@ktcjdrama Gah...I am conflicted now (re Just Between Lovers).  Who should I ship?  KangDoo (JunHo) or the second lead JooWon (Lee KiWoo) with MoonSoo (WJA)?  .  I actually prefer JW but I know she will probably end up with KD

I take that back...I am SO on the KangDoo-MoonSoo ship now... .  Writer Nim convinced me otherwise  .  See this is how writing needs to be.  A slow build up.  Connected minds and then hearts.  Little moments which tug at your heartstrings to swing your allegiance.  Sigh...this drama is beautifully done.  Nothing outlandish. Gritty reality but characters that sing and make you live in their world if only for a bit and empathize.  Logos, Ethos and Pathos... Aristotle would’ve been proud.

  2. @Sushimi I think that is the advantage SiWan and Do KyungSoo have over a lot of others.  They have this angelic face but they can add sinister to it...and they are not afraid to go there...which makes them a lot more scary. Like Edward Norton in Primal Fear.  Not many can pull this off.  It can’t be taught either I feel.  They are both instinctive actors.

LKW character always seems shady to me, until I found out why.

Ooo...spoiler alert just there.  . I thought he was kinda too good to be true.  We’ll see as the drama unfolds if I will switch allegiances :)

EDIT - @Sushimi...sorry if i have spoiled it for those watching.  I haven’t read the Webtoon so I am just guessing here.  It can’t all be true coz the bulk of them would’ve ended up in a mental institution already or else the Police are just hopelessly inept.  I can imagine one serial killer or weirdo in the mix but Everyone?    Unless the gositel is actually a mental institution?

Sorry I thought you were referring to my post just before yours where I was talking about JunHo. . Yes SiWan is very good.  He can pull off a variety of roles convincingly.  Even bad villainous ones.

Re SFH I get the feeling there’s a huge twist in the end.  They can’t all be that crazy in real life.  It’s all happening in his head.  The people are real but how he perceives them is all happening inside his head...much like how schizophrenic people view their world.

hahaha.. sure sure :) it’s rather interesting that he chose i]that role. Believe me when I say, he is not acting as the character..he is the character :P I honestly love it :) thus I fell for him lol.

I assume you are referring to the actor JunHo?  Not my cup of tea but his character works.  I am not impressed with ruffian types hence my leanings towards the second lead Lee KiWoo (well mannered, and kind - I adore kind men).  He (JunHo) seems to be another one of those idols who transitioned well into the acting world.

  7. @Sushimi I bailed when I saw the stills of LDW’s dentist character and the blood on the patient in his dentist chair.  And the leering of the twins got to me.  I believe the drama was well done so kudos to SiWan for being brave and picking something outside the box. But I am not great with gore.  Or exploration of criminal minds.  And it’s not like there are any sane people in the mix to balance it out?  Everyone in that Gositel (?) is weird.  :o

@Dhakra well in Vagabond Suzy’s character (not Suzy per se) is what annoyed me most.  Bad writing.  She is exhibiting all the attributes of someone who is a liability out in the field - over confident, lacking instincts (or sense sometimes), almost comedic?  If I were DG (LSG’s character) I would ditch her and try to team up with Assassin Lily who is out to kill me but she’s got what it takes to help me take out the bad guys (which is pretty much EVERYONE else - the government, NIS and evil Arms Lobby company).

O and thanks to @Ameera Ali, this is the cowboy gif (on a plane ) in Melting Me Softly (Western version of Romeo and Juliet)...

  8. @ktcjdrama I just watched first 10min of Just Between Lovers with WJA and I love it already. Thanks for the recommendation  .

 @Dhakra see I don’t remember any of that...so it’s just proof that I left my brain at the door when I watched it.  I have a feeling because there was that fantasy element in it, I didn’t expect logic.  Melting Me Softly because it has cryogenics (which has some science behind it), I expected more... and sadly... it’s just all slapstick.  I mean the whole 1st Ep was just that... relentless... so I am going to have to bail.

    Quote

Not to forget all these horrible Romeo & Juliet scenes?

Now that you mentioned it...writer employs same ploy in Ep2 of MMS... cowboy and pregnant wife (?) on a plane enroute to Arizona...to grow cactus (?) and ride camels

Give Vagabond a go and let me know what you think.  The production flaws and weak writing killed it for me.  So I am bailing on that too.

Melting me is written by the same person as SWDBS...the style is slapstick...so it won't be everyone's cup of tea. I dropped SWDBS mid-drama even though I can take a lot of silly humour ...( being probably the only person here who enjoyed Waikiki 1 & 2) . So it is one of those dramas that where viewing lens is important , or it will really torture you. The teasers are already very cheesy...so you can be assured it will only multiply in cheesiness :joy:...run before it is too late ...

For some reason I don’t recall SWDBS being this cheesy...but maybe I was in the mood for that then. I guess because it was JCW who just excels in action and melo I was expecting something more balanced.  Suspicious Partner had some comedy but it was well balanced with serious crime in there too and he had a lot more time to showcase the breadth of his acting skills.  Melting Me thus far is just overkill for me... bar that one brief tender moment he shared with WJA when their eyes met and they spoke wordlessly.  So in spite of me wanting to watch JCW again after his hiatus in the army, I think I will have to give this a miss like you suggested.  A bit too much cheese.  And it’s the same with Vagabond.  I don’t know why there is so much “comedy” written into Suzy’s character?  I desperately want to take her seriously (because let’s face it, she’s an agent and she is in life/death scenarios regularly - in the Vagabond world anyway), having her drunk kiss a colleague SSR (is he her superior?) and talk condescendingly to LSG’s character is just making me think she should just stick to a desk job and leave all the action in the field to LSG.  It’s not coming across as endearing if that’s what the writer wanted the audience to feel.  She’s coming across as ditzy?  So I can’t buy it now that she will magically move from that to super agent Lara Croft in the matter of 1-2 episodes.  She doesn’t possess the instincts necessary to survive long term out in the field.  The fact that she’s had assassination attempts on her should heighten her senses so she’s continually watching her back like LSG is now.  But instead she’s swanning around the airport like she owns it.

As in I loved everything you said in your dissertation .

I just watched Ep1 of Melting Me Softly...sigh...too slapstick for me and story is not exactly gripping either .  I really wish the 2 leads were in a drama with less slapstick and more angst (melo).  Honestly the only time I really connected with them was that one moment when they were serious with each other (he was trying to convince her to join the experiment)...and they shone. I wonder why they picked it?    I feel like their talents are just wasted in this drama?  But the positive is that I am in love with this new actress Won JinAh.  Her deep voice register gets to me.  She reminds me of Seo YeJi.  Both can do slapstick and for some reason I don’t cringe too badly when they do it.  I need to watch her previous dramas which are more serious in nature.  Is Life any good?  What about Rain or Shine?  She won awards for that so I may delve into that instead.

@Sushimi what? Surely no...there must be more to the story than that?  That may be his defence but I can’t see the court just turning a blind eye.  There must be other extenuating circumstances for that verdict.  Sometimes I find newspapers tend to sensationalise things just to get readers interested and when you dig deeper the story isn’t like that at all.

Honestly though, everyone has different tastes, so I don't understand why people has to be get judged for liking a drama that you perceive it as poorly written or badly acted out. That is just your opinion and I'll not stop you from writing what's on your mind but some people just straight out insult the others for liking a drama. I used to say this to @themarchioness I honestly miss those days when I didn't know of soompi and dramabeans or other sites and I would peacefully enjoy a drama on my own without being afraid of getting crucifixed for swooning over my oppa.

Yeah I agree with that.  I don’t mind people for liking any dramas or watching purely for the sake of their oppas.  Actually I thought it was status quo to swoon in any thread .  So you would be in the majority in the thread.  It’s people who don’t that stick out and are in the minority?  I have also learnt to use the Ignore Users function which just blocks out those user posts altogether.  Or start a private chat with users you know who love to swoon and share the same taste in dramas.  There are many ways around the system.  Going into the main thread section means you need to be comfortable to take the good, bad and ugly.

It's not even when bad behavior is put on a pedestal, it's when people totally celebrate something as "best drama", "best plot" or whatever  and in reality it's so thin, so poorly written or just plain dumb and the only reason they love it, it's because they fav actor/actress plays in it or had a cute scene, regardless of the story. DBS is also a very good example here.

But I've seen it in many dramas, where poorly written storyline is simply outshined by hype.

.  That’s when I take it with a grain of salt because a lot of the time you’re dealing with high schoolers who are liable to take swings at you for “spreading hate”.  And label you as an “anti-fan” just because.  I had to laugh because when I was sifting through the arguments presented in the SWDBS forum, there was one poster who made her argument and then as a closing statement added the disclaimer - I am NOT a high school student (or something to that effect)  as if her age would add credibility to her point of view.

Well honestly, if I just dislike a drama I mostly just leave the thread quietly, if chingus participate there I leave a quick note, because most of them do already know that I have a short fuse on dramas and that I am annoyingly picky.

Ditto.  Vagabond is like that for me.  I am hanging on by a thread because the writing is...predictable and it leaves much to be desired.  I feel bad for LSG (and even for Suzy) coz it’s apparent he’s giving it his all.  But no amount of good acting or action scenes will save a badly written plot.  Here I think it was just laziness because this drama is fully pre-produced so in theory, writers weren’t pushed for time like live filming dramas.  So bad writing and glaring production errors should’ve been minimal?  The thread has suddenly increased exponentially with more jumping in now to watch so I can leave with a clear conscience knowing that there will be others left to carry on .

But it's something different if I really, really DISLIKE something and it starts to annoy me. Especially if there are folks there, who cheer on something for the sole purpose of cheering on something. Then I just need to explode somewhere and leave. It's like the person  once told me. I burst , leave my pile straight in the middle and leave. Because some things have to be spoken out..

Yeah I get that too when it’s something that digs at my conscience and I can’t just stay silent.  When bad behavior is put on a pedestal and lauded as fan girls gloss over it just because their hero/heroine can do no wrong.  That’s usually when I march in and take the bullets as they come flying knowing full well what I am walking into.  Generally though if that occurs, I tend to batten down the hatches and sit tight for the long haul.  Probably stay for longer than I should.  Robust discourse isn’t a bad thing.  It tends to help fortify my case or at times it will reveal holes in it so I need to reform my arguments so I have a better case next time.  It’s a learning experience.

Well ironically just copped my fair share of “bashing” in Vagabond.  I think I will watch one more ep of Vagabond and then move to watch Melting Me Softly instead.  When I find myself nit picking even when I am trying hard NOT to, it says something about the production just having so many glaring holes that it’s unavoidable.  And there are those in the thread who really seem to be enjoying the show so I will leave them to do just that.   I will rant in @packmule3‘s blog instead.

I counted 7 shots from that gun (in rapid succession without cocking it again)  ...and I swear the cylinder only holds 6 bullets... .  Never mind the fact that when she pulled out bullets from the tin, there were 6 and she hastily only grabs 5 at best before heading out?  Plus why does she have her gun unloaded?  You would think that as an agent you would have it loaded?

Wow......in the middle of nowhere. Your level of boredom must have been insane. I'm actually a bit impressed.

So did you read the whole thing? Was it as bad as I thought/said or did you think it wasn't too bad?

Response is long so I put it in a spoiler. Nah I only read some responses to get a handle on where they are coming from.

    Spoiler

I think you were just targeted because of the circumstances.  I find that all these female centric type dramas attract “feminists” (many of whom are closet feminists) in their hoards.  And they aren’t terribly consistent if that’s the case.  On the one hand, they abhor the fact that you felt that women folk as a whole “needed” protecting, and yet they still gush over how HyungSik’s character rushed to take the knife for her (out of love).  Note how they refused to believe that his character would’ve done so for any other “normal” person...but because it’s “love” (by their very narrow definition), it’s to be lauded.  She’s special, so he protects her because he “loves” her, not because she’s a “woman” (gender specific).  To admit that he did so for anything other than “love for her alone” would make her just like anyone else...nobody special.  If they were incensed about the whole gender equality issue, then they should’ve been just as angry with the fact that he (and JiSoo) both even thought it was necessary to run to her aid?  I mean didn’t they just watch her take out all the other thugs just minutes ago?  All they needed to do was to yell, “look behind you” and she probably would’ve easily taken down the knife wielding guy as well?  They fail to recognise that a love that encompasses everyone (even perfect strangers) is a far greater love (self giving) than one that is purely just for that special someone in their lives?

Women are physiologically weaker than men.  It’s a scientific fact.  Facts don’t lie.  Women can’t compete in the same sporting level as men. It’s just a given?  It’s illogical to think that men and women are “equal” in the physical arena.  That in itself should be reason enough for men to be taught to “protect” women and children as a whole because they are weaker?  I feel sad that the world has come to this.  That it is perilous for a man in a sinking ship to shout out, “women and children first” for fear that he would be shouted down and called “misogynistic”.

I find these women hopelessly inconsistent and frustrating.  They are all about women’s rights but in the same breath get slighted if their date doesn’t at least offer to pay the bill.  They want forthrightness but not dominance.  They want their own autonomy but woe betide you if you forget to include them in your life decisions.  It’s inherently selfish.  They run to the “easy out” argument of “gender bias” or “gender equality” when it suits them or when they want to shut down your argument.  It’s irrational and small minded.

So given the circumstances, they were out to pounce on you from the get go.  It’s a sorry state of affairs.  It shuts down interesting discourse altogether.  It could well explain why people have stopped commenting in Soompi through the years.  There is only one monopolistic voice to be heard now, other disparate opinions are unwelcome and shut down (or called “haters”).  So it was bad for you then and I don’t blame you for lurking now rather than commenting anymore in the main threads.  You are probably reflective of many men lurking in Soompi now.  So fearful of saying anything lest they be misconstrued and called “sexist”.  <_<
