However, for me personally, if they kept falling in love across all their manhwa existences, I’m fine with that...like eternal love.

I think this may be where it’s headed.  The 300yo tree, the promise to meet up.  The fact that they forgot about trying to “change” DO’s fate in their hooky date and just enjoyed the moments that they do have together.  It would fit in the rubric that the writer has ultimate say in what happens on the pages of the comic, but instead of trying desperately to change their fates as predetermined by the writer, they can instead opt to love each other regardless of any scenario the writer pens?  They make the most of it whether in stage or shadow.  It means their love will transcend time and circumstance.  So rather than wasting all your emotional energy trying desperately to get what you DON’T HAVE (in DO’s case long life and changing her fate), you could instead use that time cherishing the things you ALREADY DO HAVE (precious time with a loved one - HR).

And I'm so curious why is DS said to DO to not repeat the same mistake like in the past, what mistake, loving HR or changing their fate?

I think because he (Squid) did that himself in TF.  He doesn’t have to do that in Secret because a certain someone hasn’t been written into the Secret plot.  So he can just sit back and watch because he has no reason to want it to change.  But this will all change next week because the object of his desire (or impetus to change the script) will appear.

was surprised about Psychopath Diary . The comedic tone worries me. I was expecting something more serious.

Same... it just doesn’t look right with comedy.  A little bit may be okay because he does try in vain to become one because of the circumstances...but I so wanted him to go full on dark with it.  Especially since he did such good work breaking away from the Flower Boy look in NokDu Flower.   Sigh.

Wow ...i didn’t think it’d be this cheesy

 my thoughts too when I watched that trailer... it would appear that “cheesy” is the flavour of the month/quarter?  So many dramas which I initially thought were straightforward thrillers or rom coms or melos ended up heading down that cheesy path.  I am not a fan... a little is okay but if they overdo it and go too cheesy or slapstick, unless it’s parody like Extraordinary You, I can’t watch.  I can’t watch anything that Jim Carrey is in.

Moreover, Haru's trajectory is towards main lead, with Kyung's toward second, so it's Kyung we might learn something (how to give up love selflessly and gracefully?) about if he were to pattern on Do Hwa.  Maybe?

Yes I like that trajectory - the ultimate in loving another. Giving them up for their better good.  I can see it playing out in TF so that could very well be where Secret is heading to as well. :D

All of this is entirely possible.  He's almost like a virus initially, that attacks the system, and when the system strikes back, he returns as a retrovirus, imitating its host (Kyung) in preparation to taking over from its host.  I'm sure no one wants to take this view of darling Haru, but the similarity is definitely there!

Potentially he is DO’s guardian angel.  That idea was floated a lot with DH.  And seeing HR and DH’s characters intersect, it would make sense. #13 is DO’s guardian angel hovering until she calls, protecting her even when not summoned (the staircase incident when she falls).  I feel like now that we know HR will step into the shoes of DH’s character in Secret, we need to take a look at DH more to get a handle on HR.

EDIT - I think the Tree of Life has appeared in the story

@Jillia I wasn’t talking about HR’s awareness (as defined by the drama) as such above.  More like a character growth?  But yes he was his own individual being from the beginning.  Yes he acted as he pleased because he was pretty much just #13.  And he could act of his own free will and spoke to himself most times.  He didn’t really exist in the Secret world.  Just like angels I guess if we take that analogy.  They make appearances in our world periodically.  But when DO named him, he came into being in the ManHwa world.   It cemented his place in the comic world.  Frankly I don’t like supernatural introductions into dramas, it’s often fraught with potential inconsistencies.  But we’ll see if this is the route the writer has opted for. It kinda all fits...the stained glass windows in the beginning episode.  The fact that he just appears suddenly and the fact that he has no beginning.

Now, I am wondering if Haru is different from the other characters because he doesn't belong to that story initially. It was outlined many times that Haru's beginning is unknown to which Haru replied that he would find his own answer. Since even Jiminchae has no idea about Haru's origin, I have been thinking that Haru might have been from the start the disturbance element in the manhwas. After appearing in Trumpet creeper, he fell in love with DO which somehow ended in a tragedy. That would explain why Haru is the only one who can change the scene on stage as he doesn't belong entirely to the story. Additionally, it would also explain why Haru can remember the "past", scenes from the manhwa "Trumper creeper". Maybe the story is repeating itself, until Haru is able to really fit in the story: he ends up with DO. Maybe the page from the manhwa showing Haru as main character next to DO and BK is the final stage of the story... maybe he started there as an extra as well...

DO willed Haru into existence in Secret.  He wasn’t meant to be there.  She needed a saviour when she realized her plight.  That’s why he was initially faceless (like in the comic), we didn’t see his face till ep4 (?).  She willed him into existence.  She named him.  Initially he was voiceless, he just did as he was told by DO (no will of his own).  The beach scene was the first time he exercised his own will, he chose to disobey her order to save her as she waded into the water.  That’s why he suddenly could speak at the end of that scene.  He found his own voice.  He could change the scene because he was not in the character profiles and therefore outside the writer’s control.   He even changed the stage at the party.  That was significant.  Because in effect, the spotlight was now on BK and DO, not DH and NJ.  His character continued to grow so much that the writer had no choice but to remove Haru1 and draw him in as Haru2.  Now that he was drawn in as an extra (and his face in the character profiles), he could be controlled just like all the other extras.  His memory was wiped as a result.  But DO’s stubborn refusal to forget Haru1 resulted in Haru2’s self awareness.  By penning him as BK’s friend in the reboot, the writer has inadvertently copied the storyline in Trumpet Flower where HR is BK’s faithful servant.  So HR2 now sees in his dreams the memories of TF.  In this episode we see that he’s pushing the envelope even further.  He’s making the 3 of them become leads in Secret now (just like in Trumpet Flower).  Thereby relegating NJ/JD/DH into the extras/supporting character roles.  That’s why suddenly the dynamic in the NJ/JD/DH relationship has changed in this most recent ep.  This whole scenario could’ve been the same in Trumpet Flower, she willed Haru into existence there too?  I don’t know.

Problem I have is that I don’t see a happy ending for the leads in Trumpet Flower.  I see HR sacrificing himself to save DO.  I don’t know if we will see a Romeo Juliet type ending.  My only comfort is the promise they made by that 300year old tree.  That they will always “meet” despite all odds stacked against them.  That they will keep living lifetime after lifetime in different comics hoping one day the writer caves and gives them their happy ever after, which may never happen.  But that’s not the point.  It’s not about their final ending, it’s about their now (the present), making the best of the time they do have regardless.  I quite like that line of thinking.  Because it’s one thing to bemoan our lot in life and wishing to be dealt a better hand, but it takes a great deal of maturity to think beyond the circumstances and live the best life with the hand you’re dealt with regardless.

EDIT - actually I find that death crystalises what’s precious in life.  When you’re faced with the finality of it all, you cling to things that are dear to you.  It gives you added urgency and everything that happens has holds a greater meaning.  You enjoy the sunshine, you enjoy the friendships, you are less likely to be annoyed with trivialities.  That’s why even for the audience, the moments they shared in last night’s episode holds more meaning.  It’s due to the backdrop of death.

does that mean Haru is the second lead who isn't meant to end up with her?! Did I just completely blow apart my own earlier ideas around Trumpet Creeper?

yes he was always second lead. Like DoHwa.  So it’s playing out like Trumpet Creeper.  BK (TC) is the nasty supercilious rich NJ (Secret).  DoHwa is the nice second lead watching from afar...like Haru.  JooDa is supposed to end up with NJ but she likes DoHwa.  Just like DanOh is supposed to like BK but actually likes Haru.  DoHwa faces off with NJ just like Haru faces off with BK.

  9. Ahh...guessed right about recycled characters and their lingering memories.  :)

    Other thoughts to add

    - the dynamic in Kyung’s household.  Possible scenario - his mother is the Queen, if so then he is the Crown Prince (or first wife of a nobleman).  She dies. His father (King) remarries and the second wife has a son (Kyung’s brother).  Kyung is left to fend for himself and feels desperately unappreciated.  Kyung’s brother (second in line) is trying to keep the family together amid Kyung’s acts of rage directed at his father.  Something to that effect.  Kyung is betrothed to DanOh.  Alliance maybe?  He doesn’t exactly love her but just plays along because it’s a marriage of convenience.

    - JooDa is definitely self aware.  I am not sure where she sits in the Flower comic.

    - Squid Fairy is a character that is recycled over and over and each time, he’s the first to become self aware and watches everything unfold.  That’s why he seems so cynical.  He’s probably saying to himself, “same old, same old, nothing changes”.  He probably burnt the book because he doesn’t want any of the others to find out their final ending beforehand.  I feel like it will be tragic.

    - I get the feeling Haru is the one to die.  The pic looks like he’s clasping a sword in his left hand.  The sword looks to be plunged into him (?).  That’s why his face looks stunned.  He has taken the sword meant for someone else (maybe DanOh?  Or Kyung?).  Or is it Kyung who kills Haru?  They seem to be regularly “fighting” in Secret.  The tennis rackets (like swords) with their names on it...ready for battle on court.  Kyung out to kill Haru but Haru betters him.  Kyung has rage enough in him to kill someone.  I don’t think he would mean to, but he has a violent temper.  That’s why Haru keeps telling him to change. I feel like he’s (Haru) set up as some Messianic figure for DanOh... “I will rescue you over and over again”.  Haru looks to be “leaving” Kyung in Flower.  Kyung feels like he “owns” him.  Is Haru Kyung’s hired henchman to do his dirty work and Haru wants to walk away and live a quiet life with DanOh?

    - Secret is still being written/drawn out.  I feel like DanOh and Haru have already rewritten some of the pages (at NamJu’s party).  Hence the writer got rid of Haru1 and rebooted him as Haru2 (named extra) so she could rein him back in line.  Haru2 is the one with flashes of the past comic Flower.  Not DanOh anymore.  Interesting to see how that will play out in tonight’s episode.

I wonder what direction the show's going to take it... whether it's highlighting the writer's lack of creativity, trying to hint at the futility of "fighting" against a storyline, or if it's something else altogether.

I think you can go meta with it.  As in do you believe that you as an individual have a defined storyline to play in the great canvas of life?  That the Writer has absolute control and you just have to play along?  Do you have any choice at all in the matter?  Free will?  Do you even want to change it?  Or do you stand defeated and just accept it as is?  Can you rewrite the story?  Where you’re not just some optional faceless “extra” in the big plot?  You may be “ordinary” in every sense of the word, but you can also become “extra-ordinary”.  :).

  11. The vibe I get is that in Flower, Kyung is a nobleman/prince.  He is betrothed to DanOh (she mentioned she felt like she was a princess when they visited the palace grounds on excursion) - the 10 year betrothal makes sense in Sageuk times.  Makes much less sense in the Secret modern world.  Haru is not lead.  He is the guard (not nobility), he carries a sword.  His scar?  Initially I thought it was a defence wound but it’s an odd place for a slash to occur in battle?  Is it a blood pact?  Like one between brothers?  They used to do that in the old days.  I get the feeling DanOh fell in love with Haru and they made promises via the Trumpet Flower.  I am unsure as to whether their love was doomed from the start.  Was Haru Kyung’s bodyguard or something?  It would fit with the dynamic now in Secret where he’s suddenly Kyung’s best friend. Or maybe blood brothers?  Hence the scar?  Haru is torn between his loyalty to Kyung and his love for DanOh.  I get the feeling they didn’t get their happy ever after in Flower.  DanOh may have drowned...there’s all these references to water so far...

My take on all those who’ve become self aware or look like they have moments (eg Kyung’s brother and NamJoo’s Mother) is that they are all characters in Flower.  They have Dejavu moments in Secret where they see someone or something plays out in front of them and they have faint inklings of their past life in Flower.  The writer of Secret isn’t fantastic - the characters keep lamenting about how cheesy the lines are or how unrealistic the settings are.  He/she may have plagiarized large chunks of the comic Flower (not sure if it was intentional) which is why the scenes look so similar.

Haru’s character in Secret is an exercise of growing self awareness.  DanOh willed him into existence.  From a faceless #13 to a person with a name.  He started off just following her instructions.  He had no voice of his own.  Until the beach scene.  Where she instructed him to come to the sea to help her but he didn’t.  He acted as his own agent.  That’s why at the end of that scene he started to speak. He “found his voice” and DanOh gives him a name (Haru).  He was now capable of acting on his own and deciding what he would do in any given situation.  He became a loose cannon.  Rewriting the story in the birthday party.  The spotlight shifted from the main leads (NamJoo/JooDa) to the extras (Kyung/DanOh) - way too much artistic license for the writer’s comfort.  So he/she got rid of Haru1 and penned Haru2 in as a named extra (like DanOh) whom he/she could now “control”.

There was an article on OSEN yesterday where the production company said they have taken the audience comments to heart, and will be retooling certain storylines, beefing up the romance and mystery, starting with Episode 9 (notice the absence of Dong Ju?).  Guess the public didn't get the memo.

  13. It must be pretty dire for a script rewrite midway based on negative comments for a drama?  Apparently there was an article that came out a few days ago regarding Melting Me Softly.  .  Is this common (Script rewrite)?  I know Undateables (KDrama on SBS) languished at 3-4% or something and the cast held a press con mid way through the drama in hope that the publicity would boost ratings but it didn’t.  It was kinda late by that time.  Once the momentum is lost, it’s hard to regain viewers or attract new ones.

  14. Current theory percolating in my mind

    Spoiler

Flower is a Sageuk comic where Kyung is betrothed (hence the 10 years reference in Secret) to marry DanOh (she’s a Princess? Or someone of noble birth) - their marriage was one of alliance (just like how in Secret it’s the parents who benefit from the marriage).  The black holes are links between the 2 Universes (plot lines).  Haru is Kyung’s guard or servant or someone of lowly birth in Flower.  That’s why he carries a sword?  He falls in love with DanOh.  And she in turn with him.  The other characters in Secret who seem to give us weird vibes (NamJu’s Mother, Kyung’s brother and Squid Fairy) are all characters in Flower as well.  Characters are recycled in comics (they all look the same anyway ).  But once you move to a new comic, you lose your memories but you have Dejavu moments of recognition but because it’s not in context you can’t quite place them.  Like when Squid Fairy sees NamJu’s Mother and has a strange look on his face. And why Kyung’s brother can tell Kyung that DanOh is a nice person.  That’s why when Haru returns a second time, he doesn’t remember anything.  So far scenes in Secret is playing out like Flower.  Squid Fairy is the only one in the Secret Universe who has read Flower in full.  He obviously does not want anyone else to get ideas from it.  Whether it’s Kyung or Haru both who chance upon the book.  I don’t quite trust his character.  I am not quite sure how he fits in so far.  He seems happy to have characters gain self awareness but not so much that they interfere with the main plot line.  He seems to have a lot of background info eg he explains the story board, the stage/shadow settings.  Is he the writer’s alter ego in the Secret Universe?  Like how Stan Lee appears as cameos in the Marvel Universe .  Maybe that’s why Squid Fairy doesn’t want anyone to read Flower.  Secret Writer has plagiarised Flower.

  16. Late to the party.  Sped through all the eps so this is the vibe I am getting.

Currently the scenes between the scenes in Flower and Secret are intersecting. In Flower, DanOh and Haru are the main (?) characters. In Secret, they started off being extras. Haru didn’t even have a name and only DanOh remembers him (from another comic). But inadvertently (?) DanOh named this extra character #13 (I wonder if it’s a play on 13. In the Chinese (Cantonese) when you say 13 with a slight variance tonally it means “always alive”). He ends up being a character in the comic Secret (now even with his own face). I feel like Ep 10 at the party when they are trying to hook JooDa up with DoHwa was when they rewrote all those pages…that’s why the Ep has those comic pages intermittently appearing after each scene plays out. Haru makes the ultimate sacrifice by rescuing her from the swimming pool. And then he disappears. But not before he makes this declaration before Squid Fairy, “I want a different fate for my character too. I don’t want to be an extra that can vanish whenever the writer feels like it. I decided to be the only person who can change someone’s fate. If there’s no answer as to how I came to this world, I will make my own answer.” That to me is the key. He had no beginning. So chances are he will have no end. He resurrected and penned himself back into the story. He became the writer? That would make sense as to why he can draw so well. All ManHwa writers draw well? There was also a weird “glitch” that I noticed when DO was in the hospital (stage) with her dad. He asked her what she wanted and she said, “I wish to get married tomorrow.” Then she gasped and clapped her hands over her mouth as if to say why did I say that? And the scene replayed again, this time she said, “In my next lifetime I want to be your daughter”. That little slip up was strange because it was weird given the context of the setting? She was in hospital, sick and thinking of impending death so the latter statement would’ve made sense not the former? Was that a scene from Flower? Squid Fairy did say in an earlier episode that the only way an extra could escape their fate was if they became a main character? Something to that effect. Haru is attempting to do just that I think.  It would be nice if we knew what parts DanOh and Haru played in Flower.  I think DanOh may have been a princess - she mentioned that when they were on the school excursion to sightsee and where they found the old keychain/tasseled trinket.  Why was it buried there?  Was it because Haru and DO were lovers in the comic Flower but they didn’t get their happy ever after because of Kyung?  A bit like NamJu/DoHwa and JooDa?

This scene in the book Flower (Is the guy in the pic Haru?  Or is it Kyung?  I don’t recall Haru having the long hair locks down the sides of his face?  In the scene where she falls and he catches her with his back).
