THE WALKING AS SYMBOL FOR LIFE

Yesterday, I wrote about the symbolism of the bridge. Bridge represents a connection between two worlds (Heaven/gods vs. Earth/humans; Life vs. Death). Here in the 6th episode, Sunny meets WY again on the bridge. Here we have a different dichotomie: visible vs. invisible. Here, she doesn't see "Kim Woo Bin", yet he is present in her mind. So her words make him see that she is thinking about him and how he affects her. She doesn't know, he is right there, next to her. He is invisible, though present in her mind. On the other hand, our Grim reaper can't say what he thinks about her, but he sees her. She is visible, but his thoughts are invisible. So we can notice the opposite in their situation. Yet, his action (saving her) reveals his inner feelings. He is invisible to her, but he makes his presence known which makes Sunny freak out. She hears the phone ringing, she feels a presence too... nonetheless, our Grim reaper can't say anything to her. All this time, Sunny is talking to herself. Her inner thoughts are revealed to the Grim reaper, while "Kim Woo Bin" doesn't make any comment, but  he is active: GR just listens to her, looks at her and helps her. So Sunny meets our GR while walking. All this leads me to the next subject: walk. The bridge is also related to the topic "walk" and "path". As we all know, we can walk on a bridge and a bridge represents a path. In a lot of episodes, walking is often mentioned or shown, like for example in the episode 1/2. We see Eun Tak and KS walking together in Québec. But if you pay more attention to it, you will notice that Eun Tak is walking, while KS is following her. Later, we only see him in the park thinking

      Reveal hidden contents

, whereas Eun Tak is always shown walking. Remember that in the episode 4,  Eun Tak was walking towards him with such a joy and cheerfulness, while he was sitting and thinking about his first love.

      Reveal hidden contents

As you can observe, KS is rather passive all this time: either he is following her or he is waiting for her. To sum up, Eun Tak is always shown as someone active with her walking (f. ex. wandering in the streets while waiting for her aunt to fall alseep), as KS is more an observer. I could mention more examples, but the best illustration comes in the last episode:

He is looking at her walking towards him while thinking that Eun Tak represents life and death.

    Thanks to @vivvianne22

He is even mentioning her walking. This is no coincidence. His passive attitude corresponds to his "way of life". He has never lived, since he doesn't walk on his own. As conclusion, the walking represents life and since he is so passive, we can come to the conclusion that he doesn't live at all. His passivity in life is symbolised with his behaviour to walking. Since walking symbolises life and as such, there must be a path to walk on... The path connected to life is also illustrated with the afterlife

      Reveal hidden contents

Even in death, people have to walk to the afterlife so that we can see that walking is connected to life and death.

The reason why I came to this topic is because of a French poem called "sensation" written by Rimbaud.

In this poem, Rimbaud expresses with the walking "joy for life".  All the senses are mentioned: vision, smell, hearing aso which symbolises that the person is really living. He loves life and enjoys nature. There is no restrain, no resent, no regret and he is not thinking about the future: he enjoys the moment. Striking is that in the last verse, he mentiones that walking in the nature can make someone happy, just like walking next to a woman. As you can see, this made me think of Eun Tak. Walking by her side made him happy like KS confessed in the last episode. She was his sun... however he only saw her shining. He didn't use his other senses!! In my opinion, this poem represents how KS should live.

His death can't happen now because he hasn't started living yet. Like I wrote before, life is connected to death. How can he die, if he doesn't live at all? To me, that's one of the reasons why Eun Tak couldn't remove the sword. He is not living, he is actually afraid of living!! Like he said, he doesn't want to regret that's why he is stopping himself before he starts living.

Gahh!! Like usual, I always adore your interpretation of the metaphor used in your analysis.

I agreed that, in order for Kim Shin to die, is by living the life again. He has to feel the love in order to be loved. I sooo excited what will be happened in the next episode. The drama has so much mystery to unfold.

Don't hesitate to tag me again in your next post!

@selenette @salz Yes, I am more and more convinced that the removing of the sword is connected to the resent. In order to let it go, he needs to forgive and forget. Actually, his punishment is related to the recalling. He is suffering because he can't forget... notice that he doesn't want to forget. Sure, only until the last three episodes, he started opening up: mentioning his past to others. It is clear that he never talked about it to anyone before. As conclusion he had to let go from the past. He needs to open up and focus on something else: love and Eun Tak. The latter is someone who doesn't held grudges against people. She could have asked for a harsher punishment (for the gangsters) but she didn't want them to be killed. Then we saw that KS respected her decision. As conclusion, she influenced him with his sentence (spending two days in that car). That's why I am expecting her to make KS more forgiving and accept the king's apology. She will be the link between GR and the goblin. She has already started getting closer to GR.

As for GR, this is the opposite: he needs to remember so that he can make it up to his former friend. KS used to consider the king as his close friend and he didn't expect that the king would betray him. GR will have to protect ET from that new squad for missing souls. Only by protecting her, he has a chance to redeem himself. Moreover, Sunny is there to make him remember what is real love. He has to make it up to Sunny as well.

I came to realise the importance of the "bridge". Remember that Ji Yeon Hee (Eun Tak's mother) met the deity in form of an old ahjumma on the deserted bridge.

Then we have the two meetings of Grim Reaper and Sunny that also happened on that bridge:

Actually, a bridge is built to connect two sides and in this case, we can see that the bridge symbolises the connection between two worlds:

    - god vs. human

    - death vs. life

A bridge makes it possible that two sides and world can meet and see each other. Then you would probably ask about the goblin? In my opinion, the goblin has the powers of a god but he is still human. He can't change his look, he lives like a human as well: feelings, eating, sleeping aso. On the other hand, GR is a little different. They  act like humans, but like WY said to the other GR, that he found it weird that they needed to act like humans, although they are dead.

@syeramy Glad that you are following this thread too!

Yup! and as usual I love reading your analysis. Keep them coming :w00t:

Maybe the last part is a subtle hint that WS did somehow transport to the modern timeline. Since he said that wherever HS is, he will find her. Just before leaving, JiMong had already revealed to him that HS could be someone from the future.. So with this new found realization, the eclipse(door to future) opens up at that moment to facilitate his time travel.. Maybe that eclipse opens up only when everyone has left you(since there is no point staying in Goryeo anymore!)... So knowing this, Ji Mong left first to meet GHJ at the exhibition.. and WS follows soon after!

The part where WS touched his face and then revealed his scar.. symbolises that he will meet GHJ as the true original WS in the future, not the Gwangjong he became when he ascended the throne.

I kinda like this kind of thought. :w00t:

Ep 19 - 20: Farewell to my eternal love

Ep 17-18 sped up the sequence of events in the original novel and C-BBJX. We have 2 more episodes to bring this epic love story to a close.

      Reveal hidden contents

In BBJX, the eagle incident happened during Kangxi's reign. That incident ended 8th Prince's lifelong struggle to be the crown prince/emperor. The attention shifted to 14th prince to take over the throne as he became powerful as a grand general and was the favoured sonwith strong family backing from his maternal side. When 4th prince took over the throne by force - the 8th prince gang was up in arms to fight but were helpless against a very prepared 4th Prince who had Longkodo and Nian Gengyao. 14th prince was faraway from the palace in a battle. Ruoxi was also the first to kneel and greet 4th prince as emperor at the death bed of Kangxi. RX's guilt was extremely deep rooted as Kangxi was a father like figure to her and she knew 4th Prince didn't get the throne through an honourable way. But she knew history was at stake and went along with it.

Hence the 8th Prince punishment to kneel in front of a temple over some incident. Ruoxi prayed on her kneels, followed by standing for the whole night in her room to protest against the punishment. He was eventually released from his punishment but this was the beginning of the rift between 4th Prince and Ruoxi, 13th prince warned Ruoxi to let go of all matters related to 8th Prince to keep him safe but she couldn't due to her compassion to all the princes, not just because of her past relationship with 8th. Things just spiralled downwards from there. 8th Prince's story arch was really sad and I for one felt that 4th prince went overboard by getting him to divorce his wife - causing her to commit suicide. The misunderstanding between RX and 4th prince went deeper and deeper to the point where they had to part.

In the ep 19 preview, the sequence of events is jumbled in my opinion. My version for Ep 19-20 is as follows. Parts of Baek Ah and Woo Hee are not included as my concern is only So-Soo. Points 11-25 could be vastly different from the drama. I just need to get these thoughts out of my system.

    1. GJ plots to get rid of Wook - with the help of YH and Won.

    2. Wook is condemned to death for attempted treason.

    3. Soo steps in to beg for Wook's life - possible that Wook's mother asked her for help and tells her the sequence of Wook's progression into the dark side. Given her personality, she risks her life to help Wook one last time - out of guilt, out of her loyalty to her late cousin, out of whatever residual feeling she has left for 8th. She succeeds in getting his life saved but causes a permanent rift in her relationship with So.

    4. Wook reflects on the sequence of events and figures out that his sister has betrayed him for GJ. By then, Jung will have gotten wind of Soo's decision to leave with him.

    5. So gets the late King's edict to betroth Soo to Jung. He refuses to acknowledge the edict. Jung shows the hairpin as proof of Soo's decision. The sight of his token of love to Soo hurts GJ deeply. Baek Ah realises the significance of Soo's request and is devastated.

    6. Wook loses all hope in his life and family. He confronts GJ for a final show down - tells him the truth about the poisoning incident, YH's involvement and why he couldn't save Soo. He pulls everyone into the blackhole with him - if he has to suffer, GJ and YH will have to suffer along. Soo becomes the collateral damage in this confrontation.

    7. GJ is devastated by Wook's confession and links her determination to save Wook as a sign of her love for Wook. He confronts Soo and she admits to her past relationship with Wook. GJ tells her that he doesn't want to see her anymore and she has the permission to leave the palace.

    8. Soo leaves the palace and Songgak for good. Before she steps out of the gilded cage, she looks back with tears in her eyes and memories of the past flashing before her. Soo knows she will never see the palace again.

    9. GJ looks from afar with tears streaming down his face. Memories of happier times flashing before him. WS is inconsolable but GJ soldiers on. He fulfils his promise to YH to give her an heir.

    10. Time skip. Soo starts life anew with Jung in exile. A celebration of marriage is prohibited between them but Jung is happy to have Soo by his side and tries his best to make her happy. Soo misses So deeply and continues her writing every day.

    11. GJ continues to consolidate his empire. He has spies in Jung's household. Jung is aware of it. GJ gets reports on Soo and Jung regularly.

    12. Jung creates an illusion of intimacy between him and Soo for the spies to report back to GJ, mainly to rile GJ. GJ is devastated that Soo has finally moved on from him and orders that reports on Jung's household must not be presented to him from here on.

    13. In the mean time, Soo's health continues to deteriorate. She knows her end is near. Asks Jung to help her to deliver a letter to GJ. She hopes to see him one last time.

    14. Jung accedes her request. Notices her handwriting is too similar to GJ's. He puts her letter in another envelope with his handwriting on the envelope.

    15. Letter reaches GJ. GJ doesn't read it.

    16. Soo dolls herself up the best that she can. Deteriorates rapidly.

    17. GJ dreams of Soo. His right arm where he was once wounded aches terribly.

    18. Soo gives up hope that So will come to her. She asks Jung to cremate her right away after she dies and throw her ashes into the ocean/lake on a windy day. She wants to forget all of them. She asks him to let go of the past and live on fruitfully. Soo doesn't leave any last words for her beloved. She dies in Jung's arms. Soo finally leaves Goryeo behind. We see a solar eclipse transporting Soo back to modern time the moment she passes on.

    19. Jimong sees the solar eclipse and sighs for the loss of his kindred spirit Soo. He knows she is gone.

    20. Words finally reach GJ and Baek Ah that Soo has passed away. He is shocked beyond words. He scrambles for the unread letter. He finds it and opens it with trembling hands. He sees Soo's handwriting for the first time. Reads the letter while the audience weeps with him. All inconsolable. Ambulance and medics should be on standby at LJG's fan meeting.

    21. GJ and Baek Ah arrive at Jung's residence. Fight ensues. Baek Ah stops them, asks them to let Soo leave in peace after being sandwiched between all the brothers for the past 10 years.

    22. So enters Soo's room to find her belongings - the hairpin, the arrow, stacks of her writing...So breaks down once again. He knows she left with him etched in her heart. There was no room for anyone else. He was her eternal love, just like she is to him. She is completely his person, always and forever. Need more back up on ambulance and medics - many are suffering from excessive sobbing and heart aches.

    23. So takes her ashes back to Songgak. Jimong tries to explain to GJ about Soo/Ha Jin - offends GJ and is banished. So and Baek Ah throws her ashes into the ocean or Dongji lake as per her wishes. GJ mulls on Soo's odd ways and concludes that he will find her one way or the other.

    24. GJ lives for another 20+ years, misses Soo everyday. GJ tries to leave clues for the future Soo/Ha Jin. Dies on a solar eclipse in 975.

    25. Time skip 1000 years to modern day Seoul. Your guess is as good as mine. Let's hope for a good ending with all the loose ends tied up nicely.

Will we all be alright on Tuesday night? I am going to ask my hubby and kids to stay out of my way from 9pm.

    Your thoughts give me chills.

    Let's hoping for the best.

    Eclipses! Gather on! Tuesday night!

  6. It is 3.00 a.m now in my country. I couldn't sleep even though I keep on yawning and yawning. I wanted to watch yesterday episode, so I checking on the raw. I don't understand a word but my heart suddenly feeling so pain. After all, the trusted wall being build up, just a stone hit it, the wall collapse on the ground. It shattered all over the ground that makes it hard to build again. Everything has to start from scratch. I believe the throne is haunted and cursed. Everyone who sits (except Taejo) become coward, paranoid and ruthless.

Hae soo. People blame her insane reasoning that doesn't make sense. They started to question her action. Her trust. Her heart. I trust Hae soo until one point I realise how real this drama is. It has consumed me and literally makes me dump my real life and went back to Goryeo every single time I watched it. She got heart problem, she couldn't take any more impact. Only she knows how it feels. I just hope she leaves the palace and dies peacefully. She needs it. Her 21st-century life tortured her and her Goryeo life makes her even suffer. I want to trust her.

Wang so. The seat surely haunted. People tried to get to you and use you. You have to be strong. Don't dwell on such emotions. You already wore out. You want to live peace and quiet life but end up put on the scary and ruthless mask to protect your loved one. They know your weaknesses and you let them use it against you. Being ruthless does not mean you strong.

I wanted to trust you PD-nim but you keep ignoring me, my wish. You said the journey will be sad, but the ending will be happy. I want to track back the statement soooo bad, but I couldn't find it. :tears:

  7. Right now what I've been concerned so far is how far YH will be punished for her crime for trying to poison WM, frame HS for it and eventually lead to Oh Sanggung death. We all know, WW will be prisoned for his past crime, and the BTS showing us that possibility of YH is a queen in today episode or maybe next week but how GJ will handle this situation once he knows about it. He can't let her go right?

Moreover, the desynchronization of international version and SBS version makes me think that the director tried to bring the end into a different direction.

    Or maybe it just me.

Oh! One other thing, so what if Soo has a scar? WangSo is the King now, as a King he should have the power to make a new law saying that even women with scar (or scars) can become the king's bride.  Don't they have smallpox those days? Smallpox can leave scars and is a common disease in the past.

    Thank you.

Your comment crack me up! I never thought about this, and you bring in it. yoyo01.gif

Ease my heart pain a bit.

@kaoriharang I agree with @antiherofans' point of view. First of all, Jung had a happy childhood because his mother and brother Yo were nice to him. His mother would do anything for him and he could do what he wanted. Jung was in the center of her attention and Wang Yo didn't mind because his mother kept telling him that he was destined to become king. As conclusion, Jung lived in a happy world, where everybody was nice to him. We could describe this as the age of innocence. This is really underlined by Jung's childish behaviour in the earlier episodes. Queen Yoo and Yo only showed their best side to him. Wang Jung had no idea how cruel, ambitious, ruthless and selfish his relatives were. It is as if Jung had been living in the paradise. He was literally like cut off the real world. Sometimes he felt that he was trapped therefore he escaped the palace and fought among commoners in order to feel alive. Yet, Jung never wanted to change his way of life. He didn't need to worry and he could feel alive through his escapes. But when Wang So appeared in S. and this time he stayed for a long time, Queen Yoo and Wang Yo started behaving differently in front of Jung. Moreover terrible events started happening too (f. ex. the attempted assassination of Crown Prince Mu). To me, the timing is important and from Jung's point of view, the decay is connected to Wang So's appearance. So for Wang Jung, So was the cause for their misbehaviour and the misery. I can give one example: when Yoo discovers that Jung had been beaten and So is standing next to him, she pushes him to the side brutally which really shocked Jung. Then she cursed Wang So, while Jung tried first to defend him, until Wang So adviced him to become more responsible and act more like a grown-up. In this scene, Jung witnessed how unjust and irrational his mother is, but he is also criticised for his own behavior. Jung had never been treated this way before: noone had ever lectured him. So he feels looked down. To me, this scene represents the end of Jung's childhood and innocence. He leaves "Eden or better said the paradise". Since he is so past-oriented, Wang Jung is blaming his brother So for everything. I find it very striking that in the episode 14 we discover Jung's past through Wang So's perspective: Here we clearly see Wang So's jealousy. He envies Jung because he has his mother's attention and love.

      Reveal hidden contents

Ironically, the last sentence is ambiguous. Wang So means by it that he wanted to sit on his mother's lap, but it could be interpretated like "he wanted the throne" and his mother was the Queen mother (like a prediction, his wish will come true but in a different way).

Anyway in the present the place are reversed. Now Jung is jealous of Wang So. First, Jung noticed how Wang So was able to get closer to Hae Soo. Moreover, Wang So got the support of Mu and even Taejo. He started being in the center of attention. Even his mother and his brother were influenced. Sure, they cursed him aso. Yet the fact that he was often mentioned and involved in incidents, Jung lost his special position. Besides, Wang So was not afraid of claiming Hae Soo as his person. In fact, he was the first who decided to make Hae Soo his (episode 4) but at the same time, Jung asked her to look at him as well. So the competition between the brothers started really earlier. As Wang Wook was Hae Soo's lover, people didn't really pay attention to Jung's words. However, Jung's promise has to be taken seriously. Then later Wang So even got Taejo's permission to have Hae Soo as his court lady. Jung was aware of the relationship between Hae Soo and Wang Wook, therefore he never tried to claim her as his love. For that, he had too much respect. He wasn't jealous of Wang Wook out of respect for him. His claim for Hae Soo became more concret, when Jung realised that Wook had abandoned her. From the episode 13, Jung wants her as his woman too. He is now mature. Yet the more time passed on, the more Hae Soo spent time with Wang So. Jung had no idea how Wang So and Hae Soo became close because he was busy taking care of his mother and helping his brother Mu. Moreover, Wang So has always been able to protect Hae Soo, something Jung always wanted to do himself. He sees Wang So's strength, determination and immense love for Hae Soo, while Jung is rather passive in the first place. I believe, Jung must feel inferior to Wang So. Remember that he has Wang Wook as model. Since Wang Wook has always been passive, this had an impact on Jung's behaviour as well. Moreover, So is the one who "killed" Yo... their own brother. Since Jung had been raised next to Yo, the former had more attachment to Yo than to So. Finally the brainwashing from his mother played a part in it too. The bottom line is that Jung is not just jealous, he is also blinded by his past where he lived in the "paradise" and Wang So was the one who destroyed his perfect world. I am sure, that Jung must be wishing the same thing right now, like Wang so wished in the past:

"I wished that So would disappear!"

I always wonder why Jung always acts like a jerk towards WS. I couldn't find a solid reason for his behavior.

    Thanks for this explanation.

The only character that I don't and probably won't understand is WJ. He's always in denial mode for whatever WS did. He will continue to be like this after WY died and his mother will provoke him more. He started to be one of favorite character but now he ended up being an ignorant character.
