Korean Box Office Enters the New Year

The Korean box office closed the book on another troubled pandemic year filled with mixed returns as the country grappled with different waves of COVID infections and varying levels of social distancing restrictions. Yet despite COVID cases hitting new peaks toward the end of the year, theaters drummed up a strong business in December, largely thanks to the biggest hit of the pandemic to date.

2022 begins with some of that momentum still intact, as 1.1 million tickets were sold over the New Year’s Day weekend. A new domestic release pushed up the local market share significantly, but it still remained stubbornly low at 11%.

Swinging into first place for the third time running was the pandemic smash Spider-Man: No Way Home. Down just 46%, the comic book tentpole added another 706,000 viewers (USD 6.08 million), to push its total to a stellar 6.07 million admissions (USD 51.29 million), far and away from the best total of 2021 and the whole pandemic era to date.

Still in second place after a strong 27% hold was the spy action prequel The King’s Man. The film secured another 209,000 entries (USD 1.8 million) over the weekend, lifting its haul to 776,000 sales (USD 6.51 million) over its first 12 days.

Debuting in third place was the star-studded local romantic omnibus A YEAR-END MEDLEY. The film debuted with 114,000 spectators (USD 948,000) over the weekend and filled 186,000 seats (USD 1.49 million) over its first five days. Though not a particularly large number, the film was always designed to be an original feature for the streaming services TVING, where it debuted day and date, giving viewers the option to watch it at home or in theaters.

The sci-fi sequel The Matrix: Resurrections continued to struggle at the Korean box office after experiencing a hefty 82% fall. The weekend saw it add 18,000 viewers (USD 148,000) to its total, which has now reached 203,000 entries (USD 1.71 million).

Still, a presence on the charts was the Disney animation Encanto, which slid 56% and one spot. Adding 9,000 sales (USD 70,000) over the weekend, the film has amassed 627,000 admissions (USD 5 million).

The first box office battle of the year will see Spider-Man attempt to retain its crown for a fourth straight weekend, as it goes up against two new releases - the crime drama The Policeman’s Lineage, the first Korean release of the year, and the animated sequel Sing 2.

7 Newer K-Dramas Worth Checking Out This Winter Season

The winter season usually means a lot of indoor time snuggling in between the warm covers and binge-watching a lot of K-dramas. There have been a fair share of K-dramas that have started airing or have completed recently that are worth checking out. If you’re looking for some recommendations on some solid scripts, great acting, and maybe even some eye candy, these ones can’t be missed! Here are seven titles to check out.

Disclaimer: Feature focuses on more recent releases.

1. “Bad And Crazy”

bad-and-crazy2.jpeg

Directed by Yoo Sun Bong and written by Kim Sae Bom, who worked together on “The Uncanny Counter,” “Bad and Crazy” is a redemption K-drama. Ryu Soo Yeol (Lee Dong Wook) plays a police officer who often teeters from doing the right thing and losing his temper. He then meets K (Wi Ha Joon), a crazy guy, who is all about wanting to find justice.

You really don’t need any other reason to watch this series other than the fact that Lee Dong Wook and Wi Ha Joon are starring in it. But if you’re looking for some other reasons, the series has got elements of everything – it’s funny, action-packed, has a love story, and there’s lots of crime/mystery that will have you intrigued until the end. You also can’t go wrong with the same team that brought the hit series “The Uncanny Counter.”

Here are 10 short K-Dramas, with 12 episodes or less, that you can binge watch over the weekend!

Dear Oppa: Lee Dong-Wook’s fan raves about Tale of the Nine Tailed; Says she’s ‘mesmerized’

dear_oppa_lee_dong-wook_.jpg?width=752&f

Over the past few weeks, some heartwarming, sweet and touching letters have made their way to our inbox from all over the world. From letters for Im Siwan, Start-Up star Kim Seon Ho to letters to pop band NCT, EXO, TXT and so many more, our inbox has been full of love and admiration. Now we’ve received a letter for the multi-talented South Korean actor Lee Dong-Wook. A fan named Ronetta Ingabire has reached out to the star via our Dear Oppa segment.

Read her letter below:

Dear Lee Dong-Wook,

Whewww! Where do I even start?? This man! This man! Eish!!!!! The first time I ever saw Lee on the screen was in Goblin.

I was totally mesmerized by his character 'grim reaper' and how superbly he perfected the character. This interest in his acting led me to watch more of his work and currently I am watching 'tale of the nine tailed'. And let me tell youuuuu, I am not dissappointedd!! He takes us to a different dimension with his charismatic, dramatic, emotional (and visual) acting. He fully embodies whichever character he plays that every viewer who watches it is fully engrossed with the plot of the story. I cannot fully begin to express how deeply proud I am of this manzz. Lee Dong-Wook, thank you for sharing your passion with this world. It resonates with many viewers, such as I. Can't wait to see more of your work!

PS. I love you.

*** We know that Chanel tapped on LDW to endorse its first makeup collection for men — Boy de Chanel — in 2019 as the brand’s global ambassador. I remember this because do you know guys that since last year Koreans are only allowed to buy one Chanel bag per year? The brand has started restricting the number of bags each customer can buy in Korea. But, this is only in the case of some popular bags. According to the Hankook Ilbo, Chanel Korea has adopted a new policy in which each customer can buy one Timeless Classic flap bag and one Coco Handle handbag per year.  The “one bag per person per year” rule also applies to items that it categorizes as “small leather goods”, mainly wallets and pouches, if the customer wants more than one of the same model in the category. The measure comes following increasing “reselling” of Chanel bags.  At major department stores in Seoul where Chanel stores are located, people have been seen standing in line starting in the early morning to do “open runs”, or dashing into the store as soon as it opens. Some of them seem to be reselling the bags at higher prices elsewhere. Chanel has raised its prices frequently in Korea – but consumers don’t seem to care. Market analysts say that the pandemic seems to have added to the thirst for luxury goods as people’s desires for overseas travel can’t be satisfied. Chanel is not the only luxury brand restricting per capita purchases. Hermès allows each customer to buy only up to two bags of the same design per year. Rolex also restricts per capita purchases to one or two watches each year.

***  On December 29, 2021, is a new collaboration between theaters & OTT platforms. "A YEAR-END MEDLEY," has  chosen to unwind from theaters and on TVing, an OTT platform, at the same time. The movie, which started at the top of the box office among Korean films released on the same day, began screening on up to 832 theaters in the first week of its release, ranking fifth in the box office according to the KOREA Box-office Information System (KOBIS)"A YEAR-END MEDLEY"  released simultaneously on the OTT platform TVing on the same day as the theater, topped the TVing movie rank on the day of its release. It sets a record for the ‘best box office hit of all time’ among TVing original movies. Based on these achievements, "A YEAR-END MEDLEY"  plans to release the extended version with 6 episodes during the Lunar New Year holiday at the end of January 2022 through Tving. The 138-minute film, which depicts 14 people who visit Hotel Emros with their own ‘love story,’ in an omnibus format, isn’t long enough to complete the whole story. So, to contain the rest of the stories untold in the film, the new version will be expanded into a series with ‘six parts.’ The six-part extended version is known to be 60 minutes longer than the original movie. It should be noted that it is the first experiment to produce a movie and a ‘series’ at the same time as well as simultaneous screening at theaters and on OTT.

we’re only going this far because it’s for tv

So says Lee Dong Wook of his sexy kissing scene with Han Ji Eun in the BTS clip of Bad And Crazy. They would have done more if they could… Ha. Love how he says that in such a matter-of-fact tone. While he isn’t on my fave actors list, I do find his extremely funny and witty off-screen. Han Ji Eun looks so tiny when they are embracing each other.

*** Time flies so fast that as "Bad and Crazy" moves into its closing episodes actress Kim Sun-hwa-I has been confirmed for a minor but noteworthy special appearance. She plays Doctor Hong, a specialist who is to assist in the recovery of Inspector Ryoo, the character played by LDW. Her most recent drama was in "Do You Like Brahms?" on 2020.  :ohboy2:
