Cha Seung Won, Kim Seon Ho, and Kim Kang Woo will be starring in new film Tyrant (literal title), which began filming on January 2nd.

Tyrant tells a story surrounding the last sample of the government’s ‘tyrant’ program, which gets lost due to a delivery accident. Park Hoon Jung of New World, The Witch series and Night in Paris helms the upcoming movie.

Cha Seung Won takes on the role of Im Sang, a former agent who is tasked with eliminating anyone with knowledge of the ‘tyrant’ program. Kim Seon Ho plays Director Choi, the government official who has been privately running the tyrant program. Kim Kang Woo stars as Paul, an overseas intelligence agent who tries to destroy the program’s last sample.

Cha Seung Won said, “I am very excited and happy to show a different side of me through Tyrant. I will work hard with director Park to make the project great.”

Kim Seon Ho commented, “It’s such an honor to play the character Choi Gun Jang as he is a lot different from other characters I’ve played. I am thrilled to work with director Park again after working with him for his other 2023 movie called The Child (literal title).”

Kim Kang Woo said, “I am excited to be in this film as I’ve always wanted to star in this type of thriller. I will do my best every moment to make a good movie with great fellow actors. “

Netflix Takes K-Content to New Heights with 2023 Slate

The global fandom for K-content is continuing to grow, with over 60 percent of all Netflix members watching Korean titles last year. Looking ahead at 2023, Netflix is debuting a diverse array of Korean TV series, films and unscripted shows. Today, we’re showcasing 34 upcoming titles, including eye-popping original productions alongside returning fan favorites, in our biggest-ever lineup of Korean films and series.

New series and returning favorites

Survival has become a recurring theme across some of the top series, whether it’s battling monsters during the dark days of 1945 in Gyeongseong Creature (https://about.netflix.com/en/news/gyeongseong-creature-netflix-ups-the-ante-with-exciting-creature-thriller), struggling to breathe in the dystopian future of sci-fi series Black Knight, or fighting to protect Joseon during Japanese colonial rule in action drama Song of the Bandits.

Fans are set to rejoice with the return of highly anticipated series Sweet Home, D.P., and The Glory this year. Part 2 of revenge drama The Glory will be released in March, with Part 1 being the most-watched non-English TV show during the week of January 2 with 82.48 million viewing hours. Sweet Home, which set new benchmarks for the creature genre in Korea, will return with an expanded world and story while D.P. brings back the cast from the first season to continue chasing after deserters.

“The global popularity of K-content has continued apace over 2022, with Netflix bringing a wider variety of stories and genres to fans around the world. Over the last year, Korean series and films have regularly featured in our Global Top 10 list in more than 90 countries, and three of Netflix’s most-watched shows ever are from Korea. This year, we’re pushing the envelope even further with the stories we tell and how we tell them. With this lineup of Korean titles, Netflix will continue to be the ultimate destination for compelling, diverse and must-watch Korean storytelling,” said Don Kang, VP of Content (Korea).

Other new series this year run the gamut of romance (A Time Called You, Behind Your Touch (WT), Crash Course in Romance, Destined With You, Doona!, King the Land, Love to Hate You, See You In My 19th Life), social commentary and intrigue (Bloodhounds, Celebrity, Mask Girl), drama (Daily Dose of Sunshine, Queenmaker, The Good Bad Mother),and apocalyptic (Goodbye Earth).

More films, more unscripted shows, more choice

The past year has seen Korean movies and unscripted shows becoming increasingly popular with global audiences. Action thriller Carter was one of the top 10 most-watched non-English films last year, while dating reality show Singles Inferno is currently sitting in the Global Non-English Top 10.

This year, Netflix is expanding its film offering with six Korean movies, kicking off with sci-fi thriller JUNG-E on January 20, followed by Kill Boksoon which depicts a professional killer with conflicting maternal instincts, and Believer 2, a sequel to a crime action thriller revolving around drug gangs. Other films explore the topics of revenge (Ballerina), teacher-student rivalry (The Match), and hacking (Unlocked).

Meanwhile those who love living vicariously will be spoilt for choice with a dazzling lineup of reality shows, spanning endurance (Physical:100, Siren: Survive the Island), zombie survival (Zombieverse) coming of age (Nineteen to Twenty), and mind games (The Devil’s Plan).

There are also two new documentaries coming out. Yellow Door: Looking for Director Bong’s Unreleased Short Film (working title) traces the quest for Oscar-winning director Bong Joon-Ho’s debut film while true-crime documentary In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal explores the self-proclaimed ‘messiahs’ in modern Korean history.

“We are very excited over the variety of the titles that we’re sharing with our members,” said Kang. “There’s truly a series, a film or an unscripted show for everyone, and we look forward to our Korean shows connecting to fans both overseas and at home.”

Find out more details about each show in the Appendix.

Korea’s Acemaker scores sales of ‘The Tyrant’, ‘A Man Of Reason’ (exclusive)

BY JEAN NOH | 19 MAY 2023

South Korea’s Acemaker movieworks has sealed deals on Park Hoon-jung’s upcoming action film The Tyrant (working title) and actor Jung Woo-sung’s directorial debut A Man Of Reason to a slew of territories.

The Tyrant has pre-sold to Germany (Splendid), Taiwan (MovieCloud), Southeast Asia (Purple Plan), Thailand (Neramitnung Film), CIS (Paradise Group) and inflight (Eagle).

Director Park is the filmmaker behind hit features The Witch: Part 1 and Part 2 and Venice title Night In Paradise as well as upcoming action feature The Childe, which is in post-production.

The Tyrant is shooting now and stars Cha Seoung-won (Night In Paradise), Kim Seon-ho (TV’s Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha) and Kim Kang-woo (The Vanished).

It follows what happens when the final sample for the ‘Tyrant Program’, which is developing drugs to turn humans into weapons, is delivered to the wrong person and several shady parties interested in exploiting the programme chase after it.

The film is expected to release in 2024.

“Director Park Hoon-jung’s previous work The Witch: Part 2 – The Other One was one of the most successful Korean films in Taiwan last year,” said Wayne Chang, manager of Taiwan’s Moviecloud, who said the cast, storytelling and action of The Tyrant would make it a “must-see” title.

‘A Man Of Reason’

Separately, action drama A Man Of Reason has sold to North America (Epic Pictures), Germany (Splendid), Spain (Youplanet), Japan (Klockworx), Taiwan (MovieCloud), Southeast Asia (Purple Plan), Thailand (CJ tvN HK), Mongolia (Filmbridge), CIS (Capella), Australia (Purple Plan), Scandinavia (Nonstop Ent) and Poland (9thplan).

The film made its world premiere at Toronto last year but is receiving further post-production before its expected release this August.

Director Jung (Hunt, Steel Rain 2: Summit) also stars in the film, which has a cast that includes Kim Nam-gil (Emergency Declaration), Kim Jun-han (Beasts Clawing At Straws) and Park Sung-woong (The Great Battle).

The story centres on a gangster who is released after spending 10 years in prison on behalf of his boss and discovers he has a young daughter. He tries to cut ties with his old gang but the boss is not ready to let him go and hires a notorious killer who takes the girl hostage, spurring her father to go back to violence.

Netflix Greenlights First Collaboration with Legendary Filmmaker Park Chan-wook in ‘War and Revolt’ (WT)

Set against the chaos of war, the highly anticipated War and Revolt (WT)  takes viewers on a gripping journey through the lives of two childhood friends turned adversaries. Starring Gang Dong-won as the formidable Cheon-young and Park Jeong-min as the conflicted Jong-ryeo, the historical film will captivate audiences with its thrilling narrative and star-studded cast.

The inclusion of globally acclaimed filmmaker Park Chan-wook as producer and co-writer adds another layer of excitement and significance, as it is his first film collaboration with Netflix. Known as the filmmaker who put Korean cinema on the map, Park Chan-wook has garnered international acclaim for his distinct storytelling style and visually stunning films.

In War and Revolt, Gang takes center stage as the enigmatic Cheon-young, a character whose remarkable martial prowess defies his humble origins as a slave. Struggling to break free from the chains of servitude, Cheon-young will be brought to life by Gang's extraordinary talent, exuding charm and delivering breathtaking action sequences that will leave audiences in awe.

Opposite Gang, Park Jeong-min assumes the role of Jong-ryeo, Cheon-young's former master and scion of Joseon's most influential military family. After passing the military service exam, Jong-ryeo becomes King Seonjo's personal guard, leading to a heart-wrenching reunion with his former friend. Park's portrayal is expected to be nothing short of mesmerizing, as he delves deep into the complex psyche of a man torn between friendship and duty, ultimately facing his own downfall. Both Gang and Park are sharing the screen for the first time.

Exceptional ensemble cast to bring tale to life

Adding to the stellar cast, Cha Seung-won steps into the role of King Seonjo, a monarch who abandons his people at the onset of the Japanese invasion, only to seek redemption by restoring his royal authority after the war. With a proven track record of delivering riveting performances, Cha is set to enthrall audiences once again with his portrayal of the turbulent ruler, embodying the complexities of power and resilience.

Kim Shin-rock, known for her remarkable performance in Hellbound, portrays the resolute Bumdong, a member of the civilian militia who fearlessly defies social norms and confronts any obstacles that cross her path. Jin Seon-kyu takes on the role of Kim Ja-ryeong, a civilian militia leader descended from the traditional ruling class who emerges as an inspiring force amid the chaos of the invasion. Meanwhile, Jung Sung-ill, hailed for his intense performance in The Glory, brings the intimidating Japanese warlord Genshin to life, a character who recognizes Cheon-young's extraordinary swordsmanship.

Director Kim Sang-man, lauded for the daring and unique storyline on action-thriller Midnight F.M.,masterfully combines the dramatic elements of life during a tumultuous era with exhilarating battle and chase sequences, promising an immersive experience that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

War and Revolt is produced by MOHO FILM, the powerhouse behind notable works such as Decision to Leave, The Handmaiden, and Snowpiercer, in collaboration with Semicolon Studio.
