Plot

The drama resolves a serial murder case in order for a detective to go back to his original life because of an unfortunate accident.

Han Tae-Joo leads a crime investigation team. He has experienced a rapid rise in his career and he trusts data over people. While investigating a serial murder case, he has an accident. When Han Tae-Joo wakes up, he finds himself in the winter of 1987. He does not know why, but he is now a detective appointed to work at a police station in a small city. To get back to the present day, Han Tae-Joo tries to solve a serial murder case. (Asianwiki)

Notes

The drama is a remake from UK drama series Life on Mars (2006-2007). In the original series, after being involved in a car accident in 2006, DCI Sam Tyler wakes up to find himself in 1973, the era of 'Sweeney' type policing, Mark III Cortinas, and flared trousers. The series combines elements of speculative fiction and police procedural.

That will be...interesting. Who will be Gene Hunt I wonder?

I think it will be Lim Chang-jung`s character. Jung Kyung Ho and Lim Chang Jung will be the main leads if they will accept the roles. But I think they will sign for this drama.

It would be even more interesting if they completed the series With Ashes to Ashes.

Lim Chang-jung decided not to appear in OCN's new drama "Life On Mars", which is scheduled to be released in the middle of this year.

If Lim Chang-jung had appeared on 'Life On Mars', he would have returnrf to the drama for the first time in six years but the comeback was canceled due to miscommunication. Lim Chang-jung has been focusing on film and record activities.

Yessss... Life on Mars!

With Jung Kyung Ho no less... *happy dance*

Let's hope PSW says yes!

I hope so too.  I’m so thrilled to have JKH on screen again.  I have never watched the BBC series though . Not quite sure what to expect .  But does the beginning remind you of Tunnel ? Like how he ended up in the past & how he needs to solve some case to go back to his time ? Is the bbc series like that too ?

I'm on board! You bet that i'm on board!

I was such a big fan of the original BBC drama! It was crazy at that time how people obsessed over this show. I still have the dvd and watch it  often: i will never get over Sam Tyler and Gene Hunt. LOM  is forever on my top ten of the best shows ever made.

I haven't watched Tunnel but it seemed that it had a real sci-fi set up with time travel being a huge part of the plot.

In LOM, we don't know what happened to Sam Tyler until the very end and the idea that his work on the 70's could affect the future is only a speculation.

I obviously can't tell more: i don't want to spoil anything!

The BBC version had 2 seasons of 8 episodes which makes a perfect format for an adaptation. The cases weren't very memorable, the most important elements were the bromance, the 70 's and the contrast with our time. The show implied that in Gene's Hunt's world,  there were some forces fighting against each other but never develop it and i think it can be given more places and thoughts on screen.

The heart of the drama is really Gene Hunt: you can't tame him for the sake of being politically correct. He MUST stay misogyn, racist and homophobic, a smoker and an alcoholic who once a while takes bribe and can threaten the innocents. A real brute with a weak conscience but with a large heart and the desire to be better.

I would die of happiness if Ahn Mi-Na joins the cast! I haven't seen her in anything since the masterpiece that was A Man's Story and she was outstanding in it. I really hope she will get her chance to do her comeback in this one. She has all what it takes to play the female lead in this drama. Annie in the BBC version was strong and soft, vulnerable and very brave at the same time. She had a lot of emotional scenes and requires a versatile actress with a real presence though her character is discreet compared to the men.

Fingers crossed that this project will go well!

Life on Mars remake courts Jung Kyung-ho, Go Ah-sung, Park Sung-woong

by girlfriday

JungKyungHo_GoAhSung_ParkSungWoong1.jpg

British television series Life on Mars is getting a Korean adaptation on OCN, and the potential cast is coming together nicely. Offers are currently out to Jung Kyung-ho (Smart Prison Living), Go Ah-sung (Radiant Office), and Park Sung-woong (Man to Man) to headline the time-slip crime thriller about a detective who travels back to the 1970s and has to solve crimes to return home. It sounds like Tunnel in reverse, but that’s not a bad thing—I’d watch Tunnel again forwards, backwards, or sideways.

The BBC drama originally aired in 2006 and was subsequently adapted into American, Spanish, Russian, and Czech versions, which is hopefully a good sign that it’s a got a great story. It’s about a contemporary detective who gets hit by a car and wakes up in 1973, where he is still a police officer at the same exact precinct, but as a junior officer one rank lower. The original was more of a classic police procedural, focusing on different crimes in each episode, but the Korean adaptation will be about a serial murder case.

Jung Kyung-ho is up to play the lead character (Sam Tyler in the original), a detective who struggles with the lack of forensic procedure and the old-school way of investigating in the ’70s. A major theme in the original show is this character’s confusion over whether he’s a time-traveler or a crazy person, though it remains to be seen if that ambiguity will carry over in the adaptation.

Thanks for the update @larus

What a disappointment! I feel very sorry for Ahn Mi-Na! I guess she wasn't enough famous to take the part, because her talent can't be doubt.

I never saw Go Ah Sung in anything so i hope she will do well.

The casting choices  seem spot on and i trust the PD who did well on Heartless city though the drama lost his edge at midway but more because of the writing..

However i would prefer another air date: i had hope that the next summer would be the season of  Voice 2....

I watched the British show when I heard about this drama but I still have to watch the last episode. I still dabate if I should watch it before the Korean adaptation will air or not. I watched British crime drama Luther as well. I liked both shows and in my opinion, the best of both shows are the characters. The cases were alright but what I like the most are the lead characters. They chose perfect actors for their stories. If the Korean version will have the right cast and will have a good writer who will be able to create the dynamic duo`s chemistry and adapt to Korean realities, it will be a good remake.

I agree that Gene Hunt was the heart of the story. I needed often to give facepalms seing this character but no mather how "brute" he was, I couldn`t hate him at all. Maybe it was the actor`s charm/ talent. I know Park Sung Woong and I think he will do a good job in this role. Hope he will make this character his own, his own version of Gene Hunt.

It is kind of similar. It is Tunnel in reverse like Dramabeans said. When the hero arrived in the past he was politically corect and the others were not. I read that this time the hero will go back to 1980 (and not in the 70s like in the British version). I wished to see more of the 80s in Tunnel so this time I have a chance. Plus, it is about a serial murder case also. In the BBC version, it was like a procedural crime show with a case in each episode.

About the ending... I heard that US drama changed the original ending. I am also curious how this kdrama is going to end.

You should definitely watch the final episode: not only it's one the finest hour of tv that i ever seen, which left me wrecked for good and bad reasons but  it answered without ambiguity the mystery of what happened to Sam since his accident and gave him a proper send off.  It will without a doubt shake completely your view on the show.

I say "bad reasons" not because the writer made bad choices but because his choices triggered a lot of controversy/discussion among the fans: how to consider the end? Weren't Sam's actions through the episode too dark? Can this end be morally acceptable? I won't lie: i had a hard time to follow Sam's decisions at the end. It wasn't the only choice or the best one for me. But no spoilers!

From what i see and i know from kdramaland, i don't think that the writer will take the same road but i'm willing to be proved wrong.

I really hope that she'll get a role, even a small one. There few others characters that i can see her play: Sam's girlfriend or his mother. The later is "meatier", so i would go for this one if i was her.

I just hope that this adaptation will keep a place for those two female characters who are important for Sam, despite their lack of screentime.

It seems to me so logical that OCN is making this adaptation, it fits perfectly their original creations spirit: crime/thrillers with a supernatural/sci-fi twist and strong bromance with  dominant male characters. It's impossible for them to fail this one.

It's Tunnel in reverse. Tunnel saw CJH go to the future and grapple with the wholesale technological and social changes there.

The original BBC series which was widely acclaimed is definitely worth watching. What I especially liked about it was the clash over values and different styles of policing. More importantly at least for this K remake actors like JKH and PSW would play off each other superbly which is really the main thing for them to get right. This dynamic would take on another layer of meaning especially in light of how JKH's prison officer often clashed with Officer Paeng's approach to being a prison warden in Prison Playbook.
