Lee Young-ae stars in film about air pollution

image

Lee Young-ae has returned to the movie scene with the short film “The House Below.”

The film, directed by Lee Kyoung-mi (“The Truth Beneath,” 2016), is a project for the JTBC TV show “Suitable for General Viewing,” which follows independent filmmakers and entertainers collaborating on original films.

The role marks Lee’s first film performance since she starred in the 2005 crime thriller “Lady Vengeance,” directed by Park Chan-wook.

The film centers on the issue of fine dust and air pollution in Korea. Lee plays the main character, a woman who receives unwanted second-hand cigarette smoke from her downstairs neighbors.

“The film’s genre was originally ‘house horror.’ During filming, we shifted it to psychological drama,” said director Lee.

It was reported earlier this month that Lee Young-ae donated her fees from the film to the Seoul Independent Film Festival.

The film airs on JTBC at 10:30 p.m. on Sunday evening.

Actress Lee Young-ae donates 100 million won to hospital foundation

SEOUL, Feb. 2 (Yonhap) -- Actress Lee Young-ae has donated 100 million won (US$92,712) to a local hospital foundation, it said Friday.

She made the donation to the Yonsei University Health System on Dec. 6, asking that the money be used to fund various research conducted by its Severance Hospitals, treat child cancer patients and help people in need.

The Yonsei University Health System runs three Severance Hospitals in Seoul and its adjacent city of Yongin.

Including the money, Lee is known to have donated nearly 500 million won last year alone for low-income and multicultural families, and low-income pregnant women.

"I came to join the donation campaign out of the thought it is very important to develop a society's medical level as its fruit can be shared by not just one patient but many others," Lee was quoted as saying during a recent ceremony to deliver the donation.

The Asianwide star of the famed South Korean TV series "Daejanggeum" last appeared in "Saimdang, Memoir of Colors," a 28-episode series aired on SBS TV early last year.

LEE Young-ae to Make Big Screen Comeback in FIND ME
Kidnap Drama Marks Directorial Debut of KIM Seung-woo

by Pierce Conran / KoBiz

Actress LEE Young-ae is about to make her big screen comeback as she has signed on to appear in her first feature film in 13 years, since PARK Chan-wook’s revenge drama Sympathy For Lady Vengeance (2005). Production outfit 26 Company announced on February 21 that LEE would return in the kidnap drama Find Me (working title), which will be the first work of director KIM Seung-woo.

Upon receiving the script, LEE was reportedly impressed by the in-depth characteristics of the lead role, a mother whose intellectually disabled son goes missing from a playground in front of their home. A mother of two herself, LEE was taken by the unique maternal instincts detailed in KIM’s script.

Known for classics such as Joint Security Area /JSA (2000) and One Fine Spring Day (2001), LEE has taken on intermitted roles in TV dramas following Sympathy For Lady Vengeance and last year appeared in the short film The Lady from 406 from director LEE Kyoung-mi.

First time director KIM previously worked in the production department of films such as the drama Traces of Love (2006) and LEE Chang-dong’s Secret Sunshine (2007).

The project is now searching for the rest of its cast members as it eyes a production start date in the first half of the year.

Period spy-romance series starring Lee Young-ae to air next year

SEOUL, June 5 (Yonhap) -- Actress Lee Young-ae will return to the small screen with a new spy-romance series set in colonial-era Korea that will premiere next year, the show's PR agency said Tuesday.

"Different Dream (English title pending) will be broadcast worldwide next year when the nation celebrates the centenary of the establishment of the provisional Korean government during Japanese colonial rule," Seoul-based agency The Tik Tok said.

Set in Seoul, Manchuria and Shanghai during the Japanese colonial rule of Korea (1910-1945), the series revolves around Kim Won-bong, who led a major group of Korean independence fighters called "Uiyeoldan," and a surgeon named Lee Young-jin, played by Lee, who is adopted by a Japanese couple and later hired as a spy by the Korean government-in-exile in Shanghai.

The casting for other major roles, including Kim Won-bong, is currently under way and shooting will begin at overseas locations in Mongolia and China this fall, according to the agency. It remains undecided which television network will distribute the series.

"We're going to present a quality drama that can be received well both at home and abroad and befit the centenary of the provisional government," said Han Seok-won, one of the drama's producers.

Lee last appeared in "Saimdang, Memoir of Colors," a 28-episode series that was aired on SBS TV in 2017.

[Orion's Daily Ramblings] Lee Young-ae and Yoo Ji-tae in Talks to Join Ambitious Historical "Different Dream"

photo993704.jpg

This project didn't properly register on my radar for quite a while, and news on it has been sketchy, at best. While the thought of Lee Young-ae and Yoo Ji-tae in a spy-themed sageuk does sound rather exciting, I do have major reservations about the creators. Personal worries aside, the latest news on "Different Dream" provides more information of the premise and the main characters.

Lee Yo Won In Talks To Take Over For Lee Young Ae In Upcoming Espionage Drama

There are some changes being made to an upcoming drama.

It had previously been reported that Lee Young Ae would be appearing in the drama “Lee Mong” (tentative title), an epic drama with approximately 25 billion won (approximately $22.15 million) invested in production fees.

However, Lee Young Ae announced on August 14 that she has decided to withdraw from the project. Her agency stated, “After much deliberation, a final decision has been made to not appear in the drama due to many factors, including Lee Young Ae’s schedule.”

With Lee Young Ae stepping down from the project, it has been revealed that Lee Yo Won is currently in talks to replace her. Her agency was contacted and they responded by stating, “It is true that Lee Yo Won is in discussions to take on the leading role of the drama. She is currently in the process of ironing out the details."

“Lee Mong” will be an espionage melodrama that takes place in Gyeongseong (present-day Seoul), Manchuria, and Singapore during Japanese colonial rule. If Lee Yo Won agrees to the role, she will be playing Lee Young Jin, a beautiful, bright, and confident surgeon who dreams of saving the lives of many. Yoo Ji Tae is in talks to appear as the leading male role of Kim Won Bong, the leader of a group of spies fighting for independence.

The drama is scheduled to begin airing in spring 2019 on MBC.

By Choi Hyun-mook The Chosun Ilbo

2018100401741_0.jpg

Actress Lee Young-ae on Wednesday sent the Chosun Ilbo W50 million for the victims of a massive earthquake and tsunami that hit the Indonesian island of Sulawesi last Friday (US$1=W1,122).

"As a mother raising kids of my own, I was shocked to hear about children in the devastated area losing family members and going hungry," she said. "Though the amount is small, I decided to make a donation to help."

She mentioned that Indonesia helped South Korea during the Korean War by sending relief goods, and more recently that Indonesians are huge fans of Korean dramas and pop music, including her own hit series "Jewel in the Palace."

"I hope that many people will help in this effort," she added.

Korean businesses are also pitching in. SK decided to send aid of US$300,000 and is considering having affiliates provide additional assistance. LG will donate 3 billion Indonesian rupiah (W220 million) for relief efforts.

'Parasite' headlines Korean cinema in 2019

By Jason Bechervaise The Korea Times

Last year it was Lee Chang-dong's "Burning" that stood out. He certainly didn't disappoint. In 2019 it is Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite" that holds the most promise in terms of the Korean films set to hit screens over the next twelve months.

In truth, this year it's looking a bit lighter than usual, perhaps reflecting two concerns for the industry: a string of high-profile films such as Kim Jee-woon's "Illang: The Wolf Brigade" flopped in 2018, while working regulations to limit the amount of hours crews can work is set to increase budgets.

That being said, there is still much to look forward to. Indeed, in 2018 there were encouraging signs in the form of mid-budget features such as "Little Forest" and "On Your Wedding Day" that succeeded in pulling in the crowds. Some of the best Korean films have been produced on such budgets making this a healthy development for the industry.

'Parasite'

Quite possibly premiering in Cannes in May with a local release soon to follow, there is much to anticipate with a new Bong Joon-ho film. But this new feature is notable because it will mark his return to Korean language films; his last Korean film that was not an international co-production was "Mother" in 2009.

Starring Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong and Jang Hye-jin, it follows two families who are markedly different yet also alike. Shot around the country including Jeonju where a set was built for the film, comparisons are already being made to Kim Ki-young's 1960 classic "The Housemaid" that centres on a family.

Much like Lee Chang-dong, Bong is incapable of making a bad film. Expect this to feature in top 10 lists at the end of 2019.

'Hit-and-Run Squad'

Released in time for the Lunar New Year season, Han Jun-hee's action-thriller looks promising. Han who brought us the thrilling "Coin Locker Girl" brings together Kong Hyo-jin ("Door Lock") and Ryoo Joon-yeol ("Believer"). The pair work together on a hit-and-run squad to bring down a former formula one racing driver who has become a businessman.

'Beasts that Cling to the Straw'

Featuring a host of names including Jeon Do-yeon, Jung Woo-sung and Youn Yuh-jung, it's the casting that makes this one to look out for. Directed by Kim Yong-hoon, the mystery-thriller is an adaptation of Sone Keisuke's novel of the same name. It follows a number of characters as they find themselves in challenging circumstances.

'Birthday'

Also starring Jeon Do-yeon is the first commercial film to deal with the 2014 tragic Sewol ferry sinking. The actress will play a woman who is coming to terms with the death of her son who was on board the ship, while Sul Kyung-gu will star as the boy's father. The drama will mark the feature debut of Lee Jong-eun who has worked under Lee Chang-dong on "Secret Sunshine" and "Poetry."

'Astronomy'

Han Suk-kyu and Choi Min-sik reunite in Hur Jin-ho's period drama about Korea's most revered monarch King Sejong, and the renowned scientist and inventor Jang Yeong-sil. Han will play the King, while Choi has been cast as Jang. The pair played leading roles in the seminal action-thriller "Shiri" (1999) that ushered in the local blockbuster era. Famous for his melodramas, Hur Jin-ho also collaborated with Han Suk-kyu on his iconic film "Christmas in August." The director will be hoping to repeat the success of his period film "The Last Princess" that was a commercial hit in 2016.

'Naratmalssami'

Another period film also centered on King Sejong to be released in 2019 is Cho Chul-hyun's feature debut. Featuring Song Kang-ho and Park Hae-il, the film follows the King (Song) and the monk who assisted him (Park). King Sejong is famous for having created Hangul, the Korean writing system. Cho has produced a number of films including many of Lee Joon-ik's features, while he also co-wrote Lee's "The Throne" ― also starring Song Kang-ho.

'Find Me'

In her first role in a feature since Park Chan-wook's "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" Lee Young-ae's return to the big screen is bound to attract attention. The actress plays the mother of a boy with cognitive impairment who goes missing and she goes looking for him. The film marks the feature debut of Kim Seung-woo.

'Chiefs of Namsan'

Although Woo Min-ho's "Drug King" was a disappointment, his next political thriller about the former Korean Central Intelligence Agency Chief Kim Jae-gyu who assassinated former President Park Chung-hee in 1979 sounds intriguing. With Lee Byung-hun playing the lead role as Kim Gyu-pyung (based on Kim Jae-kyu), it is perhaps more in line with his hit "Inside Men" than his more recent film that failed to fully integrate the turbulent 1970s backdrop. Given the story, comparisons to Im Sang-soo's "The President's Last Bang" are inevitable.

Other films

There are also a host of other films set to greet audiences this year. Kim Joo-hwan who made the immensely entertaining "Midnight Runners" is helming the action film "The Divine Fury" starring Park Seo-joon. Kwon Oh-kwang ("Collective Invention) will bring us "Tazza 3," Jang Jae-hyun ("The Priests") returns to Catholicism in "Sabaha," Won Sin-yeon ("The Suspect") is set to provide much spectacle in the period action film "Battle," while Kwak Kyung-taek and Kim Tae-hoon are partnering up for the Korean War film "The Battle of Jangsari" that will star Hollywood actress Megan Fox.

Actress Seeks to Buy Ailing Hospital

By Son Ho-young The Chosun Ilbo

2019010201007_0.jpg

Actress Lee Young-ae has decided to join a consortium that wants to buy the cash-strapped Cheil General Hospital & Women's Healthcare Center in Seoul.

A staffer at Lee's management agency said Tuesday, "If Cheil General Hospital goes into court receivership, Lee will join the consortium to acquire it." Another source at the consortium said, "We have no specific plans yet."

Lee has a soft spot for the hospital because she gave birth to her twins there in 2011 and regularly visits it with her children. She also donated W150 million to it for free medical services for low-income households, single mothers and other needy patients (US$1=W1,114).

Cheil hospital opened back in 1963 and was Korea's premier medical center for obstetrics treatment until 2000, but its financial woes have been mounting due to the country's falling birthrate.

Top actress joins consortium to resuscitate dying ob/gyn hospital

By Park Si-soo The Korea Times

optimize

Korea's top actress Lee Young-ae has joined a consortium formed to take over a famed ob/gyn hospital in severe financial crisis.

Her agency confirmed the actress' participation in the consortium with her wealthy friends on Monday, adding they will take over Cheil General Hospital & Women's Healthcare Center if it files for bankruptcy.

Cheil, the nation's first child delivery-specialized hospital with 55 years of history, is taking steps to close in the fallout from Korea's declining birthrate. The hospital recently closed its ward and delivery room and suspended most of its treatments and services.

"Lee has a strong private attachment to the hospital because she delivered her children and has gotten treatment there," Lee's aide was quoted as saying in a report. "She learned about the hospital's crisis in May and has since explored ways to help it."

Lee's agency said her decision was to keep a "good ob/gyn hospital" afloat, especially in a time of declining birthrate.

Lee gave birth to her twin children at the hospital in 2011 and has had her children treated there.

She has donated 150 million won ($134,000) to the hospital to help pregnant women from low-income and multiracial families and unmarried pregnant women.

Lee Young Ae Reportedly In Talks To Play A Sniper In New Film

Lee Young Ae may be appearing in an action film!

On April 12, sources in the film industry said that Lee Young Ae is positively considering director Song Il Gon’s follow-up project.

If the actress were to accept this role, it would be her biggest transformation on-screen since her debut. She has reportedly been offered the role of a sniper. The film, which does not yet have a title, will be about a female character who used to be a legendary shooter. She was once a mysterious shooter and lived an ordinary life after retiring until she unexpectedly gets swept up in a case.

A source said, “Recently, Lee Young Ae and Song Il Gon had a meeting, said they would work together in the film, and made a verbal agreement. Since it’s a change from their previous works for both people, there’s a lot of interest from people in the industry. I think Lee Young Ae wants an acting transformation.”

Song Il Gon has been recognized for his detailed directing through his films such as “Flower Island,” “Spider Forest,” “Feathers in the Wind,” “Always,” “Forest of Time,” and more.

Lee Young-ae to Return to Big Screen After 14-Year Break

2019081201171_0.jpg

Lee Young-ae is making a comeback to the big screen after a 14-year hiatus with the mystery thriller "Bring Me Home."

The film, which is scheduled for release in Korea in November, has been invited to the "Discovery" section at this year's Toronto International Film Festival next month.

Lee's last appearance in a movie was in 2005's highly acclaimed psychological thriller "Lady Vengeance" directed by Park Chan-wook. That role was a departure from Lee's usual image as a trendy, modern woman.

But despite high expectations over her next project, Lee then took a long break from acting altogether before returning in 2017 with a TV series.

"Bring Me Home" tells the story of a dedicated mother who never loses hope of finding her missing son.

The festival's "Discovery" section is devoted to introducing new directors around the world with their debut or second feature films.
