Korean actress Bae Doo Na (29) was late for a movie PR event in Tokyo yesterday. Her excuse? Her flight from New York was delayed by a volcanic eruption in Russia's Kuril Islands. Bae finally arrived about three hours into the screening and post production press conference for Koreeda Hirokazu's "Kuuki Ningyou" (Air Doll). The movie, shown recently in the Un Certain Regard category at Cannes, is an adaptation of Goda Yoshiie's manga about an inflatable doll (Bae) that becomes sentient.

Bae Doona, Kim JungEun, Lee MinKi and Park HanByul all made contributions to their almamater Konkuk University to help build a new library for its College of Art & Design. The university released the info in order to encourage students to draw caricatures of the donors; those chosen will then decorate the walls of the lib.

Bae Doona is rumored to be cast in 공부의 신 (Master/Lord/God of Studying), a drama based on the manga ドラゴン桜 (Dragon Zakura) (which was already adapted into a 2005 Jdorama). [via Asia Economic Daily]

Too bad Cha SeungWon has reportedly turned down the lead role (he'll be busy doing the war movie "Into the Gunfire" instead), he's like the perfect Korean Abe Hiroshi. This drama was originally slated for 2008 and starring Park YeJin and Lee HongKi, but production was cancelled after they ran into copyright issues. Looks like those have been ironed out (along with the change of broadcasting station from SBS to KBS).

My reaction? Ehhhh. Haven't seen "Dragon Zakura", but my friend (whose taste I trust) says it's just one of those mediocre high school-based idol dramas Japan churns out every year.

I wish Doona would choose better dramas, sigh.
