Kim So-yeon, who was practicing the scene in which she looked in the mirror, continued her practice over and over again, asking for her advice with questions with overflowing passion. Director Joo Dong-min praised her passion for Kim So-yeon, saying, "(Kim So-yeon) constantly thinks and practices constantly."

Then, the rehearsal began in line with the sound of director Joo Dong-min's action. Despite her rehearsal, Kim So-yeon was immersed in her acting and painted her face full of lipstick, and director Joo Dong-min was surprised to see such a Kim So-yeon. To director Joo Dong-min, who was worried, "(It's her rehearsal), was she really putting lipstick on her face?"

As her filming began, Kim So-yeon, who stood in front of her camera, surprised everyone with her crazy acting. When her performance of Kim So-yeon was finished, director Joo Dong-min admired her, saying, "Of course," and "There are very few actors like that in our country." Even the 'Penthouse' actors, who were watching this scene with monitors in the studio, applauded and moved, raising expectations for 'All Viewers+: Short Buster' episode 3 and director Dong-Min Joo's short film 'It's Alright'. .

I like the pictures released by J Wide Company from the Marie Claire pictorial. I like them better then the pictorial itself, especially behind the scene, where she is not posing for the photoshoot. :)

Actress Kim So-yeon was interviewed for the 17th anniversary of 'Sports Trend'.

Nice. I can`t wait to read the interview.

*****

Kim So-yeon debuted 28 years ago. A lot has changed in the drama scene he has been working on since the mid-1990s. There are many things that you can feel, such as not only the age and career of the staff, but also the shooting system, management of actors, meeting with fans, and worldwide response. Above all, the size of the drama that becomes a masterpiece through various narratives, characters, and computer graphics (CG) work is different.

In such a time, Kim So-yeon was one of the actors who first felt the power of the Korean Wave in the mid-1990s, the first heyday of the Korean Wave in the 2000s, and the power of 'K-content' that emerged from the late 2010s. Kim So-yeon, who has played a lot of roles for 28 years, clearly has a part in it that feels the progenitor of Korean dramas.

[Founding Interview ①] ‘K-Drama’ Queen Kim So-yeon “It was a touching target, I feel a sense of responsibility”

AAXlCi1.img?w=700&h=978&m=6&x=186&y=261&

Interviews with her always have this resonance. Although she is an actress and I am a journalist, I always want to learn about her passionate attitude towards life and her humble attitude towards those around her. This is also the attitude that 'sports trend' should always keep as a medium for dealing with the public. Last year's SBS Acting Grand Prize, actress Kim So-yeon, who had clearly focused on 28 years of her acting life, sat down with the excuse of the 17th anniversary of the founding.

■ Looking back, the distant ‘target’

December 31st of last year is a day that Kim So-yeon will not forget not only as an actress but also in her life. She won the Grand Prize for her acting role as Seojin Cheon in the drama 'Penthouse', where she hung out for 1 year and 6 months. Of course, she has a history of winning the grand prize at the ‘Korea Drama Awards’ for MBC’s ‘Happy Home’ in 2016, but she was the first to finish the year.

She said, “I remember I burst into tears for five minutes after hearing that I got Daesang. When I first started acting, the memories came from when I rode the bus, finished provincial shoots, and returned to Seoul at dawn to wait forthe first car. I remember being very grateful for the warm encouragement and support from those around me. I really wanted something like this to happen in my life.”

It was her husband Lee Sang-woo who realized the weight of the target and cried with her. On the day of her awards ceremony, Kim So-yeon, who ate only tofu all day to keep her body in shape, was finally able to go home and have dinner with her husband. Lee Sang-woo's eyes, who ripped her LA ribs together, were also bloodshot from tears. He is a target, but he cannot but be moved by it. One word from Lee Sang-woo cleared Kim So-yeon's mind.

AAXlUhJ.img?w=700&h=551&m=6&x=408&y=150&

“(Sangwoo) Oppa was like that. ‘Soyeon-ah, December 31 has already passed. Today is January 1st. Forget everything.” I feel so moved together, but because there is someone who can help me with my emotions, even though it is a big deal in my life, I think I can forget everything and start anew.”

Kim So-yeon is currently in the midst of filming for tvN's 'Gumiho 1938', which is scheduled to air next year. It is a sequel to 'Gumiho', which aired in 2020. This time, it will show a new world set in 1938. Filming itself has been postponed due to COVID-19, and post-production is also required. Kim So-yeon is shining her eyes again, saying that she has fallen into a new genre and a new character. After she received the grand prize, she wanted to rest, but she also rushed to the scene due to her acting greed.

She said, “In my acting life, I went through all the good times and the bad times, so even when exciting situations arise, I am not excited about it. Also, if you do this and show your insufficiency, you feel as if the things you have built up so far will be in vain. I feel like I have more responsibility this year. I was also called an older senior. I have a strong desire to show a better image in terms of attitude and other aspects. When I was young, my teachers were surprised at ‘how can you not give NG like that’, but I think that all of them set a good example. I am learning that mindset.”

K-drama queen Kim So-yeon: “I will play a villain again if I can become an actress like Lee Hye-young”

Kim So-yeon talked about the power of K-drama in an interview marking the 17th anniversary of the founding of Sports Trends.

It’s been 28 years since Kim So-yeon debuted. Many things have changed in the drama scene which she has been working in since the mid-1990s. She has seen many changes in the industry, not just the age and career of the staff, but also the filming system, the actor management system, the meeting with fans, and the global response. Above all, through various narratives, characters, and computer graphics (CG) works, the size of dramas that are considered masterpieces is also different.

During such a time, Kim So-yeon was one of the actors who clearly felt the power of K-content at the forefront, which arose from the beginning of the Korean Wave in the mid-1990s, to its first heyday in the 2000s, and the fast development in the late 2010s era. Kim So-yeon, who has played a lot of roles over 28 years, clearly feels the archetypal nature of Korean dramas.

■ K-drama has “Han” – the Korean’s way of describing a mixed emotion of grief, anger, sorrow, regret

“Our country’s dramas focus on stories. We focus on the narrative, but I think the emotional aspect is also important. In particular, we have the sentiment of ‘Han’, which seems to be a unique aspect of Korean dramas that other dramas can’t follow.”

In the OTT market, which has been developing since the beginning of the pandemic, Kim So-yeon sees the rise of Korean dramas as a positive sign, which led to the rise in her desire to throw herself into a new role on the screen. In particular, her marriage to her husband Lee Sang-woo, who has helped her with both physical and mental aspects since 2017 and introduced her to many new aspects as an actress by watching many works together, has been a great help to Kim So-yeon.

“I enjoyed ‘Game of Thrones’ recently, and I first found out through Sang-woo that I have a preference in the fantasy genre. I’ve been acting all this time, but I was so happy to realize that I had a lot of more acting to re-challenge. I really enjoyed watching works on OTT platforms such as “Squid Game,” “All Of Us Are Dead” and “Hellbound.” It has become my new dream to play an original character in an OTT work.”

In the past, there were times when I mainly paid attention to how many times my name appeared in the opening title and what kind of role I played. But now, when I choose a new script, I only focus on my character. In fact, even in the case of SBS’s “Penthouse,” there were times when it was unclear whether my character Chun Seo-jin would be in the center of the play as she does now. With Kim So-yeon’s enthusiastic performance, Cheon Seo-jin’s narrative grew in “Penthouse” seasons 2 and 3, and eventually grew into an essential element of the drama.

57a811cbbe8ddffed67e5c53490537e819d69b7f

“The same goes for the villain roles. When I played the role of Cheon Seo-jin, many people had said, “Where can I find a villain who is worse than that?” But I think even the different villains has different meanings. Recently, I saw Lee Hye-young on “Kill Hill”. If I can act like her when I’m older, I want to play that kind of role as well. I think the way you see acting will change when you get older.”

She started acting at a young age and gained great popularity as a teenager, but she was misunderstood due to her villain image in her 20s and suffered from the identity of her acting skills. However, Kim So-yeon learned how to let go of herself in her 30s, and is finally feeling the true taste of acting in her 40s.

“I want to remain an actress who never stops trying. I will always try not to disappoint people who are constantly watching me no matter if I’m doing well or not. My priorities as an actress may change someday, but I want to be an actress who does my part until the end.”

Kim So-yeon moving forward

Marie Claire May issue pictorial and interview with actress Kim So-yeon

Kim So-yeon is her fear accepting her as a part of herself

Carefully towards her new challenge

She is taking it one step at a time.

mck_6272275c5c663-scaled.jpg

mck_627226fa4bed8-scaled.jpg

It's been a while since the show ended, but I can't help but talk about the drama <Penthouse>. It is also the work that gave the acting grand prize at last year's year-end awards ceremony. I still feel shy when I hear the word acting. It's a big thing in my acting life, but it's amazingly big that I won a big award, so nothing has changed. The name of the award was so great that I cried a lot the day I received it. But from the next day on, everything was just the same as before. However, it is to the extent that I have a feeling that something like this can happen even if I did my best. <Penthouse> is a work that I am grateful for that allowed me to challenge myself in acting.

When I put off the character of ‘Chun Seo-jin’ in the filmography that actress Kim So-yeon had accumulated up to then, I thought that she was an unexpected choice. She always wanted to play a creepy villain someday. When I was thinking about whether I would be able to portray this villain well or not, I met the writer and made up my mind, and after reading the script, I felt like my heart was burning. My heart was racing. Cheon Seo-jin as a child appears at the end of part 1, and I definitely wanted to act that scene myself. Thanks to the director's coordination of various elements, instead of using a child actor, I was able to play young Seo-jin Cheon, and I felt very good while filming. That was just about this time two years ago.

What is the attraction of a villain to an actor? As an actor, the range that a villain can express as an actor is enormous. The amplification of emotions is great, and I thought that I could be a little more free to express myself. Even when I was playing the villain in the drama <All About Eve>, I don't think I was aware of this. At that time, on the day of the filming, I thought more that I had to move on without being a nuisance to the team. After that, watching the performances of other actors who played villains, I wondered why I had spared those expressions. Such feelings piled up one after another, and while doing <Penthouse>, I expressed the amplification of emotions to my heart's content.

It must have been a lot of emotional exhaustion while acting. After the project, the most frequently asked question is, ‘Was it difficult?’. But I really didn't find it that hard. It was rather enjoyable. There were many difficult scenes, but the director created an environment that allowed me to act courageously in every moment the camera turned. At the beginning of the season, of course, I was nervous, but after that, it was a very exciting time to act.

Do you have any memories of the shooting site that come to mind today? Well… I do not know. Actually, I'm preparing for the 2nd season of the drama <Gumiho>, so I'm trying to empty myself a lot. The character ‘Ryu Hong-ju’ that I play in this work is one of the mountain gods who rule the Korean Peninsula. After all, she's not a casual person. So I'm afraid that even the slightest resemblance to the character's eyes or tone of voice will come out. When I was acting as Cheon Seo-jin, I was acting with the intention of showing everything, so I think the burden on the next project is greater.

mck_6272274c38166-scaled.jpg

Spoiler

mck_627226e9e0a28-scaled.jpg

So far, all of the works chosen by actress Kim So-yeon felt like they were in touch with reality. From that point of view, < Gumiho> seems to be an unexpected choice for her. I never expected to receive an offer to appear in the fantasy genre (laughs). I really like anime as well as comic books. After I finished <Penthouse>, I was offered the role of <Gumiho>. At first, there were factors to worry about, but I wondered if it was now or when would I be able to meet such an attractive character.

What were you worried about? I was worried if I would enter the work and create a sense of alienation or awkwardness. When I read the script, I thought that I could do well. I had a script reading a while ago, and thanks to everyone working together in the last season, the atmosphere was very warm. I was grateful that I could be part of it.

What kind of homework does Ryu Hong-ju pose as an actor? When I appeared in <Penthouse>, I thought that I wanted to make my acting a little bit unique. When the director first met, he asked me to research how to express the lines in a different way. That story stuck in my mind. Thanks to that, I was able to act with an open mind. I am also looking forward to being able to show various aspects of myself as an actor in <Gumiho 2>.

For an actor, it may not be easy at the moment to choose each work. Do you tend to choose with confidence? Whatever the subject of choice, I tend to worry a lot. If there's only one thing you don't hesitate to choose, is it to the extent of choosing a latte at once when you order coffee? (Laughs)Thanks to (Lee) Sang-woo oppa, I gained more courage. Even in <Penthouse>, I had to see the writer before deciding to appear, but somehow I was hesitant because I was a bit shy. But Sangwoo oppa gave me courage, saying that it would be fun just to meet and have a conversation. I came to realize that if I avoid the challenge because I am afraid, I will inevitably miss out on a good opportunity. Everyone hesitates at the moment of challenge, but if you overcome that hesitation, you can make a better choice.

Right. The older I get, the more I want to choose the familiar rather than the new. <Gumiho2> is definitely a challenge for me too. I am deeply grateful that this opportunity has come to me. I'm not sure how long I'll be able to use the word challenge. So I think I've been trying to challenge myself with more courage these days. There's no time to be afraid. Now I think I can have faith in myself. In the past, there were times when I hesitated to make a choice because of my insecurity. I thought a lot about whether I could do well or if I could do well and help the people I work with. But now, I think it will definitely be fun to do this work. My perspective on art has changed a bit. It may change again someday, but these days, I always want to try new things. There are so many things that can't be done without now. I try to treat each day with respect and make a choice.

What keeps you from choosing new things? I usually like to be lazy. I can't be that happy on a day when I have nothing to do. But strangely, I want to keep doing my work. I want to find works and read the synopsis. I still feel awkward and scared at the beginning when I go to the filming site, but I like the scene so much that it is amazing. I am also grateful that I have made a career that I love so much.

Spoiler

mck_62722a57ae4b4.jpg

mck_62722add9d11e-scaled.jpg

Is there any reason to keep working without getting tired? There was a time when I thought that there was nothing more I could do. I thought I did my best. I thought that life would be happy if I did my best in the given role, and when I was having a break, I enjoyed spending time with my husband. But after I did the drama <My Most Beautiful Daughter in the World>, it changed. The teachers who acted together in that drama practice a lot. Even though they have so many years of experience, they prepared a lot. I reflect on myself, who is not settling in, and I have a desire to become like the teachers. I realized that the best I thought was not the best.

Ever since you started acting, did you have any desire to act for a long time? As I've been acting for a long time, I sometimes feel that I'm not good enough, and that fact can be very stressful at times. But even the moment I feel fear while preparing for a work from someday, I am happy and excited. I'm a naturally anxious person, so I've come to accept that it's natural to be afraid no matter what I choose. Worry seems to have become a kind of routine. Worry is a hobby. (Laughs) Now, I started to think about how great it would be if I could do this for a long time.

As an actor, what season do you think you are going through now? Late spring It's just today's season. My new challenge has begun, and I want to do work that will be a challenge in the future. Right before the filming of <Gumiho>, it seems like you are standing in line at the entrance of the amusement park. I can't wait to see how much fun you'll have in it.

On the 23rd, on the YouTube channel Marie Claire Korea, a video titled 'How Kim So-yeon accepts her opposite character' was posted.

When asked, "How do you interpret and immerse yourself in a character that is different from mine," Kim So-yeon said, "When I think of 'Penthouse', that role is a character that cannot be similar to anyone else's. Why are you like this?', 'Why are you so different from me?' I think I was trying to avoid thinking like this. For this role, I tried to understand rather than understand."

Regarding tips, she said, "I tend to write autobiography. How this friend spent his childhood, what kind of friends he made, how he was loved by his mother and father, what kind of friends he met and what experiences he experienced, etc. Kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, etc. From high school to adulthood, it is the first thing I do (thinking and writing down each of my age groups) before starting a project.”

She added, "I always start approaching it from kindergarten, and when I write an autobiography like that, at some point, I naturally understand and immerse myself in the character."

As a way to overcome the 'no-jam period', she said, "It is a period that comes to me often as well. There is always a lethargy in daily life. One of the things I am practicing these days is this morning, too, when I am too bothered to get out of bed. If you woke up in the city, you try to challenge yourself with the small goal of waking up at 9:55 today. When you achieve your goal, you get a very small sense of accomplishment. Praise yourself and say, 'It was better than yesterday.' Moving on like this. If you look at it, the boredom period and lethargy might decrease little by little.”

Kim So-yeon said, "I think the important thing is to give myself a compliment and a gift as a good way. When I was too bothered and didn't want to do it, I dropped a little diligence and bought perfume when I thought, 'I worked hard, this was good.' “I have to do better,” she said.

When asked for advice on how to convey one's story without being hurt by a friend, she said, "I'm always worried that my friend might feel offended when I express my opinion accurately, so I tend to get stress rather than stress when conveying such things. The way to do it is to write a handwritten letter. If you meet and talk directly, your heart will beat faster, your words will become faster, and you may have to say things you shouldn't, but writing a handwritten letter will also organize your mind. It seems," she said of her experience.
