I was meaning to reply you but forgot. Sorry. The subs in my set are pretty good. KBS-subbed sets normally have very decent English subs. I can't read Chinese.

Enjoy Godok. Twenty episodes of RSB. YUMMY!! :w00t::w00t:

***********

Oh, I can't read Chinese, either! Just to say, I got the DVDs from somebody on Ebay, the outside of the packaging and the actor's names are in Chinese, but it's still a pretty good quality set. The English subs are definitely good! Can't wait to watch more of it! If I hadn't been sick last night I would have watched more :( I can't help laughing and smiling at every scene RSB is in, though! He's done so many dark films lately, I like watching him be upbeat!

Reposting what I wrote today about two RSB movies:

SMA... I've always liked her and she didn't disappoint here. At the start of the movie, she gives the impression that she's going to be this sweet dainty thing but as soon as RSB starts hiding from her, she becomes Miss Feisty. And oh boy, can she wail.

If you want to watch a lighthearted movie, if you want to see the amazing RSB (yes, yes!!) or the beautiful-as-always SMA, watch Beast and the Beauty. It's jolly good fun.

credit: Jisubaddicts.com

haha! I noticed the same thing about SMA's character when I wrote my soompi.com review! Usually the blind girl is all sweet and innocent but in this one, wow, she totally surprises! It's like, one second she's nice and cute, the next she's ready to kick whoever gets in her way! SOOO funny!

And RSB is just so adorable in this one! The funniest moments for me, though, where whenever he was spying on the girl and that crazy jopak would come along and try to help him! I still laugh like crazy thinking about it!

So your "Godok" DVD sets have Korean audio, right? Forgive my ignorance, but I can't stand watching K-dramas dubbed, ugh.

I pretty much agree with you guys about "Beast and the Beauty". Wasn't SMA sooo purty and sassy? And the movie really put RSB's comedic talents to good use. Those 2 had some nice chemistry going on and their mutual likability was a definite plus; I don't think the movie would've worked as well if they weren't the leads. <333 the pics you posted, mj07! "Beast and the Beauty" had a particularly good marketing campaign, imo. Cuteness galore.

That opening scene

where DongGun is carrying HaeJoo around and showing her how 'beautiful' the world is, then afterwards we see the stark contrast to reality

? Loved that. Also how at first

he pretends to be a different cab driver each time he brings her home (not that that fools her--she's blind, not pabo

 )

. It should seem somewhat creepy because he's practically stalking her, but I dunno, it's easy to see how his devotion won her over (hell, it won ME over! ...but then I'm easy when it comes to RSB, so never mind  ). It was amusing to see how increasingly complicated his schemes to avoid facing her became (Hawaii! Surgery!), made doubly hilarious by that gangster's well-meaning (but ill-conceived, heheheheh) attempts to help. And that flashback about his highschool band and the un-adoring crowd! Lol, no wonder he's so insecure about his looks.

My Godok set has Korean audio. I won't watch if it's dubbed. No way.

It was amusing to see how increasingly complicated his schemes to avoid facing her became (Hawaii! Surgery!), made doubly hilarious by that gangster's well-meaning (but ill-conceived, heheheheh) attempts to help.

When I was rewatching Conduct Zero the other day, I realized that gangster in B & B is also in Conduct Zero. Did you see him? He's the captain of the Tae Kwon Do team that got stuck in the alley in the opening scenes. I was pleased as punch to see him. He was hilarious in B & B. That trolley scene!!:lol::lol:

My Crying Fist Limited Edition set should arrive soon. Can't wait!!! :w00t:

I'm thinking I definitely need to watch Crying Fist again, it's been about a year since I saw it.

melusine, I thought RSB and SMA had GREAT chemistry, I was only disappointed they didn't have more scenes together! He spent so much of the movie trying to avoid her, or pretending to be someone else. Sigh…I need to see this one again, too! Wonder why it's so hard to get from YesAsia, it hasn't been out that long!

Did I mention I watched "No Comment" last weekend? That's another great one with RSB in THREE different roles (though the last one is a very short cameo, but still hilarious!)

PS, guess I DID mention it on the last page, but worth mentioning again! :D

Re Godok DVDs: Goody! The Chinese labels on mj07's set threw me off a bit. I'll keep my eyes peeled for a copy. (:

When I was rewatching Conduct Zero the other day, I realized that gangster in B & B is also in Conduct Zero. Did you see him?

I did, yeah. I'm cursed with the Hey!-It's-That-Guy! syndrome and have a gift for ajusshi-face-recall. I'm like that with Hollywood character actors too--which is pretty useful since I literally can't go to sleep without remembering where I saw them last. :phew:

Apparently Ahn GilGang (aka hilarious gangster aka taekwondo team captain) is a Ryu SeungWan regular. Funny how RSB seems to keep working with him, even in films not directed by his brother. I've seen AGG in "Arahan", "Crying Fist" and yet again in RSW's latest "The City of Violence"--you guys should watch this too! Action at its finest and most fun. Yes yes I'm also a RSW fangirl (is that sorta incestuous? lol). Love his films. TCOV is the first time I REALLY looked at the guy onscreen (he had a supporting role in "Oasis" but I was sooo focused on the 2 leads, I didn't really pay attention to anyone else. I can't even find his PCW cameos dammit <but thanks for the SfLV tip, mj07, I'll watch it again>).

As an actor, he's not bad. ^_^ After reeling at the undeniable resemblance a few times (that voice! those features!), I settled down to enjoying SeungWan's da moves, his deadpan comic timing (family trait?) and the fact that he's actually better-looking physically than SeungBeom (hee). RSB--who's homelier but somehow cuter--was supposed to appear in a cameo (as was Yang DongGeun), but the director felt having famous actors around would detract from what they set out to do. I felt a teensy weensy "aish, too bad" when I first read that, but after having seen the film, it was the right decision. RSW and Jung DooHong did a great job and twas nice seeing them in front of the camera (as leads!) for a change.

Those Ryu brothers are SERIOUSLY talented.

It's so sweet that they're extremely supportive of each other and that there's no rivalry between them because they're in different fields (which they rule :D). In "Crying Fist", imo, his hyung gave RSB his best role yet.

43071wh1.jpg

From the DVD commentary via OhmyNews:

"He mixes in a flurry of self-deprecating humor, a Ryoo Seung Wan trademark. His voice does go up slightly in pitch, however, and does shake slightly, as he discusses his brother's onscreen breakdown, and how the younger Ryoo had to access his real personality and real-life memories to play that scene. Instead of directly praising his brother's magnificent acting, he prevaricates by describing how the music director Bang Joon Seok wept his eyeballs out while recording music for this scene. Sly guy, but we know you love your kid brother, Mr. Ryoo - no use trying to misdirect us."

Awwwwwwwwwwww~~~ ^__________^

Speaking of...

My Crying Fist Limited Edition set should arrive soon.

*dies of envy* It'll prolly be a blast listening to the commentary with X's DVD review at hand.

You think you love RSB now??? Wait till you see "Crying Fist." Powerful, powerful film.

melusine, I thought RSB and SMA had GREAT chemistry, I was only disappointed they didn't have more scenes together! He spent so much of the movie trying to avoid her, or pretending to be someone else.

I think that's why I wasn't blown away by their chemistry. Because I didn't see enough scenes of them together. But I agree it was there.

Did I mention I watched "No Comment" last weekend? That's another great one with RSB in THREE different roles (though the last one is a very short cameo, but still hilarious!)

Unfortunately I've only seen the first short (RSB as the cussing, harried motel desk clerk is SCENE-STEALING GOLD lol; the fake slow-mo at the climax is pretty funny too), gotta make time to watch the rest. Didja like the movie? Do you agree with the Koreanfilm.org review that 'My Nike' is the best segment?

Posted

Hi Melusine! Here's my mini-review of "No Comment". I do agree that "My Nike" (by the soon-to-be director of "Welcome to Dongmakgol"!) was the best segment.

nocomment.jpg

Basically a excuse for writer (Welcome to Dongmakgol, Guns & Talks, Ditto)-director (The Spy, Guns & Talks, The Big Scene)-producer (WTD) Jang Jin to assemble some of his favorite actors and let some newbie directors take charge. At least one has gone on to do better things…

121417_NocomW600-.jpg

PART 1: Enemies in Four Directions, dir: Park Sang-Won

Said to possibly be Jang spoofing Four Rooms, Ryu Seung-Beom plays the beleaguered desk clerk at a cheap hotel. In one night he has to juggle the requests of 1) a group of jopak tending their ailing boss [who they need to protect from…] 2) a hitman whose weapon of choice is a phillips head screwdriver 3) another would-be killer (Jang Jae-Young) who's desperate for some matches and 4) a cockold who is trying to catch his wife with a gigilo (green haired Shin Ha-Kyun). Most of the jokes in this segment fall completely flat, with the exception of almost any scene with Ryu, and a slow-motion ending fight scene between all the jopak and someone who might be the the screwdriver assassin! Kind of a disappointment since it sounds good on paper, and has an assortment of extremely talented actors involved!

121439_Nocom5BW600-5D.jpg

121512_NocomW600-.jpg

PART 2: My Nike, dir: Park Kwang-hyeon (Welcome to Dongmakgol)

A sweet tale of a poor 14 year old boy (Ryu Duk-Hwan of WTD) growing up in the 80s whose dream it is to have a pair of Nike sneakers. The boy spends all his energy obsessing over the shoes, starring at them in the store window, stroking them when the sales woman isn't looking, seeing visions of the Nike swash in the clouds and in the crescent shape of the moon. Of the three segments in No Comment, Nike is undoubtedly the big winner, and shows the promise of what director Park would do a few years later with a certain record-breaking film. Ryu Seung-Beom takes on the role of an older brother whose dream is to be the most fearsome thug in the neighborhood (but who can't land a punch). Shin and Jang appear as older bullies who constantly steal money from the younger kids (I love seeing guys in their late 20s wearing a school uniform! :P)

121316_NocomW600-.jpg

PART 3: Church Sister, dir. Lee Hyeon-Jong

Kind of a single-note piece, this last part is probably the weakest of the three, except for a hilarious ending that has to be seen to be appreciated. Young soldier on leave meets up with the slightly older woman from church who he'd always been in love with. Now married, she still takes the time to hang out with him for the day, have a meal and see a movie (a spoof of "Happy Together" starring yet again, Ryu Seung-Beom!) She sees him to his train where he confesses his love and then jumps aboard. They then go on to tearfully cry out to each other through the window in the same vein as the most melodramatic of Korean dramas, only to be interrupted by … well, that would be telling! Anyway, the ending brings one huge laugh. Other than that, the biggest pleasure is playing "spot the characters/actors from the other two shorts", such as the ad on the side of a bus for Nike sneakers, featuring the boy from "My Nike"!

121339_Nocom5BW600-5D.jpg

Not a great collection of films, but worth it for a couple laughs in #1 and #3, and for the entire experience of #2!

I'm anxious to see "Crying Fist" again, but at the same time, don't know if I can stand watching everyone getting so beat up!

I'm also dying to know what RSB is doing for his next film! Anyone know a good source for this kind of info???

Thanks!

He's not very good-looking but he's got talent..and he's famous for his TALENT..which is def. respectable!!

There are too many celebrities that get famous for their looks...(park han byul..etc) but have no acting capabilities whatsoever!!

true, true…I do think he has a certain cuteness about him, though! :D

If that project pushes through, I will do Balki's Dance of Joy!!!!!!!!!!! Like you, shirley, I'm getting goosebumps just seeing those 3 names together. I love them all dearly. Thank you so much for the news! (And to think I didn't even babelfish that article when I saw it in Naver! I saw their pics and shrugged it off, thinking they prolly won one of those survey thingies again *bonks myself on the head*) Didn't know that PHI and RSB were friends with JSW too! (okay, this is the most exclamation points I've used in 1 post) I can't believe SeungBeom stood them up for dinner, hee. *wags finger at RSB* Sigh, RSB+PHI+JSW in one movie. *fans myself* I will faint and expire from happiness, I will be The Girl Who Went to Heaven. But of course I won't die without watching the film first. ^__^

mj07: Enjoyed reading your "No Comment" review. :D Oh and btw, RSB's been casted in "Doomsday Book", an omnibus film to be released in early 2007. He's playing a 'trash-eating zombie' (lol) in Im PilSung's ("Antarctic Journal") segment 'A Cool New World'. The other directors are Kim JiWoon ("A Bittersweet Life", "A Tale of Two Sisters", "The Foul King", "The Quiet Family") and Han JaeRim ("Rules of Dating"). Very very interesting.

thanks for all those "Crying Fist" promo photos, I love those, never saw them before! my friend watched 1 hour of the movie and then turned it off (I must admit, sometimes I think he has NO taste! what can I say?) I'm wondering if I should buy his DVD off him? I mean, the question is always "will I watch it repeatedly if I buy it?" Hard question to answer, though I love both the leads, it's a hard watch!

Also, you peeps think I should work up my "No Comment" review a bit and post it on Soompi.com? Is it worth it? I wonder, since the DVD seems to be out-of-print (sadly)? I hate to recommend a movie that people will have no way of going out and watching (unless it's on *gasp* Clubbox!)

If that project pushes through, I will ... faint and expire from happiness, I will be The Girl Who Went to Heaven. But of course I won't die without watching the film first. ^__^

LOL, correction: The Four Girls Who Went to Heaven... (melusine, mj07, shirley and thunder). Btw, that's the only movie of PHI that I have not watched.

Shirl, of course I won't forget your Mr Cho. I like him a lot too, especially in Who Are U. I didn't know he's good pals with both RSB and PHI. What a bonus.

About Crying Fist, surprisingly I didn't find it a "hard" movie to watch. It was sad but not heartwrenchingly so. I think I was just so mesmerized by the awesome acting. Plus I was in my usual silly ga-ga mode because of RSB. Each time he appears, my brain stops functioning and all I do is drool. :w00t: I'm a definite nutcase.

I have Arahan and Sunlight Pours Down coming my way. Thunder is a very happy camper.

Posted

Ooh, you haven't seen "Arahan" yet? I love the movie, can watch it over and over!

RE Crying Fist: I think the scenes I have a hard time watching are when CMS totally degrades himself on the street, turning himself into a human punching bag for all the passerbys. And ya, it is really, really sad, but a smorgasbord of acting, to be sure! Hmm…maybe not a smorgasbord (that just sounds good), maybe more an "all you can eat"?

Konbae for another great thread started by you, melusine! And can I just say that the thread's title is very cute!!!! I am not a Matt Damon fan, so I <3 Seung Boom more than Mr. Ripley!

I didn't know he was in "Guns and Talks". I didn't know him *then* when I first watched the movie (and future reruns had me focusing mostly on Won Bin :P). But I guess, even if I already knew him then, I still wouldn't have noticed him, as you have said it was a "blink-and-you'll-miss-it" moment. I would have to watch it again and this time, keep my eyes peeled for his appearance. Were he and Gong Hyo Jin still together during G&T? How cute that they are in the same film even if they did not share a scene. :)

I first saw him in "Arahan" and boy, what a riot! And I recently got to watch "The Beast and The Beauty." I was a wee bit distracted at first by the name "Dong Gun" :P But the movie's cute and funny and I even cried a bit in the end. That concert scene in school was soooo funny, where he and the handsome guy were singing and the crowd was following the latter to his side of the stage, leaving Dong Gun with only two people cheering for him on his side of the stage. And then he throws himself at the crowd and they toss him back on stage. LOLZ! And he looked even funnier when he lost an eyebrow!!!! His excuses to keep SMA from finding out the UGLY truth while he attempts to keep the handsome guy away by treating him out to lunch or dinner. Hilarious! And the monster voice is quite cute actually. :)

I'm just rambling. But hearing all your praises makes me wanna watch his other movies too.
