melusine
http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/art/2.../201_25093.html Documentaries Touch Hearts of Viewers by Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter Real stories of real people are sweeping television screens these days, reaching the hearts of viewers and beckoning in a new trend in television. Instead of being boring and predominantly educational, documentaries depicting the lives of ordinary people are becoming increasingly popular. Recently, major broadcasters have shifted documentaries to prime time slots, with some programs recording ratings in double-digit percentages, something only popular drama series have traditionally achieved. In the past when many documentaries focused on historical, environmental and social issues, this trend would have been difficult. But as documentaries are increasingly focusing on the lives of ordinary people, viewers have started to appreciate these "real" and "live" programs. So what is it that draws viewers to documentaries that depict the everyday lives of normal people? "I think people enjoy (documentaries) because they portray the pure inner world (of normal people). It's not about people who are pretty or rich like characters in dramas, but about those we can meet anywhere," Yun Yang-seok, a former producer of "Human Theater" told The Korea Times. Among others, KBS' "Human Theater," MBC's Medical Documentary "Doctors" and cable channel tvN's World Special "Love" are captivating viewers with their heartwarming stories and messages. [...] While "Doctors" portrays the life of patients and doctors, cable channel tvN's World Special "Love" will show the touching relationships between Korean celebrities, photographers and poor children living aboard. "'Love' is a charity and donation documentary. With the help of various volunteer groups, a celebrity and a photographer will visit children in need and offer assistance," Lee Dong-wook, a public relations official of the channel, told The Korea Times. For the first project, actor Ryoo Seung-bum and photographer Hong Jang-hyun flew to Huaykra village, a six-hour drive from Chiang Mai, Thailand. At the village, the crew helped build houses for poverty stricken children and their families. Hong, as a photographer, took photos of the children, their homes and the whole volunteering process. The photos will be sold at an exhibition later this year. The proceeds will be sent to the children for further support. A total of eight episodes are currently underway, with eight celebrities and four photographers participating. "Viewers don't know the people in these (programs), but they feel a connection. It's like watching your own life on television. Viewers learn, laugh, cry and sympathize with the people and reflect on their own lives. As a producer, it's hard to bring this through a program, but it's worth it," Yun said. "Human Theater" airs Monday through Friday at 8:20 p.m. on KBS, Medical Documentary "Doctors" airs every Monday at 6:50 p.m. tvN's World Special "Love" schedule has not been confirmed yet Ryoo Seung-bum segment will air on May 1.More news / news / news / news / news / news / news / news / news / news / news / news / news http://www.chtvn.com/VR/love/ (tvN 월드 스페셜 LOVE) <Website Flash> tvN World Special Love Episode 1: <Clubbox DL|Clubbox DL|Clubbox DL|Clubbox DL|Clubbox DL|Clubbox DL> Download via Aja-Aja Watch online: Part 1 + Part 2 + Part 3 [credit: http://cafe.daum.net/XGDRIVER/LtsC/7972] Watch online (8 parts) Say it with me: Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww~~~~~

melusine
RSB will be appearing in the upcoming second episode of 장윤주의 29 (Jang YoonJu's 29) airing on Sept 2 at 6pm. The Mnet show is hosted by Korean top model JYJ, and it was obvious they were friends by how comfortable RSB was chatting with her over lunch. They discussed his movies "Conduct Zero" (he experienced the pressure of carrying a movie for the first time), "Crying Fist" (it made him feel like a real actor), and "Bloody Tie." He especially has fond memories of filming "Waikiki Brothers" on a tight budget; that through close proximity and hardships he became friends with costars Hwang JungMin, Park HaeIl and Oh KwangRok, as well becoming more immersed in the character he was playing. He also talks about how strange the blogging world is (heh); he only started his cyworld blog mid-2008. http://mnet.mnet.com/NProgram/jang29/?bidx=jang29 <Trailer> News / News / News [장윤주의 29]Verse2. 2008-09-02Mnet Jang YoonJu's 29 Episode 2: <Watch online> <Watch online> <Watch online Part 1 + Part 2> <Clubbox DL|Clubbox DL|Clubbox DL>

rubie
Tuesday, 2 September 2008 Chungeorahm sets up "29 Years" Company behind megahit "THe Host" unveil new project Written by Han Sunhee SEOUL - Chungeorahm, the Korean shingle responsible for mega hit "The Host," has unveiled actioner "29 Years" as its next big budget production. Like "The Host" which was full of veiled social criticism, "29 Years" is certain to be contentious in Korea. Based on a popular comic strip serialized online by cartoonist Kang Full ("A.P.T."), pic probes the Gwangju Massacre, a real life incident in 1980 when troops opened fire on civilians in the city and killed thousands. Story follows a former soldier who, in order to assuage his guilty conscience 29 years later, sets out to assassinate the person who ordered the massacre. Former Korean president Chun Doo-hwan is widely suspected to have given the order and the film makes a fictionalized Chun the assassin's target. Scripted and to be helmed by Lee Hae-young, pic is to be produced by Chungeorahm on a $6.5 million budget, with lensing beginning this month and delivery skedded for April 2009. Chungeorahm has assembled an ensemble cast led by Kim A-jung ("200 Pounds Beauty") and Ryoo Seung-bum ("Bloody Tie") and also stars Byun Hee-bong ("The Host",) Jin Goo ("Epitaph") and Chun Ho-jin ("G.P.506".) Chungeorahm is retaining local distribution rights and has not yet fixed int'l sales representation. rubie
Thanks for the links, melusine.. those are so awesome! I even found the photo of BH that I think I'm aware of  .. but have not seen before! October 10, 2008 [HERALD INTERVIEW] Incomplete without photography At first glance, Zo Sunhi, the widely praised photographer of pretty much everything, looks like the archetypal artist. She appears relaxed and very bohemian. Usually terms like avant-garde or bohemian carry an image of pretentiousness. But she seems content to be who she wants to be - an unpretentious woman in an industry known for characters who put up an facade of hauteur. Known for bringing out the truth in her subjects, she has spent two decades photographing celebrities, advertisements and album covers as well as places around the world - most notably India, where she plans to "try and travel there every year for the next 10 years." Her recently-penned instructional book for aspiring photographers, "Shoot however you want to shoot," lays bare her philosophies toward her craft. She hopes people can look at the world in different perspectives using the power of photography. With no formal education in the art form, she spent two decades honing her expertise and has garnered widespread acclaim, most notably her work with celebrities and public figures. A firm believer in preserving photography in its purest form, she wants to make one thing clear - "great photography should be achieved the second you press the shutter of your camera and not as a result of crafty editing," she said. "As far as determining color tones, texture, and the mood, editing is indeed an important part of the process, but as far as the impact of the imagery that a photo would have at first sight, the editorial process needn't be applied." Zo Sunhi [Ahn Hoon/The Korea Herald] In her newest book, she tells aspiring photographers to "get lonely." By self-inducing solitude, the capacity to view objects, landscapes and scenes becomes easier. "Around 2000 and 2001, I backpacked in India for 15 days. It was the first time in my life I'd traveled alone and because I didn't know the language aside from basic English phrases to get around, communication with people was sparse and I felt lonely," she said. "But because there wasn't anybody to interact with, I saw things that I wouldn't have if I was busy chatting away with someone through my entire stay. So I found myself conversing with myself and going through a bit of self-reflection. That really helped me see the world in a different light - no pun intended." Having begun her love for photography in college, it was initially the "calming" sound of the camera shutter that attracted her. "The first time I was attracted to photography was the instant I pressed the shutter of a camera. I loved the sound it made just before that feeling of excitement and tension of capturing the exact moment I wanted to capture," she said. Taking a drag from her cigarette, she looked up at the loft of her photography studio with a sentimental expression on her face. "I thought to myself, spending the rest of my life experiencing these collection of emotions and the anticipation of hearing the shutter would be something I could devote myself to as long as I live." She cannot imagine life without photography. She feels that without it, she is not complete. In the 20 years Zo has devoted her life to photography, she says, "there almost hasn't been a single day that I didn't have my camera with me at all times." Her obsession was even more so when she took a seven-month sabbatical after giving birth to her son, Ki-hwee. It was then that she realized she could not live without her passion. Without it, she, and by extent her family, would become miserable. But even passion can become stale. "I've felt jaded and exhausted many times from photography. But you really just have to keep shooting even if you are feeling a bit unmotivated or just out of ideas, because by constantly taking photographs, new inspirations will form and when that happens, all of the negativity that had been festering about is tossed out of the window and you feel revitalized," she said. As previously mentioned, Zo is considered the most sought after celebrity portrait photographer in the nation. Actors, actresses and singers all want their pictures snapped by her. "I try to catch the single most dominating attribute the subject has and magnify it. Everyone has that one thing that can best represent who they are and what they stand for," she said. "The way my subject stares into the viewfinder is also an important factor in determining how I'm going to approach shooting." Throughout her career photographing all types of celebrities, she considers method actor, Ryu Seung-beom, to be her favorite subject. "He's someone who has shown his soul in front of the camera. He's the one person who wasn't inhibited or concerned with how amazing he should look, nor did he try to hide anything in front of the lens," she said. "There was no false pretenses or superficiality to him. He was an open book. Truly a free-spirit. And because he didn't care how he looked, there was truth in his photographs." Asked who she would photograph if she had the choice of anyone living or dead, she said, "I was in middle school when my father passed away and I would have liked to have photographed him. Which brings me to Song Gang-ho, who is someone I would like to photography as well. Snap him in a way that would give him a father-like aura," she said. "As far as historical figures, I would like to have a session with Park Chung-hee. I think my characteristic in the way I view things when I take pictures comes from significant memories from the past and the environment I was in and when he was assassinated, I was still in elementary school. I was only in second-grade but I felt this impending doom that my country would go up in flames. "Marilyn Monroe is also another I would like to photograph, but not in the cliche way of how she had always been photographed. I would want to deviate from her iconic image and capture her for who she really was. I'm sure there was sadness in her life and I would have liked to have captured that side of her." rubie
October 23, 2008 Evokative grabs Korean sports pic "Fist" Distributor takes Canadian rights to lauded film Written by Patrick Frater TOKYO - New Canadian distributor Evokative Films has acquired local rights to "Crying Fist," a sports action-drama by South Korean helmer Ryoo Seung-wan. Film, previously repped by Show East is now handled by new Korean sales agent M-Line Pictures and former Show East sales topper Michelle Son. "Fist," which stars leading character actor Choi Min-sik, preemed in 2005 edition of Cannes' Quinzaine des Realisateurs section and had a glittering festival career with appearances at Karlovy Vary, Melbourne and Vancouver. Formed earlier this year Evokative describes itself as "a new kind of distribber" focusing on home entertainment and limited platform releases in theaters. melusine
Thanks for the articles rubie! What photographer Zo SunHee said was lovely.^^ Y'know, RSB's most admired seniors are Choi MinShik and Song KangHo. Seeing them together in such a fun CF, I can't help but hope that he gets to star opposite SKH someday (I'm not counting that one scene they had in "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" bec RSB only had a cameo), like he did with CMS in "Crying Fist" (btw I'm glad that it's finally getting a Canadian DVD release + North American distribution, it's a GREAT film). As far as I know, he and CMS got along marvelously on set (despite having different acting styles, heh--CMS can turn it on/off while RSB is more Method) and also did a CF afterwards. It's cool to see stupendous veteran actors (as in the crème de la crème of K-cinema) being so generous with their knowledge and experience to the younger generation, like passing a baton of sorts. --------------- SeungBeom and HyoJin (along with Kim HyoJin, Lee Hana, Jung RyeoWon, and RSB's pals Bae JungNam and DJ Fhifan) attended designer Lee SukTae's Spring/Summer '09 collection on Oct 24 at SETEC (Seoul Trade Exhibition Center) during Seoul Fashion Week. melusine
On Nov 13 at 8:00 pm an accident occurred at Seoul Olympic Park during the launch of Audi A4. The VIP seats section collapsed 2~3 meters, injuring several people (7 at last count). Ambulances and fire trucks were dispatched, and the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The artists' management agencies have confirmed that they're more or less okay; KHS reportedly has minor abrasions. rubie
November 14, 2008 Celebrity Stand Collapses at Audi Launch The launch ceremony of the new Audi A4, held on Thursday afternoon at the Olympic Hall in Seoul, was marred by the collapse of VIP stands near the stage, leaving a number of celebrities, including top actress Kim Hye-soo, injured. According to witnesses, the VIP seating stand collapsed at 8:10 p.m. when crowds swarmed towards the new Audi car as it appeared center stage. Celebrities, including actresses Kim Hye-soo and Choi Kang-hee, and actors Jung Woo-sung, Lee Jung-jae and Ryu Seung-bum, were sitting in the VIP area. Some escaped the site unharmed, but others sustained minor bruising. An Audi official said, “We are aware that one of the guests was injured, but none of the celebrities needed hospital treatment as far as we know.” A fireman said, “Two or three celebrities sustained light injuries, like scrapes.” One witness said, “The VIP seats looked like they were made of wood, but I think the stand collapsed under the pressure of the stampede.” Credits: englishnews@chosun.com, thanks to melusine for the highlight http://english.chosun.com/w21data/html/new...0811140015.html VOD clip from news.empas.com VOD clip from news.empas.com
