Revenant: Episodes 5-6

by lovepark

The show delves deeper into its lore as our heroes uncover secrets from their past. However, the truth does not always bring clarity. Whether fate has brought them together or an evil spirit played a hand in their destiny, our two heroes must discover the real reason they were chosen for these ill-omened roles.

EPISODES 5-6

One elderly resident’s selfish desire puts the entire village at risk, but thankfully, Hae-sang knows how to fix it. He searches for the village’s jangseung (a.k.a. village guardians made out of wooden poles that act as guide posts) and finds the one the elderly resident used to trap the ghosts.

He begins chopping it down, but the elderly resident hits him on the head in hopes of stopping him. She begs him to let her daughter stay with her a little longer, but Hae-sang refuses to endanger everyone else for her futile wish. As he cuts down the pole, a mist engulfs the village, and the ghosts disappear with a haunting shriek.

Meanwhile, San-young stumbles across her dad’s spirit while running away from the other wandering ghosts. He tells her that it was not him and apologizes for what he did, saying that he had no choice. She asks for an explanation, but the mist takes him away before he can answer.

San-young wakes up in the hospital, having fainted after encountering her dad, and her mom comes rushing to her side. As soon as she sees Hae-sang there, Mom tells him to leave her daughter alone, but her concerns irritate San-young more than comfort her. Tired of her secrets, San-young asks about the due date she saw on her dad’s calendar, and Mom replies, “It was your younger sibling, who died here.”

2002. At seven months pregnant, Mom ran away from home after Gang-mo threatened to kill the baby, but alas, the wild-haired spirit possessing Gang-mo visited her in the night, causing a miscarriage. Then, the spirit went after San-young’s maternal grandma, and Mom witnessed her own mother fall down a well. Confused and afraid, she took San-young and hid.

Now that we know the circumstances, Mom’s lies become more understandable since, from her perspective, these strange deaths are linked to her husband. There was no other malicious intent behind her actions besides fear, and in that situation, I don’t blame her for escaping and not looking back. It also makes sense why Gang-mo never came back for them, but now that the spirit has latched onto San-young, I doubt ignorance will save them.

After some coaxing by San-young, Mom tells her more stories about her dad, including an odd tale about Jangjin-ri: the second child always dies. San-young immediately goes to Hae-sang’s place to tell him about her findings, but Mun-chun is already there, sharing his own new leads into the case.

On the police side of things, Mun-chun and Hong-sae link a few suicides to Gang-mo, and with these additional reports, Hae-sang confirms his suspicions that Gang-mo was possessed. Thus, the one who passed the cursed object to San-young and roped Hae-sang into all of this was not the professor but the spirit.

Still wrestling with this epiphany, Hae-sang barely registers San-young’s words as she explains to him that Lee Mok-dan was murdered by the whole village as a child sacrifice. She asks what they should do next, but all Hae-sang can think about is the spirit’s intentions. He sends San-young home for the night, and as she leaves, the student ghost hanging around Hae-sang eyes her with envy. Hae-sang tells him that his insatiable greed is karma for how he lived, but the student ghost blames Hae-sang for turning him into this.

Oh Yeon Ah portrays the shaman Choi Man Wol in the SBS Friday-Saturday drama Revenant (written by Kim Eun Hee and directed by Lee Jung Rim). In a previous episode, Choi Man Wol shocked everyone by coldly slashing a child who reached out for food to create a revenant, followed by an unsettling smile. In the 7th episode, the tension escalated further as the past between Choi Man Wol and Yeom Hae Sang (played by Oh Jung Se) was revealed.

In the latest episode, Choi Man Wol appeared in an insane state, attacking the detectives who came to arrest her. Trapped in a detention room after a struggle, she suddenly heard knocking sounds and quickly created a sense of fear with her eyes filled with dread as she screamed desperately, instantly creating a sense of horror. Later, her trembling and manipulated state left everyone breathless when the door opened.

In the past, at the request of Na Byung Hee (played by Kim Hae Sook), who intended to use the revenant, Choi Man Wol sacrificed the innocent Lee Mok Dan (played by Park So Yi) to enshrine the soul of the deceased child as a deity. From reciting incantations while listening to the child's cries to calmly letting Yeom Hae Sang's grandparents in after killing the child, Choi Man Wol exuded an eerie presence without a hint of guilt, intensifying the spine-chilling atmosphere.

Oh Yeon Ah captivated viewers with her overwhelming presence from her first appearance, instantly raising the immersion level of the drama. Most notably, she fully immersed herself in the character, enhancing the eerie atmosphere with her haunting gaze and speech, leaving everyone frozen in fear.

Meanwhile, Revenant airs every Friday and Saturday at 10 PM.

Time to process what I saw in episode 7.

I am certain these folklores have roots in societies for a reason. Still feel for Ujin even though a greedy spirit latched on to him as a child. It took root and possessed within him as a child. Smh

The extremes individuals will go to gain and keep wealth, power, privilege is suspect. It was suspect all along and now we see spirituality added to the mix and it even gets creepier and dangerous for the souls of the living. These evil spirits are passed down and skip around generations and offsprings. Whew! What an episode.

Ok, those involved need to seriously tell what they know to others involved and say they will, I don't know, call when they are outside with the speaker on. This is crazy!

I like the guest appearance by the Round Up captain.

Spoiler

Who was not the 2nd born, LMD, the little girl murdered in the village? The sacked officer found registry records from 1958, I thought.

I liked seeing both old and young detective work together on what each discovered. Even though both are 'nonbelievers' in the storyline up to ep 8.

Revenant: Episodes 7-8

by lovepark

Our heroes find themselves on diverging paths, and as the past comes to light, it drives a wedge between them. Unable to trust or confide in each other, they face the spirit on their own, but the weight of their forebears’ sins proves too much to carry. As they wrestle with their own demons and doubts, our heroes must make a choice before the darkness in their hearts consumes them.

EPISODES 7-8

San-young and Hae-sang have split, and the division between them only grows wider as they learn more about the evil spirit and its origin. Though they follow different trails, all clues point to the same horrifying conclusion, but before we dive deeper into this secret, a bit more context.

With guidance from the evil spirit and an unlikely partnership with Hong-sae, San-young digs deeper into the student hungry ghost Kim Woo-jin. This leads her to Hae-sang’s family and their conglomerate Junghyeon Capital, nicknamed samdocheon (the river between our world and the next). As she puts the pieces together, San-young suddenly loses her vision, and the past begins overlapping with the present.

At the same time, Hae-sang learns that he had a younger sibling who died, continuing the pattern of sacrificed second-borns. With Mun-chun’s help, he investigates the shaman who created the juvenile ghost and learns from her descendant that she received a large sum of money for the heinous act… from Junghyeon Corporation. Though he struggles to accept it at first, Hae-sang confirms his fears that his family was involved and confronts his grandmother.

1958. With their company facing troubles, Hae-sang’s grandparents took drastic measures and hired a shaman to make a juvenile ghost. Accepting the condition that this evil spirit would curse them for generations, they watched as the girl died for their greed, and in the midst of this gruesome scene, Hae-sang’s grandmother smiled.

In the present, Grandmother shows no remorse for her actions and seethes at Hae-sang for his impudence. She reminds him that he lives in luxury thanks to their decision all those years ago, and if it wasn’t for his mother stopping the spirit from possessing him next, they would have been even richer. Her admission sends Hae-sang reeling from the house, and out in the storm, he stumbles across San-young.

While Hae-sang learned the truth from his grandmother, San-young experienced the same event through the spirit and followed her to this house. She screams in agony as the memory overtakes her, and when she comes face-to-face with the grandson of those villains, she burns with rage: “After horribly killing that young child to create a juvenile ghost, did you enjoy living in a nice house and shamelessly spending your money?”

Ep 9. Certain events early on should not lead up to some awful romance, show.  If so, shame on you for injecting dribble into this genre.  Don't make me roll my eyes....

Anyways, love the reveals that lead to more questions and a desire to see grandmother hurt, really bad.....

On July 27th, SBS released a making-of-Revenant video from the sets of the K-drama on its official YouTube channel.

The video showcased Kim Tae Ri's mesmerizing portrayal of Ku San Young, a character possessed by an evil spirit.

In the revealed footage, Kim Tae Ri astounded the staff with her compelling performance of San Young downing 1.5 liters of bottled water in one gulp.

The production team lavished praise on Kim Tae Ri's remarkable performance, with captions in the video commending her for making the audience believe she was genuinely consuming the water. Viewers also showered praise on her bone-chilling depiction of the demon-possessed Ku San Young, with comments predicting she could be a strong contender for the Grand Prize at the 2023 SBS Drama Awards.

Looking forward to the 11th episode, the production team teased the growing intensity of the demon's final rampage now that its identity has been revealed. To counter the malevolent entity, San Young, Hae Sang (Oh Jung Se), and Hong Sae (Hong Kyung) must seek out the last item associated with the demon, which holds the key to its riddance. The team expressed their hope that the viewers will remain engaged until the very end.

Revenant is a story about Ku San Young (Kim Tae Ri), a civil service aspirant who juggles part-time jobs during the day, and studies for her exams during the night. One day, she gets her hands on an heirloom left behind by her father, and since then, she encounters mysterious experiences and deaths and finds herself gradually changing.

But there is one man who can figure out the mystery surrounding the inexplicable happenings and experiences of Ku San Young. Yeom Hae Sang hails from a well-off family and is a professor teaching Korean folklore at a university. Ever since childhood, he had the unique ability to see otherworldly forces and even witnessed his mother's death by a demon. Yeom Hae Sang sees the demon possessing Ku San Young, and together they try to uncover its true identity.
