Late Korean actor Kang Soo-youn’s funeral was held Wednesday at Samsung Medical Center’s funeral hall in southern Seoul. Kang died of a cerebral hemorrhage on Saturday. She was 55.

Dozens of Kang’s colleagues in the movie industry attended the ceremony. Film directors Im Kwon-taek and Yeon Sang-ho, actors Seol Kyung-gu and Moon So-ri as well as Kim Dong-ho, founder and former chairman of the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), gave speeches in commemoration of their friend and colleague. From 2015 to 2017, Kang served as co-executive director of BIFF.

“We are here today with truly bitter hearts,” said Kim. Also in attendance were filmmakers Lee Woo-suk, Chung Ji-young and Jung Jin-woo and actors Kim Ji-mi, Park Jeong-ja, Park Joong-hoon, Son Suk and Ahn Sung-ki.

“She was a star of the Busan International Film Festival. She never missed a year. She wore the crown of a world star at a young age and lived a great life to protect that crown,” Kim added.

“We were all so happy to see her back on the big screen,” he continued. “No one imagined that it would be her last.”

After taking a nine-year break, Kang recently returned to the movie industry with "Jung_E," a Netflix film directed by Yeon that wrapped filming in January.

Actor Moon read her speech through tears. She said the “world of movies may not exist on this earth” and that Kang will be able to meet all the late film stars in heaven and can have all the fun there making a new film.

Kang was cremated and her remains were taken to Yongin Memorial Park in Gyeonggi.

Claudia Kim (Kim Soo Hyun) and Hong Ye Ji are reportedly joining director Hur Jin Ho’s new movie The Dinner (literal title).

According to JTBC News, multiple sources have revealed that Claudia Kim and Hong Ye Ji were cast in The Dinner. The Dinner revolves around the two brothers and their families as they stand at the crossroads between covering up and turning themselves in after their kids cause an accident that involves a homeless man.

After making a splendid big-screen debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Claudia Kim has only appeared in American movies including The Dark Tower and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. So The Dinner marks the actress’s debut in Korean cinema, heightening expectations.

Claudia Kim will play Sol Kyung Gu’s wife. Earlier, Sol Kyung Gu and Jang Dong Gun joined the production as the two brothers, and Kim Hee Ae will be playing Jang Dong Gun’s wife.

Joining the cast as Claudia Kim and Sol Kyung Gu’s troublemaking daughter is 2037 star Hong Ye Ji. The actress had beat out 400 other hopefuls for the lead role and received favorable reviews for her solid performance. In The Dinner, Hong Ye Ji will play the problematic daughter who is at the center of all incidents. If she played an unfairly treated victim in 2037, she would turn into a vicious perpetrator in The Dinner.

Meanwhile, The Dinner comes from director Hur Jin Ho, who helmed his first TV series Lost after the success of the 2019 movie Forbidden Dream.

SEOUL, July 7 (Yonhap) -- The 26th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN), South Korea's largest annual genre film festival, kicked off Thursday in Bucheon, just west of Seoul, featuring 268 films from 49 countries around the world.

This year's BIFAN will run till July 17 under the theme "Stay Strange" with 80 films, including 23 features, having their world premiers. All invited titles will be screened at five local venues, as well as on the Korean online streaming platform Wavve during the period.

The opening ceremony of this year's event was held in-person at the lawn square of Bucheon City Hall for the first time after two pandemic-disrupted years.

The horror film "Men" by English filmmaker Alex Garland will open the 26th edition of BIFAN, while the closing film is Korean director Jung Bum-shik's thriller "New Normal."

Ten films will compete in the Bucheon Choice for international features, including the horror "Alien Artist" by Japanese director Seiyo Hoya, the Indonesian horror "The Womb" by Fajar Nugros and "You Won't Be Alone" by Goran Stolevski from Australia.

In the competitive Bucheon Choice section for shorts, 10 works are listed, including "Bird Woman" by Tokio Oohara, "Perfect City: The Mother" by Zhou Shengwei and "Moshari" by Nuhash Humayun.

Ten flicks, including "Body Parts," "A Good Boy," "Mind Universe" and "The Woman in the White Car," will vie for the prize in the Korean Fantastic section.

Actor Seol Kyung-ku will decorate the festival's special silver-screen star section. His seven best movies, which include "Peppermint Candy" (1999), "Oasis" (2002), "Silmido" (2003) and "The Merciless" (2017), will be shown.

Last year's BIFAN was held in a hybrid format in the midst of the pandemic, with 257 films from 47 countries screened. (END)

CJ ENM Launches ‘The Boys’ and ‘Hero’ at Busan Market

By Rebecca Souw | Oct 7, 2022 12:01am PT

“The Boys” | CJ ENM.

CJ ENM, which includes Korea’s largest film producer and distributor, is using the Asian Contents & Film Market this week to launch a handful of new titles while basking in its recent box office and festival successes.

“The Boys” gets its premiere as a special screening withing the Busan International Film Festival’s expanded Korean Cinema Today section. This crime drama delves into the lives of three teenage boys, falsely accused and jailed for a brutal robbery-murder case. Fifteen years later, they seek a retrial in a bid to prove their innocence.

The veteran cast line-up includes Seol Kyung Gu (“Kingmaker”), Yu Jun Sang (“Along With The Gods: Two Worlds”), Jin Kyung (“Beasts Clawing At Straws”), Heo Sung Tae (“Hunt,” “Squid Game”) and Yeom Hye Ran (“Special Delivery”). “The Boys” was directed by Chung Ji Young, whose notable works include “National Security” and “Black Money.”

History has proven freedom comes at a price. Set in Korea in the early 1900s during the Japanese colonial period, director JK Youn’s “Hero” tells the story of a Korean independence activist in a fight to free his motherland. The film portrays his final days through music and song and stars musical actor Chung Sung Hwa and Kim Go Eun (best known in TV series, “Guardian: The Lonely and Great God” and “Yumi’s Cells”).

Keeping to the historical theme, with the setting in 1933 is action-espionage film, “Phantom.” A secret agent, part of a Japanese colonization resistance movement group known as “Phantoms,” is tasked with assassinating the Governor-General and must outwit a trap set with four other suspects in a secluded mansion. The story is told within a single day. It is directed by Lee Hae-young (“Believer”) and stars Sul Kyung Gu, Lee Hanee, Park So Dam and Park Hae Soo.

The company is also looking to do some final deals on two of nits biggest commercial hits from this year.
The North-South Korean cop buddies reunite for a second time in “Confidential Assignment 2: International.” The North Korean detective (played by Hyun Bin) joins forces with his South Korean counterpart (played by Yoo Hai Jin) and a US FBI agent (played by Daniel Henney) in another confidential mission. The film was released in Korean theaters on Sept. 7, 2022 and has clocked up over 6 million admissions.

Its “Alienoid” released in July is a sic-fi-historical-fantasy directed Choi Dong-hoon (“Assassination”). The all-star ensemble cast includes Ryu Jun-yeol (“The Battle: Roar to Victory”), Kim Woo-bin (“Master”), Kim Tae-ri (“Space Sweepers”) and So Ji-sub (“Confession”).

CJ previously announced that it had struck huge numbers of deals on “Broker” and “Decision to Leave,” its two art-house titles that appeared in competition in Cannes in May. “Decision” earned Park Chan-wook the best director award and is now set as Korea’s contender for the Oscars.

‘THE DINNER’

Korea’s Finecut is launching international sales on two Korean remakes at the Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM): Secret: Untold Melody, based on Jay Chou’s Taiwanese hit Secret, and The Dinner, an adaptation of Herman Koch’s bestselling novel.

The Dinner has been adapted in three other countries, including Oren Moverman’s US version, which premiered in competition at the Berlinale in 2017 and starred Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Steve Coogan and Rebecca Hall. This will be its first adaptation in Asia.

Both Secret: Untold Melody and The Dinner are produced by Hive Media Corp, the Seoul-based production company whose credits include Inside Men and Deliver Us From Evil.

Secret: Untold Melody is a time-travel romance that follows a promising pianist and a mysterious music student who meet each other in an old practice room with a hidden secret.  Directed by Seo You-min (Recalled), the film stars Doh Kyung-soo (Swing Kids) – also known as D.O. from K-pop group EXO – and Won Jin-a from Netflix series Hellbound. It is in post-production. The 2007 original won the outstanding Taiwanese film of the year at the Golden Horse Awards.

Black comedy drama The Dinner follows the dilemma and irony of two well-to-do families who face crimes committed by their children.  Directed by Hur Jin-ho (Christmas In August), the cast includes Seol Kyung-gu (Oasis), Claudia Kim (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald), Jang Dong-gun (V.I.P.) and Kim Hee-ae (Moonlit Winter).  Director of cinematography Go Rak-sun, whose credits include A Taxi Driver, is also attached. The film is set to begin post-production, aiming for 2023 release.

‘The Dinner’ | Hive Media

Korean sales agent Finecut has added “Secret: Untold Melody” and “The Dinner” to its burgeoning Asian Contents & Film Market slate. Both titles are sourced from a deal with Hive Media Corp. (“Inside Men,” “The Man Standing Next”).

An adaptation of 2007 Taiwan hit “Secret,” “Secret: Untold Melody” is a romance film about pianist and a student. While the original film starred Jay Chou and Gwei Lun-mei, the Korean retread stars Doh Kyung-soo (a.k.a D.O. from celebrated K-pop group EXO) who has acting credits including “Swing Kids” and the “Along With The Gods” franchise, and rising star Won Jin-a (“Netflix’s “Hellbound”). Now in post-production, the film is directed by Seo You-min (“Recalled”).

Black comedy, “The Dinner” is the first Asian adaptation of the Herman Koch bestselling novel of the same name that skewers the middle classes in a tale of two families whose children have committed crimes. It has previously been produced as films in the U.S., Italy and The Netherlands.

Hur Jin-ho (“Christmas in August”) directs a cast that includes Seol Kyung-gu “The Merciless”), Claudia Kim (“Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald” and “The Avengers: Age Of Ultron”), Jang Dong-gun (“The Rampant”) and Kim Hee-ae (TV’s The World of the Married”). The film is also in post-production.

Finecut is also handling rights on “Greenhouse,” which will play this week in the Busan International Film Festival’s Vision section. Directed by Lee Sol-huithe film tracks the pain and suffering of a woman who suffers a psychological disorder.

Finecut comes to the Busan market fresh from Toronto and San Sebastian, where it debuted Hong Sangsoo’s “Walk Up.”

5 Must-watch Korean Films at the 27th BIFF with Full of Audiences in 3 Years

by Hellen Park | Oct 11, 2022

From a Veteran Director’s Social Critical Film to New Directors’ Amazing Debut Films

The 27th Busan International Film Festival, the largest film festival in Asia, opened on Oct. 5 and is in its middle stages. This year, the film festival's goal of holding a ‘normal film festival in every way’ in 3 years after the COVID-19 Pandemic seems to be successful. The theaters, which use all seats without distancing, have been enjoying sellouts every single day, and the audience filling the seats and the filmmakers visiting Busan are actively meeting through many events.

The 27th Busan International Film Festival will screen a total of 354 films (243 official invitations from 71 countries and 111 films for Community BIFF Screenings) until the 14th. Among them, we introduce 5 anticipated Korean films that receive hot attention at BIFF this year.

20 Century Girl, the Splendid First Love Film by New Director Bang Woori

Yeondu (Noh Yoonseo) asks her best friend Bora (Kim Youjung) to collect all the information she can about Baek Hyunjin (Park Jungwoo) while she is away in the U.S. for heart surgery. Bora decides to get close to Baek’s best friend, Pung Woonho (Byeon Wooseok) first. However, Bora′s clumsy plan unfolds in an unexpected direction. In 1999, a year before the new century, Bora, who turns seventeen, falls into the fever of first love. Director Bang Woori′s 20th Century Girl is about both the joys and the sorrows of puppy love. 20th Century Girl conveys a warmth toward its characters that imbues a feeling of nostalgia for the 20th century and optimism for what will come in the 21st century.

Hail to Hell, Director Lim Ohjeong's Debut Film That Received Hot Responses from the Audience

Nami and Sunwoo, who have been suffering from bullying and school violence throughout their school days, attempt suicide while their classmates go on a school trip. The story makes us anticipate unbearable tragedies, but the story of Hail to Hell is somehow lively and unpredictable. After the silly yet ridiculous suicide failure, the two try to take revenge on Chaerin, who bullied them most and now lives happily in Seoul. However, their plans go awry. Ridiculously, Chaerin, the worst bully ever, has found religion and has turned into a genuinely good person. What should they do now? Hail to Hell is a fascinating adventure story and an ironic moral drama created by a storyteller who combines outlandish planning and imagination.

Beyond, Director Lee Haram’s Debut Film Equipped with New Charms Perfectly

During the Korean War, a deserter finds a mute boy’s hut and steals his meager meal. Later, while his sister is away, a ghost visits the boy, who is now on the verge of starvation, and leads him to hell. A mournful children′s song accompanies this sad fairytale-like story, but despite its serious themes, the story still features a kind of playfulness. It is a mixture of intentionally blurred and disturbing silent cinematic images reminiscent of Guy Maddin′s early films, bizarre impressions of Korean horror films, and the primary color techniques of animation. Beyond is a travelogue and fantasy at the same time, where audiovisual stubbornness and originality shine on the premise of a defiant imagination.

The Dream Songs, an Amazing Directorial Debut by Actor Cho Hyunchul Who Receives Attention

On a bright spring day before a school trip, Semi falls asleep on one side of the classroom and suddenly awakens in tears over an ominous dream. She runs to Haeun, who is in the hospital after injuring her leg in a bicycle accident. Semi and Haeun are best friends. The film depicts a special day between the two. A spring day, puppy love, jealousy, friendship, small misunderstandings, shameful confessions, anxiety and wacky wit, red nose tips and ears, or the heels and dead skin cells in dreams, the verdant hill behind the village and the yellowish sunset—every small thing that makes up the world gathers up here and creates an unexplained and brilliant atmosphere, completing a kind of dreaming vision. The Dream Songs is full of vitality even in its sad moments.

SEOUL October 13 (Yonhap) -- “Grand Bell Award”, also known as “Daejong Film Award” which was unfortunately canceled in 2021, will kick off on December 9 at New Millennium Hall in Konkook University.

South Korean movie organization held “Media Day” in Chungmu Art Center on Wednesday, and addressed their plans and ways to improve “Grand Bell Award.”

Director Yang Yoon-ho (the leading figure of the organization) addressed “We have made significant modification to ‘Grand Bell Award’ since we are restarting this year.  We will do our best to make ‘Grand Bell Award’ which encompasses cultural richness to become a globally known award.“

Starting this year, the pre-screening method has been changed from submission based to selection based.

Eleven of the individuals from the field related to movie industry such as movie critics, reporters, programmers and more went through the screening process of 237 movies which premiered throughout the year, from there on 19 of the movies were carefully selected to be featured at the main event.

The organization opened a way for the public to participate in the selection of the award winners.

In total of 10 thousand national review boards will be recruited and they will participate in naming winners of six different awards given such as the “Best lead actress and actor awards”, “Best supporting actor and actress” and more. The final award winners will be selected based on both of the scores from the boards and the judges.

“Grand Bell Award” is one of South Korea’s long lasting traditional movie awards since it first kicked off in 1962. However, due to the transparency of the selection process, the name value of the award ceremony has plummeted.

Throughout the event held on October 12, self reflection of “Grand Bell Award” took place.

Director Lee Jang-ho is assigned as the lead figure of “Grand Bell Award Committee” addressed “I feel very ashamed and that I was not capable of putting a stop to the derailment of Grand Bell Award.  Individual interest in ‘Grand Bell Award’ at this moment in time will be greatly appreciated.”

Director Yang Yoon-ho stated “I feel like the indifference of ‘Grand Bell Award’ by those within the movie industry has led to the drop of name value of the award.  I would like to send dearest apology.”

Moreover, secretary general Lee Sang-wu stated “Everything about this award needs modification. “I am very bad about how the reputation of ‘Grand Bell Award’ has fallen, I would send my deepest apology.”

Lineup of movies competing at the main event were revealed.

“Decision to Leave,” “Hunt,” “Kingmaker,” “Hansan : Rising Dragon,” and “Broker” will be fighting for the title of Best Picture award.

As for the award for directors, Park Chan-wook from “Decision to Leave,” Kim Han-min from “Hansan: Rising Dragon,” Shin Su-won from “Hommage” and Hong Sang-soo from “In Front of Your Face” are nominated.

For the best actress award, Tang Wei from “Decision to Leave,” Yum Jung-ah from “Life is Beautiful,” Lee Hye-young from “In Front of Your Face,” Lee Jung-eun from “Hommage” and Park So-dam from “Special Cargo” are nominated.

Park Hae-il from “Decision to Leave,” Sol Kyung-gu from “Kingmaker,” Song Kang-ho from “Broker,” Jung Woo-sung from “Hunt,” Lee Byung-hun from “Emergency Declaration” and Ryu Seung-ryong from “Life is Beautiful” are nominated for the best actor award.

South Korean movie “Hunt” has been nominated in 12 different categories, taking the title of most nominated movie.

The slogan of “Grand Bell Award” is “People are watching, the world is watching.” This encompasses the committee’s firm stand and ambition to make “Grand Bell award” as one of the globally known film festivals.

For the honorary ambassador of “Grand Bell Award,” oldest South Korean actor Lee Soon-jae, recently debuted actress Choi Jung-woon, numerous media creators, and influencers have been appointed to advertise the upcoming “Grand Bell Award.” (END)

Review | Busan 2022: The Boys movie review – Sol Kyung-gu plays the lone good police officer in overwrought dramatisation of a true case of miscarriage of justice

  • Chung Ji-young’s drama The Boys, starring Sol Kyung-gu, tackles the true story of the wrongful imprisonment of three young men for robbery-homicide
  • The cast are excellent and the movie is slickly executed, but the story builds towards a ridiculous courtroom showdown, leaving viewers feeling manipulated

Sol Kyung-gu in a still from The Boys, a drama that follows a true case of miscarriage of justice in South Korea from 1999.

2/5 stars

Recreating a true story of wrongful imprisonment and high-level corruption, Chung Ji-young’s latest drama The Boys stars Sol Kyung-gu as the lone good police officer who dared to take on his own shady department.

Yu Jun-sang, Yeom Hye-ran and Heo Sung-tae fill out a strong ensemble cast, but Jeong’s sensationalist approach to this genuinely upsetting story soon descends into unwieldy and overwrought melodrama.

Set in South Korea’s rural Wanju province in 1999, the story opens with the hasty conviction of three young men for robbery-homicide, after they apparently broke into a small supermarket, bound and gagged the family who owned it, and stole cash and jewellery.

The family’s elderly grandmother died during the incident, and the boys confessed to the crime soon after their arrest.

A year later, detective Hwang Joon-cheol (Sol) is transferred to the district, and receives a tip-off that the convicted boys were in fact innocent.

His efforts to reopen the case are quickly shut down, but Hwang is convinced that his superior Choi Woo-sung (Yu) forced the confessions and manipulated the evidence.

The film follows his increasingly desperate attempts over the next 17 years to launch a retrial and reverse this egregious miscarriage of justice.

Chung has been turning out acclaimed features since the early 1980s, and he remains an assured hand behind the camera even at 75 years of age. The Boys is slickly executed, while the cast are uniformly excellent.

Sol Kyung-gu (back, left) as detective Hwang Joon-cheol and Heo Sung-tae as Hwang’s long-suffering subordinate in a still from The Boys.

Sol is perfectly cast as the world-weary detective willing to alienate himself, Serpico-style, from the rest of the department, to see justice done. Yu Jun-sang makes for a particularly unlikeable foil, exuding detestable arrogance and snarling self-importance.

Heo Sung-tae brings some much needed comic relief to the otherwise fraught proceedings, as Hwang’s long-suffering subordinate and reluctant collaborator in the quest to take down their higher-ups, only for his character to pretty much disappear in the film’s second half.

Unfortunately, Chung loses his grip on the drama as The Boys evolves from police procedural to virtuous crusade, building towards a ridiculously theatrical courtroom showdown.

Sol Kyung-gu as Hwang Joon-cheol in a still from The Boys.

Spurred on by the indisputable nobility of Hwang’s cause, the film seizes its audience by the heartstrings and tugs at them shamelessly. What should be a climax of genuine catharsis instead becomes a histrionic spectacle of cartoonish proportions that will leave audiences drained and manipulated.

What happened to these young men is undeniably heartbreaking, but The Boys leaves audiences feeling manipulated rather than moved.

Phantom, starring Seol Kyung Gu, Lee Ha Nee, Park So Dam, Park Hae Soo, and Seo Hyun Woo, unveiled its release date with an intriguing new poster and trailer.

Set in Gyeongseong in 1933, the upcoming film follows a group of individuals locked in a secluded hotel. Each of them is suspected of being a spy known as the “Phantom,” planted by the independence army to collect intel deep inside the Goverment-General of Chōsen. Believer director Lee Hae Young helms the movie.

Seol Kyung Gu will star as policeman Junji Murayama, and Lee Ha Nee will play radio intelligence officer Park Cha Kyung working for the Goverment-General of Chōsen. Starring alongside the two is Park So Dam as Yuriko, a mysterious Korean girl who became the second-in-command of the Governor-General’s secretary. Park Hae Soo will appear as the chief of the Presidential Security Service named Kaito Takahara, and Seo Hyun Woo will play cryptanalyst Cheon Gye Jang who is specialized in gathering intel by interception of signals.

The newly released poster shares a glimpse of the cast members alongside a hotel standing on the cliff’s edge. The fortified hotel hints at the upcoming suspenseful story and the chase of those who must do whatever they can to identify the real spy, those who have to make it out of the hotel alive and those who must not get caught until the end.

The trailer features the five wildly casting doubt on each other. Kaito says they would have to prove themselves or report someone else to survive and escape suspicion, foreshadowing the upcoming story filled with suspense and plot twists.

Phantom will premiere on January 18th.

Movies with star-studded casts coming to theaters next month

By Kwak Yeon-soo | 2022-12-18 15:38

December welcomed some of 2022's biggest releases, such as "Avatar: The Way of Water," and "Hero" among many others. January won't see as many theatrical releases as in past months, but it will still have some exciting titles on offer for the audience, such as "Switch," "The Point Men" and "Phantom."

"Switch" is a heartwarming drama about an A-list actor, Park Kang (Kwon Sang-woo), who wakes up one Christmas morning to find himself living an alternate version of his own life in which he had chosen to marry his girlfriend and settled into a quiet family life with two adorable kids. It will hit theaters on Jan. 4. The cast also includes Oh Jung-se, Lee Min-jung, and child actors Park Soi and Kim Jun.

The action drama, "The Point Men," starring actors Hwang Jung-min and Hyun Bin, will hit theaters on Jan. 18. Hyun will be back in his first movie since welcoming a baby boy with actress Son Ye-jin in November. Hyun Bin's last movie was the comedy action film, "Confidential Assignment 2: International."

Directed by Yim Soon-rye, the film revolves around Korean diplomat Jae-ho (Hwang) and National Intelligence Service agent Dae-sik (Hyun) who are on a mission to rescue Korean hostages kidnapped by the Taliban in Afghanistan. They must negotiate a settlement within 24 hours or the Taliban will kill the Korean hostages.

The movie, which wrapped up filming in 2020, was originally set for a 2022 release date. However, the studio delayed the film due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I wanted to tell stories of people on the frontier of the devastating crisis, saving other people's lives," the director said. "My character Dae-sik is a free-spirited man who respects the human dignity of each person. I felt like director Yim herself is a very warm and caring person," Hyun said.

The action spy film, "Phantom," written and directed by Lee Hae-young, will also hit theaters ahead of January's Lunar New Year holiday. It boasts a star-studded cast that includes Seol Kyung-gu, Park Hae-soo, Lee Ha-nee, Park So-dam and Seo Hyun-woo.

Set in 1933 during the Japanese colonial occupation of Korea, "Phantom" tells the story of five people suspected of being a mysterious spy for an anti-Japanese resistance group. Trapped inside an isolated hotel, the five characters must use their wits to survive and escape while suspecting one another.

Describing his character Junji (a Japanese police officer) as multi-layered, Seol said it was the most complex role he's played so far.

"Junji is the linchpin of the film. He is a man of many facets and suspicions. He shakes things up for five players inside the hotel, but the audience has to watch until the very end to understand who he really is and what his intentions are," Seol said.

'Phantom' is action-packed spy thriller with multi-layered mystery

Director Lee Hae-young, whose stylish crime thriller "Believer" (2018) earned him commercial success and critical acclaim, has returned with the action spy thriller "Phantom" with an ensemble cast.

Set in 1933 during the Japanese colonial occupation of Korea, the film follows five people suspected of being a spy for an anti-Japanese resistance group. Trapped inside an isolated hotel, the five characters must use their wits to survive and escape while suspecting one another.

Lee explained that the film is a period piece, but its plot and characters are mostly fictional.

"The film drew inspiration from a clandestine organization that fought against Japanese colonial rule in the 1930s, but it is very much a fictional story. I wanted to make a film where every character has a moment to shine ― both as an individual and as a team. The mise-en-scene elements come next," he said during a press conference for the film, Monday.

The cast revealed that they poured their hearts and souls into "Phantom," which they filmed two years ago.

Seol Kyung-gu, who plays the role of Japanese police officer Murayama Junji, said there was something appealing about the mystery genre.

"There are many films set in the 1910-45 Japanese colonial rule, but 'Phantom' is jam-packed with a mixture of multiple genres, including mystery, action and thriller. It also boasts entertaining elements, which are essential in a film," he said.

Park So-dam, who is making her return to the big screen for the first time after surgery for thyroid cancer, thanked the director for giving her the role. In the film, she portrays Yuriko, a Korean who works as a secretary for a high-ranking official within the Japanese colonial government in Korea.

"Around this period last year, I was lying in bed after surgery (for thyroid cancer). I'm glad that I am able to greet my co-stars and fans after regaining my health," she said.

"'The Silenced (2015)' was the first time I worked with director Lee. He's a very detail-oriented director who has a lot of ideas. He was very generous in sharing with me all the acting tips. So I wanted to work with him again."

Park Hae-soo, who was the last person to join the cast, plays the role of Kaito, a mastermind behind the Japanese operation to hunt down the spy. The "Squid Game" star speaks only Japanese throughout the film, which was a challenge for him.

"I practiced Japanese lines five to six hours a day. At first, I was hesitant about playing the role, so I called Seol for advice. He told me to meet with director Lee before I make a final decision. At our meeting, director Lee gave me a lot of courage that made me change my mind," he said.

Lee Ha-nee said the audience will be able to connect with five different characters by putting them in their shoes. "The audience can think of it as solving a jigsaw puzzle. It will be enjoyable if the audience watch each of the suspects and try to figure out who is the phantom, the spy," she said.

"Phantom" will hit local theaters, Jan. 18.
