Just saying, I can't imagine if I am still single and having big crush on LMH, I will be much crazier fangirl, I will be insane, I guess. lol.

Fortunately I am married, at least I can keep most of my sanity intact.

    :joy:

LMH's charm is so addictive, he's just irresistible.

Ahaha it's funny that you mention it. I've followed LMH on and off since his BoF days, and my boyfriend always has the same reaction every time he sees him: extreme eyeroll.

He's like: "What do you even see in him anyway, he's just a tall Korean dude."

Boy, LMH Oppa has been a fixture in my life long before you came into the picture, he ain't going away anytime soon.

As for hairstyle, I gotta say I really liked his hairdo in Gangnam Blues, but maybe it's because I also really enjoyed his "rougher" side. I don't really like when he's too pampered.

Otherwise his hair in Tkem was okay too. Overall, I'm part of the "messy & without bangs" club. The more we see his face, the better it is!

  2. I've stared to read TKEM's novels and since the book gives us more depth to the characters’ personalities by delving deeper into their thoughts, I figured I'd share some interesting tibdits. (Initially shared on tumblr).

    3c0fff12fa4deed039a2eccce922b44e3d675ed8

    The scar

    >> When the palace aide buttons up Gon’s shirt in episode 1, he asks him whether he should help him cover his scar. (We don’t get to see that part in the show.)

Gon replies there’s no need, as he considers his scar as part of who he is. This symbol of his past is not only part of the nation’s history, but it also made him who he is now, and he sees no point in hiding it.

This scar is not only his, but it is also something that he shares with the Kingdom of Corea.

    Gon & Maximus

    >> The riding grounds is Gon’s favorite place. This is the only place where he gets to be free of all burden. All of his duties / obligations seem to fade away whenever he rides his horse.

One of the reasons why he cares so much about Maximus is because she was born right around the time the world as he knew it crumbled to pieces. (I thought horses only lived up to 25-30 years? Wouldn’t she be hella old then?)

    Trauma~

    >> Ever wondered why Gon seemed so unfazed after the rowing competition? I mean, the man was basically at the scene of a shooting attempt and he doesn’t seem perturbed in the least. He was more preoccupied by chasing “rabbit”-hooded Luna than his own welfare.

Although he admits that the day’s events turned out to be a bit more unusual, for him it’s just yet another day of the year. Another day of him dutifully following a jam-packed schedule, attending obligations that leave him exhausted by the time he gets back to the comfort of his own home. He follows the same motions every day.

This is why he always takes time off once or twice a year, to just breathe and be just by himself. Sometimes though, those times spent alone don’t appease him, as the silence / void in his life takes over.

He perfectly understands that by being born into Corea’s royal family, there is no such thing as living a quiet life.

Whenever he thinks back about that fateful day 25 years ago, he feels anxious. He perfectly remembers the feeling of his bare feet touching the sticky texture of blood on hardwood floors. Even though he leaves his collar open, he distinctly recalls the feeling of being suffocated.

Whenever he thinks about that day, he feels like an 8 year old boy again, completely helpless and scared.

    Misc.

    >> Unlike the drama, the novel doesn’t open with treason night. It opens to present-day Corea with the Palace aide buttoning Gon’s shirt up.

    >> The first chapter is titled “Chasing the white rabbit”

    >> The treason night flashback happens only in the second chapter (that I haven’t read yet).

I am loving the subtle but sweet gestures of Choi Young in this episode. The hair tuck, the tying of dagger on her leg. Simple yet have considerable impact in the development of their relationship. And so the love story of our Imja couple flourishes on.

The 12th episode marks a shift in their dynamic, where they both go beyond the "intrigued" and "curious" stage, and they start actually caring for each other.

For me, the halfway mark of the show aka episode 12 is when it starts to get truly interesting in terms of character development because:

    - Choi Young starts to fall for Eun Soo

    - Eun Soo's first thoughts isn't to leave Goryeo and go back to present-day Seoul anymore. She starts to get comfortable in her new world, she's getting attached to her companions (the Queen, the Woodalchi boys).

Also, can we talk about Choi Young's flirting skills (or lack thereof) : he gives the girl he likes a freaking knife.

Like how is Eun Soo supposed to interpret that?

Apologies if these have been shared already. HD pictures of our Daejang:

  4. That gif you posted of LMH hitting his head on the door frame had me in stitches... @Thong Thin

I love how despite his good looks, handsome tallness and badass sexy vibes, LMH is just a huge awkward klutz. What a dork, I love him sfm lmao.

I found the appearance of White clothed guy (noodles? Is this how we call him?) and his crush on Choi Young a bit random but nonetheless a good comedy break in between scenes.

Now in hindsight, I wonder what is his backstory and how his "acquaintances" with CY began. Has he always sported an obvious crush towards him? Does he relish making him uncomfortable by being openly flirty with him? So many questions haha.

    --

Things are finally getting interesting for our Imja couple as we get around episode 10. And we have our Daejang sporting a new hairstyle!

Someone on tumblr pointed it out but in the promo for episode 10, Choi Young sports a look that has never been actually aired:

Did it not perform well in focus groups? Did they think it was too much for female audiences to handle? Waaeeee~

  5. Yay for the event thread spotlight! Glad he gets the recognition he deserves. Despite his gigantic fanbase, I feel like a lot of the general public judge him because of his roles. Like they don't even give him a chance and think that he "only uses his good looks to land cliché romantic rich guy roles".

Too bad for them because our boy can a c t .

Anyways, I'm curious to see how his career is going to evolve from now on and whether he will take on more movie roles.

It would be interesting to see him in an action movie or thriller - or in a role that's completely different from what he played so far.

Although I really do appreciate all his projects, I think it could be super interesting to see him break out of this pretty boi™ image, by interpreting something more dark or rougher. So he can show the world his true range and versatility.

And who knows maybe one day, he'll fly out of being an "oppa" to take on "ajussi" roles (yeah I'm looking really far ahead )

On this note, I'm just going to leave this here:

  6. Hi, I originally posted this on tumblr, but thought it would be interesting to share on here also:

    Language subtleties and translation nuances

    Episode 2

So straight up from the beginning, Jung Tae Eul uses informal language (반말, banmal) when speaking to Lee Gon. This is corroborated through her body language and tone of voice, but from the English subtitles alone, you can’t really tell what level of formality she uses.

    682c4554cb3ca01d437659dbeba34341b9cb37cd

In the French subtitles however, they use the pronoun “vous” which is the formal way of referring to someone. Which is weird af. Why did they do that? I’m no translator so I’m sure they had their reasons, but using “vous” adds distance and doesn’t really convey the fact that Jung Tae Eul basically talks in a disrespectful way to a stranger. In Korean, it is usually quite rare for someone to use 반말 (informal language).

반말 (banmal) is reserved for childhood or very close friends of the same age, or couples (반말/banmal is not always disrespectful, it also conveys intimacy between two people.)

So the fact that she uses 반말 here adds emphasis and gives clues to her character and personality: headstrong, not intimidated, pissed and not impressed at all at this tall good looking stranger that just hugged her for no reason. These clues are completely disregarded in the French subtitles which straight up ignored the fact that she used an impolite way to express herself by choosing the pronoun “vous” in the translation.

    30a7f44810f1ffd9a41dc85ffd294512ce057a2e

(Moreover, they translated this sentence to “You know my rank?” – instead of “How do you know my rank”, but I guess that’s a detail).

As for Lee Gon, he uses a very stiff way of expressing himself. Not using “honorifics” nor speaking in a “deferential” way. He uses a plain (kinda polite, but plain) speech level, as if he would address someone close or younger than him. Again, in normal settings, a stranger would not speak this way to the person they’ve just met. They would use honorifics.

Cut to the scene at the police station:

    814959a76f51f8d439c3d34441c2363edb2da6c7

This is their first verbal sparring that made my heart flutter. Why?

    - Tae Eul continues to use 반말 (again either very impolite or intimate. Given the context, it’s the former).

    - Gon uses a neutral way of speaking but with nuances that tells the viewer he’s speaking down to someone.

    - Seeing that Tae Eul uses 반말 (banmal), Gon asks: “Are we dropping the formalities?

Here, the Netflix English translation says: “Will you keep talking down to me?”. But that isn't right as LMH uses the verb “놓다” (nohta) which means letting go. So “dropping the formalities” would be, in my opinion, a more accurate translation.

    - Tae Eul then interjects: “You’ve dropped / let go of the formalities since Gwanghamun.”

    - To which Lee Gon replies: “내가 세살 오빠던데” (“Nae ga sae sal oppa deondae”) (legit fangirl moment).
THIIIIIS. The inflection he uses, everything in his tone suggests he’s.making.a.point.

Netflix translates this to: “I’m three years older than you.” which is meh because it doesn’t convey the true mood of Lee Gon.

Most of all, the translation is wrong, because if we want to be accurate in terms of his attitude and the words he actually uses, it would be:

As I recall, I’m three years your Oppa [senior].

    He uses the word “oppa”.

He could’ve actually used the word “senior”, but he uses “oppa”. Why is that important? Because here, it implies in-ti-ma-cy. He uses “oppa” in the sense of what a girl would call her (older) boyfriend.

    - Tae Eul finishes with “나는 외동이야” (”Na neun woedongiya”) (again, using very informal language).

The subtitles says: “Does it matter right now?” but she actually says: “I’m an only child.”

–> Tae Eul deliberately ignores Gon’s provocation and replies as if he was being literal. By replying “I’m an only child” she quips back and implies he’s not her Oppa. (Oppa also means “older brother” to a younger sister).

    See?

The tone, the verbal back and forth. It gives depth to KGE & LMH’s acting, and adds to the dynamic chemistry of their characters.

Watch the clip again (starting at 1:17) and see how it makes all the difference.

  9. I forgot I had my noise cancelling headphones on when I pushed 'play' on that Domino Pizza video. Man, I legit got goosebumps hearing LMH's voice in HD quality  - was not expecting such a clear, deep and crisp voice in my ears.

Sorry, that pizza looks absolutely horrendous, but anything goes for LMH I guess.

    Choi Young’s point of view:

My heart felt as if it was still dropping – and plus now, it was throbbing. According to Jang Bin, my body hasn’t fully recovered yet. It must be my weak body pulling my heart down and making it fragile – it seems to be feeling a lot more and is quickly getting more intolerant to getting wounded.
“Let’s go our separate ways. I can make the journey alone.” She says those words so easily.

I did my best to control my feelings and raised my head. If my heart doesn’t regain its previous state of nonchalance soon, I will definitely start losing my ability to wield my sword.

It's adorable that he thinks his heart beating rapidly has something to do with his recent injury. Oh Choi Young, my sweet summer child. It's called falling in love. It has nothing to do with your wound.

In hindsight, it's hilarious reading his POV, because if he thinks this is it, he's dead wrong. Our girl Eun Soo is about to put his heart on a rollercoaster ride

    Eun Soo’s point of view:
I want to know what he is thinking at the very moment, I want to know what he thinks of me as he looks at me. I want to know everything that matters to him. Because I want to look at him, because I want to hear his voice, I keep talking to him. His honest responses, his awkward gazes, everything about him makes my heart flutter. Whenever he stares straight into my eyes, I cease to breathe.

I must be crazy. A person from another world. A man who kidnaps and kills as easily as drawing a breath. More than anything, he is someone who is mentioned in textbooks. He is not a man from some one-night stand. That’s what I’m trying to say. If I enter into a romantic relationship with this man in this world, will I also be mentioned in textbooks?

Exactly. I am crazy. No matter what, before it is too late, even if for just for one day less, I think it is best this man and I quickly go our separate ways.

Also super interesting to see her POV in the book. She's started to fall for him too, and we don't really perceive that during the scene in the show.

I'm just... I'm in love with their love.

  11. Hello dear faithlings~ like @vangsweetie637 I've been MIA for a few days too. Just got back from a holiday break, and I still have no internet connexion at home (currently maxing out my 4G connection haha).

Since I was bored and was already maxing out my cell phone plan anyway, I've been watching bts videos of the show. Do any of you guys remember this one:

This video doesn't have any subs, but it's during filming the early episodes, back when Eun Soo operates on Choi Young after stabbing him with his sword.

The video starts with the voice over saying: "Kim Hee Sun is looking very serious in her role as surgeon. Lee Min Ho is also deeply in character, playing the patient and isn't moving at all. Howeveeer... huh? It looks like he fell asleep."

Then KHS explains to the camera: "He fell asleep for real, because he was exhausted. Earlier we were filming, he fell asleep, and woke up startled."

And then Kim Hee Sun, the director and the actor who play Jang Bin proceed to talk behind his back (lol) while letting him sleep. Kim Hee Sun says that LMH fell asleep filming the day before too, with his mouth wide open.

Then the guy who plays Jang Bin says: "Min Ho called me afterwards and told me "hyung I think I really fell asleep yesterday while filming. I even had a nightmare to the point of being annoyed. Hyung um, was I annoying? (can also be interpreted as "I hope i didn't mess up anything")" "

KHS then says: "Min Ho called [Jang Bin] because he was worried he was being annoying"

Because he was still in a deep sleep, someone from the crew had to physically wake him up. He looks so out of it hahaha.

He then says: "I usually need 7 to 8 hour of sleep. Last night, we didn't shoot anything but I had other engagements so I barely got 2 hours of sleep."

Then the clips wraps up with Kim Hee Sun sharing candies with the cast and crew. She even set up a buffet for the crew ! She truly is a saint <3

(No but seriously, can we talk about the fact that Mr Lee literally fell asleep while shooting a scene lol)

  12. Okay I’m going to pause for a sec here. Because despite all the hardships she’s been through and how confused she must be, as soon as she gets into surgeon mode, she shows what she truly is: a fearless, determined, intelligent, resourceful, strong woman. I’m a sucker for well written female leads, and KHS killed it with her brilliant interpretation of Eun Soo.

    I just-  :bawling:

... besides our main characters, am really liking doctor jang and how keenly he pays attention to her. even if he may not have all the modern knowledge or technique, he does not give up and wants to keep finding out medicine/treatment to try keep his patients healthy... so that helps him move forward even when his job seems discouraging...

This is what makes his character so interesting: the internal conflict between his deep sense of duty (fulfilling his promise to his late Master), his guilt as well as his growing personal feelings toward this somewhat weird yet intriguing hot chick that just barged into his life.

Dr Jang is the best! Really loved his character. His calming presence must have been a real source of comfort for Eun Soo (can you tell I really like Eun Soo, am n°1 stan). I really loved how their friendship developed.

  13. Hi~

Just passing by to show my appreciation for queen Go Eun! I had never watched any of her works before and discovered her through The King Eternal Monarch a couple of weeks ago. And man oh man!

I was blown away by her performance, she's so talented? And expressive? I don't know there's just something in her that stands out. I really enjoy the aura she exudes, she just seems so genuine and brainy and just plain herself, without any bravado.

Anyway needless to say that I now need to go through all her filmography starting with Goblin. I don't know if I'm ready for this.

  16. After binging on the show for the past three days with blatant product placements shoved into my face, I finally caved in and went to a The Alley store to grab a bubble tea. (Call me a weak, easily influenced gal )

And lo and behold, what do I find on the window display?

    IMG-1461.jpg

This can't be a coincidence right?! But why "Kingdom" though ? It's such a random choice of word?

Do you guys know if other The Alley venues have this kind of display too? And it's so weird because in the show, the shop only exists in the Rep. of Korea universe.

Or maybe it was a glitch in the Matrix and I was transported into the Kingdom of Corea universe?

  17. @mademoisellesia, @kdyes : not a specialist of sageuk talk, but based on what I know, we have two veryyyy different meanings for Imja:

First meaning is an informal way of saying "you" : pretty sure I heard Choi Young say "imja" to Gi Cheol at some point during the show. It's a derogative way of referring to someone.

Second meaning is... an endearing way to refer to one's wife/girlfriend (or whatever the equivalent of a girlfriend is in the 1300s). Imja means "darling" / "honey".

EDIT: but nobody in modern Korea says "Imja" to their partner lol.

I guess it's the old fashioned equivalent of "Yeobo"?

But then again I've never lived in Korea so I don't know the cool words to call their gf/bf, besides the classics "jagi", "oppa", "noona", "yeobo". Or my favorite "yah!"

EDIT 2: Again, don't take my explanations at face value, I'm a fake Korean hybrid, I have no idea about the symbolic meaning this word carries.

Choi Young is always so serious and looking grave in the first few episodes, I'm glad Eun Soo broke through that thick shell of his to bring some fun into his life.

He used to be so carefree back when he was part of the Red Moon Army (okay he was younger then too) it's nice to see him bloom again throughout the episodes.

It is a cult popularity. Being a sageuk is a disadvantage, as many people shy away from it including myself. The recapper is correct to say it stood the test of time because look what happened 8 years later? I was very surprised that the new fans are giving good reviews for Faith and fell for Choi Young. Although a lot had to do with @Heretorant's selling skills. And I am shocked I am being sucked into 4th season of recap. 20 years later, will we be doing 100th recap? LOL LOL LOL.

Lee Min Ho, do you see this? The contributions and devotion from your Minoz and Drama Fans?

We need to understand the media that report about LMH's dramas probably didn't watch his dramas. It is highly likely they look at statistics (gross and popularity) and decided Faith is not worth the mention. They are not drama/movie critics.

I'm sure we all know very well now that statistics do not always reflect quality of the show. It's objective and a personal preference.

@violetts Nomu nomu NOMU kamsahamnida for the translation.

Everyone, please give Violetts a huge thank you, yeah? :)

I think you perfectly summed up why Faith is so active and loved even after all these years. It lures you in with LMH and traps you with its great storyline, complex multi-dimensional characters and excellent plot development.

Yesterday, I went out with a coworker turned friend who has absolutely no clue about korean entertainment, has never watched a korean drama. And I managed to convince her to watch Faith just by showing her LMH's instagram page and telling her about the summary of the show.

Her first reaction when I showed her a picture of LMH:

"Wait- I didn't know Korean guys were so tall and.... hot?!"

I'm actually going over to her place on Saturday to give her my hard drive with all the Faith episodes loool.

Awww don't thank me, it was a great pleasure. If you guys have any more videos you'd like me to translate, feel free to ask!

It pushes me to keep up and maintain my Korean languages skills haha.

And here's the translation for the second part of the video which is shorter than the first one :D

So the second video begins with the end of the first one, with Kim Hee Sun asking Ryu Deok Hwan how is his alcohol tolerance, to which he replies he has never measured it before.

RDH: "I'm not a casual drinker" (loose translation, really not sure about this part).

"But I'm great at drinking bomb shots."

KHS: "Ah you mean you mix the drinks together~"

Everyone laughs. KHS hides herself (she's so cute lol)

LMH's turn as interviewer: "I'm going to start by asking a question to Ryu Deok Hwan."

"When considering a relationship, what is the thing that attracts you the most?"

RDH (hesitates a long time and grabs his jacket's lapels while everyone look at him, waiting for his answer in anticipation)

Yu Oh Seong (= Gi Cheol, I finally looked up the actor's name ㅋㅋ): "I think it's this" (while making the same gesture and grabbing his jacket's lapels.)

    Everyone laughs.

RDH: "I look at the face first. It's not just about the face being pretty, but the face needs to suit me."

LMH: "And how do you know when a face matches / suits you?"

RDH (completely contradicting himself): "That means the face needs to be pretty."

    Everyone laughs again.

RDH: "Yes it was a lie!"

LMH: "My next question goes to Kim Hee Sun sshi"

"Who is your favorite idol member lately" (but literally translated, he says in Korean: "Who is the idol that attracts your eyes the most lately").

LMH & KHS both laugh at the same time.

KHS: "Hmmm, there are SO many. But if I have to choose... I think I like Lim Si Wan."

She then turns to PSY and asks her "What do you think?"

    They both laugh.

LMH: "So if you had to send a video message to Mr Lim Si Wan what would you..." and he bursts out laughing and adds "if you could just look at the camera on my side" (that little punk lol)

KHS (embarrassed): "Uhh, Si Wan sshi hello~ "

I couldn't hear who exactly says this, but someone says: "Ah what's wrong with this ajumma" (speaking of KHS).

KHS: "Yes, hi, I follow your career and I also sing along your songs. Thank you for showing us your best self, and please keep on looking the best in the future~"

    [end of video]

    I freaking LOVE this cast.

As you remember (I hope), the Faith-related translations is extracted to the Soompi Faith blog for keepsake (especially now, god knows how long this forum will stay afloat after the huge 3 days scare we had!), please give me your consent to put them there for this too? :) Credit will of course be given in your username :)

To show my utmost gratitude, I give you...

Please lean closer to the screen to receive your gift.

Of course you can take the translations !! I wish I could’ve taken more time to translate them better...
(There’s a faith blog? I didnt know about that )

And that gif should come with a warning!

@Min2206 Yeah. It was hilarious when RDH goes, "You dislike women?!"

It’s also so funny that LMH immediately replies « No OF COURSE I like women » hahaha.

You can clearly feel everyone in the cast is super close, the way they tease each other and seem comfortable around one another.
