Crash Landing on You

If you've ever been recommended a K-drama on Netflix, it was probably Crash Landing on You. The series stars Son Ye-jin as South Korean businesswoman Yoon Se-ri, who gets blown to the North Korean side of the DMZ by a tornado while paragliding. Ri Jeong-hyeok (Hyun Bin), a North Korean military captain, discovers Se-ri and decides to hide her until he can figure out a way to get her back to her own country. This show is the perfect K-drama starter because it includes so many of the genre’s signatures: fantastical story elements (a tornado, while paragliding!), sweeping romance, and silly/sweet melodrama.

Crash Landing on You Ending Explained: Do Hyun-Bin & Son Ye-Jin Get Together?

JUNE 04, 2024

COMING SOON NET EVOLVE MEDIA

Crash Landing on You
Hyun Bin and Son Ye-Jin in Crash Landing on You (Photo Credit: IMDb)

Crash Landing on You is one of the most popular and fan-favorite K-dramas. Hyun Bin and Son Ye-Jin (who later became husband and wife in real life) starred as the lead pair.

With a unique storyline, swoon-worthy romance, and electrifying chemistry – CLOY topped most of the leading charts and viewership ratings. The series’ storyline revolves around a South Korean businesswoman and heiress, Yoon Se-Ri (Ye-Jin), who lands on the borders of North Korea after an accident. There, she meets with Captain Ri Jeong-Hyeok (Hyun Bin), who works in the North Korean army. Unison of North and South Korea is a no-no. But Jeong-Hyeok understands the situation and lets Se-Ri stay hidden in his place.

Ri Jeong-Hyeok goes to all extent, even risking his life to help Yoon Se-Ri reach her hometown in South Korea. However, in the process, both of them fall in love with each other. It’s almost like a sin to form a relationship between a North Korean and a South Korean. But love doesn’t happen after measuring all of this.

“Crash Landing On You” : Is it a happy or a sad ending?

Not being able to stay apart and thinking about all the dangers Yoon Se-Ri can face, Ri Jeong-Hyeok embarks on a journey to South Korea. But in a certain turn of events, Se-Ri gets shot by the drama’s villain and is admitted to a hospital. Jeong-Hyeok stays in the hospital to look over Se-Ri at a distance. In the meantime, the army personnel of South Korea and North Korea concluded that the North Korean army people would be back in their hometowns without facing any harm.

Ri Jeong-Hyeok tries to cut his ties with Yoon Se-Ri so that she can have a happy life. But Se-Ri only wants Jeong-Hyeok. She runs towards him and hugges him as he is leaving South Korea. They confess their feelings to each other and try to calm each other down.

But that was not the end for Jeong-Hyeok and Se-Ri. While the captain returns safely, Se-Ri finds the notes and the food stacked by Ri Jeong-Hyeok for her. After a year of their separation, Jeong-Hyeok’s last message states that if fate is with them, they will be reunited again.

And well, while we don’t get to see a perfect happy ending for them, at least we get to see them together reunited. The ending of Crash Landing on You shows that they schedule two weeks in the whole year in Switzerland to spend quality time together. It ended on a bittersweet note, but probably this is the best happy ending the two characters could get.

This K-drama also featured a second lead pair, which garnered a lot of appreciation, too. And that is Kim Jung-Hyun as Gu Seung-Joon and Seo Ji-Hye as Seo Dan.

Hyun Bin and Son Ye-Jin‘s chemistry was on fire in this drama. They previously worked in the film Negotiation, where the fans loved their camaraderie. However, in CLOY, they outdone their fans’ expectations—so much so that they married each other in real life. And now they are parents to a son.

Hyun Bin♥Son Yejin effect ing..'Crash Landing on You' is shaking up the Japanese musical world

[OSEN]

Studio Dragon is leading the Korean Wave in Japan with the musical ‘Crash Landing on You’.

The drama 'Crash Landing on You', which was released around the world through tvN channels and Netflix in 2019, gained great popularity in Japan, being praised as the drama that caused the fourth Korean Wave boom, including ranking first in the Japanese Netflix TV show rankings in 2020. (Based on Flix Patrol) In addition, in the '2023 K-Content Overseas Expansion Status Survey' published by the Korea Creative Content Agency in January 2024, 'Crash Landing on You' is still considered the most frequently watched K-drama by Japanese people along with 'Winter Sonata'. It boasts a strong fandom.

Recently, thanks to the fandom of the original work, the musical 'Crash Landing on You' is achieving notable results in Japan. The 'Crash Landing on You' musical, which Studio Dragon presented in Japan in February together with Fuji TV, performance production company A2G Entertainment, and Astin Camel, received a warm response locally, with all tickets sold out in succession. Thanks to favorable reviews, an encore performance will be held from July 7 to 21 at the New National Theater in Tokyo, considered the best national theater in Japan. ‘Crash Landing on You’ is the first performance based on a Korean drama to enter the New National Theater in Tokyo.

Also, in November, 'Crash Landing on You' is scheduled to meet local audiences through a performance of 'Takarazuka Opera', which boasts 110 years of history in Japan. The Takarazuka Revue is a traditional Japanese musical troupe composed entirely of women, and has an overwhelming audience not only in Japan but also around the world. ‘Crash Landing on You’ is the second Korean drama to be exported through Takarazuka performances after ‘Taewangsashingi’ in 2009. The Takarazuka performance of ‘Crash Landing on You’ will be held at the Tatemono Brillia Hall in Tokyo from November 30 to December 15, and at the main hall of Umeda Arts Theater in Osaka from December 22 to 28.

A Studio Dragon official said, “It is significant that musicals are also performing well in Japan thanks to the continued popularity of the drama ‘Crash Landing on You,’” adding, “By expanding the hit drama IP into performances, we can increase the vitality and added value of the IP.” “Based on the performance of the musical ‘Crash Landing on You,’ we plan to further expand our performance business using drama IP in the future.”

Meanwhile, in August last year, Studio Dragon joined hands with Avex Pictures, a group company of Avex, a representative Japanese entertainment company, to transform the drama 'Vincenzo' into a musical and present it locally.

12 Series That Will Get You Hooked on K-Dramas

AUGUST 20, 2024

INDIEWIRE

With 'Squid Game' Season 2 coming Dec. 26, here are more great K-dramas to explore.

Ured feel-good series, and gritty crime mystery shows. If you like serialized stories, you’re going to like K-dramas. The trick is finding the right entry point.
Accordingly, we collected a handful of shows from within the last couple of decades that would be a good fit for the K-drama-curious. Consider this a starter pack with one example of different kinds of shows and sensibilities, each with a different set of hooks for American audiences. So if you’re ready to get yourself or a friend or family member into K-drama, here are some places to start.

“Crash Landing On You”

Apart from “Squid Game,” the K-drama that has most broken through with American audiences is probably “Crash Landing on You,” and it’s not hard to see why. The story combines a bit of the same class satire of the 1 percent that makes shows from “Succession” to “Dynasty” magnetic to watch with about as star-crossed a pair of lovers as you could have in  2024 — or more specifically, the year 2020, when the show first streamed and when lots of people all over the world were stuck at home with time to fantasize about a grand romance.

Son Ye-jin plays a South Korean heiress who, after losing control of her paraglider, finds herself stranded on the wrong side of the DMZ. She is discovered by an elite forces captain in the Korean People’s Army (Hyun Bin), who, instead of dealing with her by the book, helps smuggle her back to the South. Will she ever be the same? Will the many mines, literal and political, that separate them keep them apart forever? Will Hyun Bin somehow look progressively sexier just standing in place?
The answers to all of these questions are the main concerns of “Crash Landing on You,” but every character in this series is a delight.

Check this show out if you are into pulpy melodramas and the endangered species that is the American rom-com, but also if you appreciate strong subplots and side characters.

“Crash Landing on You” is available on Netflix.
