Live Your Own Life: Episodes 40-41 (Drama Highlights)

by quirkycase

Oh, are we in the delightful makjang thick of it after Halmeoni dropped the bomb that the cousins are actually brothers. Hearing the full story, it turns out Halmeoni was quite the villain herself back in the day. Halmeoni snatched baby Tae-min from his biological mother (i.e., Tae-ho’s mom) because her eldest son couldn’t have kids, and rich businessmen must continue their bloodlines to rule the world. Or something. You’d think they were a royal family in Joseon rather than just some modern rich people the way this played out. It’s utterly ridiculous and, if you enjoy mess, amazing.

On the upside, after Tae-ho overhears the secret, he and Tae-min start reconciling their differences – they’ve always felt lonely, so they’re both tentatively happy to have gained a brother. The boys aren’t about to continue their family’s feuding brothers tradition and decide to work together to save the company when Sook-hyang readies to throw it under the bus to protect herself. Looks like the chaebol tide has turned.

Hopping over to our other makjang family, Hyo-sung is having a rough go of it since being fired, so much so that he decides to take out a loan with the family loan shark. Still, he’s helping Tae-ho behind the scenes and manages to locate the long-sought, missing director who has evidence that could put Sook-hyang behind bars. In a (failed) bid to get Hyo-sung to spill the intel, Mr. Yeom orders his muscle to beat both Hyo-sung and Hyo-do. Hyo-do can’t take seeing his older brother like this and uses Tae-hee’s restaurant’s money to pay off Hyo-sung’s loan. Then, he asks Tae-hee for a divorce. (Tae-hee seriously deserves better than Hyo-do who has done nothing but take advantage of her until it no longer suits him.)

Meanwhile, Mi-rim continues her quest to find her new family’s missing father, whether they want her to or not. (They’re all very much on the side of not.) But Mom eventually caves and grants her permission, although no one really thinks Mi-rim will succeed. Against all odds, her efforts pay off – her police friend locates their father’s most recent address, so Mi-rim and Hyo-shim take a trip to visit his supposed house. After 25 years of searching, this seems a bit too easy. We’ll have to wait and see if they’ve truly found him this time.

Tae Hee isn’t Taesan. Congratulations Yeom. No wonder he was so peed off at HD who was really not a catch.

And reason why he was panicking when mom said she will disown Tae Hee.

Tae-hee really born from the wrong set of parents.

We had TM vs TH, now it’s team TMTH versus SY and Yeom. What if THee goes bad and blackmail TM to keep the Chairman’s secret?

Now that THee knows that she’s not Taesan and she has overheard THE secret, would she use it? She had a cold look when she went shopping with Yeom.

There 7 more episodes, I don’t think turning her into a greedy girl would help the plot.

I think she would bear witness against her erstwhile father and help clean up Taesan. HD , the shallow brother , would realise that he loved her even being a Yeom.

Live Your Own Life: Episodes 42-43 (Drama Highlights)

by Unit

Hyo-shim and Mi-rim end up back at square one after learning that Dad has moved from his currently listed address. But while Mi-rim seemingly moves on from the search to become the family’s clown, Hyo-shim persists by handing out missing persons posters until someone recognizes Dad’s picture. Looks like there’s still a bit of hope to find him after all. Speaking of dads, the high and mighty Ru-bi is rendered speechless after learning that Hyo-sung took out the loan to pay for her extra classes. She turns over a new leaf and tearfully promises to be less selfish and more understanding of her dad’s sacrifices. Who would have thought the family’s loan shark would be the one to humble Ru-bi?

Back to the chaebols, Tae-min returns home seeking explanations from Sook-hyang, but it’s all excuses and more excuses on her part. Poor Tae-min finally buckles under the weight of all that makjang and ends up sick. Tae-hee also returns home after divorcing Hyo-do, and Sook-hyang takes out her frustration by hitting her daughter repeatedly until Mr. Yeom can no longer stand it. Armed with the knowledge of Tae-min’s birth secret, Tae-hee asks Yeom the million dollar question: “Are you my birth father?” He maintains his silence, but his body language — and subsequent conversation with Sook-hyang — does all the talking. Anyway, Tae-hee manages to pluck out a strand of Mr. Yeom’s hair after getting him drunk. Ain’t nothing like a good ol’ DNA test to get the confirmation she needs.

Chairman Kang keeps up his cry baby act, but he finally admits to killing Tae-ho and Tae-min’s birth parents. He confesses to Tae-min that he went after his brother to commit a murder-suicide that day, but he got scared and changed his mind. Through a flashback, we see that Chairman Kang swerved off the road at the last minute and passed out after crashing into some barricades. But when he regained consciousness, his brother’s car had already rolled off the cliff and caught fire. So if Chairman Kang wasn’t the one who actually crashed into his brother, who did?

I think Chairman Kang had killed his brother by causing him to veer off the road. He has to pay.

Shocking, THee did a DNA test and Yeom wasn’t the father. :scream: Being THee, nothing less than honest girl, she showed the results to Yeom who seemed devastated.

RuBi’s father was reinstated. I had zipped through the raw. I find him quite pathetic, even though he’s a good father and often tried to be HS’ big brother.

Waiting for subs. Yeom must have turned on his employer, that’s how Team HS could win and how the father got his job back. I believe his wife thinks she’s doing everything for the family, but she’ll never have enough. An apartment beyond his income, the children’s tuition fees … she will remain a problem if she doesn’t change. If Pil Lip decided to become a loan shark, that would be hilarious.

The mother found out TH’s identity and is shocked, KS the landlady was ecstatic. HS’ father might have left the family for another woman. Another reason I can’t empathise with RuBi’s father, he just wouldn’t level up with HS who had been bearing his burden for years. She has the right to know about her father and she can handle it.

“Live Your Own Life” is a KBS drama starring Uee as Lee Hyo Shim, a warmhearted personal trainer and self-sacrificing daughter who has always put her family’s needs before her own—until she finally makes up her mind to break free from her leech-like family and pursue her own happiness. HS seems to be back peddling in her relationship with her mother. She was unbending. Now it’s back to otokes. If grandma Choi did the unspeakable to her own sons for the continuity of Taesan group, HS’ mum is also playing the grand dowager, her word is law.

THee is not Yeom’s child, it doesn’t mean she’s the Chairman’s kid. Are we going to get more surprises?

The mother is still on her high horse and TH is still trying hard to get her approval. The oldest brother is now raiding SY’s office. It is all predictable, nice too, they found a phone which had hard evidence against her.

But the part that I like is the landlady KS who scrimps and saves to send money to her son studying at Stanford. She’s learning English to go to see them in the US. It turned out the scumbag and his family are living in a fancy apartment in Seoul. She was heart broken. It was so sad. I am sure the writer modelled her and son after a real family. I can’t wait for the subs. This is a tying up of loose ends episode.

The mother approved of TH finally.

TM gave Yeom a bashing.

The preview shows HS modelling for TS company. Most likely a wedding scene will be in the next episode. The wedding dress shop is waiting.

I wonder how they are going to deal with the father’s disappearance. Last minute reunion?

I hope landlady KS does not forgive her son - 20 years?? In Korea? He’ll give some sob story about not disappointing her.
