[PICK] Korean Movie with Iconic Action Scenes

Action is one of the highlights that add to the fun of a movie. For instance, fight scenes, dynamic gun-shootings, thrilling car chasings, and combats at an overwhelming scale please the audience’s eyes. Even though action sequences in Korean movies can’t be compared to those of Hollywood, they create impressive stunts with various attempts and unique charms of characters. Old Boy, The City of Violence, and The Man from Nowhere are considered the top works of all time with their impressive action sequences. Now, what other films will follow suit? I’ve looked into some of the latest movies that came out in earnest.

Deliver Us from Evil (2020)
BA31A26B-5AEE-4927-AC43-E34276D8472A.jpg

Credit: CJ Entertainment

New World‘s Hwang Jung Min and Lee Jung Jae reunited. This time, they play a desperate assassin who has lost his enthusiasm for life and a ruthless pursuer obsessed with revenge. But Deliver Us from Evil captures the pursuit of two men in a stylish action with quick blows. In particular, it utilizes a stop-motion technique to vividly embody the bloody confrontation between the two characters, maximizing the pleasure of the genre. Among many sequences, the first encounter between In Nam and Ray, which finally happens in the midway of the film, is intense. The sequence of two men clashing from a narrow hallway to a room and over an iron bar is full of excitement that makes the whole body shake. The scene is also full of tension as if they are two beasts confronting each other head-on.

Asura: The City of Madness (2016)
85A5C7AF-98F5-4D2A-9885-9D8007C14DDD.jpg

Credit: CJ Entertainment

This film relentlessly depicts the spheres of Hell reeking with blood. There is no confrontation between good and evil, but there are the lesser evil and the worst. Asura follows a detective who becomes a servant of an evil figure to survive. It depicts a bloody war among humans aiming for greater power and greed. The sequence that unfolds in a heartless world where the wicked are entangled by their own scheming is full of suffocating pain rather than satisfying catharsis. The movie’s highlight is the bloody battle at the funeral. Plus, Asura‘s excessive violence is uniquely displayed in the car chasing scene. Han Do Kyung’s wild run in the heavy rain efficiently shows his accumulated emotions turning into madness.

Spoiler

The Villainess (2017)
D53B9F6A-615E-4C97-AA17-524CDC4538AC.jpg

Credit: Next Entertainment World

The Villainess captivates the audience with its wild and dynamic action stunts. The film depicts the story of an elite killer, Sook Hee. After getting a chance to live her new life, she faces a secret behind her identity and starts to confront her fate. Action Boys and Confession of Murder director Jeong Byung Gil was on board for the film and overwhelmed the audience with its breathtaking intensity. He created a bloody action sequence of a gang rushing with weapons in cramped hallways and stairs shot from the first-person point of view. The scene itself was like a declaration of the director stating that he has put his heart and soul into the sequence.

The Villainess is one of the rare movies with a single female lead and provides a novel experience with various eye-opening action stunts. Notably, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum made their motorcycle chase scene with the Japanese Yakuza as a homage to The Villainess. Featuring Jeong Byung Gil as a pilot episode director and executive producer, the movie will have an Amazon Prime makeover.

Edited Hong Hyun Jung: I am a K-content guide who publishes various articles for people to enjoy Korean movies and dramas deeper and richer. I’ll introduce you to the works that you can laugh, cry and sympathize with.
Translator Cho EK: I’m a big fan of Korean dramas and movies.

Actor Jung Woo Sung donated 100 million won for Afghanistan.

On the 8th, the UNHCR Korea representative announced the donation of Jung Woo Sung. Jung Woo Sung has been working as a goodwill ambassador for UNHCR in Korea since 2014.

Jung Woo Sung said, “Many Afghans have lost their homes and are living in a dark time due to the recent situation. I hope this small contribution to these people and UNHCR working in dangerous places”.

He also urged the public to pay attention. “Now is the time for the whole world to pay attention to the humanitarian tragedy that is taking place in Afghanistan”.

“Despite the various dangers and tragic circumstances, cannot even escape from their own country. Please listen to their urgency. We have to stand up for them” he continued.

The recent crisis in Afghanistan has caused more than 590,000 internally displaced people this year alone. 18 million people, nearly half of Afghanistan’s population, are in need of emergency assistance to survive.

Decades of civil war and conflicts have displaced more than 3.8 million Afghans. 90% of the refuges who cross the border are protected by Iran and Pakistan. 80% of Afghan refuges are women and children.

UNHCR is continuing emergency relief work at the site of Afghanistan. The organization added, “It is expected that at least $299 million will be required for the activity”.

Jung Woo Sung has consistently donated to refugees at home and abroad. He also met refugees and internally displaced persons from all over the world, including South Sudan, Iraq, Nepal Lebanon and more.

Last August, he donated to Rohingya refugees. Rohingya refugees suffered from violence in Myanmar. Jung Woo Sung quietly sponsored domestic refugee children who are having difficulties due to medical expenses.

Actor Jung Woo-sung donates 100 mln won to support humanitarian efforts in Afghanistan

By nyway@yna.co.kr | September 08, 2021

SEOUL, Sept. 8 (Yonhap) -- South Korean actor Jung Woo-sung has donated 100 million won (US$85,740) to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Korea to provide humanitarian aid to people in war-torn Afghanistan, officials said Wednesday.

According to the South Korean office of the U.N. refugee agency, Jung, the goodwill ambassador for the agency, donated the money to "help Afghans under threats of violence and terrorism."

"I hope this money will help Afghans who have lost their homes and are living in dark times in the recent crisis and also UNHCR officials working to help them," Jung said, calling for more attention to the situation.

Since the Taliban took over Kabul last month, violence and fear have escalated in Afghanistan, prompting many Afghans to flee the country.

More than 590,000 Afghans have lost their homes and almost half of the country's population, or 18 million people, are currently in humanitarian crisis, according to the UNCHR Korea.

South Korea has evacuated nearly 400 Afghan co-workers and their family members under a military mission, codenamed Operation Miracle, as they faced possible Taliban threats for having supported foreign operations.

Since being announced as a goodwill ambassador to UNHCR in 2015, the 48-year-old actor has traveled to many countries in refugee crisis, including Bangladesh, Iraq and Nepal, and continued to work to raise public awareness on the issue.

In August, he provided a donation to Rohingya refugees who fled from systematic discrimination and military violence in Myanmar.

He also donated money to help children refugees settled here to receive the medical treatment they needed.

Jung has starred in a number of hit movies, including "The Good, the Bad, the Weird" (2008) and the "Steel Rain" series released in 2017 and 2019. (END)

Several other stars recognized in annual awards hosted by gov't

Oscar-winning actress Youn Yuh-jung was named as the winner of the highest cultural order, the Geumgwan Order of Cultural Merit, for her contribution to Korea's film industry.

Several others in pop culture industries, including actors and musicians, will be awarded at the 2021 Korea Popular Culture and Arts Awards, hosted and organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in collaboration with Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA), Thursday. The ceremony will be held online at 6 pm.

Youn became the first Korean actor to win an Oscar for her performance in the critically acclaimed film, "Minari." On Thursday, she became the first star to win the highest cultural order. Until last year, there had been no Geumgwan order category ― the highest recognition ― in the pop culture awards, so there are no previous winners. But this year, the culture ministry created the category to recognize Youn's achievements overseas for her role in "Minari."

Oscar-winning film "Parasite" director Bong Joon-ho and lead actor Song Kang-ho were awarded the Eungwan cultural order in 2019.

Legendary folk singer Lee Jang-hee and late film producer Lee Chun-yeon will also receive the second-highest Order of Cultural Merit, the Eungwan.

Veteran actor Park In-Hwan, who recently starred in the TV series, "Navillera," and star screenwriter Noh Hee-kyung, who wrote the romance series, "It's Alright, This Is Love," will receive the next highest medal, the Bogwan.

There will be seven recipients of Presidential Commendations this year ― actors Jung Woo-sung and Kim Yeong-cheol, singers Kim Yon-ja and Lee Juck, TV series "Vincenzo" writer Park Jae-Bum, variety show "Hangout with Yoo" producer Kim Tae-ho, and voice actress Choi Soo-min.

Another "Minari" star, Han Ye-ri, will be awarded one of the Prime Minister's Commendations, along with actress Lee Jeong-eun, musicians Woong San and Jeong Won-yeong, music director Kim Moon-jeong, voice actress Ahn Gyeong-jin and choreographer Kim Seol-jin.

For the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Commendations, there will be nine winners: K-pop groups NCT Dream and Oh My Girl, actors Lee Jae-hoon and Oh Jung-se, comedian Ahn Young-mi, voice actress Choi Duk-hee, musicians Seo Young-do and Koh Sang-ji, and model Choi So-ra.

The annual state-run awards was founded in 2010 to pay tribute to those who have contributed to promoting Korean pop culture and the arts. The winners are evaluated for their performances and contributions to the industry as well as their public popularity.

The 12th edition of the awards will also feature performances from some of the recipients, including NCT Dream, Oh My Girl and jazz singer Woong San. Singer Kim Tae-yeon teamed up with hip-hop musician Aquinas as well as ALiEN dance group for a collaborative performance.

The ceremony will be streamed at 6 p.m. Thursday through KOCCA's official YouTube channel and SBS Medianet's official K-pop channel, The K-POP.

Jung Woo-sung, who was on the podium, drew laughter with a witty feeling, saying, "If the winner had been decided after the 'Squid Game', I came here alone thinking that it would have been a cool, timely, and agile award even if actor Lee Jung-jae had won."

Jung Woo-sung said, "It's a lot of pressure to win an award. He said, "I constantly ask myself if I fit the values and meanings of the award," and added, "It's too big and meaningful to be evaluated for my footsteps, so I'll work harder in the future by proving that I'm an actor and filmmaker who fits that value."

Meanwhile, director Lee was recognized for directing more than 20 films by 2014, founding the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, and training students at universities.

The Good People Artist award, which is given to artists who have shown exemplary activities of giving back to the community, will be given to Jung for raising public awareness on refugee crisis and providing humanitarian aid for people in need as the goodwill ambassador for the U.N. refugee agency.

Director Yoon received favorable reviews at local and foreign film festivals for her debut film "Moving On."

As for the Theater Artist award category, the winners were not selected because many performances did not take place due to COVID-19.

The Artist of the Year Awards selects artists who have been recognized for their outstanding achievements in the film and theater industry throughout the year and gives a total of 100 million won in prize money and a plaque. The awards ceremony will be held at Myungbo Art Hall in Seoul on Nov. 18. (END)
