Born in 1963, Hur Jinho was first known as a film critic starting in 1987. Between 1992 and 1993, he dabbled in filmmaking, taking part in several short films in various capacities, including two films of his own, <Is love a sin?> (1992) and <For Scrap Iron> (1993). Hur worked in the directing team of Park Kwangsu and took part in the screenplay of <A Single Spark> (1995). His directing debut didn’t go unnoticed, as his drama <Christmas in August> (1998) became an instant classic, picked up Best New Director and Best Picture at the Blue Dragon Film Awards and was even remade in Japan. With <One Fine Spring Day> (2001), which carried on with the director’s resounding storytelling technique and display of controlled emotion that was the salient aspects of the director’s debut film, Hur received another Blue Dragon Award for Best Picture and cemented his position within the Korean industry as a capable director of melodramas. He extended his reach to Japan when his next film <April Snow>(2005), which starred Bae Yongjoon and Son Yejin,, became a box office hit on the archipelago. After <A Good Rain Knows> (2009), which cast Jung Woosung and the Chinese actress Gao Yuanyuan. Hur was offered the opportunity to film an adaptation of <Dangerous Liaisons> in China, with a cast comprising Jang Donggun, Zhang Ziyi and Cecilia Cheung. Stepping away from the camera, Hur also served as the director of the Jecheon International Music and Film Festival between 2013 and 2019. In 2016 he returned to the director’s chair to make the Colonial Era drama <The Last Princess>, reuniting with his <April Snow> star Son Yejin. After directing the short film <Two Lights: Relumino> (2017) and the medium-length film <The Present> (2019), which was released on YouTube, he made the period court drama <Forbidden Dream> (2019), about King Sejong’s scientific ambitions for the Joseon Kingdom, starring Han Sukkyu and Choi Minshik. In 2021, he moved to television and co-directed the drama series <Lost>, starring Jeon Doyeon and Ryu Junyeol.

Jeon Do Yeon in Talks to Star in the New Netflix Original Film ‘KILL Bok Soon’

According to media outlets, Jeon was offered the lead role in the new Netflix original film KILL Bok Soon. To which, her agency Management SOOP responded, “The actress is reviewing the offer.”

The role she was offered to play is the role of a “killer.” If she joins this upcoming Netflix original series, it will be her first collaboration with Netflix and her first action thriller film. Since the actress mostly showed her power in the drama genre, we can’t help but wonder how her unique color will melt into the action thriller.

In addition, The Merciless director Byun Sung Hyun will helm the production of KILL Bok Soon. The possible collaboration of the best actress, a successful director, and Netflix is already a hot topic.

The series is a special drama for JTBC’s 10th anniversary.

For the upcoming special series, JTBC rescheduled its current drama aired on Fridays-Saturdays, 11 p.m. to Saturdays-Sundays, 10:30 p.m.

Jeon Do-yeon, winner of the Best Actress prize in 2007 Cannes Film Festival with “Secret Sunshine”, is returning to the small screen after 5 years from her last TV series, “The Good Wife” (2016).

JTBC’s 10th-anniversary special, Lost, will premiere on September 4th.

Since JTBC has been reorganizing the broadcasting schedules since September, the series will air at 10:30 PM instead of 11:30 PM, which is when the Friday-Saturday dramas usually start.

Lost is a story about Boo Jung, a lost woman who hasn’t accomplished anything yet, and Kang Jae, a young guy who is scared because he might not become anyone successful before his youth fades away.

Joining hands with One Fine Spring Day and Christmas in August director Huh Jin Ho, the starstudded cast featuring Jeon Do Yeon, who is making a long-awaited drama comeback in 5 years, and Ryu Jun Yeol are garnering huge attention.

The first main poster, released on July 28th, captures the intricate inner mind of Boo Jung and Kang Jae in a single cut. Boo Jung, looking as if she is going to burst into tears, tells how much she has lost and how much she fears losing, and Kang Jae’s deep and lonely eyes shows his anxiety and despair. The phrase on the poster, “Where are we now?” raises curiosity by showing the terror and futility of her and him roaming aimlessly in the middle of life.

Jeon Do-yeon X Ryu Jun-yeol "No Longer Human" special poster is released

By Reporter Nang | 2021.08.18

  • [BBANGYA NEWS | Reporter Nang] "No Longer Human" gives a deep echo on the heartbreaking journey of two men and women seeking light in the dark.

spacer.png

JTBC's 10th anniversary special project "No Longer Human," which will be broadcast for the first time on September 4th, unveiled a special poster that overwhelms the atmosphere with deep emotions on the 18th.

"No Longer Human" tells the story of ordinary people who have been walking to the light as best they can, suddenly realizing that they have not become anything in their lives.

In the previous version of the main poster "Knowledge," the two men and women's fateful narratives, which are drawn from the boundary between empathy and compassion, drew attention.

The emotional synergy created by Jeon Do-yeon and Ryu Jun-yeol is the best point to watch. Jeon Do-yeon played the role of a ghostwriter "Boo-jung," who wanted to become a writer. Ryu Jun-yeol plays Kang-jae, a role-agent service operator who wants to become rich.

The production team of "No Longer Human" said, "The sense of loss that nothing has been done, the fear that nothing will be done, negation and steel that resemble each other, are the greatest consolation to each other. "It's a heartbreaking but warm work that allows you to feel the emotions of the two men and women who are changing through each other."

Director Huh Jin-ho, the master of Korean melodramatic films, who produced numerous masterpieces such as "Forbidden Dream | 천문," "Princess Deokhye | 덕혜옹주," "One Fine Spring Day | 봄날은 간다," and "Christmas in August | 8월의 크리스마스," and writer Kim Ji-hye from films "Wish | 소원," "My Love My Bride | ‘나의 사랑 나의 신부," and "Architecture 101 | 건축학개론."

Meanwhile, JTBC's 10th anniversary special project "No Longer Human" will premiere on September 4th at 10:30 p.m.

TV queens set to return to small screen in fall

By Kim Boram (brk@yna.co.kr) | August 20, 2021

SEOUL, Aug. 20 (Yonhap) -- The South Korean entertainment scene is expected to experience a heated-up competition this fall among breakout A-list celebrities who will return to the small screen after years of absence.

JTBC will open up the "star wars" with the melodrama "Lost," starring Cannes-winning Jeon Do-yeon, premiering on Sept. 4.

Choosing the show for her return to TV five years after "The Good Wife" (2016), Jeon will play a ghostwriter who has done her best but suddenly realizes her life is worthless and loses the will to live.

"Lost" has been also the talk of the town for being star film director Hur Jin-ho's small screen debut. He made a name for himself with melodramas including "One Fine Spring Day" (2001) and "Christmas in August" (1998).

In the comedy drama "Koo Kyung-yi," set to begin airing in October on JTBC, famous actress Lee Young-ae will take the title role of an insurance investigator. It is her first TV series since the historical romance "Saimdang, Memoir of Colors" (2017).

JTBC also has a star-studded lineup for the upcoming fall-winter season as "Crash Landing On You" (2019) star Son Ye-jin will come back with "Thirty-Nine" and Ko Hyun-jung will take a role in "Reflection of You."

Cable channel tvN will come out with the action thriller "Cliffhanger," starring Jun Ji-hyun and Ju Ji-hoon, in October.  Jun, whose last TV project was "Legend of the Blue Sea" (2016), will play a forest ranger in Mount Jiri National Park and experience mysterious incidents involving the mountain's visitors.  It is tvN's most anticipated project for 2021, thanks to its all-star cast and crew, including director Lee Eung-bok, who was behind several megahit TV series like "Descendants of the Sun" (2016) and "Guardian: The Lonely and Great God" (2016), and screenwriter Kim Eun-hee, who created the historical zombie thriller series "Kingdom" (2019) on Netflix.

SBS has cast actress Song Hye-kyo for its new romantic comedy "Now, We Are Breaking Up," expected to kick off in November.  Song will play the lead character, a cold-hearted realist designer at a fashion company. Expanded platforms call big-name film directors to small screen

By Kim Boram (brk@yna.co.kr) | August 24, 2021

SEOUL, Aug. 24 (Yonhap) -- As the entertainment horizon has been widened thanks to the advent of global streaming platforms, not only silver screen stars but also big-name film directors are making the switch to television or even smaller devices like mobile phones.

Director Lee Joon-ik of the historical dramas "The King and the Clown" (2005) and "The Throne" (2015) will make his small screen debut with "Beyond The Memory," an original series by Korean streamer Tving and a TV adaptation of a sci-fi romance novel titled "Good-Bye Yonder" by Kim Jang-hwan.  It is the first time that Lee, known as a master of period films, has turned his eye to a different genre on a different platform.

spacer.png
This photo, provided by Megabox Plus M, shows director Lee Joon-ik. (PHOTO NOT FOR SALE) (Yonhap)

Renowned film director Yeon Sang-ho of the global hit "Train to Busan" (2016) is also attempting the crossover experiment.  Yeon wrote the screenplay of the mystery horror "The Cursed" (2020) on tvN and is now directing a new Netflix original series "Hellbound," based on his web comics with the same title.  Starring rising silver screen stars Yoo Ah-in and Park Jung-min, Yeon's first TV production is expected to be released later this year.

The Netflix original thriller series "Finger" will be directed by Jung Ji-woo, who has earlier worked on big-screen projects, including "Tune in for Love" (2019) and "Eungyo" (2012). It is his first TV directing since he made his directorial debut with the melodramatic thriller "Happy End" in 1999.

Star film director Hur Jin-ho, who has made a name for himself with melodramas, including "One Fine Spring Day" (2001) and "Christmas in August" (1998), is also making a challenge on a different platform.  His upcoming melodrama "Lost" will premier on cable channel JTBC on Sept. 4, starring Cannes-winning actress Jeon Do-yeon.

spacer.png

Kim Jee-woon, who has taken been in charge of hit movies, including "The Age of Shadows" (2016) and "I Saw The Devil" (2010), will direct the webtoon-based sci-fi thriller "Dr. Brain," an Apple TV+ original.  He joined hands with "Parasite" star Lee Sun-kyun for his first small screen project.

Insiders said the influence of global streamers like Netflix, armed with bigger budgets, has been expanding on the local show business and consequently blurring the clear distinction of the formats. And the yearlong COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the trend.  But some doubt the success of the film directors' rush to the small screen as it is not easy for them to meet the different demands of TV drama fans.  Written and directed by Lee Byeong-heon of the mega-hit Korean comedy film "Extreme Job," the romantic comedy "Be Melodramatic" (2019) fell flat.  Director Lee Chang-hee, who made the psychological thriller "The Vanished" (2018), took the helm of OCN's "Strangers from Hell" (2019), a horror thriller drama based on the popular webtoon of the same title, but also failed to make its presence felt. Movie stars to return to small screen

By Lee Si-jin (sj_lee@heraldcorp.com) | Aug 25, 2021

“Lost” (JTBC)

South Korean movie stars are turning up on TV dramas in the second half of the year, spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic and the growing number of streaming platforms.  Many household names who have been mostly working in film are returning to the small screen after years of absence.  Lee Ha-nee and Cannes winner Jeon Do-yeon will kick off a season full of dramas starring big-screen actors.

Jeon is returning to TV for the first time since her 2015 hit tvN drama “The Good Wife.” The actor stars in JTBC’s upcoming romance drama “Lost” as a ghostwriter who loses the will to live.  The 16-part series will run every weekend starting Sept. 4.  Also joining “Lost” is actor Ryu Jun-yeol in his first TV role in five years. His most recent TV drama was MBC’s “Lucky Romance” (2016).

Lee, a former Miss Korea, stars in SBS’ new Friday-Saturday drama “One the Woman,” which is scheduled to start after the conclusion of SBS suspense drama series “Penthouse 3.”  The 16-episode drama will start Sept. 17.  “After 2 1/2 years, I am very excited and nervous to meet fans through a TV drama. With an amazingly funny script, I definitely enjoy shooting the show with other actors and the staff, so I hope the viewers will be able to wait just a little more to meet ‘One the Woman,’” an SBS press release quoted Lee as saying.

The well-known trio of Lee Jung-jae, Yoo Ah-in and Park Jeong-min is making a highly anticipated return to the small screen with the actors’ upcoming Netflix debuts.  Veteran actor Lee Jung-jae, whose last TV project was “Chief of Staff 2” (2019), stars as a player in a mystery survival game in Netflix’s “Squid Game,” which premieres Sept. 17.  Another Netflix original series, “Hellbound,” stars Yoo and Park, whose last TV appearances were on the tvN dramas “Chicago Typewriter” (2017) and “Entourage” (2016), respectively.

“Korean actors preferred to shoot films for various reasons, with the possibility of being nominated at international film festivals as one of them,” culture critic Kim Heon-sik said in a phone interview with The Korea Herald on Wednesday.  “As Netflix contents gain global attention, some of the Netflix original series are being invited to international film festivals, allowing actors to gain global recognition with a drama series,” Kim added.

Kim also sees the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic as having accelerated the trend.  “The strict social distancing guidelines are making it hard for the actors and the staff to shoot and premiere their works in cinemas. As COVID-19 continues, fans can expect to meet even more ‘movie stars’ on the small screen.”

Jeon Do-yeon says 'Lost' script made her cry

By Kwak Yeon-soo | 2021-09-03

Actress Jeon Do-yeon is returning to the small screen for the first time in five years through JTBC's "Lost." Her last appearance on television was playing the lead role in the 2016 drama "The Good Wife."

Directed by Hur Jin-ho, "Lost" tells the story of ordinary people who feel adrift in life and try to make their lives better.

Jeon plays the role of Bu-jung, a ghostwriter who feels like she hasn't achieved anything at the age of 40, while Ryu Jun-yeol appears as Kang-jae, who runs a company that rents fake family members, friends or romantic partners for money.

Hur, best known for directing the films "Christmas in August" and "The Last Princess," is making his first foray into a TV drama. Kim Ji-hye, the screenwriter for hit romance film "Architecture 101," penned the script.

The star director revealed that he had neither the courage nor the confidence to helm a TV series, but changed his mind after reading Kim's script.

"Even I didn't know I would be making a TV series. In contrast to a film that goes into production once the script is completed, a drama starts shooting while the script is still being written along the way. So, there were feelings of curiosity and frustration from time to time. It literally felt like making three to four films," Hur said during a press conference for the drama, Thursday.

Hur also shared his thoughts on the title of the series.

"Our drama evokes feelings of existential dread. It's a beautiful odyssey of loss ― material or emotional loss ― when people feel like they've failed to live up to their expectations and how they recover a sense of possibility," he said.

Jeon said she wanted to avoid dramas with dark or heavy subject matters, but "Lost" resonated deeply with her. Merely reading the script for the new series made her cry.

"When I finished reading the script, I was weeping. The story was a little bit dark, but I liked it anyway because it was about finding light in the darkness," she said. "When I said 'I'll do it,' I was asked a lot about how I as a well-known and successful actress will understand the feelings of a woman who has achieved nothing in life. But I was able to relate to Bu-jung's character."

Ryu, whose last TV drama role was in MBC's "Lucky Romance" in 2016, said it was an easy choice to star in "Lost."

"I didn't think twice because I've always looked forward to working together with director Hur and actress Jeon," he said. The 35-year-old actor explained that his character Kang-jae differs from other characters in coming-of-age stories.

"Throughout the story, Kang-jae doubts himself and realizes that his deeply held beliefs may just be wrong. I wanted to express his bitter feelings of loneliness."

"Lost" airs on Saturdays and Sundays at 10:30 p.m. (KST).

Star filmmakers head to small screen

By Lee Gyu-lee | 2021-09-05

A growing number of filmmakers are choosing to direct dramas on the small screen due to the expansion of Over The Top (OTT) services resulting from the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the movie industry.

Director Hur Jin-ho, who is known for leading romance films "Christmas in August" and period film "Forbidden Dream," made his TV directorial debut with JTBC's new melodrama, "Lost," which started its run, Saturday.  The melodrama, starring Cannes award-winning actress Jeon Do-yeon and actor Ryu Jun-yeol, got off to a good start with a 4.2 percent viewership rating. It follows the story of two ordinary people who feel adrift in life and encounter each other making their lives better.

The director revealed that he had not expected to direct a TV series.  "I changed my mind to work up the courage to make it after reading such a good script… unlike movies, which start production after the script is completed, dramas start shooting as the script is still being written," Hur said during the series' press conference, last week.  "So, there were feelings of curiosity and frustration from time to time. Even though it literally felt like making three to four films, it was worth it," he added.

Other star directors ― such as "Miss Granny" and "Silenced" director Hwang Dong-hyuk, "Nameless Gangster" and "Kundo" director Yoon Jong-bin and "Coin Locker Girl" and "Hit-And-Run Squad" director Han Jun-hee ― are taking their first stab at helming a series with Netflix.

Hwang's upcoming series, "Squid Game," which is one of this year's most anticipated series, will hit the streaming site on Sept. 17.   The suspense action series, starring Lee Jung-jae and Park Hae-soo, is about a deadly high stakes round of children's games that invite cash-strapped players to play life-or-death challenges for an enormous prize.

Yoon is helming a star-studded cast series, "Suriname," which stars Ha Jung-woo, Hwang Jung-min, and Yoo Yeon-seok. The crime series, based on a true story, revolves around a man who rose to become a drug lord in Suriname, a former Dutch colony on the northern coast of South America.

Han launched "D.P." on Aug. 27, topping Netflix's top 10 list for about a week. The dark drama, starring Jung Hae-in and Koo Kyo-hwan, follows a young private in the military who is assigned to capture deserting soldiers and encounters the painful reality behind compulsory military duty.

Director Yeon Sang-ho, who won global fame through zombie flicks "Train to Busan" and "Peninsula," will be releasing his second series, "Hellbound," since his first drama, "The Cursed," last year.  The fantasy thriller series is the drama adaptation of the web-comic of the same name, co-created by Yeon and Choi Gyu-seok in 2019. It tells the story of a chaotic society where supernatural beings make judgments to condemn people to hell. A group of people ― played by Yoo Ah-in and Park Jeong-min ― try to fight against a religious group that follows the supernatural beings as their divine deity.

Viewership for star-studded 'Lost' plummets over 'unconvincing story'

By Lee Gyu-lee | 2021-10-03

JTBC's melodrama series, "Lost," starring award-winning actress Jeon Do-yeon and actor Ryu Jun-yeol, has hit its lowest viewership rating so far with the latest episode, Saturday.

The ninth episode saw a 1.2 percent viewership rating, which was lower than last week's record low of 1.4 percent.

The network's 10th-anniversary project series had been highly anticipated by K-drama fans for its cast members and director. This series was the first small-screen appearance for actress Jeon in five years as well as the first TV series directed by filmmaker Hur Jin-ho, who is known for the leading period film, "Forbidden Dream" (2019), along with romance films "Christmas in August" (1998) and "April Snow" (2005).

The first episode kicked off with a 4.2-percent rating on Sept. 4. However, the ratings soon took a nosedive, falling below 2 percent by the fifth episode.

Written by Kim Ji-hye, whose works include romance movies, "My Love, My Bride" (2014) and "Architecture 101" (2012), the series follows the story of two people who feel adrift in life and encounter each other, making their lives better.

Bu-jung (Jeon), who once dreamed of becoming a good writer, is a ghostwriter living with her husband. Nothing ever worked out for her in life and she even loses her job as a ghostwriter. She starts to work as a house cleaner, but tries to keep it a secret from her family.

One day, she encounters handsome gigolo Kang-jae (Ryu), who runs a service for renting out family members, friends or romantic partners, in order to make a living. The two are attracted by the feelings of loneliness and emptiness reflected in each other.

Scenes from "Lost" / Korea Times file

The series, which closely follows the emotions of the actors, appears to have lost its charm due to a depressing, slow-paced storyline and the unconvincing subplots involving the characters.

"The biggest problem with 'Lost' is that I can't empathize with the lead character Bu-jung," a user wrote on an online community forum. "It just feels like too much self-pity and it's too depressing."

Another user wrote, "The series doesn't have a strong backstory or subplots to make it convincing enough for viewers to understand the characters and their emptiness… so it's hard for us to resonate with them and the plot."

Some viewers even pointed out problems with Ryu's performance as a player who has irresistible charm with a broody aura. His portrayal of the multi-layered character with complex emotions failed to win the viewers' hearts.

Director Hur revealed during a press conference in early September that taking on the series to direct has been a challenge for him.

"I changed my mind to work up the courage to try it after reading such a good script," he said. "Unlike movies, which start production after the script is completed, dramas start shooting as the scripts are still being written. So, there were feelings of curiosity and frustration from time to time. It literally felt like making three to four films at once."

"Lost" airs on JTBC every Saturday and Sunday at 10:30 p.m.

'Lost' actors share their thoughts on series' wrap

By Lee Gyu-lee | 2021-10-25

Actors Jeon Do-yeon and Ryu Jun-yeol from JTBC's melodrama "Lost" have shared their emotions and a behind-the-scenes look after the series ended its 16-part run, Sunday.

"It feels like I have regrets every time I finish a project. I couldn't picture this series coming to an end, so I would always think to myself how hard it has been to live in this character. But now I think of it, that was just whining," said award-winning actress Jeon, who played the lead character, Bu-jung.

"I want to express my gratitude toward everyone who has been with me through this. I will continue to do my best to become good at acting."

The romance series kicked off with a 4.2 percent viewership rating Sept. 4 with high hopes as it starred popular actors and was the first series directed by famous filmmaker Hur Jin-ho, who is known for the leading period piece "Forbidden Dream" (2019) and the romance "Christmas in August" (1998).

However, the series soon felt short of viewers' anticipation, slipping down the slope with its viewership and recording a 1.7 percent rating by the fifth episode. Its last episode Sunday saw a 2.4 percent rating.

Written by Kim Ji-hye, who was behind the hit romance movie "Architecture 101" (2012), the series follows two people ― ghostwriter Bu-jung and attractive gigolo Kang-jae (Ryu) ― who feel adrift in life, seeking comfort in each other to find purpose in life.

spacer.png
Scenes from 'Lost' / Courtesy of JTBC

Ryu expressed his affection towards the series, saying he did not want to let go of the character or the series.

"Kang-jae is a very typical man in his 20s. Some might say his life has gone astray but he also had problems that any other people in their 20s could have and would endlessly strive to solve them," he said. "Under few circumstances, like his family issue, he goes through suffering which makes his life different from how I spent my 20s… so those differences drew me toward the character."

He added that although many viewers might not have agreed with his way of making a living, he tried to get them to resonate with his journey through realizing it himself.

"I didn't want to glamorize his job or life. But I just studied my character with a focus on how I can portray him in a way that viewers can empathize with in his journey of finding himself and opening up to the world," he said.

Mentioning the feedback on the slow-paced series, the actor said he took in both the compliments and criticism.

"As we were making the series, we understood the issue of it and went forward, having a lot of thoughts. But to those who have been waiting for series like this, I think this series would be like an oasis," he said. "The story was not fast-paced nor did it have a lot of things going on with the plot. But when you closely follow the story of the characters, Lost offers a chance to think about life and death and about what it means to be human."
