When a loving mother is stricken by unfathomable grief, she finds herself pushed to the brink with her world crumbling around her. Poignant and atmospheric, Wonderful World portrays an emotionally-charged tale with sympathetic characters, leaving subtle threads of mystery that will be woven together in due time.

 
EPISODES 1-2

 

Our story opens in medias res on a snowy day, with KWON SEON-YUL (Cha Eun-woo) behind the wheel, and a stricken EUN SOO-HYUN (Kim Nam-joo) standing in the car’s path. Vignettes of their memories together flash by, yet in spite of those wistful days, Seon-yul steps on the accelerator, his expression hard. We hear a crash, though we don’t witness it, and Soo-hyun narrates, “Everything started with the incident that summer.”

We rewind back in time to Soo-hyun’s blissful days, when she’s enjoying a career high with her best friend and manager HAN YOO-RI (Im Se-mi) by her side. At home, Soo-hyun is showered with love by her devoted husband KANG SOO-HO (Kim Kang-woo) and their precious son Geon-woo, who’d come to them like a blessing after four miscarriages.

 

Unfortunately, Soo-hyun’s happiness doesn’t last. When Geon-woo comes down with a fever, Soo-hyun cancels her schedules and rushes home in a panic, since Soo-ho isn’t picking up her calls. To her relief, she finds Geon-woo all recovered, but she accidentally catches Soo-ho taking his anxiety meds. It turns out he’s been relying on them ever since quitting his job, when his journalistic ethics had pushed him towards whistleblowing and away from his unsupportive colleagues.

In the meantime, Geon-woo slips out of the house, and by the time Soo-hyun finally finds him that night, he’s become the victim of a hit-and-run. Geon-woo remains in critical condition even after his surgery, and eventually, he flatlines as Soo-hyun is holding his hand. To avoid being caught, the driver had fled with the injured Geon-woo and abandoned him elsewhere, and that delay is what ended up killing him.

Mired in guilt and grief, Soo-hyun is dealt a second blow when the driver is declared not guilty. He’s handed a suspended sentence, which essentially lets him off scot-free, but while Soo-ho rails against the verdict, Soo-hyun’s expression remains stony.

Outside, Soo-hyun approaches the driver with Geon-woo’s funeral photo and asks him to apologize to her son. Instead, the awful man sneers at her, blaming Geon-woo for running into his car and ruining his business deals. His utter lack of remorse angers Soo-hyun, and her sorrowful tears dry up into a steely glare. Getting behind the wheel, Soo-hyun steps down hard on the accelerator, punishing the assailant in the exact same way he killed her son.

Gone is the affable and assured Soo-hyun of before; in her place is a dazed and detached mother who cannot see beyond the loss of her son. To her loved ones’ dismay, Soo-hyun refuses leniency, resulting in a sentence of seven years. In prison, she withdraws even further into herself, refusing all of Soo-ho’s visitations. Soo-hyun is so dissociated that she barely reacts when she works a sewing machine’s needle right into her own hand, almost as if she’s deliberately punishing herself. As she’s rushed to hospital, her gurney coincidentally passes by Seon-yul, who just so happens to be volunteering at the prison choir that day.

 

All this while, Soo-ho has been investigating Geon-woo’s case with a relentless, single-minded focus. He’s traced the driver’s light sentencing to his powerful backer KIM JOON (Park Hyuk-kwon), who just so happens to be the corrupt politician Soo-ho had once tried to expose. Furthermore, he’s also discovered that the driver is deeply involved in Joon’s construction corruption and money laundering, and he takes that information to a direct confrontation in Joon’s office.

Joon may have risen even further up the ranks over the years, but Soo-ho isn’t the least bit cowed by Joon’s threats — at this point, Joon stands to lose everything, while he has nothing left to lose. That is, until Joon shows him footage of their front gate, purportedly from the day of the accident. “You ought to know best how to protect your wife,” Joon warns, leaving Soo-ho with a troubled expression.

Previously, Eun Soo Hyun personally punished the assailant who killed her young son. While Soo Hyun was in prison, she refused to see her husband Soo Ho (Kim Kang Woo) and announced separation with him, whose success was guaranteed as he received an offer to work as a foreign correspondent. After seven years in prison, Soo Hyun was released and visited her son’s grave.

The newly released stills capture the heartbreaking reunion between Soo Hyun and Soo Ho. Soo Hyun and Soo Ho look at each other with eyes full of tears, creating a heartbreaking moment.

Soo Ho hugs Soo Hyun tightly as if he will never let her go again. Viewers are eager to find out whether Soo Hyun, who chose a harsh breakup for Soo Ho’s sake, will change her mind and choose to reunite and whether the couple who went through a painful time will regain happiness.

Just for the record, "afro wigs" worn by non-Black individuals is racially insensitive. The scene of Eun Soo, her sister, and her son wearing afro wigs singing to "I will survive" in Episode 3 may be a charming family activity, but racial insensitivity should be monitored more by production and direction staff, particularly as the show is streaming to global audiences.

Wonderful World: Episodes 3-4

This is a week of revelations, with two significant discoveries by our heroine: one forms the basis for a new connection, while the other threatens the deepest bond she shares. Her readjustment to life outside prison is no easy task, made worse by a shocking secret coming to the fore.

EPISODES 3-4

 

Before the turmoil of the present-day plot begins, the show takes time to reestablish our heroine’s support system. Soo-hyun’s first destination upon her release from prison is a tearful reunion with her mother, and it’s reassuring to know that she has a loving home to return to, even as she ventures out to fulfill her friend’s last wish.

Tracking down the boy from the fire all those years ago, Soo-hyun soon finds that her investigations lead her to a very familiar face. As per the laws of dramaland, our tragically orphaned boy is Seon-yul, whom Soo-hyun approaches at the junkyard. They immediately recognize each other from their graveyard encounter, though they don’t speak much on it.

Seon-yul’s not in the best of moods, having gotten injured while obtaining photographic evidence of a politician’s tryst, and it only sours further when Soo-hyun conveys Hyung-ja’s last wish. Bitterly declaring that an apology can’t change reality, Seon-yul rebuffs Hyung-ja’s remorse.

 

In the days that follow, Seon-yul continuously snubs Soo-hyun’s attempts to have another conversation with him. That is, until he’s tangentially involved in an accident and loses his mother’s necklace in a pond. Before he can find it, the police officers insist that he follow them to the station to give a statement, so Soo-hyun gets herself muddy retrieving it for him. She understands his pain all too well, and it’s only when she opens up about the loss of her child and apologizes for reminding him of his past that Seon-yul finally begins to see her in a new light.

Despite the plot convenience of the necklace incident, I liked that it got straight to the hearts of our leads while wrapping up fairly quickly. At their core, Soo-hyun is someone who hurts deeply while wishing to protect others from that same pain, and Seon-yul is someone who suppresses his pain in order to live, while also holding fast to that pain deep down. It’s Soo-hyun’s sincere empathy that ultimately gets past Seon-yul’s defenses, allowing our first revelation to wrap up on a hopeful note when Seon-yul reaches out and asks for Hyung-ja’s diary.

 

For the second revelation, our focus shifts away from Soo-hyun and towards her spouse. In the years since Soo-hyun’s imprisonment, Soo-ho has been steadily rising through the ranks and receiving journalism awards. Still, his heart doesn’t seem to have wavered one bit. When Soo-hyun runs into him in front of her mother’s house, Soo-ho tries to reach out to her, even though she’d served him divorce papers while in prison.

Soo-hyun remains resolute about pushing Soo-ho away, for his own sake, but he sees through her self-sacrificing act and pulls her into a hug. He can’t bear to let her go; she’s much too precious to him. With that, Soo-hyun can no longer keep up her facade, and later on, Soo-ho sweetly proposes to her once again, promising to always walk by her side.

Due to this, Sun Yool leads a rough and dangerous life while trying to attain evidence of politicians’ money laundering, racing on a motorcycle on the road, and getting into physical fights.

Wonderful World Episode 5 Trailer: Cha Eun-Woo Gets Involved in Kim Nam-Joo’s Life

MBC recently shared the Wonderful World episode 5 trailer, starring Kim Nam-Joo as Eun Soo-Hyun and Cha Eun-Woo as Kwon Seon-Yul. The suspense-thriller K-drama revolves around two people getting involved in each other’s lives due to their respective past incidents.

In episode 4, Soo-Hyun seems troubled after an anonymous person sent her an envelope. In it, she finds a photo of her husband with another woman. While she forgives him, thinking it had happened when they were broken up, the episode’s ending raises suspicion. Meanwhile, Seon-Yul finds comfort in Soo-Hyun’s company and somehow ends up investigating the person who sent her the envelope.

 

In the upcoming episode 5 trailer, Seon-Yul will encounter the anonymous man. It appears Soo-Hyun will seek his help to track down the sender of the photo.

 

The Wonderful World episode 5 trailer begins with Kim Nam-Joo’s Soo-Hyun looking devastated. She tells her husband, Soo-Ho (Kim Kang-Woo), “I know who you’re with right now.” For context, episode 4 ended with her witnessing Soo-Ho entering a hotel room. The receiver was her friendly neighbor.

 

The video further shows Cha Eun-Woo’s Seon-Yul getting involved in a cat-and-mouse chase. When Soo-Hyun and Seon-Yul meet, the former seems concerned about his wounds. In a comforting tone, he tells her, “Things like this don’t hurt at all.” This scene hints at Soo-Hyun seeking his help to investigate the sender of the envelope.

On the other hand, Soo-Ho deals with a political battle with Kim Joon (Park Hyuk-Kwon). Later, Nam-Joo’s character, Soo-Hyun, meets with a woman who adds curiosity to Soo-Hyun’s storyline. Apparently, Soo-Hyun’s investigation to find the anonymous sender leads her to this woman.

 

The ending of the Wonderful World episode 5 trailer features Seon-Yul rescuing Kwon Min-Hyeok (Lim Ji-Sub). Previously, it has been revealed that he is the sender of the envelope and also the son of the person Soo-Hyun had killed. Soon, viewers will discover if Seon-Yul’s involvement in Soo-Hyun’s life will connect him to her painful past.

 

Wonderful World episode 4 recap: Did Kim Nam-Joo’s husband cheat on her?

 

Wonderful World episode 4 aired on Saturday, March 9, 2024, on MBC and Disney Plus. In it, heartbroken Soo-Hyun (Kim Nam-Joo) tries to come to terms with the complicated situation she is in. Earlier, she received an envelope from an unknown sender with a photo of her husband with another woman. 

Soo-Hyun thinks he is cheating on her but soon realizes the date in the photo. It was during the time she ended her relationship with him in prison. Although she is devastated, she decides to forgive him and move on. He also apologizes for being reckless in the past and assures her that he only loves her.

 

Meanwhile, Soo-Hyun visits a police station to bail out Cha Eun-Woo’s Seon-Yul and marks her as his guardian. Her gesture warms his heart, and he decides to befriend her. In episode 4, Seon-Yul seems to be busy investigating the anonymous sender for Soo-Hyun.

On the other hand, Soo-Hyun crosses paths with her neighbor, Hye-Geum. The latter also has a son who used to play with Soo-Hyun’s late son. Hence, Hye-Geum approaches and says a few comforting words. When Soo-Hyun leaves the neighbor’s house, she looks happy. But her world turns upside down when she sees her husband, Soo-Ho, entering a hotel room, where Hye-Geum receives him at the door. Is he truly cheating on Soo-Hyun?
