[interview] The Celebrity November Issue - Oppa is back


Kangta, Shin Hyesung and Lee Jihoon’s project group S have gathered together after 11 years to sing. Somehow, a grand description of “Oppas’ Comeback” doesn’t seem to fit them as well as “The Outing Of Close Friends”. Because these three friends who love singing the most are just doing what they’ve always been doing."Woof woof", "bark bark" the studio is a pandemonium, an "utter mess". In order to portray the image of a familiar neighbourhood oppa out to shop for pet food at the mart with his companion pet, Kangta brought his pets Venus and Mayo, and Shin Hyesung personally liaised Duyu, Yeondu and Sarangie from his acquaintances. Adding in the photographer’s pet Hoochu, all 6 puppies ran around, in between the staff. In such a situation, ‘Oppa’ Kangta, Shin Hyesung and Lee Jihoon, who’re stars with highly loyal fandoms, were on the verge of becoming isolated. But they did not gripe nor did they rush the photo shoot despite the disorder. Kangta, in-charge of S’s producing, frequently discussed about their comeback schedule with the management team, and Lee Jihoon and Shin Hyesung prepared for the photo shoot while playing with the puppies and changing their clothes. They don’t even greet each other the moment they see each other. It was too easy-going and quiet to think of it as the gathering of a highly sensitive trio. "The secret to the continuously growing friendship amongst three men after debut is to not meet up often. In the past, when we were getting to know each other, we did live while stuck together. When about 10 years has passed, you don’t really need to take care and contact each other, and it becomes a family like relationship where it won’t be awkward even if you meet after a long time." Kangta calls this the natural result of a friendship of close to 20 years.


"Everyday, from eating, to our hobbies, and even traveling, we did it together and then eventually started finding out own lives. In fact, it was because other people don’t meet with us that the three of us gathered together. A friendship like this is possible because we’re not the kind that met out of selfish concerns." As Kangta explained it logically and in detail, Lee Jihoon would add in his own opinion. Apart from minor squabbles they had after drinking, they don’t remember having any conflicts, and even little disputes are a thing of the past. They can understand everything just by being together, unsurprisingly, this is the secret to maintaining their friendship. A concrete example where their tight friendship can be proven is when Kangta and Shin Hyesung plays with the puppies they brought along. Lee Jihoon said, "When I go to Kangta’s house, if I even sit on the sofa, one puppy will be on my shoulder, one will be on my leg, and the other will sit on my knee, and I was surprised. There are times where they’re like a blanket." Sure enough, when Kangta appeared in <I Live Alone>, he was the talk of the town for raising 4 puppies, Ssen, Venus, Mayo and J, like an expert. "When I think about it, I seem to have grown up with dogs. As I belatedly started living apart from my parents in 2011, I started having dogs again. If I was an oppa to the puppy that I raised together with my parents, after I started raising the dogs alone, I became their dad." Although he started raising dogs because he likes dogs to begin with, he felt that for someone like him, who spends more than half of a year in overseas promotions, leaving a dog alone at home was like abuse. He brought back Venus for Ssen, who was alone, and also brought back Mayo, when he couldn’t put him down after seeing him at the vet. The moment he had three dogs, getting the fourth wasn’t anything major, and brought in the youngest, J. "If it was out of a selfish desire to resolve feelings of loneliness, there’s no reason for me to raise four of them. It is true that their welcoming when I return home is a source of comfort. Even if I return drunk, even if I return disheveled after a few days of work, the puppies think of me as the best, and look only at me without any calculations. This is a happiness that is hard to put into words." Kangta’s love for his puppies is as special as the friendship amongst friends.
It took the trio 11 years to once again come together under the name of project group S to sing a song. 11 years was the time where they stood alone, challenged other areas, and built new careers. As the new year came, they share their massive schedule for the year, kept estimating the possible time where S could promote, and while doing so, a few years passed by. Kangta mainly focused on overseas activities, like China, Lee Jihoon was busy acting in dramas and musicals. Shin Hyesung, as everyone knows, made a successful comeback as part of the longest-running idol group Shinhwa. Despite all that, it was thanks to their will that project group S did not become a one-off project that ended with the hit song “I Swear”.


"Even if we were more successful than we had expected back in 2003, there isn’t a lot of people in the public who remembers about us in detail. This is something that we’ve been preparing since a long time ago, and it’s a burden as we’re worried that we’d be seen as jumping on the bandwagon." Kangta carefully expressed his worries. Recently, in the music industry, idol groups that had promoted in the late 1990s and early 2000s have made successful comebacks, receiving positive response from fans and the general public after a long time. Although it was a beautiful time where fans’ fantasy of “our oppas will definitely be back” turned into reality, did he want to say that S’s promotions ran contrary to that? It was surprising that he would think so carefully of an enthusiastic comeback mode.
"Honestly, we’re the opposite of that. S was started with the intent to show the music that we like, so this time too, even if it isn’t trendy or unusual, we very much wanted to show what kind of harmony that only the 3 of us can create, what S’s music style is." After hearing that, to lump them under the phrase “Oppas are back” after being encouraged by the comeback craze is not fitting as the three of them have steadily continued with their individual activities and were successful. "Of course we’d be happy if oppas are back and we got reactions like how can they be as handsome, how are they just like the past." Indeed it is up to Lee Jihoon counter humorously.


Shin Hyesung is the one who knows the current trend in broadcast programmes the best and has maintained his variety sense and he very clearly judged which programme is the most beneficial to S and even taught them know-hows for broadcasts. He is the star who created laughter, that even long-time fans are surprised with, through <SNL Korea> and <Shinhwa Broadcast> etc, during Shinhwa’s come back. To the extend that the public jokingly say that although the album producer is Kangta, the variety programme director is Shin Hyesung.
"You won’t be able to see S on <SNL Korea> during our promotions. That was the first and last time in my life. (laughs) But if Kangta and Lee Jihoon goes on it, I’m sure they’ll do extremely well. I’ll probably be watching silently behind." Shin Hyesung, who stressed that his two friends will do very well with R-19 jokes, was the decisive factor in making S’s promotions possible in this year. Shinhwa and his solo activities have always been planned, and he has never had his promotion activities overlap each other but he could no longer delay singing together with his longtime friends. "As compared to it being a burden on my stamina due to overlapping schedules, it was just that it was difficult to fix a timing because I’m part of a group." Although he spoke as if his decision wasn’t something really important, while working on the album, in order to make it as perfect as possible, Shin Hyesung was the one who tormented producer Kangta. Because they’re singing together after a long time, they’re more ambitious as things progressed. As beautiful as the harmony of three cream of the crop vocalists was, suddenly, I’m curious if it wasn’t equally tiring during production.
"Because three vocalists gathered, surprisingly, it was easier on me as the producer. When I produce my solo album, there’s no one to objectively direct my songs and I felt that was a pity. These guys listen and make accurate judgements. They also understand the feelings of the composer well." Like what Kangta said, it was only difficult to get the three of them together, but during production everything moved with lightning speed. "We are very clear on each other’s vocal style so there was no problem at all with the distribution of parts. What’s interesting is that, the three of us have completely different voices but those who’ve heard our songs ask if it was sung by one person."
The trio’s harmony that sound like one voice, according to Kangta’s words, S’s album is mainly made of songs that are suited for listening at the end of a tiring day, on a quiet night. Like how one listens to a quiet piano piece or a New Edge album when looking to calm down, this album contains comfortable pop ballads that is suitable even for the cold air of late autumn and winter. This also started from the friends’ belief that the best style of songs that Kangta composes will become S’s colour. At the start of the interview, Lee Jihoon said that the three of them became closest friends because no one wanted to meet with them but if it was a friendship like this, I think the three of them alone is more than enough. "I am confident that the songs that S presents will be liked by the public." I start to believe firmly in what Shin Hyesung said.

Born in 1979 and close friends, singers Kangta, Shin Hyesung and Lee Jihoon’s project group S have returned to their fans with a new song in 11 years, and revealed their thoughts.
On the 24th, Star News met with Kangta, Shin Hyesung and Lee Jihoon prior to their appearance on KBS 2TV music ranking programme “Music Bank” and they conveyed their feelings on the new album concept and their promotions.
Kangta was in-charge of writing, composing and even producing all 5 songs from their new album “Autumn Breeze”, including title song “Without You” and he revealed, “This album wasn’t created to be a commercial success, it was an album born simply to show our fans the music that S wants to make. We made a comeback in 11 years because we wanted to show our music.”
Kangta added, “The title song ‘Without You’ was made through continuous discussions with them (Shin Hyesung, Lee Jihoon) too. For me, this is my first appearance on a music ranking programme in 6 years and at our first performance on “Mcountdown’ yesterday (23rd), it felt slightly unfamiliar but because I was with my friends so it felt reassuring.”
Shin Hyesung said, “Kangta and (Lee) Jihoon are close friends of mine, just like Shinhwa. Because it’s a performance with my friends, so it’s fun and comfortable.”
While continuously warming up his throat, Lee Jihoon said, “Although I meet with them often, it has been a long time since we’ve come together through music so it’s enjoyable. I too feel comfortable standing on stage because (Shin) Hyesung and Kangta are there.”
Lee Jihoon acted as a couple with Girls’ Generationa’s Yuri in “Without You’s” MV and he said, “My chemistry with Yuri in acting was good,” and also conveyed his thanks to Yuri for appearing in S’s music video.
S also alluded that they are enjoying promoting together with hoobae Super Junior, who have hit their 10th anniversary.
S said, “During today’s morning rehearsal, Super Junior helped monitor our performance. It was fun because Super Junior, whom we’re not awkward with, was there.”
S’s new mini album “Autumn Breeze” was released various music sites this noon. This is the first time in 11 years, following their first album, which was also a full album, in 2003. Their album will be available offline on 27th.
S began the promotion for their new song through 23rd’s “MCountdown”.

I like Autumn Breeze and I fall in love with UTOPIA.  Almost all songs in this album are so typical of their music styles, slow and beautiful, but Utopia sounds different, in it they really shows off their amazing vocals. Kangta wrote this song beautifully. I don't know how to express it in English but in this song I can see how they're able to blend their powerful vocal abilities into one lovely harmony..for me it's one of their best songs.
Now I'm anticipating Hyesung's next Once Again project. His collaboration with Ock Joohyun will be awesome and their song 'after…love' will remind me of……. Eric *lol* 
I hope Hyesung will also have Jihoon in his collaboration project list thou…Hyesung and the Shinhwa member no. 7.. these two buddies.. oh how I love to see them together in more projects and to see them more often..

S (H.O.T's Kangta, Shinhwa's Hyesung, and actor-singer Lee Ji Hoon) sat down for an interview on the October 25th broadcast of KBS 2TV's 'Entertainment Relay'!

When asked if the lyrics for title track "Without You" was about his own personal story,Kangta shared, "My personal story is also in the song." He also mentioned how he drew inspiration from the news of Lee Soo Man's wife passing away, sharing, "Lee Soo Man, who I'm closest to, went through a heartbreaking time. As I asked myself how an eternal parting would feel like, that became the motif [for the song]."

When asked if there were any funny episodes, Lee Ji Hoon shared, "At the SMTOWN concert in Shanghai, it was our first official performance in 11 years... The music came out and then suddenly stopped. So all three of us were checking our microphones and earpieces." Kangta added, "Someone ran up to us and said, 'The power went out right now.'"

During the 'target talk' segment, in response to the statement, "This friend is a night king [loves the nightlife]," Kangta chose Hyesung. He explained, "[Hyesung] is quiet. In the case of Ji Hoon sshi and I, we're very talkative when drinking or when girls are around. But all the girls end up having feelings for Hyesung." When asked which member sulks the most, they all picked Hyesung. Kangta shared, "I don't think he is the type to sulk. But I think he's acquired it because he thinks a lot about the fact that he is the blood type A."Hyesung added, "I feel like since I have the blood type A, I should sulk often."

When asked which member is different offscreen, Hyesung and Lee Ji Hoon both chose Kangta. Hyesung explained, "Kangta's broadcast image is not funny and serious. He has that image. But in private life, he's really funny so I can't understand why that doesn't show on broadcast."

#Oppas ’ autographs remain the sameQ: Have you spent the time doing all that you’ve want to do? Seems like the fans will be quite curious on how you’ve all been.

Kangta: I think I haven’t been able to do everything that I’ve wanted to do. I haven’t been able to get married yet either ^^ In my case, I’ve had a lot of schedules where I have to go back and forth between China so I haven’t been able to be seen in a lot of domestic programmes but I’ve been busy through various activities and so I’m not able to do everything I’ve wanted to ^^ Even so, the studio is near my home, and I always think of making what I think of into a song so I’ve continuously been working on my music.

Lee Jihoon: Recently I’ve appeared in musicals “Wicked” and “Priscilla”, and I’ve been busy with the album production with Shin Hyesung and Kangta up till it was completed.

Shin Hyesung: I’ve prepared for S’s album while having my solo project ‘Once Again’ (a remake project that involves re-interpreting one of Shin Hyesung’s previous classic songs every month), and because Shinhwa’s comeback is upcoming next year, so I’m busy with recording as well as comeback preparations.

Q: Even though time has passed, but the three of you not only have maintained your good looks, your voices too, be it in the past or now, are still as good.Shin Hyesung: My voice has changed quite a lot. Should I say that it has gotten deeper as time passed…or that it seems to have gotten huskier. Surprisingly it is Jihoon’s voice that has changed the least.Kangta: Surprisingly…be it Hyesung or I, our voices has gotten a little thicker, and as our singing style got simpler, it also got deeper. But even so, the fans like it and I’m very thankful for that.Q: The new album “Autumn Breeze” is released 11 years after the previous album.

Kangta: The colours that the songs in “Autumn Breeze” have is a little sad. It has the feeling of Autumn…emotions related to romance, stories on love, there’s a lot of that. Autumn has the season of separation feeling. And because of that, so we titled it “Autumn Breeze”, to represent the album containing songs that are suitable for autumn. 

Q: When listening to the songs, it seems like there’s a lot of songs related to the feelings of a man when in love?! and also stories of separation. Are they songs born out of experience…Kangta: Yes. For me, I’ve had such experiences.Lee Jihoon: After we finished recording all the songs, we went to Busan together for a holiday, and that was when we heard about Kangta’s story. When listening to the songs after hearing that story..oh..my tears just poured out. That’s why, for people who’ve experienced a similar pain, they’ll probably be reminded a lot of it while listening to the songs. Not just me, Hyesung cried a lot too.Shin Hyesung: I didn’t cry a lot…just became teary-eyed?! (laughs)Q. The fans are very curious how you all got to come together again after 11 years….

Shin Hyesung: After releasing our 1st album 11 years ago, we’ve always had the idea to release another album after successfully completing promotions. We’ve continuously prepared for it but because of our individual promotions, we couldn’t find a right timing. And so, 11 years passed.
Lee Jihoon: When we were young, there was a time for recharging during promotions. We’d rest for about 6 months and be able to do the music we want to then..but nowadays promotions run throughout the year. So, as Shin Hyesung has his solo albums and Shinhwa, I have musicals and dramas, and Kangta has China promotions…so it got harder to find a right time. Even so, we wanted to fulfill the promise of releasing an album again one day and we managed to after 11 years.
Kangta: It is one of the things I’ve wanted to do. 

Q. Is there anything that you feel has changed from when you promoted the previous album and this album?
Kangta: For Hyesung, because he has promoted yearly as Shinhwa, so he is used to it, but for Jihoon and I, we felt..be it the TV station system or reporting time, it has really changed.
Lee Jihoon: Coming in at 6:30am and holding a pre-recording session is really cruel for us. Shin Hyesung kept telling us “You guys be prepared” prior to the start of our promotions and now I get what he meant.
Kangta: Even so, it is some form of compensation when we come early and are getting ready in the dressing room, and our hoobaes each bring a CD over to make their introductions and give us their CDs, I feel happy then.

Q: I’m curious how you feel when you look at the 1st album album jacket, if you don’t mind me asking, is it possible to take photos while you pose according to the 1st album’s jacket image? I think the fans will be very happy… (Members readily stand up)

Q: Thank you for your co-operation. You really look the same even when taking such photos..has there been a time when you’ve felt the members have changed?!
Shin Hyesung: Promoting together this time round, I feel that the members have gotten really curious. (laughs) Because when we go to the TV station now, it’s all our hoobaes, and the staff too, they used to be FDs in the past and have now become PDs, and I can feel how foreign and awkward it is for the members. There are times when things like that are interesting.
Lee Jihoon:…Mmm..stamina?!
Kangta/Shin Hyesung: Hahahahaha We don’t even do dance songs…why do you say that..when you have the best physique.
Lee Jihoon: Even though I have had a lot of performances but it is hard to maintain that feeling of nervousness from when we arrive in the morning till the actual broadcast ^^

Q: That’s interesting. I’ve come with questions that the fans might be curious about for each member. Firstly, Kangta. This is a Kangta-style ballad that people listen to because they have trust in you. I’m curious what kind of album was your goal when you were producing all the songs for the album?
Kangta: Firstly, like how it is titled “Autumn Breeze”, I wanted to make songs that when listening, while the autumn wind blows and it is a little depressing, can remind the listener of his past, and will make him think once that it is his own story. Whether those are happy memories or unhappy memories or painful memories….to achieve a bond of sympathy for “Without You”, I wrote a lot about insignificant things but the other 2 gave me a lot of ideas too. Shin Hyesung offered the line about nagging over clothes, and Jihoon offered the line about soccer, and I think the song was able to appeal to more people because the lyrics was a combination of the members’ suggestions. This S album took about 7~8 months to produce and there are songs within that were written a very long time ago. Producing the title song “Without You” itself took about 1 week, when you include even the post-production portion, it took about 3 months.

Q: Is there a special working style for songs that is unique to Kangta?!
Kangta: I don’t have any special working style…in the past, if work wasn’t going smoothly, I would just sit there, now if I sit down to work but nothing comes to mind, then I’ll just not work on it.
Lee Jihoon: In the past he will simply be sitting there plainly dressed, now whenever he works on the songs he would be dressed neatly. Haha

Q: Next, I’ll ask Lee Jihoon. In the music video for “Without You”, you acted as a loving couple with Girls’ Generation’s “Yuri” and also had to act out heartbreaking separation scenes. Please talk about whether it is difficult to act out separation scenes, episodes during filming and your chemistry with Yuri etc.Lee Jihoon: It’s my first time acting in a MV.
Kangta/Shin Hyesung: Really?!
Lee Jihoon: Yes. It was more difficult than I thought. Because I had to act when I was only told about the situation so it was hard to grasp the emotions, and I think I was able to do well and without any awkwardness because Yuri was very friendly while filming, like a dongsaeng. I’m also a fan of Yuri so it was fun to be able to act with her. I guess I’ve done all that I’ve wanted to through the MV. Q: Because your physique is so good….
Shin Hyesung: Even though the stylist brought along the outerwear he said he won’t wear it Ahahahahaha
Lee Jihoon: At the scene where I was carving wood, I really tried my best. Paid attention to my tendons…don’t females like that?! AhahahahahahaQ. Last of all, I’ll ask Shin Hyesung. There are a lot of songs with separation as the theme in this album, I’m curious which song does Shin Hyesung identify with the most? Shin Hyesung: As compared to identifying with the song based on my experiences, the song that I immediately choked up upon listening was “One Last Memory”. At the last chorus, there’s a line that goes “You walk towards me from afar”, she is very faint and you really want to see her but should I say, the feeling of her walking over?! It’s really heartbreaking.Q. Thank you for participating in the interview so faithfully. Last of all, please say something to the fans who have waited for S’s comeback.As much as it is awkward to say that Group S came back after 11 years, we hope it’ll be a present. Phrases like “First come back in 11 years”, “emotional ballads” are awkward. The three of us are thankful to be able to find a time to promote together, and although promotions are short, as compared to thinking of what we can show, we had more hopes that it will be a present to our respective fans so we hope you would think of this as a present from S, and hope you listen to the album with a happy heart.And really, last of all, after having prepared an album that’s like a present for the fans who have waited so long, S’s final present, the revealing of their Secret Letter~!!

@choeey2 after listening more, I agree with the others who prefer the older version... it has a kinder feeling? I just love Lyn's voice... She has one of the most emotive voice... Usually I don't prefer female voices but I love hers, one of the female contestants I love on IS2
The new version is still very good and it gave me goosebumps but the older version sounds more honest ^^ 
Ah Zhoumi?  I'm not really familiar with him but from the pictures yes he looks like Kangta too... I think Zhoumi looks like Siwon as well...
