The Best Korean Dramas on Netflix Right Now

UPDATED MAR 12, 2022

The world of Korean dramas is a strange and beautiful place. The South Korean entertainment industry is slowly growing to worldwide dominance, as Kpop, Korean movies like Parasite and Minari, and Korean television series take the world by storm.

The term Korean drama, or Kdrama, refers to almost any South Korean fictional television series, no matter the subject or genre. That includes comedy, romance, sci-fi, horror, you name it. Most of these television series are based on webcomics, a form of storytelling similar to comics that originated in South Korea. You should generally expect a love story no matter the genre (save maybe horror), and the same actors are in pretty much everything. Fair warning, almost all Korean dramas have quite outlandish premises, but that’s honestly what makes them so good. You just have to learn how to accept the strange and unexpected and go along for the ride.

Recently, Netflix has become the go-to place to find the best Kdrama offerings for US audiences, with many shows being labeled as Netflix Originals. This partnership, as well as the overall shift to streaming, has also changed the business and structure of Kdramas, as previously, pretty much all Kdramas were around 16 episodes long and one season only. Although Korea and their media is still generally conservative, the international audience is definitely shifting perspectives to be more inclusive and representative of all types of people.

In order to help you jump headfirst into this new and expanding area of television, here are 28 of the best Korean dramas available to watch on Netflix, both original and not.

Editor's Note: This list was most recently updated on March 2022 to include The Silent Sea, The Heirs, and All of Us Are Dead.

Memories of the Alhambra

Writer: Song Jae-jung

Director: Ahn Gil-ho

Cast: Hyun Bin, Park Shin-hye, Park Hoon, Chanyeol

A true amalgam of genres, Memories of the Alhambra takes place mainly in Granada, Spain with a Korean cast. A science-fiction drama of sorts, the series follows the CEO of an investment company, Yoo Jin-woo (Hyun Bin), who travels to Spain in search of the creator of an AR game in development that feels way too real. When game and reality start to blur and someone is killed, Jin-woo, with the help of the developer’s sister, Jung Hee-joo (Park Shin-hye), must find the bug in the game and fix it before more people die.

Memories of the Alhambra is a breath of fresh air for Kdramas due to its setting and innovative premise. While at times the story lacks sense, the concept and execution are spot-on, and honestly, you can’t help but fall in love with Hyun Bin.

Is Memories of the Alhambra Season 2 still possible?

The South Korean television series, Memories of the Alhambra (Korean: 알함브라궁전의추억; RR: AlhambeuraGungjeonuiChueok) was obviously a commercial success, consistently topping the cable television viewership ratings in its timeslot after the release of released on December 1, 2018, and continued till January 20, 2019.

The drama has gripped viewers for its unique theme of augmented reality and earned praise for its high-end computer graphics, cinematography, and fast-paced storytelling. The series ended with many cliffhangers. Thus, the series lovers have not lost their hope.

The K-drama follows Yoo Jin Woo (Hyun Bin), the CEO of an investment company that deals with optical devices. After receiving an email regarding a groundbreaking AR game about medieval battles in the Alhambra, Yoo Jin-woo travels to Granada, Spain to meet the creator of the game, Jung Se Joo (Park Chan Yeol).

However, Se Joo has gone missing and luckily there he meets his older sister, Jung HeeJoo (Park Shin Hye), who is the owner of the hostel he stays in.

Jung HeeJoo is a former guitarist too. Both get entangled in mysterious incidents, as the border between the real world and the AR world built by Se-joo begins to blur.

Nearly four years after its release, fans continue to hope that the creators will definitely return with Memories of the Alhambra Season 2.

Even petitions were launched to compel the creators to renew Memories of the Alhambra for Season 2. Unfortunately, there are no words from Netflix or TvN on the drama's renewal.

In spite of positive response for Memories of the Alhambra Season 2 it seems the renewal is unlikely. But the South Korean drama is never officially canceled, which led many viewers to assume that the renewal of third season is just a matter of time.

We will definitely keep updating you on the K-drama as soon as we get anything new. Keep an eye on Devdiscourse for more news on the South Korean drama and movies!

K-drama stars who are forgettable despite playing leading roles:

Leading characters in K-dramas are supposed to be the star of the show with the most screen time. However, there are quite a few exceptions.

When it comes to major characters, the audience would immediately think of central characters with the most interesting stories and traits. However, sometimes “major” is just a title, and these supposedly main characters are completely outshined.

3. Park Shin Hye

When it comes to “Memories of Alhambra”, not many people can recall that Park Shin Hye played Hyun Bin’s on-screen partner. The reason is that her screen time is severely less than that of Hyun Bin, and her story isn’t that interesting either.

In particular, this K-drama revolves around the male lead’s journey into a mysterious game, and a huge part of the runtime is dedicated to solving the game’s many issues. Meanwhile, despite being the female lead, Park Shin Hye’s character is completely unrelated to this whole conspiracy.

As a result, Park Shin Hye contributed little to the plot, and was said to only be there for the loveline. Some netizens even went as far as to call Park Shin Hye’s character as the “most useless female lead in a K-drama”.

TV Shows We Love: Memories of the Alhambra

By Nikolaos PrakasSeptember 30, 20220 Comments191

tv shows we love

I remember watching the trailer of this series, and thinking it must not be that interesting, just some love story in Spain between two people from different worlds.

However, the first episode proved me wrong as it brought the main character Jin Woo to Spain – a hurried phone call from a teenager about something he wanted to give him.

We find out why at the end of the episode; it was access to a virtual reality game that could be powered by the lenses Jin Woo’s company in Seoul produces.

The game is an adventure through the Alhambra, and players fight off enemies.

However, the series is full of sudden twists with disappearances, glitches in the game that make it across the boundaries between the virtual and physical world, and even a love story that runs as an underlying theme.

The story travels continents and ends up in Korea, but the storyline keeps viewers interested and waiting to see what happens next.

Memories of the Alhambra is the kind of show a generation interested in the fantasy aspects of emerging technologies would lap up, and it keeps viewers interested through its multi-faceted nature that speaks to all.

The show kept me hooked, as it weaved the storyline and ended on cliff-hangers, leaving me wanting more, and deeply focused on solving the mystery and looking back through episodes to theorise how the plot would unfold.

It is a show you can binge watch, until the end. You will become engrossed with finding out more about the lives of the characters, keeping up with the time jumps to the past and the future, all key to the culmination of the series.

This is an excellent show to watch on a day-off and immerse yourself in the world of virtual-reality and the lives of the characters and how they are affected by the game.
