Guest NJSK.
I've posted this, but I got many different responses. Which is the correct way, when... I'm talking with a GIRL that has an older brother. When I'm talking to her, and to refer to her older brother, is it correct to say "니 오빠?" or do I stick to "니 형?" I know the whole 오빠/언니 is for girls, and 형/누나 is for guys, but is it the same when referring it to a girl's sibling? It's 형 for me, but it's 오빠 to her. So, er... what's the correct way? Sorry about the... confusing post. whenever you're talking to someone about someone related to them, you have to think in THEIR position. so you say '네/니 오빠', because it's HER oppa. just think that you're them, and say what they would say. hope i made sense =)
Guest sweet_rain
Soompi is just the creator's nickname. ^ Hahahha~ Who woulda thought! Why is it his nickname though? Is there any meaning behind it? As with when to say Oppa or Hyoung...always put it in the viewpoint to who it relates to. eg: you're a guy, but ur referring to another girl's older bro....You would say "Her Oppa" NOT "Her Hyoung"....of if the guy is older than you...it would be "My Hyoung....Her Oppa" Simply... With Oppa...its always HER oppa (and MY oppa if ur a girl) With Hyoung...its always HIS hyoung* (and MY hyoung if ur a guy) *there are exceptions....sometimes girls call older guys "Hyoung" especially if they're a bit Tom-Boyish, etc..but these cases are rare. Practically, it is correct "새해복 많이 받으세요" is the equivalent of "Happy New Year" Literally it would mean "I wish u have many New Year Blessings" in English, but yep Koreans say it to eachother meaning "Happy New Year" Sae-Hae-Bok Mahni Budd-Euh Sae-Yoh! Guest tin27™
Arrasso (알았어) means "I know".....but given the context, it can mean "ok" is it similar to "arachi"(sp?)?? and what is "kore"?
Guest sweet_rain
is it similar to "arachi"(sp?)?? and what is "kore"? "arajchi" (알았지?) means something like...."You know?" Its the same verb "to know"...just used differently. Hmm..u use it in situations such as ummm....u can ask it as a question to clarify something... eg: u explain to someone how to do something, and u can ask "arajchi" at the end to mean "do u understand?" or "do u get it?" With "Kore" ...it means "Nose".

Jaeho
Kore? Did you hear it correctly? 고래 (gore) is whale. Don't you mean 그래 (gŭre)? This can mean "yeah/right/that is right" and so on.
Guest sweet_rain
i think tin27 needs to be a tiny bit more specific about what pronunciation is meant by "kore", lol It can be like Kor=코="nose" and as Jaeho+KAME have mentioned.. Gorae=고래="Whale" Geurae=그래="it is" Goh-rae=거래=transactions/trade (business term) ^well, depending on how u pronounce it, those are your best bet can u tell us where u heard it and what context it was used in?
