9 Veteran Idols Who Have Also Built Up Strong Acting Careers

It’s no secret that a number of idols have successfully tried their hand at acting over the years. In fact, we dedicated an entire article to K-drama actors who we almost forgot started out as idols. But what about the veteran idols who have built up an impressive acting career while still promoting with their respective groups? There are quite a few idols who have done just that, and it’s time we give them the credit they’re due.

Whether these actors are currently active as idols or have turned their attention to more dramatic pursuits, they’ve each captured our hearts both on-stage and on-screen. Here are nine veteran idols who have built up a solid acting career.

6. 2PM’s Taecyeon

Taecyeon.gif

Truly one of our all-time favorite idol actors, there was no way Taecyeon could be left off of this list. Though not the only member of 2PM to turn his attention towards acting, Taecyeon certainly deserves some attention for his acting prowess. Another idol to first capture our attention in the 2011 drama “Dream High,” Taecyeon has gone on to prove that watching him on-screen is guaranteed to delight. He did a phenomenal job in the 2013 drama “Who Are You,” and the ghost-filled 2016 drama “Bring it on, Ghost.” Then again, he was great in pretty much every role he was in, including “Save Me,” “The Game: Towards Zero,” and even as the antagonist in “Vincenzo.” Though if we’re being honest, we have to admit that we much prefer him as a hero as opposed to a villain. This is probably why he’s so lovable in his currently airing drama “Secret Royal Inspector & Joy.”

[K-Star’s Best Character] Ok Taecyeon Takes a Big Step Forward in His 10-Year Career

Ok Taecyeon fully showed his masculine identity as a member of 2PM. He started his acting career with KBS’ Cinderella’s Stepsister in 2010, three years after his debut as an idol singer. With a tall and strong physique and talent in sports, he took on the role of a baseball player in his debut film and completely disappeared into the role.

Playing a pure-hearted character, he speaks with a Gyeonsangdo accent in the series while pursuing his unrequited love for Song Eun Jo (Moon Geun Young).

Ok Taecyeon mainly excelled in particular genres of works. He played the role of Park Bong Pal, a student exorcist at a medical school in tvN’s Bring It On, Ghost (2016). As a character who can see, touch, and communicate with ghosts, Ok Taecyeon had delivered some legitimately satisfying action scenes when he had to catch an evil spirit in the series.

Also, he nailed the emotional scenes with his ghost partner, who had become a spirit wandering the earth due to the fact that she failed her college entrance exam when she was alive. Then, in Korea’s first occult thriller, OCN’s Save Me (2017), he played a high school student named Han Sang Hwan trying to save his first love from a cult group. He was well-received for showing a character who has multiple complex internal motives.

Ok Taecyeon moved his agency to 51K to focus on acting after being discharged from the military. He then took his first villain role in tvN’s Vincenzo. His character, Jang Jun Woo, started out as a young lawyer who has a crush on Hong Cha Young (Jeon Yeo Bin) but soon, he turned out to be the actual owner of the Babel group and showed his evil presence as the main villain. Jang Jun Woo, who relentlessly wields power over anyone, was the most brutal character he has ever played so far. One of his favorite scenes is when he is covered in pig blood, probably done out in homage to the movie Carrie.

Currently, Ok Taecyeon is greeting viewers as Ra Yi On in the historical fiction drama, tvN’s Secret Royal Inspector & Joy. This time, he plays an aristocrat who loves eating and drinking without a single interest in improving his career.

However, on the inside, he deeply feels remorse for the death of the Crown Prince, who was like a real brother to him.

After spending some time away in his town, he becomes a secret agent and goes through changes as he traces a series of mysterious events.

Next year, we may see him in another movie. In the upcoming movie Hansan (working title), which will follow Admiral Yi Sun Sin’s on his ‘Battle of Hansando,’ the actor will deliver us a great battle scene as one of the navy soldiers of Joseon.

We cheer for Ok Taecyeon, who keeps going forward with his ten-year career as an actor even though he hasn’t had any luck for major winning and awards or seeing significant success.

3 Heart-Fluttering Moments Between 2PM’s Taecyeon And Kim Hye Yoon In “Secret Royal Inspector & Joy”

dummy.jpeg?s=900x600&e=t

2PM’s Taecyeon and Kim Hye Yoon have been showing incredible chemistry in “Secret Royal Inspector & Joy”!

tvN’s “Secret Royal Inspector & Joy” is a historical comedy drama starring Taecyeon as Ra Yi Eon, a young gourmand who is appointed a secret royal inspector against his will. Kim Hye Yoon stars as Kim Jo Yi, a divorced woman searching for happiness who winds up joining forces with him to investigate and battle corruption.

Here are three heart-fluttering moments between the charming and dynamic “Jo Yi Eon” duo!

Spoiler

1. Their chaotic first meeting

Right off the bat, it was evident that Ra Yi Eon, who had unexpectedly become a secret royal inspector, and Kim Jo Yi, a newly divorced woman searching for happiness, were complete opposites. When they first met, Kim Jo Yi was unimpressed with Ra Yi Eon’s self-control in his disguise as “Bang Deuk-ie,” and Ra Yi Eon could not help but be shocked by the experience of being dismissed so casually for the first time in his life.

Kim Jo Yi did not hesitate to call out the mannerless Ra Yi Eon, leaving him at a loss for words. However, Kim Jo Yi was also occasionally caught off guard by Ra Yi Eon’s charms, such as when he recited difficult past tense with ease and refreshingly called out Pat Soon (Nam Mi Jung) for scolding Jo Yi. While he did make a fuss about it, Ra Yi Eon was ultimately always on Jo Yi’s side, even taking care of her final divorce documents, which hinted at the possibility of something more between the pair.

2. The birth of the perfect combo, “Jo Yi Eon”

Right before her divorce was finalized, Jo Yi ran into a secret royal inspector, an unwelcome visitor. However, she was even more taken aback when she realized the inspector was none other than “Bang Deuk-ie,” or Ra Yi Eon. He then pulled out the document of the ruling, announcing, “With my authority as a secret royal inspector, I approve this divorce,” thus giving Jo Yi the gift of freedom. The two then locked eyes, making viewers’ hearts flutter in what remains a memorable scene.

The moment marked the start of this dynamic duo, as their first effort at collaborating resulted in a success. After Jo Yi expressed her gratitude to Ra Yi Eon, he kindly replied, “You are the one who personally reclaimed your own life. Through your own courage.” His congratulatory recognition of Jo Yi’s worth and efforts signaled the start of the next chapter of her life.

3. Transforming into a fake married couple

After completing a mission, Yi Eon and Jo Yi went their separate ways to achieve their own set of goals. But what appeared to be a happy ending was turned upside down when the two reunited at a shrine and fell into a situation where they had to pretend to be married. As Kim Jo Yi had finally just gotten a divorce, the two were hilariously flustered as they became a fake married couple.

Ra Yi Eon and his crew snuck into the shrine to dig up the truth behind a suspected hotbed of corruption, but they were caught by Park Tae Seo (Lee Jae Kyun) and Cha Mal Jong (Jung Soon Won). To rescue them, Jo Yi confidently appeared and proclaimed herself to be Ra Yi Eon’s wife. However, they were only able to keep up the act for so long, as Cha Mal Jong told them to kiss if they were a real couple, or to curse the King. Jo Yi made the quick decision to kiss, shocking Yi Eon with her straightforward behavior. Stay tuned to see how their rollercoaster relationship evolves!

4 Reasons Why “Secret Royal Inspector & Joy” Should Be On Your Winter Watchlist

dummy.jpeg?s=900x600&e=t

The zany posters for “Secret Royal Inspector & Joy”‘ promised fun and cheer with a dash of political intrigue, and the drama sure has delivered. Taecyeon and Kim Hye Yoon delight in this fun comedy that steers just far enough from overt grimness to be a breezy watch. Eye candy aside, here are some reasons for why “Secret Royal Inspector & Joy” should be on your winter watchlist!

Note: the below is spoiler-free so read without fear!

Spoiler

1. The reluctant hero

taecyeon3.gif

Ra Yi Eon (Taecyeon) would really rather not be a royal inspector. So it’s a rather rude awakening when he goes from spending his days creating magnificent culinary creations to the applause of his two menservants Yook Chil (literally 67) (Min Jin Woong) and Goo Pal (literally 98) (Park Kang Sub) to being assigned the most deadly job a clerk of the Hongmungwan (Office of Special Advisors) can have.

taecyeon4.gif

Royal inspectors are in charge of ferreting out corruption (or rather enabling it, depending on how the wind blows), which often results in a painful death. Thus, Ra Yi Eon decides to eschew justice altogether and treat the job as a food tour across Joseon. Naturally, this doesn’t work out as planned. What’s so fun about his character is that he’s genuinely an ordinary guy. There’s nothing flashy to him per se. He’s no swoony muscle man (the character of course, not Taecyeon!), no medical genius, or Sherlock 2.0. The comedy isn’t overplayed to make him goofy, and he comes across as a levelheaded, slightly shy man who’d do anything to just chill. Of course we have a secret past and an explanation for why he is that way, but that’s for the show to impart!

2. The feisty divorcee

kim-hye-yoon.gif

Kim Jo Yi (Kim Hye Yoon) has had it with men and their mothers. After being married for far too long in her opinion, she petitions the local magistrate for a divorce with the support of all the town’s women. Save her mother-in-law of course. Chance and some skullduggery have her running into our royal inspector where she’s promptly smitten and furious that she’s smitten, so she treats him like she’d treat any other man, by being blunt and keeping her distance.

cdb42568899d08fb9cd0d37d2b5a36c83b9ac911

Refreshingly, despite the whole meet-cute with Yi Eon, Jo Yi’s priority is herself and her freedom. The strip of cloth cut from a man’s clothing and granted to his ex-wife upon a divorce is called a nabi, a homonym for butterfly in Korean. Like a butterfly, she wants nothing more than to set out into the world and forge her own destiny, no matter where it takes her. It’s a real bother then that she keeps getting unwittingly embroiled in other people’s problems.

7f6def0f9f5a0e0835a524598bd8862d44f8fb7d

Jo Yi is hilariously blunt and smart as a whip, often coming up with solutions before those around her have even noticed the problem. Thus, it’s all the more frustrating for her to be stuck in a town that she can talk circles around.

She has her flaws, of course: a dash of recklessness, an inability to bite her tongue even if it would serve her, and more good intentions than are often helpful. But Kim Hye Yoon’s smile lights up the screen, making her a delight to watch.

3. The dry humor

taecyeon2.gif

If you thought this show’s humor would verge on campy, think again! There definitely are a few of those moments, but much of the humor is actually quite dry, resulting on wordplay and situational humor than body humor or tired gags. It feels like a much less campy version of “Strongest Chil Woo” (for everyone who still remembers that drama). The characters take what they see and run with it without overdoing the moment. It’s hard not to smile along especially because Yi Eon’s exasperated face never gets old, as does the way this nobleman gets reduced to sheer panic around Jo Yi at times.

taecyeon1.gif

Classic sageuk tropes are used and cleverly played with. The bad guys aren’t bumbling idiots and see right through our inspector’s plans at times but then fail to catch other traps in other moments. Everyone’s pretty ordinary, their machinations feel hilariously flawed and human, and their jokes don’t have to try hard at all.

taecyeon5.gif

4. The social commentary

kim-hye-yoon5.gif

Despite all the levity, this show is still a sageuk, and that means political commentary in some way, shape, or form.

We start off with a bang with divorce and go progressively darker from there. But these weighty topics are handled with a surprising degree of care, proving that comedy doesn’t have to be insulting or condescending to make a point. People in this show grit their teeth and survive. It isn’t all doom and gloom. They’re capable of laughter and joy and don’t spend their days plotting revenge.

kim-hye-yoon6.gif

There’s still a weariness to their days that’s palpable through the screen, and there’s no denying they’d all rather be doing something else. Yet, where most sageuks dig through the screen to wrench at our hearts with immense depictions of suffering (that are no doubt realistic), this drama chooses to show its suffering in a quieter way, no less relatable, but perhaps a little more watchable after a long day at work. “Secret Royal Inspector & Joy” doesn’t paint our lead duo as the answer to Joseon’s problems but as a lens through which we viewers can see them and understand that any amelioration of these problems will always be temporary.

Bonus: The Crown Prince

The Crown Prince (Lee Joon Hyuk) is wonderful to look at. And he’s in this drama. That makes it all the more worth seeing.

lee-joon-hyuk.gif

lee-joon-hyuk2.gif

So, what are you waiting for? Grab a blanket, a mug of hot chocolate, and settle for a feel-good, relatable drama on navigating justice in a wild, wild world that’ll put a smile on your face. You won’t regret it!
