melusine
Top Cineastes to Grace Art Film Fest By Lee Hyo-won, Korea Times Staff Reporter That special time of the year has come around, when South Korea's top filmmakers and actors turn into film festival programmers. The 4th Cinematheque Friends Film Festival will take place Jan. 29-March 1 in Seoul, and director Park Chan-wook and some 20 other cineastes will meet with the audience to show and discuss 26 movies they have personally selected. ''I don't think there is a film festival like the Cinematheque Friends Film Festival anywhere else in the world,'' Park told reporters last week in Seoul. ''Where else can you see all the representative cineastes ― directors, critics and stars ― gather in one place to introduce, watch and discuss old movies with fans?'' ''Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans'' (1927) by F.W. Murnau will open the festival. Actors Kwon Hae-hyo and Ye Ji-won will host the opening event at Cinematheque Seoul Art Cinema in Jongno. The country's singular ''cinema library'' will transform into ''The Cinematheque of Happiness,'' a venue for screenings and live conversation. Festival programmers have chosen classic Hollywood movies including Marylin Monroe's ''Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'' (1953), and other selections by participating actors and directors vary in time and space, ranging from Italian classics to Korean contemporary films. Conversing With Stars Park, the creator of the ''Vengeance'' trilogy, and director Oh Seung-uk (''Kilimanjaro'') chose three films starring the ''best villains'': Marco Ferreri's ''The Grande Bouffe'' (1973), Andrzej Zulawski's ''Possession'' (1981) and Jules Dassin's ''Night and the City'' (1950). They will join the audience after each screening (Feb. 7-8) to discuss the films. Director Jeon Kye-soo (''Midnight Ballad for Ghost Theater'') and heartthrob Ha Jung-woo (''The Chaser'') will join the audience for ''His Girl Friday'' (1940), Feb. 20. Jeon said he chose the movie because his upcoming project starring Ha is also a romantic comedy. ''When romantic comedies started to appear in the sound film era, 'His Girl Friday' presented something new and fresh. It is heavy with dialogue and takes place in a limited space, but it has an exciting tempo,'' he said, adding that the film might inspire him for his own work. ''I also wanted to show Ha Jung-woo, Cary Grant,'' he said. Ryu Seung-wan, the hip young maker of ''Dachimawa Lee,'' will speak about ''All the Marbles'' (1981) Feb. 12 and ''The Good, the Bad, the Weird'' director Kim Jee-woon will present ''Boy Meets Girl'' (1984) Feb. 14. The following evening, veteran actor Ahn Sung-ki will provide commentaries on ''Midnight Cowboy'' (1969). Hong Sang-soo, the master of minimal realism (''Night and Day''), will present ''Greed'' (1924) Feb. 22. Also featured in the festival is ''Mouchette'' (1967) by Robert Bresson. ''Cinema Angels'' ― actors Lee Na-young, Kim Joo-hyuk, Shin Ha-kyun, Jung Jae-young, Ha Jung-woo, Park Hae-il and Kim Kang-woo ― have donated funds to purchase the film for the cinematheque. Festivalgoers will also be able to see an exhibition of photos taken by some 30 cineastes, including directors Im Kwon-taek, Park Chan-wook and Im Soon-rye and actors Ha Jung-woo and Ryu Seung-bum. Many non-English language films are offered with English subtitles. Tickets cost 6,000 won for adults, 5,000 won for teenagers and 4,000 won for senior citizens and the physically disabled. Admissions for the opening ceremony is 10,000 won (including the after party). Visit http://www.cinematheque.seoul.kr for more information. melusine
According to My Daily+Sports Khan+dongA.com+Osen+dongA.com, RSB will be starring in an action sageuk film to be directed by Lee Joon-Ik ("King and the Clown", "Once Upon a Time in the Battlefield", "Radio Star", "Sunny") and co-starring Hwang Jung-Min(!!) and Uhm Tae-Woong(!!). It'll be based on the manhwa '구르믈 버서난 달처럼' (Like the Moon Escaping from the Clouds) by Park Heung-Yong which is set during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592. (one of the articles describes the 3 characters as a sort of Joseon-era NomNomNom ) Park Heung-yong is well known for strong cartoon work. Like the Moon Escaping from the Clouds criticizes social inequalities between different classes in the Joseon Dynasty. In describing the life of a legendary swordsman, the story reveals various controversial issues. The main figure, Gyeonja, will invite readers to join his journey to find himself through critical reflection. In order to deliver profound philosophical concepts, Park uses skillful techniques, such as repetition, exaggeration, and reduction in structure. His drawing is also very powerful and realistic. "The author, through the depiction of a refreshing resistance to corrupt power and class, ultimately gives the reader a victory of tears and leaves them with an enlarged rage. Through the restrained lines and powerful expressions depicted in the illustrations, the reader finds the hidden message that the world is within the heart of the individual reader and, only when that heart is properly tended to and the self is sought can the world be truly seen." --Han Chang-wan (Cartoon critic) Source: Korean Books Publishing Project :w00t: :w00t: :w00t: :w00t: Oh K-cinema gods, please let this happen, please let this happen, please please please... melusine
2/1/09 - RSB was at the doljanchi for the second son of his close friend Im ChangJung. It was held at a restaurant in Gangnam, Seoul, and attended by 150 pals from the entertainment and fashion circles including Lee ByungHun, Shin DongYup, Kim SunAh, Kim MinHee, So YooJin and RSB's girlfriend Gong HyoJin. News / News / News / News / News / News / News / News / News / News / News Dol or doljanchi is a Korean traditional way of celebrating the birthday of a one-year-old baby. This ceremony is to bless a newborn baby to have a prosperous future and has taken significant place in Korea. The birthday babies wear hanbok and a traditional hat; jobawi or gulle for baby girls and bokgeon or hogeon (호건) for baby boys for the day. The highlight of the dol is a ritual called the doljabi where the child is placed in front of a table of foods and objects such as string, books, brushes, ink and money. The child is then urged to pick up an object from the table, where it is believed the one selected will foretell the child's future career. For example, if the child picks up a brush or book, he is destined to be a scholar. If he picks up money or rice, he will be wealthy; cakes or other food, a government official; a sword or bow, a military commander. If the child picks up the thread, it is believed he will live a long life. This is followed by feasting, singing and playing with the toddler. Most often guests will present gifts of money, clothes, or gold rings to the parents for the child at this time. Source: Wikipedia P.S. rubie
^ Thanks so much melusine-ssi for the wonderful sharing, finally learning about doljanchi. Saw the ceremony in lots of Korean drama (where else! ^^) but had no idea what's it called. We sure learn something new, every day. And oooh! Almost didn't realize Byunghun-ssi's photo at first glance (blurr blurr) but so happy that he attended along with RSB & GHJ-ssi. They are really good buddies of ICJ-ssi, indeed. LOL! 2 years.. and 2 sons for Im Chang Jung & his wife. Hope those will be bigger hints for someone.. still waiting.. still unattached.. and still single. Yupyup! Looks like baby boy's going to be a doctor, huh.
melusine
rubie I didn't know what the ceremony was called either! lol. You do learn a new (Korean) thing each day. Yep, RSB is pretty close to ICJ; he mentioned ICJ as one of his best friends when he guested on Come To Play to promote "Dachimawa Lee." While doing an interview for his 2007 movie "Underground Rendezvous" (in which RSB had a cameo), ICJ even slipped that RSB was seeing someone...back when he and GHJ still weren't confirming that they were back together. ICJ used to be a singer and RSB moonlights as a DJ, so music is one of the things they share. Do you know how LBH and ICJ became friends? Can't seem to remember a movie they were in together (though a young ICJ was in "Beat"--the movie that launched a young Jung WooSung to stardom <GBW digression! lol>). Maybe an old drama or they started at the same agency? It's fascinating trying to trace the origins of these celebrity friendships, it feeds my gossipy soul heh. I also saw pics of RSB and LBH at ICJ's wedding and the wake of ICJ's mom a few years ago, so it looks like they really are good friends of his--there during the sad and happy moments of his life. On LBH's singlehood: Oh who really knows about the lovelife of these stars? He might already be taken for all we know. Can't blame him (or anyone else) for keeping their relationships private amidst the Netizen Craziness of Korea. I mean, I don't think Kwon SangWoo's fandom has fully recovered yet from the triple revelations/bombs of girlfriend-->wife-->baby, all within the span of a couple months. C'est la vie.^^ Enjoying a cup of coffee with girlfriend Gong HyoJin. credit: GHJ's cyworld [also via Newsen + Sports Chosun + Star News + My Daily]

Guest nchristi
Just a note to thank you, melusine, for keeping us updated on RSB. He's the only actor I never, ever tire of. The older he gets, the more I like him! Though I have to admit that one of my favorite photos of him is when he was a little boy in the sand giving the camera his victory sign! Too cute! It's so nice to be able to come here and get a quick 'fix' to lift my mood. No matter how I feel, I always find myself with a big smile on my face when I see photos of RSB, or read articles about him. I wish I could contribute more to the thread, but all I can do is express my great appreciation. Thanks again for all that you and others share with the rest of us. melusine
^You're very welcome, nchristi! Though it's always been my pleasure to share RSB updates, your appreciation means a great deal, it warms the cockles of my heart and puts a smile on my face.^^ I find him endlessly fascinating as well, and that as he matures as an actor he only keeps getting better and better at his craft. Sometimes I'm afraid he's having too much fun DJ-ing that he'll abandon acting altogether. I hope that never ever happens (nebeo!). *fingers crossed* Which is why I was jubilant to hear that his Lee Joon-Ik movie is pushing through (costarring 2 other actors I love - HJM and UTW!). I must admit though that I'm wondering how RSB will fit in a sageuk; he has such a modern/contemporary/urban aura to him. But then, that's half the fun, right? The how-the-hell-will-they-pull-this-off factor, heh.
melusine
RSB guested on the SBS Radio PowerFM show 'Jung Ji-Young's Sweet Music Box' (정지영의 스위트 뮤직박스 - 107.7MHz, 12:00 MN~2:00 AM) last March 10. DJ JJY asked his reaction to Lee Hyori's statement that he's the actor she most wants to work with (RSB: "A drama with her, sure, why not?" SeungBeom, ANDWEEEEEEE!! :tongue2: I hope he's just being polite. I like her personality on variety shows, but anyone stupid enough to have seen "If in Love...Like Them" *coughMEcough* knows that Hyori is a terrible actress. ). They also talked about his love for music, and he read passages from one of his favorite books, Paulo Coelho's "Like the Flowing River" on air. [via Newsen] credit: SBS P.S. Guest nchristi
Today I came across an article and photo from My Daily. When I Google translated it, it had this paragraph: Ryuseungbeom the homepage and in the main screen, "No smoking, please pray this week," said publicly this week for up to a non-smoking and was lifted. It seems he has also given up drinking. However, my main concern was in trying to find his homepage they refer to! The one I used to access is no longer around, it seems. This article mentions "MySpace." Anyone have the link to that? Or any other RSB website, even if it's in Korean?
melusine
^nchristi Yep, he has. P.S. He posted on his cyworld today that he's quit smoking and drinking, and is asking for prayers to hold fast to his decision. [via Sportsseoul + Newsen + My Daily] From what little I could understand of his most recent Cine21 interview, it seems he got affected by people who were criticizing the trappings of his clubbing life, that he wasn't being a good testimony (RSB has been very vocal lately about his renewed Christianity). That's why he made his decision. (From a non-religious POV, it's good that he's quit smoking <which is so prevalent in Korean showbiz circles>. Healthy lungs, yo!^^) Google mis-translated his blog as 'My Space' when actually most Koreans use Cyworld. Fyi, I put up links to his blog, agency website, daum cafe, etc. on the thread's first post. Anyway, here's the link to RSB's cyworld minihompy (mini-homepage): http://minihp.cyworld.com/pims/main/pims_m...sp?tid=26530833

melusine
3/30/09 - RSB was a guest lecturer at Kyungil University. The lecture titled '배우 류승범의 표현' (Ryu SeungBeom: The Expressions of an Actor) was held at the university's Library Auditorium where the 250 original enrollees of the course quickly ballooned to 500 attendees, eager to hear his insights on fashion and acting. He was invited by good friend and top fashion photographer Zo SunHi, who is an associate professor in Kyungil's Department of Photography & Video. In coordination with 2 other departments (Fashion Stylist and Beauty Coordination), the classes scheduled every Monday from 4pm-6pm with different lecturers per week have become popular as a unique teaching method. via Kyongbuk.co.kr + Newsis + imaeil.com credit: http://www.cyworld.com/movemind90/2826346
