperses when police cars arrive at the scene, and when Sang-yoon regroups with our kidnapping duo, Myung-joon grabs him in an awkward bear hug. Except it’s not out of gratitude, it’s a diversion so Ro-hee can inject morphine into Sang-yoon’s leg.

When Sang-yoon wakes, he finds himself tied up and at the mercy of our tiny terror. Ro-hee makes him promise not to arrest Myung-joon until everything is settled for good, and he acquiesces, because really, how can you say no to Ro-hee? Hahaha, I love that Ro-hee has gained another uncle to bully in banmal and extort meals out of. That’s also how we get the hilarious scene of Sang-yoon’s teammate CHAE JUNG-MAN (Jung Soon-won, who’s great at comedy as always) delivering burgers, frantically pointing his gun at Myung-joon, and eventually sitting down at the dinner table with our bickering duo and a very weary Sang-yoon.

The next day, our newly-formed uncle trio brings Ro-hee back to the Choi residence, where Myung-joon mops up every last trace of her parents’ murders before letting her in. Ro-hee adjusts to the new hideout, like she always has, but it’s obvious the house and its memories carry too much weight.

Detectives stormed into the house and arrested Kim Myung Joon right in front of Choi Ro Hee, raising anticipation for the drama’s ending.

Amidst this situation, the newly released stills capture Kang Ha Neul staring at someone with a gentle smile. The dark room with not enough light and the pentagram-shaped lawyer’s badge on Kang Ha Neul’s lapel add to curiosity about his identity.

Perfect 5/5 ending for the show and what a plot twist at the end to leave the possibility open for a sequel about gifted and genius kids! Absolutely amazing performance from Yu Na, who is casted as the brilliant Choi Ro Hee. She will win many awards next year.

And the ending was shot in Singapore for sure.....with an unintentional product placement for ComfortDelgro Electric Cab (our local taxi company here!) and an advertisement for the Grange Institution International Pre-School & Primary School, located in the Yio Chu Kang suburb area!

It's definitely unlike the swanky tourist destinations shown in "The Little Women" but I am always thrilled whenever a Korean drama is shot in Singapore :)

This is definitely one of my top 3 Korean dramas for this year, after "Moving" & "Revenant"
