A powerful gangster story takes the stage:

Ryoo Seung-bum returns to the theater to take on a once-in-a-lifetime role

Source: INSIDE Korea JoongAng Daily

On a dark stage featuring the sounds of heavy bass guitar playing in the background, a movie poster of Al Pacino from the movie “The Godfather“ (1972) hangs on a wall. A spotlight catches Ryoo Seung-bum, the 36-year-old actor, as he appears on the stage. His bulging cheekbones and sharp-looking eyes make him look like a real gangster.

In a field crowded with stories in the romance or comedy genres, a play about a macho gangster who looks up to Al Pacino from “The Godfather” has attracted a predominately male audience - a rare phenomenon for theater, where 90 percent of the audience is female. Ryoo, who has focused on the silver screen recently, has made a comeback to the stage after 14 years in “Men’s Impulse,” which premiered 20 years ago, playing the role of a boss of a gangster group.

In an interview with the theatre magazine Scene Playbill, the play’s director, Cho Gwang-hwa, said that as the play is set in a world where men “dominate” the world, women were portrayed as the victims.

He worked his best not to insult the female audience, as misogyny has become a serious topic nowadays. He is hoping to portray the play as a social satire where men only ambitiously chase after power and fame.

Ryoo Seung-bum, who plays the role of a gangster named Lee Jang-jeong in the play “Men’s Impulse,” makes a comeback to the theater after 14 years away. Ryoo’s portrayal of a gangster was natural. He was a macho man at times, but also a caring father. [PRO'S LAB]

The play’s main character Lee Jang-jeong, played by Ryoo, is the son of a mother who is the victim of domestic violence from her husband. Jang-jeong’s father, who is only into gambling and drinking, has even hit his own son. Due to the influence from his father, Jang-jeong tries to protect his family, not realizing that he is also turning forceful and controlling. This becomes the impetus for Jang-jeong to make up his mind to become a boss of a gang and a father to his group.

As the play is about the world of gangsters, it is full of violence and abusive language. Some obscene scenes from the original play were revised to eliminate some inappropriate expressions that may offend the audience.

Ryoo has a history of playing roles of gangsters. He made his debut in a film directed by his brother, “Die Bad” (2000). He is best known for his role in the films “No Manners” (2002) and “Crying Fist” (2005).

At a press call held at CJ Azit on Jan. 19, Ryoo said “I have become interested in the field of theater. When I see actors perform in both movies and plays, I feel like having experience in both fields would improve my acting ability a lot. When I first saw the script, I started to imagine what the play would look like on the actual stage. This has made me want to take this role.”

Ryoo added that although he had been an actor for 18 years, it is still tough for him to deliver accurate feelings to the audience.

As Ryoo plays the role of a gangster from a rural area where they use a strong dialect, it was difficult for him to imitate the accent perfectly. He asked his colleagues for help and worked to improve his intonation.

The director said that the character of Jang-jeong should possess both warm and cold expressions in his face.

Sometimes, the character is very aggressive and acts violently, but at the same, he is very caring and protective of his family. Cho said that this is the reason why he has cast Ryoo for this role.

The play will run until March 26 at the TOM Theater located near Hyehwa station, central Seoul.

Also appearing will be RYOO Seung-bum, whose last role was in KIM’s THE NET, and Japanese star Joe Odagiri, who has appeared in KIM’s Dream (2008), while legendary screen actor AHN Sung-ki will also appear in a KIM film for the first time.

[Herald Interview] Ryoo Seung-wan has ‘no regrets’ about ‘The Battleship Island’

Veteran director remains confident about his much-debated film that aims to portray oppression in subtle fashion

“The Battleship Island” is a war flick which deals with the turbulent history of Koreans forced into slave labor by the Japanese on Hashima Island, the site of Japan’s first major undersea coal exploitation. It is also a film that is at the center of a heated public debate.

Some claim it depicts Korean characters as overly villainous in comparison to the Japanese corporate executives who held them captive. But the film’s director Ryoo Seung-wan is confident that he and his crew have given their all to the blockbuster, in both the scope of the cinematography and the depiction of accurate facts.

“It took a total of four years to complete the research and shooting,” Ryoo told The Korea Herald at an interview in Seoul’s Samcheong-dong last Thursday.

Finding records that contained an organized account of the events on the island proved a difficult feat, Ryoo said. “Novelist Han Su-san’s ‘Crow’ is the first work of art to try and deal with the subject. It was a challenge to wade through all of the scattered records.”

Ryoo, who debuted as a director in 2000, acknowledges his transition from making more entertainment-focused flicks to features with socially conscious messages. After the 2005 boxing drama “Crying Fist,” the 2006 gangster action movie “The City of Violence,” and the 2010 crime drama “The Unjust,” Ryoo sealed his status as a hitmaker with the 2013 thriller “The Berlin Files.”

Several of his films have starred his brother, actor Ryoo Seung-beom.

“He’s still my favorite actor,” the director commented on his younger sibling, who is currently residing in Spain. “We should make another film together in the future.”

image
Ryoo Seung-wan (CJ Entertainment)

Director Ryoo’s 2015 action-ridden satire of Korea’s affluent chaebol culture “Veteran” sold over 13 million tickets and became the third best-selling movie of all time in Korea. But Ryoo says he feels little pressure to live up to his past films, both in terms of social message and tickets sold.

Spoiler

“I’m the kind of person who only pursues stories that I’m dying to tell, the stories that will drive me crazy if I don’t tell them,” said Ryoo. “I’m glad when the public can see different sides of me through my films, but I’m very bad at calculating my career steps or things outside of the artistic aspects.”

“The Battleship Island,” starring A-listers Hwang Jung-min, So Ji-sub and Song Joong-ki and a massive set recreating Hashima Island’s coal mines, is Ryoo’s priciest undertaking yet, with a budget of 22 billion won ($ 19.5 million). But Ryoo says that any set, whether large- or small-budget, always runs short on funds. The astronomical amount, on the other hand, simplified the filmmaking process, allowing him to focus entirely on what he wanted to achieve artistically.

“Because the amount was something I couldn’t get my head around, all other thoughts escaped my mind. Rather, I figured it was an opportunity that I might never have again. It made me focus on the essence of the film. It was a huge venture for the Korean film industry as well. ... I concentrated only on what kind of situation, characters and sounds I wanted to create.”

Ryoo said he had been driven by a sense of duty to raise awareness of a deeply atrocious, but less publicized, historical subject.

He had first learned about the existence of Hashima Island and its history in 2013. “I felt so embarrassed. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t known about it until after my 40s.”

image
Ryoo Seung-wan (CJ Entertainment)

The controversy over the film’s historical stance baffles him all the more because he had meant to tread carefully around sensitive historical subjects.

“The coal mine was closed down in 1974 but it is still something that is very ongoing for the survivors that suffered there. We didn’t want to do them wrong.”

Much attention was paid to the detail of the workers slaving away 1,000 meters underground in the coal mines, Ryoo said.

“Down there, the heat was so intense people literally could not keep any piece of clothing on. We made (the actors’) skin shiny due to the continuous sweat and underground water, mixed with dirt and heat.”

The colonizers’ tyranny is expressed in a more subtle way, Ryoo remarks.

“In the movie, the Japanese never directly harm or get angry at the Joseon workers,” said Ryoo. “It’s the basic rule of colonization -- to create a collaborator among the oppressed, and create strife among the colonized.”

“The Battleship Island” opened in local theaters on July 26. It was released in the US and Canada on Aug. 4.

Korean replacement for Joaquin Phoenix in 'Joker?'

By Ko Dong-hwan The Korea Times

optimize

Joaquin Phoenix in "Joker."

With the critically acclaimed film "Joker" already drawing millions of Korean theater-goers, some who have studied the film has come up with a unique question: which Korean actors could play the role of The Joker in a Korean version of the film?

That virtual casting pivoted around Phoenix's impressive performance as the mentally unstable clown-for-hire Arthur Fleck in grim Gotham City whose psyche gradually self-demolishes and develops into that of the infamous Joker.

The candidates, mostly referred to in online comments, were praised for their performances in films or TV shows in roles not dissimilar to the brazen, twisted DC Comics villain.

1de1a86a14bc43a48f0a6a89254f7d68.jpg

(From Top) Shin Ha-kyun from "Pied Piper"

d5912757419e45238e91859219b10065.jpg

and Ryu Seung-beom from "Tazza: One Eyed Jack"

Shin Ha-kyun earned credit for his role in "Pied Piper" (2016) on tvN, playing an adviser to police emergency negotiation team. He was selected mostly thanks to a scene in which has a bloodied face and an untimely smirk.

Another poor man's Joker was Ryu Seung-beom and his performance of One-Eyed Jack in the 2019 film "Tazza: One Eyed Jack." Portraying a legendary poker player with an eccentric fashion style of hairdo and sunglasses, the con artist and gambler never lets out his emotion.

The last candidate is Kim Eung-soo who played a villainous, second-level "hwatu" gambler in the 2006 film "Tazza: The High Rollers." His fans mentioned his memorable performance in the box office hit where brutality and naivety were interestingly crisscrossed to give him an extreme personality in line with Joker.

Online evaluation stated that the three performers, with their own unique colors, "could assuredly digest the role of 'Joker' impeccably."

Currently, the couple is living in France. The bride-to-be is also focusing on prenatal care. Reportedly, the expected delivery time is at the end of this month.

SEM Company's representative said, "Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, Ryoo Seung Bum has yet to set a date for the wedding. He is planning to hold a simple ceremony with his family after his wife gives birth."

Ryoo Seung Bum has settled abroad since 2012. During this time, he studied forms of art and culture such as movies, fashion in Spain, France, etc.

In 2019, Ryoo Seung Bum also appeared on the widescreen after a long time through the film "Tazza: One-Eyed Jacks". In May, he heralded official acting activities when signing an exclusive contract with SEM Company.

Ryoo Seungbum

Unique from the beginning and still ingenious. The one and only actor!

Perhaps the easiest way to explain actor Ryoo Seungbum to people outside the Korean film world would be this sentence: ‘He is Director Ryoo Seungwan’s little brother.’  Along with Bong Joonho, Park Chanwook, and Kim Jeewoon, Ryoo Seungwan is one of the most talented Korean film directors of the time.  His younger brother Ryoo Seungbum became an actor by setting up a dark persona through the director’s films.  From Die Bad (2000), which is widely considered as a fine cult movie, to No Blood No Tears (2002), Arahan (2004), Crying Fist (2005), The Unjust (2010), and Berlin (2013), where the actor appeared as a supporting role, Ryoo Seungbum definitely created a ‘bully’ or ‘outsider’ character in his brother’s magnetic field.

His unique, atypical face for an actor allows Ryoo to create an ambivalent character with such a human aspect.  We cannot help mentioning his private life to describe the actor.  Since the 2010s, he has left Korea and lived in various European countries, appearing in just one film a year or so.  Sometimes he chooses not to appear in any movies for an entire year.  His fans call him a ‘bohemian actor’, and Ryoo does not own a mobile phone, let alone a smartphone.

Considering that Ryoo Seungbum has been consistently regarded as a character actor who will succeed Choi Minshik, Song Kangho and Seul Kyunggu, and one of the stars representing Korean films, some fans might complain that Ryoo is being too lazy.  Such complaint is understandable when we think about the completely different charms the actor showed in the two 2012 films Over My Dead Body and Perfect Number.  However, Tazza: One Eyed Jack, in which he starred in 2019 after a long interval, proved that Ryoo Seungbum is an actor who can lead big-budget franchise movie alone with his outsider image both as an actor and as a person.

Isn’t it impressive that Ryoo is constantly sought after by the Korean cinema while staying so free from it?  How interesting it is that he makes us rediscover him as an actor every time he appears on screen!  It is indeed what separates Ryoo from others.  Kim Dohoon
