Korean Thriller ‘#Alive’ Coming To Netflix On September 8

Following a remarkable domestic theatrical run in South Korea, zombie thriller #Alive will make its international premiere on Netflix NFLX -0.7% , September 8. Starring Yoo Ah-in and Park Shin-hye, the film has grossed a total of around $13.5 million in theaters and sold 1.9 million tickets. Netflix recently dropped a four-minute preview of the film on its Netflix Asia YouTube channel.

 

With cinema closures still in effect in several countries and many turning to streaming services to watch content from home — along with #Alive’s healthy following and top-billed cast — this strategy to premiere the film internationally on Netflix should indeed prove wise. Netflix will be a comfortable home for #Alive, with the streaming service hosting major titles like Train to Busan (on Netflix US) and Kingdom from South Korean cinema’s rising niche in the zombie thriller genre.

 

#Alive’s themes may also prove strangely resonant in these times, as the world grapples with the coronavirus pandemic. The film tells the story of a mysterious virus outbreak that suddenly spreads throughout Seoul and rapidly grows out of control. The city’s inhabitants fight for survival when the infection causes victims to attack each other, turning them into zombies.

 

In early August, #Alive achieved the top rank in video-on-demand sales since the first day of its post-theatrical release on July 28 in South Korea, according to a press release from Spackman Entertainment Group, whose indirect wholly-owned subsidiary, Zip Cinema, produced the film. #Alive rose to the number one position at top IPTV channels in Korea including KT's Olleh TV and Digital Cable TV Home Choice. Before that, #Alive was the first film to hit one million ticket sales since February this year at the South Korean box office.

According to the synopsis provided by Netflix, #Alive’s two main characters — Oh Jun-u (played by Yoo Ah-in) and Kim Yu-bin (played by Park Shin-hye) — struggle to survive in an apartment complex from those infected with the virus. They are trapped alone inside their apartments without access to cellular data, Wi-Fi, text, or phone calls. Their only source of information about the outside world is the news on TV and what they can see from outside their apartment windows. 

 

Yoo Ah-in is known for his work across films and television dramas including Burning, Veteran, Chicago Typewriter and Six Flying Dragons — while leading actress Park Shin-hye has played roles in You Are Beautiful, Pinocchio, The Doctors and Memories of the Alhambra.

 

Directed by Cho Il-hyung, #Alive is based on an original script by Matt Naylor, and produced by Zip Cinema and Perspective Pictures.

Netflix, the world’s leading streaming entertainment service, confirmed the international premiere of #Alive as September 8, 2020.

 

#ALIVE is a survival thriller film of people isolated in an apartment building without any means of digital communication. The survivors are in the brink of danger after a cryptic monster outbreak ensued to terrorize them.

 

When a mysterious virus outbreak spreads throughout modern day Seoul and rapidly grows out of control, people struggle to stay alive. The unknown infection causes victims to eat each other, turning them into zombies.

 

Oh Jun-u, played by Yoo Ah In, and Kim Yu-bin, played by Park Shin Hye, struggle to survive in an apartment complex from those infected with the virus. They are trapped alone inside their apartments without access to cellular data, Wi-Fi, text, or phone calls. While they are neighbors, Jun-u and Yu-bin have opposite personalities. Jun-u is a typical middle-class boy who enjoys computer games and social networking. He utilizes technology to survive. Meanwhile, Yu-bin incorporates more traditional items like camping tools and telescopes to survive. With their varying abilities, the pair work together to stay alive.

Actively working in films and dramas, Yoo scored remarkable roles in 2018 films Default and Burning. His notable portfolio also includes Chicago Typewriter, Six Flying Dragons, Sungkyunkwan Scandal and Veteran.

Popular actress Park Shin Hye is loved for her roles in You’re Beautiful, Pinocchio, and Memories of the Alhambra.

The sneak-peek video provides an exclusive look at Jun-u suddenly discovering the zombie outbreak spreading to his neighborhood. From the window of his home, he witnesses the horrifying pandemonium as some neighbors become zombies and some try to flee.
