최근 드라마에는 시청자들의 '볼거리' 욕구를 충족시켜주고, 주인공들의 심리를 좀 더 재미있고 공감되도록 표현하기 위해 CG등을 통한 다양한 방법이 시도되고 있다.

그리고 이러한 추세를 가장 잘 보여주고 있는 드라마가 있으니, 이는 솔직담백하게 서른셋 노처녀의 심리를 표현하면서 인기리에 방송중인 수목드라마 <달자의 봄>이다.

대한민국에서 30대 솔로 여성으로 살아가기!

겉보기엔 위풍당당하지만, 알고 보면 더없이 쓸쓸하고 고된 30대 노처녀 ‘달자’의 심리를 좀 더 섬세하게, 좀 더 재미있게 표현하기 위해 드라마에 상상과 패러디의 등장은 기본. 이에 더해 매 회 부제에 딱 맞는 환상적인 일러스트가 등장한다.

바쁜 작업현장에서 값진 시간을 내어준, <달자의 봄> 일러스트 작가 이경아님을 만나보자.

■ 지금까지 활동, 간단한 약력 소개

이경아 : 95년부터 본격적으로 트랜드 북과 잡지에서 패션일러스트레이터로 활동하기 시작했고, 대학원 졸업 후 99년부터 패션디자인과에서 패션일러스트 과목을 강의하기 시작했다. 최근에는 경희대 겸임교수, 한양대 강사로 활동 중..

■ 패션일러스트라는 일은 아직 다소 생소하다. 구체적으로 하는 일에 대한 소개

이경아 : 패션일러스트의 가장 일차적인 목적은 의상디자인을 구상하는 단계에서 구상한 아이디어를 표현하고 제시하는 그림이다. 더 나아가서는 패션정보나 이미지를 제시하고, 패션 문화를 담는다. 패션일러스트는 당시 유행하는 패션, 의상 뿐 아니라 배경 상황 등을 묘사하고, 패션지, 광고, 브랜드 카달로그, 백화점 등에서 일을 하는데 최근에는 모든 분야에서 패션이 중요해지면서 다양한 분야에서 일을 한다.

■ 이 분야로 진출하게 된 계기는?

이경아 : 일단 어릴 때부터 그림 그리는 걸 좋아했다. 그러나 미술학원을 가끔 다니는 것 말고 정식으로 미술공부를 한 적이 없어 아쉽기는 하다. 관련 분야로 전공(의상디자인) 선택해서, 패션일러스트 과목 들으며 그 매력에 빠져 이 분야로 가야겠다는 생각을 하게 됐다.

...방송하는 날 빼고 일주일 꼬박 달자에 매달려...

'달자'의 생각에 대부분 공감, <달자의 봄> 작업 너무 즐거워!

■ 일러스트 보는 재미로 달자를 챙겨서 본다는 팬들도 있다. 이런 반응에 대한 소감

이경아 : 감사하다. 처음에는 드라마 이미지에 맞지 않으면 어쩌나 하는 걱정도 했는데, (시청자들의) 이런 반응 보면 더 잘해야겠다는 부담도 생긴다. 또 매너리즘에 빠지지 않아야겠다는 자극이 된다.

■ <달자의 봄> 작업을 하게 된 계기가 궁금하다.

이경아 : 다른 드라마와 차별화하겠다는 이재상 감독님의 기획의도로 작업을 하게 됐다. 드라마 이미지에 맞는 일러스트레이터를 찾다가 ‘일러스트’ 잡지사의 소개로 내 개인전 그림을 접하게 되셨다. 세련되고 도회적이면서 환상적인 이미지의 일러스트를 찾았는데, 내 그림이 ‘달자’라는 이미지에 잘 맞아서 선택이 된 것 같다.

■ 달자의 봄 일러스트를 그리는 과정을 알고 싶다 (기획회의, 구상, 작업, 소요시간 등)

이경아 : 드라마를 시작하기 몇 달 전에 감독님과 처음 만나서 일러스트의 방향에 대해 충분히 얘기를 했다. 그리고 본격적인 작업 들어가기 전 주요 인물 5명의 캐릭터 작업을 먼저 했다. 시청자들이 그림을 보고 등장인물과 매치시킬 수 있어야 했기에, 배우 직접 만나고 코디네이터 만나서 의상 헤어스타일 진행에 대해 대화하면서 연구했다.

처음에는 감독님과 아이디어 상의를 했는데, 요즘엔 대본을 꼼꼼히 읽으면서 부제와 드라마 전체 내용 중 초점을 맞춰야 하는 부분을 구상하고 필요한 이미지 자료를 조사한다.

구상에는 하루 정도의 시간이 소요되고, 스케치부터 칼라링까지 꼬박 하루종일 걸린다.

무엇보다 일러스트가 자연스럽게 채색되는 느낌을 보여주기 위해 칼라링 과정 중간 중간 단계별로 스캔을 받아서 작업하기에 작업시간이 좀 더 많이 소요된다. 그리고 마음에 안 들면서 다시 그리기 때문에 하루가 더 소요될 때도 있다.

■ 수정을 해야 할 때도 있는가?

이경아 : 칼라링까지 마치고 다시 수정한 적이 많다. 부분적인 수정이지만, 수작업이다 보니 똑같은 걸 처음부터 다시 그려야 한다. 그러나 드라마 전체 기획의도 안에서 일러스트는 한 부분이기 때문에 수정은 당연한 것이라고 생각한다. 그림의 스타일을 바꾸는 것이 아니니까.

■ ‘독특하고 신비롭다 VS 무표정하거나 다소 우울해보인다’는 반응.

(달자의 봄 일러스트)의 컨셉을 설명해준다면?

이경아 : 원래 무표정하고 우울해하는 표정의 그림 스타일을 좋아한다. 그리고 ‘달자' 캐릭터가 당당하고 활발하지만 내면에 삶의 무게를 가지고 있기에 환하게 웃고 있는 것을 그리고 싶지 않았다. 때문에 일부러 표정을 주지 않았다.

그리고 부제와 드라마 내용을 한 컷에 담아야 하기 때문에 그 회에서 주로 등장되는 인물을 구체적으로 묘사하고, 내용을 담아낼 수 있는 상징적인 이미지를 넣으려고 애쓴다.

■ '달자의 봄' 한 회를 그리기 위해 며칠을 쏟는 것으로 알고 있다. 지칠 것도 같은데...?

이경아 : 일주일에 두 컷씩 작업을 하는데, <달자의 봄>을 방영하는 수목요일만 빼고 달자의 봄에 매달려 있다. 그러나 작업이 너무 즐겁기 때문에 지치진 않고, 오히려 이 일 끝나면 오히려 공허해질 것 같다. 현재는 너무 즐거워서 다른 무언가를 하고 싶다는 생각 없이, 오히려 개인전 준비해볼까하는 의욕이 생긴다.

■ <달자의 봄>회사 내부에 걸린 일러스트는 개인전 작품.(부제 : 몸.옷 변주되는 의상)

이경아 : 대부분 인체 위에 의상을 입혀서 그려내는 그림이기 때문에 그리는 사람이 인체를 어떻게 묘사하느냐에 따라 옷의 느낌이 달라진다. 그래서 패션일러스트에서 인체와 의상은 떨어질 수 없는 관계라는 생각에 작업을 시작했다. 결국 의상은 인체의 표현에 의해, 또한 인체는 의상에 의해 변주된다는 걸 보여주고 싶었다.

■ 작업하면서 가장 보람을 느낄 때

이경아 : 사람들이 내 그림을 좋아할 때! 처음 그림을 하고 싶다 했을 때는 많은 사람들이 내 그림을 좋아해주지 않아도 단지 몇 사람이라도 정말 내 그림을 좋아하면 충분히 만족할 수 있겠다고 생각했다. 그래서 지금은 충분히 만족하고 보람 느낀다. 그리고 부모님이 좋아해 주실 때 가장 큰 보람을 느낀다. 엄마가 내 그림의 가장 큰 팬.

■ <달자의 봄>은 30대 미혼여성의 일과 사랑을 그려내는 드라마이다. 공감되는 부분이 있는가?

이경아 : 처음 시놉시스를 받고 ‘감독님이 나를 타깃으로 한건가?’ 싶었다. (웃음) 그 정도로 공감하고, ‘이거 정말 내 얘기네’ 싶은 부분이 많다. 달자의 모습은 그대로 ‘현실’이다. 여성들의 사회 진출이 늘어나고 의식 등이 많이 바뀌었는데, 결혼 제도가 보수적인 부분이 많기 때문에 노처녀들이 많아지는 게 아닐까. 일명 골.드.미.스!

■ 앞으로의 계획

이경아 : 패션 일러스트 책을 내고 싶고, 아트 상품에 내 그림을 넣고 싶다. 그리고 패션일러스트가 패션일러스트로 끝나는 것이 아니라 좀더 시대정신과 문화를 담고 있는 그림이라는 인식을 가지도록 노력할 것이다. 단체전을 2건 정도 준비중이며 <달자의 봄>을 하면서 개인 작품전 하고 싶다는 욕심이 생겼다.

일에는 더할나위 없는 프로!

그러나 창의적인 작업을 해서일까. 때론 수줍게, 때론 긴장하며 인터뷰에 응한 이경아 작가는 달자를 공감하는 만큼, 달자의 순수함을 닮아 있었다.

BTW, I was rewatching some of the old episodes and found a number of things that I couldn't get off my mind...

-From about episode 8, you can notice that TB is a lot less animated in the way he talks and looks at people. From about episode 10, TB hardly ever moves his head, looks up or down, or changes facial expression while talking. I kind of miss the old goofy and free-spirited TB. Compare the scene where TB picks up DJ's phone and pretends to DJ's grandma that he can't hear her anymore with the scene where TB tells DJ she's pretty. Also compare TB's expressions when he sees her in the street in eps. 1-8 with those in eps. 9-12. He looks uneasy. Is this LMK's way of portraying TB as more serious and mature character than we think of him at first? Is LMK settling into a more subdued, understated TB? Is LMK feeling less carefree/more self-conscious these days?

-Is there significance to the men in DJ's family dying early other than the men conveniently being gone?

-Since TB's grandpa is a former loan shark, does that mean he is some sort of gangster? If so, how does that not affect TB's father's reputation as a university dean?

-How did TB stay friends with the guy who runs the clothing store when for many years TB lived the "straight" path associating with elites?

TB's grandpa is not really a loan shark....he tells Dalja that he was being chased because he owes money to loan shark...that's not really the case at all, isn't it? I suspect grandpa is not a loan shark at all....maybe he owns the legal firm that TB was working in? Because grandpa asks TB to "work" for him for a few years, can't be he asks him to be a loan shark too, isn't it, after all TB is a highly qualified lawyer....

TB's friend...maybe he met that guy after he quits his job as a lawyer...I assume he came away from his job and his family not having much money and he met this guy, this guy helped him in some way and so they started off being friends...just a guess, anyway the last few episodes this friend didn't appear at all....

TB's ring is probably a fashiion thing....just like the one that Bae Yong Jun was wearing in his little finger in "winter sonata"...

I think it's a couple of different reasons. First of all, as you've stated, Min-ki is trying to show a more mature, more subdued Tae-bong (and you have to admit, the situations he's been in recently sort of call for it). Secondly, I think Min-ki is falling deeper into his character, and showing better, more subtle acting. I've noticed this usually happens in K-dramas (well, the ones with good actors, anyway...). The actors become more subtle in their portrayals of their characters, because they no longer need the big facial expressions and gestures to get their point across, and to get a "feel" for their characters. It's a very good thing, IMHO.

i think TB's grandpa has "converted" his biz to something more 'legal' now and having his daughter marry a university dean has certainly given more credibility to his biz. i also think TB's dad had his own reasons why he married into the family although nothing's been revealed so far (maybe he needed finances then?)

First of all, i also was rewatching some epis over the weekend and i did notice the change of TB's expressions. I think that Minki's way of having TB be a more subdued character fits his chracter and it shows a different side of TB. I think though TB's character is one that is more unsure or uneasy with this new adjustment being in this certain point of his life in which he has to choose/decide many things for the future . I agree with Dahee Fanel, that Minki is showing good acting in his character by beign more subtle. My thoughts on the matter.

About the friend, i think that friend played a role i think that also help change TB's character. Maybe he was a person who was willing to help TB when he was starting out on this new path and he lent a helping hand so to speak that's how the friendship bossomed. TB saw a new kind of life from this friend, a lifestyle he grew accustomed too it seems.

Yeah, i think its a fashion statement or maybe it has another meaning where TB where's the ring? I dont know eveyone has their own reasons to do that sometimes.

Poor Dalja has never had a romantic V-Day. As it always is with Dalja, what awaits her on V-Day is not chocolate but some problem to take care of. DJ's homeshopping company planned to sell V-Day chocolates, but because of a problem at the factory, DJ has to go to the factory to make the chocolate herself. Taebong who doesn't know about this comes home with a cake with plans for a romantic V-Day. Meanwhile, Gijoong has mastered "Candy" and is improving himself by acting like Terius(?), a character in the comic. We'll have to see how DJ reacts to all of this...

I would vote for romance all the way! Well..most especially in DJ and TB's case. They're both highly smart and successful people. They can take care of themselves in reality in terms of career and financials. If it wasnt so, then it might be a different matter.

Man..this whole poll thing is reminiscent of Hana Yori Dango. Especially it coming from KBS.

If any of you are aware of this before, but for the manga, the mangaka did a poll after some chapters for the readers to decide who Makino should end up with.

Her first intention was for Makino to end up with Hanazawa Rui, but since most of readers voted for Tsukasa, she decided to write Makino and Tsukasa to be the couple.

So...this poll might be important? There's like 10 more episodes to go. So many things can happen in between. I am for DJ and TB all the way. They just belong together. The red string couple. Hehehe.
