Lee Joon-ik chose to focus on life of scholar-poet in upcoming film ‘Book of Fish’

Director Lee Joon-ik, a master of period films, chose to focus on the life of Joseon scholar Jeong Yak-jeon in his upcoming movie “Book of Fish.”

 

“I think there is an error in looking into and defining certain periods only by historical events and wars,” Lee said during a press conference at the Megabox Coex theater in Samseong-dong, Seoul, Thursday. He added that audiences are simply used to this because many existing period films approach stories this way.

 

“By looking into individuals that were rebellious at the time, I thought we could find out how the society actually modernized,” Lee said.

 

Lee’s new movie presents a fictional story based on a book by one of the leading scholars of the Joseon era. The scholar, Jeong Yak-jeon (Seol Gyeong-gu), was the older brother of Jeong Yak-yong, another leading scholar from the late Joseon era who is more widely known to the public.

 

At the beginning of the movie, Jeong Yak-jeon is sent into exile for accepting Christianity and other Western ideas. He arrives on Heuksando, a remote island off the coast of South Jeolla Province, and meets a young fisherman named Chang-dae (Byun Yo-han).

 

With some help from Chang-dae, Jeong starts writing a book about animals and plants living in the ocean.

 

“Chang-dae’s name appears at the beginning of Jeong’s book ‘Book of Fish,’” Lee said. This is where the director first got the inspiration for the movie script.

 

Since the young fisherman is all but absent from historical records, Lee had to use his imagination.

 

The upcoming film is Lee’s second black-and-white film. “Dong-ju: The Portrait of a Poet,” his 2016 film about real-life poet Yun Dong-ju, shows how Yun was imprisoned for his involvement in the Korean independence movement and died in a Japanese prison.

 

“The story of Dong-ju takes place in the Japanese colonial period, and he died early at the age of 28. I could not depict the story with a bright tone so I made it a black-and-white film,” Lee said.

 

But Lee said he chose black and white for his latest film for a different reason.

 

“I personally wanted to watch a black-and-white film that features the Joseon era,” he said. “‘Book of Fish’ is different (from ‘Dong-ju: The Portrait of a Poet’) because it has many cheerful scenes. Of course, it was also a difficult era for people. But there are characters like Gageodaek (Lee Jung-eun) and Byeoljang (Cho Woo-jin) that brighten up the mood of the film.”

 

Since black-and-white films are rare nowadays, acting in “Book of Fish” offered a new experience for many of the cast members.

 

Actor Lee Jung-eun said she’d tried to keep in mind that this was a black-and-white film throughout her performance.

 

“I tried not to exaggerate my facial expressions when performing. This is a black-and-white film, so a little movement matters a lot,” Lee said.

 

The new film also introduces many of the Jeong brothers’ poems to moviegoers.

 

“Poems from the Joseon era not only have literary value but also reveal how one views that world,” Lee said.

 

Some poems are uniquely presented in the movie through a “freestyle poetry battle” between two characters -- a competition that bears many similarities to a modern-day freestyle rap battle.

 

“Those used in the battle are all existing poems of Jeong Yak-yong,” the director said.

 

The film hits local cinemas March 31.

(Movie Review) 'The Book of Fish' tells story of struggle during historic upheaval in black and white

SEOUL, March 19 (Yonhap) -- "The Book of Fish" is the latest biopic by renowned director Lee Joon-ik, known as a master of period films in South Korea for his previous hits like "King and the Clown" (2005) and "The Throne" (2015).

 

This time, he sheds light on Jeong Yak-jeon, a brother of Jeong Yak-yong, one of the greatest thinkers in the 1392-1910 Joseon Dynasty.

 

Jeong Yak-jeon's name has been relatively forgotten among modern Koreans, compared with his younger brother who published piles of books on philosophy, science and theories of government and rulers.

"The Book of Fish" is named after a piscine encyclopedia written by Yak-jeon, an elite bureaucrat and scholar, who might have indulged in metaphysics of filial piety in the Confucianism-centered kingdom of Joseon in the early 19th century.

 

The film starts with Yak-jeon (Seol Kyung-gu) being sent into exile after the court-led persecution against Catholic believers in 1801. He is held on the southwestern island of Heuksan as a criminal charged with treason.

 

There, the curious scholar is impressed by a young fisherman named Chang-dae (Byun Yo-han), who has a deep knowledge of fish, seashells and seaweeds in the waters around the island.

The two men exchange their own knowledge and expertise, which helps them broaden their experiences and perspectives during the critical times of the 19th century, when Joseon is on the verge of historical upheaval stemming from the West.

 

Based on his observations and research on the island, Yak-jeon starts to write the pragmatic guidebook on fish, listing the names, shapes and edible usage of marine life, for low class people who have to do everything to eke out a living.

 

His progressive Confucianism-free mind, however, often clashes with that of his young friend Chang-dae, who adheres to the centurieslong Confucianism values and rejects Western thoughts.

 

At this point, the two characters seem to reflect the two different types of individuals who live in the historic moment when the medieval age is pushed away by modern times.

But the tone of the movie is engaging and not overly serious, with viewers neither bored nor on the edge of their seats.

 

Humorous spirits of supporting characters and the beautiful scenery of Heuksan Island help people take a breath and accept the ideological clash in a smoother way.

 

Seol Kyung-gu adds a veteran's touch to the movie with his portrayal of the curious and open-minded scholar, and Byun Yo-han manages well to create the fictional character of Chang-dae, who is young but conservative.

 

At the same time, the black-and-white cinematography makes the movie feel like a Joseon Dynasty ink painting.

 

The monochromatic scenes help the film set the focus more on each character and their narratives, while viewers even get the sense that color is not really important in the script-driven and performance-based piece.

 

"The Book of Fish," director Lee's second black-and-white movie following the 2015 biographical drama "Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet," will hit local screens on March 31.

"The Book of Fish" is the latest in director Lee Joon-ik's exploration of overlooked historical figures. In "The Throne" (2015), the master of period films shed light on the life of neglected Crown Prince Sado (1735-1762), who was deemed unworthy to rule and was locked inside a wooden chest and left to die by his own father, King Yeongjo.

 

Lee's black-and-white film "Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet" (2016) delved into the lives of famous Korean poet Yoon Dong-ju and his best friend and cousin, independence activist Song Mong-kyu. "Anarchist from Colony" looked into independence activist Park Yeol and Fuiko Kaneoko, who was Park's lover and was imprisoned with him on treason charges.

 

The upcoming biopic revolves around Jeong Yak-jeon (Seol Kyung-gu), the older brother of one of the leading scholars in the late Joseon era, Jeong Yak-yong. While living in exile on Heuksan Island in South Jeolla Province, he meets a young fisherman named Chang-dae (Byun Yo-han).

 

With the help of Chang-dae, who has a profound knowledge of fish, shell fish and marine plants, Jeong begins to write a book about sea creatures.

"I initially wanted to make a film about Hwang Sa-yeong, but it was short on drama. Jeong Yak-yong's life is too great for a two-hour movie. It needs to be made into a 16-episode series," Lee said during an interview with The Korea Times via Zoom, Friday.

 

Hwang was a devoted Catholic who wrote a long letter on silk to the Bishop of Beijing, Portuguese Franciscan Alexandre de Gouvea, to describe the anti-Catholic suppression of 1801. In his letter, Hwang called for foreign invasion in hopes that it would force the government to end its persecution of Catholics. Hwang was later arrested and executed for treason.

 

"Then I came across Jeong Yak-jeon. He was peculiar because it was unlikely for a scholar to write a book about marine life in the Joseon era. Most scholars at that time, including his younger brother, were focused on Confucianism ― the state ideology," he added.

 

The introduction of "Jasan Eobo," or Korean Atlas of Fish, briefly mentions that the late scholar wrote the book with the help of a fisherman named Chang-dae, which sparked the director's curiosity and was where the film essentially began for Lee.

 

"There was not much detail about Chang-dae, so I had to create a fictional story for the character. With this film, I wanted to focus on the lives of individuals rather than informing the audience about historical context through the story of a battle or a hero," Lee said.

 

In the film, Chang-dae appears as a dynamic and multi-faceted character whose worldview changes over time. Chang-dae, who is young but conservative, clashes with Jeong, who is older but progressive. Through the two contrasting characters, Lee aims to draw the ideological clash of the late Joseon era ― centuries-long Confucianism versus Catholicism and western principles.

Lee explained that compared with his first black-and-white biopic, "Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet," "The Book of Fish" has a lighter mood.

 

"This clearly differs from 'Dongju' because it has laugh-inducing scenes. Characters like Gageodaek (Lee Jung-eun) and Byeoljang (Cho Woo-jin) provide a moment of humor to lighten up the mood of the film. The beautiful scenery of Heuksan Island allows the audience to indulge in the film," he said.

 

The 62-year-old director said his experience of working as a film sales agent led him to make period films.

 

"When I attended overseas film markets and met people in the industry, I realized that they know very little about Korea's history. This encouraged me to make 'Once Upon A Time in the Battlefield' in 2003. Luckily, that became a hit, which gave me the strength to continue making period films until today," he said.

 

Lee debuted in 1993 with "Kid Cop," and since then created hit movies such as "The King and the Clown" (2005), "Radio Star" (2006) and "Sunset in My Hometown" (2017).

 

"The Book of Fish" will hit local theaters, March 31.

SEOUL, March 22 (Yonhap) -- Director Lee Joon-ik has carved out a unique position in Korean cinema, which is dominated by blockbuster action films like elsewhere in the world, for his quest to discover stories from Korean history.

 

He has made big-name period dramas like "The King and the Clown" (2005), one of the biggest hit historical movies in the country; "The Throne" (2015); "Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet" (2016); and "Anarchist from Colony" (2017).

The Book of Fish" is the latest in his efforts to shed light on lesser known historical figures struggling in the course of great historical events like blood-splattered political plots in the medieval era and the Japanese colonization of Korea in the early 20th century.

 

"As for a historical drama, you may think of special events or famous people in the past," director Lee said in an online interview with Yonhap News Agency and other media on Friday. "But my movie deals with a personal story of a figure who's been unheard of. It starts from a different perspective."

 

The new film is about Jeong Yak-jeon, the brother of Jeong Yak-yong, one of the greatest thinkers in the 1392-1910 Joseon Dynasty.

 

And the director discovered another overlooked figure, Chang-dae (Byun Yo-han), whose name was mentioned in the preface of "The Book of Fish," a piscine encyclopedia written by Jeong Yak-jeon in the early 19th century, featuring the names, shapes and usage of 155 species of marine life.

 

"There were great people in the past eras and we do remember them," he said. "But we easily forget that the great people have close friends as great as themselves. They couldn't make such achievements without assistance from their friends."

 

He said he wanted to show that Yak-jeon had Chang-dae, who played a role in writing the former's piscine encyclopedia during his exile on Heuksan Island, and that the latter also shared the same inner struggle in the historic moment when the medieval age was pushed away by modern times.

Lee's 2016 biographical drama "Dongju," which portrays the tragic life of young poet Yun Dong-ju in the Japanese colonial era, follows the story of the poet's cousin Song Mong-gyu, who devoted his life to the independence movement but was rarely remembered.

 

In another biopic "Anarchist from Colony," Japanese nihilist Fumiko Kaneko comes under the spotlight along with protagonist Park Yeol, who organizes an anarchist group in Japan during the colonial era.

To highlight the special cinematic focus on the lesser known or even lowly characters of Yak-jeon and Chang-dae, the director decided to go with black and white in "The Book" again, following "Dongju."

 

"The black-and-white cinematography is more effective to feature the essence of human life and the inner side of a character," said the director who majored in Asian painting in college. "The monochromatic scenes, which simplify the background, help viewers rivet their eyes more on characters and their relationship and emotion on the screen."

 

He admitted that a black-and-white film is a long shot in the South Korean film industry where colorful and lucrative silver screen projects are widely welcomed.

 

Even his biggest hit "The King and the Clown" won rave reviews not only for the arresting screenplay but also for effectively using the colors of costumes to portray the emotional nuances of characters.

 

But the 61-year old director said he knows there are still many people who love to explore humble characters who left some small marks on history, given that his previous black-and-white film "Dongju" attracted a larger-than-expected 1.1 million people.

 

"This movie provides no spectacles. But it has spectacular moments for emotions of characters," he said. "I just expect viewers to be impressed with the past times and historical figures through the movie."

 

"The Book of Fish" will hit local screens on March 31.

Exploring one scholar's life through a black-and-white lens

Finding the delicate balance between fiction and facts when working on any historical drama can be extremely difficult, especially when they are centered around real people that have been documented on record. While most presume the content of television series or movies is fictitious, audiences are quick to turn their backs at the slightest misinterpretation or distortion.  

 

Director Lee Joon-ik’s representative films consist mostly of such historical dramas: He directed “King and the Clown” (2005), “The Throne” (2014), “Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet” (2016) and “Anarchist from Colony” (2017), all of which not only reaped commercial success but also received some well-earned praise from audiences and critics alike for his interpretation of the historical figures. 

 

In the upcoming “The Book of Fish,” set for local release on March 31, the director focuses on scholar Jeong Yak-jeon (1758-1816), played by Seol Kyung-gu, when he was exiled to Heuksan Island during the Catholic Persecution of 1801, also known as Sinyu Persecution during King Sunjo’s reign in the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). It was during his exile that the scholar wrote a book on marine biology titled “Jasaneobo” to help peasants decipher the 226 varieties of fish and marine life living in the waters surrounding the island.

“His brother Jeong Yak-yong [1762-1836] is already a universally recognized figure, even by the Unesco, because his philosophy and works such as ‘Mokminsimseo’ explain a part of that dynasty’s civilization,” Lee said during an online interview with the Korea JoongAng Daily on Friday as he explained why he chose to highlight the scholar instead of his more famous brother. “He’s [Yak-yong] known to have written some 500 books [during his exile]. But King Jeongjo wrote in the records that ‘the older brother is better than the younger brother.’[It’s because] he was at the opposite end from Jeong Yak-yong who clung to that generation’s agenda, neo-Confucianism; If neo-Confucianism is based on historical figures, Jasaneobo is about natural science. It was something that Joseon aristocrats lacked, and the result is one which transcends social hierarchy and rank. What I’m trying to show is that difference between Mokminsimseo and Jasaneobo, not about their right and wrong.”

Lee also utilized a fisherman named Chang-dae (played by Byun Yo-han) as a character to complete the biographical structure of the story of Jeong Yak-jeon. At the preface of Jasaneobo, the scholar explicitly mentions his name and describes him as a person “who is quiet and perceptive to minutely observe everything [he] sees and hears.” 

 

Chang-dae also appears throughout the text on the marine animals that the scholar cited from this youth, but that is all that is recorded about him in historical records. The director crafted a fictitious narrative centered around Chang-dae, a bright-eyed, spirited young man living on the remote island with his own personal desires to climb the social ranks, who meets Jeong Yak-jeon and becomes his friend, teacher and student.  

 

“I had to set Chang-dae upon such path to reveal Yak-jeon’s essence,” Lee said. “This is Yak-jeon’s story but if [I] were to have put him at the center, it becomes nothing more than a mere biography of a great man. If [I] were to keep an objective viewpoint, as to not overly glamorize his work, I needed a comparison. The most obvious comparison would be his brother, Yak-yong, but [the film’s] title is Jasaneobo. The inspiration that led Yak-jeon to start writing this book was Chang-dae. And I needed him, even if it’s only partially, to have a connection with that civilization, to show [the audience] through his eyes the corruptive practices of the bureaucrats and what led the peasants to rebel against the system. That’s why I made Chang-dae that way; If he was only created for entertainment then that’s not meaningful enough [...] You need a proper justification to create a fictional character. That’s how you breathe life into other characters and they become people that resonate with the audience.”

“The entertaining part about Chang-dae is that he used to have unfulfilled desires which reach a turning point when he meets Yak-jeon,” Lee said. “And that process [of change] has to be genuine. Like a metamorphosis of a butterfly, he needed to ultimately arrive at the stage of taking responsibility for the results of his life.”

 

“The Book of Fish” is also the director’s second black-and-white film after “Dongju.” He chose the medium in the hopes of giving audiences a feeling of being taken back to the past.        

 

“Black-and-white is fantasy, because color is reality,” Lee said. “People think black-and-white is of the past and color is present, because we judge accordingly to the standards set by the civilization — the black-and-white screen came first, and then progressed to color. Black-and-white films are now a thing of the past, it’s now a fantasy that doesn’t exist in our daily lives [...] Filming black-and-white is easier than color in some ways, but harder in others. It’s easier because what I’m trying to convey becomes more salient [in black-and-white] but, if my intentions aren’t clear, [that confusion] is immediately reflected on the screen. In color, there are many visual distractions and I may be able to fake or cover them up in some other ways, but black-and-white doesn’t lie.”  

 

Lee singles out the scene in which Yak-jeon stands precariously on the edge of a cliff, drunk, and stares out to the sea from Heuksan Island as the most memorable in the movie.

 

“That angle in which Yak-jeon is facing the sea from the cliff looks very majestic,” Lee said. “But there was nothing special about the filming, I just propped up the camera there. It was actually a day-for-night scene — even though it was a night scene we filmed it during the day and darkened the screen [during editing]. But didn’t it seem natural as if it were really filmed during the night? The actual location of the place was Docho Island, but it’s similar to the setting of Heuksan. It was so beautiful and I wondered if I could film such breathtaking scenery for other films. I don’t think I can.”

 

The final scene in the movie, where Chang-dae and his family return to Heuksan Island turns to color as if to say his journey and lessons learned can be linked to the present as well.  

 

“History is reflected in the present, and the same goes for this genre,” the director said. “To see [the world] as it is shown, not through the way one wants to see, is what Chang-dae’s journey is about. Chang-dae's character tells the story of one young man’s journey of understanding civilization’s inconsistencies and accepting and respecting different viewpoints instead of categorizing them as right or wrong. I don’t think there’s anything else that [matters]. I just came to gradually realize this as I got older.”

The movie narrates a story of an exiled scholar Jeong Yak Jeon and a young fisherman, Chang Dae. After Jeong’s banishment to the Heuksando, he began to wonder about the sea rather than learning. Later, he meets with Chang, who wants to escape from the sea village. They gradually become friends and together they write ‘The book of fish .’ The movie team spent a special time meeting with various audiences, including history teachers, influencers, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, and officials from the National Library of Korea.

 

First, the technical advisor Lee Tae Won, and the writer Jung Myung Hyun attended the meeting for the members of the history community. There were in-depth talks about the movie and why they illustrate Jeong Yak Jeon instead of the better-known scholar Jeong Yak Yong. Notably, Byun Yo Han mentioned that to play Chang, a man of few records, he needed to seek Chang’s descendants in Heuksan. “I tried to study about Chang, what he could have seen at that time, and their message in the scenario,” he explained.

The National Library of Korea, which has the English version of the Book of Fish, joined the following event. As the book is a National Scientific Heritage, the officials attended the premiere to discuss its historical and educational value. It became more meaningful as the Ministry of Oceans Fisheries officials joined the event primarily because it depicts marine life in the late Joseon Dynasty.

 

After having special previews and guest visits with people from various fields, The Book of Fish will be released on March 31st.

Byun Yo-han laughs in the face of hurricanes

Struggles a young fisherman might have faced about a century ago come alive thanks to actor Byun Yo-han's performance in upcoming movie “The Book of Fish.”  

 

In the black and white movie that’s set to hit local theaters on March 31, Byun plays a character named Changdae, who dreams of leaving the sea behind him and studying for a better future on dry land. He meets Joseon era scholar Jeong Yak-jeon, who has been exiled to Heuksan Island. Through conversing with Jeong, Changdae starts to understand what things are most important to people.

 

“You really have to act with your eyes and voice when filming a black and white movie,” said Byun during an interview with the Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, adding that he was thankful to get a chance to be in such type of movie. “Even though I may seem clumsy, I wanted to act genuinely.”

 

Below are more edited excerpts from the interview.  

 

 

Q. What was the most difficult part of filming this movie?

A. Speaking in a regional dialect and working with live seafood was not that difficult. Deciding how to act out my character Changdae was more agonizing. I needed to do more than just express the character with my body. Changdae is somewhat similar to me. He was someone that many youngsters can sympathize with. Maybe that’s why I wanted to do a little better. I thought about what viewpoint Changdae, a youngster in that time period, would have of the world, and what kind of academic challenges he wanted to take on. I wanted to maximize what Changdae must have felt in his teens, 20s, and 30s to make my character a better version of himself.  

 

What did you learn from senior actor Sol Kyung-gu?

I really got so much inspiration from him. He jumps rope 1,000 times every day in the morning. And then he does his laundry and then jumps rope again. His room was right across from mine, and I couldn’t just stay not doing anything. I had to run around. Those patterns of behaviors show what things are needed to be done to fully prepare before the shooting of a scene. He doesn’t even look at scripts when he is on set. He has already memorized everything. With that energy, he stays more relaxed and with that relaxed mind he takes care of the younger actors. It is impossible to not have chemistry with him. It is all because he is just so perfect. I really learned a lot from him.  

 

How about working with actor Lee Jeong-eun?

It is the second time working with her since the 2018 drama “Mr. Sunshine.” I unfortunately didn’t get to see her much while working on that drama, but we did have some scenes where we share some emotional connections. This time, it was very nice that we got to stay on the island together and spend more time together. Even though what I heard were lines of the movie, the way she talks is very warm. She seems to have that power to embrace everyone, and that made me look back on where I am. I relied on her a lot.  

 

What was it like working with director Lee Joon-ik?  

He knows how to see strengths in people and cover up the weak points. He always says he is friends with actors, and I understood what he meant as I filmed with him.  

 

What was it like to experience the island weather?

While we were filming, three hurricanes hit the island. One time I was in Seoul for an event, and that’s when the hurricane hit. I texted the crew but no one answered so I was really worried. And I thought the next time such hurricane comes, I’ll definitely be there with the team. I experienced two hurricanes with the director and Sol. It was the first major hurricane to hit the island in 59 years, but the power of our movie must have been bigger as the hurricane just went away easily.  

 

How did you feel when you watched the final version of the movie?

I tried to hold back tears, but as I watched myself on screen, I was reminded of many different memories I had on set. I think they were very thankful tears. There is a hollow inside me. The emotions hit me hard because I got to watch the movie a long time after we were done filming.  

 

What do you mean there is a hollow inside you?

I think it’s passion and love. Every character in the film was very warmhearted. There were times when things were very confusing but the laughter never stopped. Such mystically complex emotions shared by all the actors and crew really made a mark on my heart.

There are only two colors, but it’s more energetic than any other movie and is filled with the scent of humanity. The picturesque scenery and people’s stories make a wonderful harmony with a black and white screen. As you follow the black-and-white tale, you will find yourself enjoying the deep afterglow with red eyes. Even I had no idea how vivid this black-and-white film would be.

 

The Book of Fish is a work that expands the preface of the book about fish written by Jeong Yak Jeon during his exile on Heuksando Island with cinematic imagination. In the foreword, Jeong states that he completed the book with a young man named Chang Dae. Director Lee Joon Ik adds fictional flesh to the movie. Then he depicts Heuksando Island’s scene, where two characters of different statuses share their knowledge and write a book together, with his unique affectionate views on the humans. 

 

King Jeongjo favored Jeong Yak Jeon. But in the first year of King Sunjo’s reign, he and his brothers are tortured during the Catholic Persecution of 1801. The persecution led to Jeong Yak Jong’s martyrdom, Jeong Yak Jeon, and Jeong Yak Yong’s exile to Heuksando Island and Gangjin. The beginning of the movie is sorrowful. On his way to Heuksando Island, Jeong Yak Jeon seems like he has no reason to live. The king left him high and dry. He crosses the desolate sea route and finally reaches Heuksando Island. However, from the small port, he is greeted by a sense of life different from the land.

 

The Book of Fish breaks the stereotype of black-and-white movies that we often regard as calm and static. It’s dynamic, rich, and friendly. That’s because it solely focuses on the people. In Heuksando Island, where Jeong Yak Jeon and Chang Dae are reborn as friends, islanders understand each other’s difficult situations. The two’s special friendship begins right there. The islanders welcome Jeong, the criminal (religious reasons) as if he’s their guest. With their help, he regains his curiosity and is soon fascinated by the ocean. Chang Dae, a fisherman with a thirst for learning, tries to stay away from Jeong Yak Jeon, who goes against his belief in Neo-Confucianism. But he can’t completely push Jeong, who has naturally melted into the island life, away. 

 

Therefore, this film is different from the other historical movies. Jeong Yak Jeon is an open-minded person who accepted Catholicism in Joseon, where Neo-Confucianism is centered. Rather than setting ranks, he is more interested in studies that can be of real help in people’s lives. That’s also the reason he writes the book of fish. On the other hand, Change Dae has been a fisherman all his life. So he believes that teaching himself with a book that he had to scrape for, broadening his knowledge, and practicing Neo-Confucianism is the right thing. He also dreams of a successful life. The two have different statuses, ages, and what they want from their academics. But Jeong holds out his hand first and suggests an equal relationship called the “trade of knowledge.”

 

The actors’ acting that breathes life into the characters is spectacular. In particular, Sol Kyung Gu challenged his first-ever historical genre. But he turns into Jeong Yak Jeon, who was exiled to Heuksando Island, impressing us with his performance. He naturally unveils the character’s emotions, whose curiosity as a scholar and sorrow for the times intersect by adding depth with less rigidness. Byun Yohan also shows a steady and eye-catching presence. Aside from his flawless dialect, he resolutely portrays a person with a strong belief and plot. Later, in the scene where he confuses himself between reality and his ideal, he fills the screen with his bitterness. Lee Jung Eun, who acts as a stepping stone between the two, adds rhythmic vitality with her simple and deft presence.

 

The unexpectedly prominent lineup of guest stars is another attraction in the movie. Ryu Seung Ryong comes out as Jeong Yak Yong, while actors Jung Jin Young, Jo Woo Jin, Bang Eun Jin, Kim Eui Sung, and more enliven the story. Ryu Seung Ryong imprints Jeong Yak Yong, who shares different values as a scholar, with his solemn presence. On the other hand, Jo Woo Jin draws laughter as a “not-unpleasant” government official who cares more about his interest than the people.

 

The Book of Fish is a movie that catches the eyes with its beautiful visuals and attracts people with stories that meet the present times. It unfolds a fun and easy plot by alluding people’s daily lives to Jeong Yak Jeon and Chang Dae’s relationship. But at some point, it arrives at the question.

 

Chang Dae cannot understand why Jeong Yak Jeon, his teacher and friend, live far from reality. Jang Yak Yong, exiled to Gangjin, writes various books, including Admonitions on Governing the People (guidelines and duties that the leader should follow). It is a different path in comparison to Jang Yak Jeon. Chang Dae’s concerns are not about right or wrong but about belief, attitude, and direction. We saw this kind of intense struggle in DONGJU: The Portrait of A Poet and Anarchist from Colony. And this time, Jeong Yak Jeon, who kept his belief even though he may go against the time, stands in front of Chang Dae. The long afterglow we feel after the movie is probably because the audience, like Chang Dae, saw the different perspective from the world that we know about through Jeong Yak Jeon.

SEOUL, April 1 (Yonhap) -- Local movie theaters, which have been in the doldrums amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, are expected to get a fresh boost from several upcoming releases of homegrown blockbusters.

 

The black-and-white historical drama "The Book of Fish" has spearheaded the potential spring run that would attract audience members who have been reluctant for nearly a year to come to theaters under strict social distancing.  It garnered nearly 35,000 moviegoers on its opening day Wednesday, far outnumbering the weekend leader "Godzilla vs. Kong" with 27,000, according to the latest box office data from the Korean Film Council.

 

"The Book of Fish" is one of the most anticipated films this spring for the return of director Lee Joon-ik, known as a master of period films in South Korea.  Thanks to the film's strong first-day performance, the daily box office record marked a combined 110,000 on Wednesday, the highest since Feb. 24, when it hit 112,000.

 

The science-fiction action blockbuster "Seobok" will lend support to the upside trend starting April 15.  Starring heartthrobs Gong Yoo and Park Bo-gum, the flick will be released simultaneously in theaters and via streaming after several postponements due to the protracted fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic.  "Seobok" is the first Korean-made film on a human clone, revolving around a former agent (Gong) who is assigned to take care of the first cloned human, Seobok (Park), who possesses the secret to eternal life.

 

On top of that, three more movies -- "In Our Prime," "Special Gargo" and "Mogadishu" -- will likely hit local screens in the ensuing months, as their distributors have applied to the local authorities for film rating.  The drama film "In Our Prime" stars veteran actor Choi Min-shik, who plays a genius mathematician from North Korea who disguises himself as a security guard of a high school.  "Parasite" star Park So-dam will return with the crime action thriller "Special Cargo," telling the story of a delivery girl who gets embroiled in an accident while delivering a child.  Directed by hitmaker Ryoo Seung-wan, "Mogadishu," an action film based on the true story of diplomats in South and North Korean missions in Somalia during the 1990 civil war, is also seeking the best timing for a theatrical run this spring.

 

The South Korean film industry, which experienced a 70 percent on-year drop in the number of filmgoers last year, has been struggling with lukewarm box office results in 2021 due to a drought of new bigname releases.  The number of film attendees fell 90 percent on-year to 1.8 million in January and 60 percent to 3.1 million in February.

English subtitles for director Lee Joon-ik’s “The Book of Fish,” a black-and-white historical flick about scholar Jeong Yak-jeon (1758-1816) will be available from Saturday at three Megabox theaters — at Coex in southern Seoul, Songdo in Incheon and Anseong in Gyeonggi.  

 

Megabox Plus M said Friday that it decided to release the film, which has been ranking high in the box office since its release on March 31, with English subtitles as the story is “strong enough to attract foreign viewers.”

 

“The Book of Fish” depicts the story of Jeong when he was exiled to Heuksan Island during the Catholic Persecution of 1801, also known as the Sinyu Persecution, during King Sunjo’s reign in Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). Jeong is played by veteran actor Seol Kyung-gu.

 

It was during Jeong’s exile that the scholar wrote a book on marine biology titled “Jasaneobo” to help decipher the 226 varieties of fish and marine life living in the waters surrounding the island. Jeong was the brother of universally recognized figure Jeong Yakong (1762-1836).

 

Director Lee said that he paid special attention to the translation as “it could be difficult to understand the story, especially from a foreigners’ perspective, if you fail to convey the meaning of Neo-Confucianism well in the context of the story.”

The 57th Baeksang Arts Awards unveiled its nominees for the categories of Television, Movies, and Plays.

 

The executive office of Baeksang Arts Awards announced the final list of actors and works for each category on the morning of the 12th through their official website. The nominees are chosen from those who were active in the past year in the fields of TV, movies, and plays.

Listed for Television series are Beyond Evil (JTBC), It’s Okay to Not Be Okay, Flower of Evil, My Unfamiliar Family (tvN), and Extracurricular (Netflix). Nominees for Best Entertainment Program were spread among various channels, including March of the Ants (KakaoTV), Hangout with Yoo (MBC), Sing Again (JTBC), You Quiz on the Block (tvN), and Legendary Stage – Archive K (SBS).

Furthermore, Architectural Exploration – Home season 3 (literal translation) (EBS), The Story of the Day Biting the Tail (SBS), Archive Project – Modern Korea 2 (KBS 1TV), Differential Class (JTBC), and Battle of the Century AI vs Human (SBS) were nominated for the Best Educational Show Award.

 

The competition for the best actor awards is fierce, as always. Nominated for Best Actor are Kim Soo Hyun (for tvN’s It’s Okay to Not Be Okay), Song Joong Ki (for tvN’s Vincenzo), Shin Ha Kyun (for JTBC’s Beyond Evil), Uhm Ki Joon (for SBS’ The Penthouse), and Lee Joon Ki (for tvN’s Flower of Evil). The nominees for the Best Actress Award is as following: Kim So Yeon (for SBS’ The Penthouse), Kim So Hyun (for KBS 2TV’s River Where the Moon Rises), Seo Ye Ji (for tvN’s It’s Okay to Not Be Okay), Shin Hye Sun (for tvN’s Mr. Queen), and Uhm Ji Won (for tvN’s Birthcare Center). 

 

Candidates for supporting actors are also jaw-dropping. Kim Sun Ho (for tvN’s Start Up), Kim Ji Hoon (for tvN’s Flower of Evil), Oh Jung Se (for tvN’s It’s Okay to Not Be Okay), Lee Hee Jun (for tvN’s Mouse), and Choi Dae Hoon (for JTBC’s Beyond Evil) are up for the Best Supporting Actor Award. Meanwhile, Park Ha Sun (for tvN’s Birthcare Center), Shin Eun Kyung (for SBS’ The Penthouse), Yeom Hye Ran (for OCN’s The Uncanny Counter), Jang Yeong Nam (for tvN’s It’s Okay to Not Be Okay), and Chan Jung Hwa (for tvN’s Mr. Queen) are listed as the nominees of the Best Supporting Actress Award.

 

Who will take the honor of the Best New Actor, the award that can only be won once in a lifetime? Kim Young Dae (The Penthouse), Na In Woo (River Where the Moon Rises), Nam Yoon Soo, (Extracurricular), Song Kang (Netflix’s Sweet Home), and Lee Do Hyun (JTBC’s 18 Again) are competing for the award. For Best New Actress are Kim Hyun Soo (The Penthouse), Park Gyu Young (Sweet Home), Park Joo Hyun (Extracurricular), Lee Joo Young (OCN’s Times), and Choi Sung Eun (Beyond Evil).

The Male and Female candidates for Best Variety Performer are also noteworthy. Moon Se Yoon on 2 Days & 1 Night (2D1N) and Tasty Guys, Shin Dong Yup who leads Immortal Songs and My Little Old Boy, Yoo Jae Suk on Hang Out with Yoo and Sixth Sense, All the Butlers and Busted! 3’s Lee Seung Gi and Jo Se Ho from You Quiz on the Block were nominated. For female nominees, there are Where is My Home and Love Naggers’ Kim Sook, Problem Child in House’s Song Eun I, I Live Alone’s Jang Do Yeon, Girls High School Mystery Class’ Jae Jae, Omniscient Interfering View’s Hong Hyun Hee.

 

Up for the Film Category are Moving On, Deliver Us from Evil, Samjin Company English Class, Voice of Silence, and The Book of Fish. The directors of these works are also nominated for Best Director Award.

The lineup for Best New Actor in the Film section includes all generations. Kim Do Yoon (Peninsula), Ryu Soo Young (Steel Rain 2: Summit), Park Seung Joon (Moving On), Lee Bong Geun (The Singer), Hong Kyung (Innocence) are up for the Best New Actor Award. Meanwhile, Park So Yi (Deliver Us from Evil), Shin Hye Sun (Innocence), Jang Yoon Ju (Three Sisters), Jung Soo Jung (More Than Family) are heading towards the Best New Actress Award.

This year’s Baeksang Arts Awards will take into consideration contents released between May 1st of 2020 to April 11th of 2021. This includes all Korean media from terrestrial, cable, OTT, and web channels. 40 total members of the professional judging committee within the industry conducted a preliminary survey to select final candidates. 

 

The Baeksang Arts Awards will be held live on JTBC from 9 PM KST on May 13th. It will be hosted without audiences, due to the COVID-19 situation.

Director Lee Joon-ik of 'Book of Fish' wins grand prize at Baeksang Awards


SEOUL, May 14 (Yonhap) -- Director Lee Joon-ik of the historical drama "Book of Fish" and comedian Yoo Jae-suk have won the grand prize in the film and TV categories, respectively, at this year's Baeksang Arts Awards.


Lee, known as a master of period films in South Korea for his previous hits like "King and the Clown" (2005) and "The Throne" (2015), took the top prize for films at the prestigious entertainment awards show held at KINTEX exhibition hall on Thursday in Goyang, just northwest of Seoul.


The latest black-and-white historical biopic "Book of Fish" features the story of Yak-jeon, an elite bureaucrat in the 1392-1910 Joseon Dynasty who wants to write a piscine encyclopedia while in exile on a remote island with the help of young fisherman Chang-dae.

The best film award went to the drama "Samjin Company English Class," while Hong Eui-jeong of the crime thriller "Voice of Silence" received best directing and director-writer Park Ji-wan won best scenario for her maiden film "The Day I Died: Unclosed Case."


Yoo Ah-in from "Voice of Silence" and Jun Jong-seo from the thriller "The Call" were given best actor and actress awards, respectively.

Comedian Yoo Jae-suk, who recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of his debut, claimed the grand prize in the TV category for his hit variety shows "Hangout with Yoo" on MBC and "You Quiz on the Block" on tvN.


The psychological thriller "Beyond Evil" won best picture, with its screenwriter Kim Su-jin and lead actor Shin Ha-kyun winning best screenplay and best actor, respectively.


The prize of best TV director went to Kim Cheol-kyu of the suspense "Flower of Evil," while Kim So-yeon won best actress for her performance in the melodrama "The Penthouse: War in Life."


Launched in 1965, the Baeksang Arts Awards is one of the most prestigious entertainment award shows in South Korea and encompasses the fields of TV, film and theater.

Korean comedian Yoo Jae-suk and Lee Joon-ik, the director of period film “Book of Fish,” won the grand prizes in the TV and film categories respectively at the 57th Baeksang Arts Awards.  This year’s award ceremony took place at Kintex exhibition hall in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province on Thursday night and it was hosted by comedian Shin Dong-yup and singer-actress Suzy. 


Yoo, the winner of this year’s TV categories’ grand prize, was recognized for hosting multiple successful TV variety shows including MBC’s “Hangout with Yoo,” tvN’s “You Quiz on the Block” and “Running Man.”  “Many nowadays know me as a TV show program host, but I am actually a comedian who debuted in 1991. I will try to focus more on making people laugh,” Yoo said during his acceptance speech.  At last year’s Baeksang Arts Awards, Yoo was the winner of the best male variety performer prize for his work hosting MBC’s “Hangout with Yoo.”  Yoo also recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of his career through some of the TV programs that he is hosting.

Lee, widely known as a master of period films here for his previous hits including “King and the Clown” (2005) and “The Throne” (2015), also attended the ceremony and expressed his gratitude after winning the grand prize in film on Thursday.  “The movie (‘Book of Fish’) failed to attract many audiences but (I think that) the value of the film was recognized as I receive this award. Thank you,” Lee said.


Lee’s black-and-white movie, which was released on Mar. 31, presents a fictional story based on a book by one of the leading scholars of the Joseon era. The scholar, Jeong Yak-jeon (Seol Gyeong-gu), was the older brother of Jeong Yak-yong, another leading scholar from the late Joseon era who is more widely known to the public.  At the beginning of the movie, Jeong Yak-jeon is sent into exile for accepting Christianity and other Western ideas. He arrives on Heuksando, a remote island off the coast of South Jeolla Province, and meets a young fisherman named Chang-dae (Byun Yo-han). With some help from Chang-dae, Jeong starts writing a book about animals and plants living in the ocean.


For the TV section, “Beyond Evil” earned three awards this year -- best picture, best screenplay and best actor for the performance by Shin Ha-kyun as the fearless Lee Dong-sik. 


For the film section, Yoo Ah-in who played Tae-in, a character that does not have any lines, in “Voice of Silence” won best actor, while Jun Jong-seo, who played the reckless Oh Young-sook in thriller “The Call,” won the best actress award.


The awards ceremony has been held annually since 1965 to recognize achievements in the Korean TV and film industry. Like last year, this year’s event was held without any audience due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Director Lee Joon-ik of the period film "Book of Fish" and comedian Yoo Jae-suk were the big winners at this year's Baeksang Arts Awards.


At the ceremony that took place on Thursday evening at KINTEX exhibition hall in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, Lee became a three-time grand prize winner after taking home the same award in 2006 for "King and the Clown" and in 2016 for "The Throne" and "Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet."


"A period film costs so much to make. The cast and crew made sacrifices in order to bring this film to the big screen. The film wasn't a big success although it received good reviews from critics and movie fans. Thank you for the award," Lee said during his acceptance speech.


The acclaimed director also paid tribute to the late veteran film producer Lee Choon-yun, who passed away on May 11. He was the head of Cine 2000 and producer of hit films including "Art Museum By the Zoo" (1988) and "The Terror Live" (2013).


Director Bong Joon-ho attended this year's event as presenter, after he didn't show up at last year's event even though he won the grand prize for his black comedy thriller "Parasite." It has been reported that his next project will be an animated film about deep-sea creatures. He is now writing the script for a currently unnamed English-language film.


The female-driven mystery comedy "Samjin Company English Class" won the Best Film award, while director Hong Eui-jeong of the crime thriller "Voice of Silence" received the Best Director award. Filmmaker Park Ji-wan won the Best Screenplay award for his crime drama "The Day I Died: Unclosed Case."


Yoo Ah-in won the Best Actor award for his role as a mute crime scene cleaner in "Voice of Silence," while Jun Jong-seo took home the Best Actress award for her role as a psychopath in the thriller "The Call."


The Best Supporting Actor and Actress awards in the film category went to Park Jung-min, who played a transgender character in "Deliver Us from Evil," and Kim Sun-young, who played an ailing single mom in "Three Sisters."

Comedian Yoo won the grand prize for hosting hit variety shows such as tvN's "You Quiz of the Block" and MBC's "Hangout with Yoo." With the latest recognition, Yoo became a two-time grand prize winner following 2013 for SBS's "Running Man"


"I don't know what to say. It's such a pleasure and honor to accept this award. People call me a presenter or TV show host, but I'm a comedian. I'll try to arouse more laughter in the future," Yoo said in his acceptance speech.


JTBC's drama series "Beyond Evil" grabbed three awards ― Best Drama, Best Screenplay and Best Actor for Shin Ha-kyun. Kim So-yeon won the Best Actress award for her performance in "The Penthouse: War in Life."


The Best Director award in the TV category went to Kim Cheol-kyu of tvN's drama series, "Flower of Evil." The Best Supporting Actor and Actress awards in TV went to Oh Jung-se, who played a patient with autism in tvN's "It's Okay to Not Be Okay," and Yeom Hye-ran who played the leader of the counters in OCN's "Uncanny Counter."


For variety shows, singer-actor Lee Seung-gi won Best Variety Performer awards for JTBC's "Sing Again" and Jang Do-yeon won for MBC's "I Live Alone."


The TikTok Popularity Awards, voted by video app TikTok users around the world, went to Kim Sun-ho of tvN's drama series, "Start-Up," and Seo Yea-ji of, "It's Okay to Not Be Okay." 


The organizing committee shrugged off a dispute surrounding Seo despite growing calls to remove her from the list of nominees as she has been embroiled in controversy over manipulating and controlling her then-boyfriend Kim Jung-hyun in 2018.

Entertainer Yoo Jae-suk and director Lee Joon-ik took home the grand prize trophies from the 57th Baeksang Arts Awards on Thursday night. 


Comedian Shin Dong-yeob and singer-actor Bae Suzy were the M.C.s at the ceremony held in Kintex in Goyang, Gyeonggi, organized by JTBC Plus and Ilgan Sports. 


The annual ceremony awarded content aired or released on public broadcasters, cable channels and local streaming platforms from May 1, 2020 to April 11 this year.  


Yoo, who is celebrating his 30th anniversary this year since his debut as a comedian in 1991, received the grand prize in the television division for his ability to bring out the most in his interviewees in his show “You Quiz on the Block” airing on tvN. His interview excerpts with not just celebrities but a wide variety of people in different professions would make headlines or go viral on YouTube. The versatile entertainer also never hesitates to expand his horizons by trying his hand in different types of show formats such as “Sixth Sense” on tvN, “Hangout with Yoo” on MBC and Netflix variety series “Busted!” The entertainer last received the grand prize in the same category in 2013.   


“Nowadays people refer to me as a host or an M.C., but deep down, I’m a comedian,” he said at the acceptance speech. “I will try to bring more laughter to the people.” 


Director Lee took the grand prize in the film division for his historical drama film “The Book of Fish” and the artistic local scenery he created by making the film black and white. “The Book of Fish” reinterprets the works of highly esteemed scholars from the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) — Jeong Yak-jeon (1758-1816) and Jeong Yak-yong (1762-1836) — and makes it easier to the contemporary audience to understand.   


“It takes a lot of money to do a historical drama film,” Lee said. “When the script for ‘The Book of Fish’ came out, I wasn’t confident enough to make this film commercially successful because I didn’t think the story could reach a wide number of people. I had to cut down on the production costs as much as possible, and during that process, a lot of people from different fields did not hesitate to sacrifice their time and effort here.   


“I’m so grateful to the many actors who appeared as cameos, but truthfully they were more than that,” he continued. “Although the film did not reap commercial success, through receiving this trophy I feel like the film has been accepted [by people].” 


Best film and best drama each went to “Samjin Company English Class” and JTBC television series “Beyond Evil.” “Samjin,” directed by Lee Jong-pil, tackles company corruption set in the 1990s, spotlighted by a group of female employees at the lower end of the social hierarchy. “Beyond Evil” received critical acclaims for linking real social issues, such as regional development, into the crime thriller. The series also garnered best actor for Shin Ha-kyun and best screenplay for writer Kim Soo-jin. 


Best actress award went to Kim So-yeon for her performance in highly popular SBS series “Penthouse.” It was the first time for both actors Kim and Shin to receive a trophy at the ceremony. Best actor and best actress award in the film division each went to Yoo Ah-in and Jun Jong-seo for their roles in “Voice of Silence” and Netflix film “The Call,”  respectively. 


Best supporting actor and actress award in film went to Park Jung-min and Kim Sun-young from “Deliver Us From Evil” and “Three Sisters.” In television, the same awards went to Oh Jung-sae and Yeom Hye-ran from tvN series “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay” and OCN series “The Uncanny Counter.”   


Seo Yea-ji and Kim Sun-ho were voted by fans in TikTok to receive TikTok Popularity Awards, but did Seo not show up at the ceremony due to her recent disputes involving her ex-boyfriend Kim Jung-hyun. 


The award ceremony has been held without an audience from last year, as a precautionary measure against the Covid-19. The participants were all spaced apart according to social distancing and wore masks.

Sul Kyunggu, a former theater actor, dominated the theatrical world in the early 2000s.  After taking smaller roles in the films such as A Petal (1996), Girls’ Night Out (1998), and Phantom (1999), Sul Kyunggu starred in A Peppermint Candy directed by Lee Changdong in 2000, standing out as a representative actor of Korean films in a moment.  Youngho in A Peppermint Candy is a symbolic character representing the contemporary history of Korea.  Youngho, who used to be a good and friendly laborer, turns into a torturing policeman and again a vicious entrepreneur, but he ends up losing everything.  Through delicate yet powerful acting, Sul shows a man’s images which change over the years.  He lives as the man of those days.


After becoming a star with A Peppermint Candy, it is no exaggeration to say that all of Sul’s films in his filmography are his representative works. It is impossible to pick one or two representative works in his filmography.  Also, there is no limit to the spectrum that he has played.  Sul was an artistic comrade of Director Lee Changdong, a cineaste, and a ‘box office hit partner’ of Director Kang Woosuk.  From an ordinary banker, the lowest man, the greatest sportsman, and to the most beloved detective, Sul played a variety of roles in his career.  Especially, in his filmography, the two films, Silmido and Haeundae, have exceeded 10 million viewers, setting a criterion for the ‘Mega’ box office hits in Korea.  In Silmido which depicts an actual event in modern history, and in the disaster film Haeundae which depicts a tidal wave in Haeundae, Sul Kyunggu faithfully completes his roles.  At least the scenes Sul appears always end with sincerity.


The film Another Public Enemy proved that Sul Kyunggu can perform excellently in the framework of commercial films and boost the perfection of his work.  We can never imagine Kang Chuljoong without Sul Kyunggu’s acting, a corrupt detective who struggles not to cross the last line he should protect as a human being.  Actor Sul and Director Lee Changdong met again and made Oasis, which seems like an art film version of Kang Chuljoong.  Acting a scumbag devoting himself to love seems to be Sul Kyunggu’s signature.


The film The Merciless (2017) is the big break of Sul Kyunggu, who plays an ordinary guy with a bad but good character.  The public, who felt in love with the stylish movie belatedly, found Sul Kyunggu’s new charms in the film.  They found the charm of a middle-aged man who is getting older handsomely in Sul Kyunggu.


Thankfully, Sul himself opened his eyes to ‘his own style,’ too.  But there’s no difference in him.  He cried together in the pain of the Sewol Ferry Disaster, which we should never forget, and struggled at the bottom of the world.  Recently, in The Book of Fish, directed by Lee Joonik, Sul went back 200 years and played a noble scholar.  He appears as always to be ‘the person’ of the time that needs his face.


Since his debut, Sul writes, ‘Life is still beautiful, though,’ whenever he gives his autograph to his fans.  It’s the line from his debut film A Peppermint Candy.  We can see again how he feels about playing the roles of people who had to struggle with their whole body during the ugly time.  Sul is the hottest actor in the Korean film industry in the 2000s and the actor who has been burning hotter and hotter for 20 years.  That’s why he is getting more and more gorgeous.  Park Hyeeun

Dexter Studios Signs VFX Contract for THE MOON

Along with the Gods director Kim Yonghwa will soon return to set for his latest production, the space drama The Moon. On the heels of the global success of SPACE SWEEPERS, Korea’s first space-set film, Kim’s new film will star Sul Kyunggu, D.O. (aka Doh Kyungsoo), and Kim Heeae.


Dexter Studios, the VFX company, set up by Kim when he made Mr. Go (2013), has signed a contract worth around KRW 6 billion (KRW 5.4 million) to complete the visual effects on the forthcoming production. To be produced by Blaad Studios, the film is on track to begin production in early summer.


The Moon will follow the story of a man who is stranded in space following an accident, played by Doh Kyungsoo, and the man on earth played by Sul Kyunggu, trying to get him home. Kim Heeae will play a NASA official holding a critical key to the incident.


Kim scored consecutive ten million admissions hits with Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds (2017) and Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days (2018), which are currently the third and 12th most well-attended local films at the Korean box office.


Beyond Director Kim’s films, Dexter Studios has provided acclaimed visual effects for SPACE SWEEPERS, ASHFALL (2019) and the Chinese box office hit The Wandering Earth, among many other hits films. Dexter also plans to make use of a new virtual production studio they are building in Paju, to the west of Seoul.

Korean Films on Show at 20th Anniversary of New York Asian Film Festival

BOOK OF FISH and SAMJIN COMPANY ENGLISH CLASS Lead 20th NYAFF Slate

The New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) is preparing to celebrate its 20th edition this summer and joining the festivities as usual will be a healthy selection of new indie and commercial films from Korea, supported by the Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY). 
 

Featuring in the ‘Standouts’ strand will be Lee Joonik’s period black and white film The Book of Fish with Sul Kyunggu and Byun Yohan, which recently earned the Grand Prize at the Baeksang Arts Awards, as well as Lee Jongpil’s hit 90s-set workplace drama SAMJIN COMPANY ENGLISH CLASS (2020).
 

Screening in the ‘Genre Masters’ section is Kwon Ohseung’s debut film Midnight, which launched simultaneously on June 30 in theatres and on the local streaming service TVING. The film stars Jin Kijoo as a young deaf woman who gets sucked into a deadly overnight cat-and-mouse chase with a deranged serial killer played by Wi Hajun.
 

Among the indie films to be featured at this year’s NYAFF are Fighter (2020), the second narrative film from director Jero Yun, about a North Korean defector who trains to become a boxer, Lee Seungwon’s acclaimed Jeonju Cinema Project Three Sisters (2020), a family dramedy with Moon Sori, and Lee Taegyeom’s I Don’t Fire Myself (2020), which debuted at the Jeonju International Film Festival last year, where it earned a Best Acting Prize.

 
More titles are expected to be announced for the festival, which will showcase a total of 60 Asian films later this month. This year’s NYAFF is scheduled to take place over August 6-22.

According to media outlets, Jeon was offered the lead role in the new Netflix original film KILL Bok Soon. To which, her agency Management SOOP responded, “The actress is reviewing the offer.”


The role she was offered to play is the role of a “killer.” If she joins this upcoming Netflix original series, it will be her first collaboration with Netflix and her first action thriller film. Since the actress mostly showed her power in the drama genre, we can’t help but wonder how her unique color will melt into the action thriller.


In addition, The Merciless director Byun Sung Hyun will helm the production of KILL Bok Soon. The possible collaboration of the best actress, a successful director, and Netflix is already a hot topic.

According to News1 on the 27th, Seol Kyung-gu received a casting offer for Netflix original movie 'KILL Bok-soon', which is currently being prepared by director Byun Sung-hyun, and he is in the process of coordinating.

 

This will be his third time working with Director Byun Sung-hyun following ‘The Merciless’ (2017) and ‘Kingmaker’ (pending release).  It’ll also be his third reunion with actress Jeon Do-yeon, after ‘I Wish I Had a Wife’ (2000), and ‘Birthday’ (2018).

SEOUL, Aug. 13 (Yonhap) -- The spy action film "Yacha," starring Sol Kyung-gu and Park Hae-soo and directed by screenwriter Na Hyun, will be released worldwide on Netflix, according to the American video platform on Friday. 


"Yacha" follows the story of a prosecutor who meets a person called "Yacha" while conducting a special inspection in Shenyang, China. 


Sol Kyung-gu plays Kang-in, the head of the NIS branch in Shenyang and the black team, which is dedicated to overseas operations. Kang-in is a cold-hearted character also called "Yacha." 


Park Hae-soo acts as prosecutor Ji-hoon, who is demoted to Shenyang after working according to the law. 


Yang Dong-geun becomes manager Hong, a character with good sense and skills while Lee El takes the role of Hee-won, a veteran senior agent. Song Jae-rim will become Jae-kyu, a member of the activist team Jin-young will act as a member of the black team. (END)

The movie ‘The Angel Without, The Devil Within‘ will be released on Netflix.

According to Starnews, Showbox recently signed a copyright contract with Netflix for The Angel Without, The Devil Within. The movie will meet the viewers as a Netflix original film, just like Space Sweepers, according to the industry insiders.


The Angel Without, The Devil Within is an espionage action film set in Shenyang, China, the biggest battleground for spies. The story begins when a man who goes by the name “Yacha” meets the prosecutor who’s sent to Shenyang. It’s a new project by The Prison director Na Hyun.


The filming began on December 31st, 2019, and ended on May 27th, 2020. Since then, Showbox has been coordinating the movie’s release date. But with the ongoing pandemic, the company ended up choosing Netflix.

Sol Kyung Gu, Park Hae Soo, Yang Dong Geun, Lee El, Song Jae Rim, and GOT7’s Jinyoung joined the cast.


First, Sol Kyung Ku plays Kang In, the head of the NIS branch in Shenyang, China. As the leader of the “Black Team,” he leads the overseas operations. Kang In is a cold-hearted person who goes by the name “Yacha,” meaning a monster that eats humans. He is all about completing the missions by fair means or foul. Park Hae Soo takes on the role of Ji Hoon, a prosecutor who got demoted to the spy agency.


The cast for the Black Team is also impressive. Yang Dong Geun turns into Chief Hong, while Lee El appears as Hee Won, a veteran senior agent. Plus, Song Jae Rim takes on the role of Jae Gyu, a man of action. Lastly, Jinyoung completed the fancy cast as Jung Dae, the youngest member.
