Kokdu: Season of Deity: Episodes 11-12

by DaebakGrits

https://d263ao8qih4miy.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Kokdu11-12_00.jpg

Being a murderous god of justice is a hard gig to balance with romance, especially when our hero’s girlfriend reminds him that killing is bad. Ironically, this week he finds himself saving more lives than ending them, but even so, our OTP hits several major relationship speed bumps due to his cursed career and impending demise.

EPISODES 11-12

Last we saw our willfully ignorant doctor, Gye-jeol, was on the other side of a two-way mirror, about to watch a key witness identify her boyfriend as a murderer. But before the witness can confirm Kokdu is the killer, Gye-jeol stops him from speaking. Her justification: that it’s unlawful and her patient is too loopy from being in a coma to provide a credible statement. Very reasonable judgment on Gye-jeol’s part, and I’d buy it if she hadn’t agreed to take said patient on a field trip to the police station in the first place.

It’s only after she sees Kokdu in the interrogation room that she thinks of the patient’s wellbeing and hesitates, which suggests that there is a seed of doubt within her. Oh, she’s still a gold medalist at lying to herself — even when Cheol shows her the CCTV video of Kokdu teleporting — but Cheol’s voice does linger in her mind. She can’t completely ignore the fact that strange things have happened around Kokdu. And there has been a time or two when he seemingly appeared or disappeared into thin air.

So when the police summon Kokdu to the station to return the gold goblin mobile that was confiscated as part of the (now) closed serial killings case, Gye-jeol worries that her brother found another way to lure him to the station. But her fears were for nothing because the detectives have identified the “real” killer. Yeah, it turns out that, while Kokdu went on his murder spree at the docks, he spoke the witness’s name three times. Kokdu’s magic glamor kicked in, and the witness saw someone else — a former member of the gang — in Kokdu’s place.

Gye-jeol’s relief is so evident that Kokdu realizes that she doubted him. Considering they’d just had a moral debate over whether murder is justifiable if it’s done in the name of divine justice and found themselves on opposing sides of the argument, Kokdu is feeling all sorts of, well, bummed. Kokdu would be the first to admit he doesn’t like his side hustle of killing bad guys, but a part of him had been able to rationalize his actions with the knowledge that his victims were very deserving of Kokdu’s punishment.

What ensues is our first — yeah, that’s right, there’s more to come — lovers’ quarrel of the week that totally ruins the surprise birthday party Kokdu had originally planned for Gye-jeol. (Poor awkward Ok Shin and Gak Shin.) Although Kokdu’s mood stems mostly from his own self-loathing and fear that Gye-jeol will consider him a monster if she ever finds out the truth, Gye-jeol assumes he’s upset with her because she had her suspicions that he might have been a serial killer. So while Kokdu goes off to sulk in self-pity, Gye-jeol spends her time apart trying to think of ways to apologize for being rightfully wrongfully suspicious.

Meanwhile, Yi-deun is being blackmailed by Chairman Kim. It turns out, Yi-deun was part of the clinical trial for Chairman Kim’s new drug, and Chairman Kim plans on using him for their marketing campaign. The gig also comes with a shady 24/7 “bodyguard,” but Yi-deun still manages to meet with Gye-jeol in private. Although there’s no explanation of how Yi-deun gives his guard the slip, one can infer that he was allowed to leave so that Chairman Kim could find out how much Yi-deun knows via the wiretapping app Joong-shik installed on Yi-deun’s phone.

Because one of the rules in Gye-jeol’s cohabitation contract stipulates that she can’t meet with Yi-deun without Kokdu present, she’s able to coerce Kokdu out of hiding. This is both how they reconcile and find out from Yi-deun that Jin-woon’s mother JANG MI-SOON (Jung Ah-mi) was also part of the drug trial. And it seems very likely that the other names on the list were participants, too.

In the midst of all this, the newly released stills capture Kokdu and Han Gye Jeol sitting facing each other in a confessional. While it is unclear whether Gye Jeol knows that the person on the other side of the confessional is Kokdu, she confesses her thoughts that have been bothering her. Kokdu, who is listening to her resentful confession with a wall in between them, clams up as if he is enduring the surge of sadness triggered by Gye Jeol’s confession.

Kim Jung Hyun Faces Grave Danger After Choosing To Stay With Im Soo Hyang In “Kokdu: Season Of Deity”

Kim Jung Hyun Faces Grave Danger After Choosing To Stay With Im Soo Hyang In “Kokdu: Season Of Deity”

Will Kim Jung Hyun be able to safely remain with Im Soo Hyang in “Kokdu: Season of Deity”?

“Kokdu: Season of Deity” is a MBC fantasy romance drama starring Kim Jung Hyun as Kokdu, a grim reaper who leaves the underworld every 99 years to punish humans in the mortal realm. During his latest trip, he winds up meeting Han Gye Jeol, a female doctor who has the mysterious ability to order him around (played by Im Soo Hyang).

Spoilers

Previously on “Kokdu: Season of Deity,” Kokdu made up his mind to stay with Han Gye Jeol in the mortal realm past his limited time of 99 days. However, it remains unclear what will happen if he doesn’t return to the underworld once his 99 days are up.

Newly released stills from the drama’s upcoming episode hint that Kokdu will find himself in grave peril due to his choice to remain with Han Gye Jeol. Despite Ok Shin (Kim In Kwon) and Gak Shin (Cha Chung Hwa)’s efforts to dissuade him, Kokdu makes the dangerous decision to spend his day with Han Gye Jeol instead of being freed from his curse.

But just as Kokdu rises from his seat as if to race off somewhere, he is suddenly stopped in his tracks by immense pain. In the next photo, not only is Kokdu doubled over in agony, but he clutches the exact spot where he was shot by an arrow back when he was still human.

In contrast to their usual bickering, both Ok Shin and Gak Shin look deeply worried as fresh blood emerges from Kokdu’s old wound that won’t seem to heal.

Kokdu: Season of Deity: Episode 13

by DaebakGrits

With baseball interrupting our regularly scheduled programming this week, our leading lady only has one episode to process the revelation that her boyfriend is the god of death. Although there is a lot of prolonged angst, there is also a surprising amount of progress as our characters finally piece together the puzzle that the audience already solved.

EPISODE 13

I’m not sure if I should be happy or disappointed that I only had to watch one episode of Kokdu: Season of Deity this week. I’m not terribly pleased that this change in schedule will prolong my overall misery, but slugging through one episode was less painful than usual. Considering a bulk of this week’s episode was spent on watching Gye-jeol process the shocking news, I think I’m leaning towards being relieved that I got a small reprieve. Because — and it should come as a shock to no one — love-struck Gye-jeol doesn’t do so well after having her rose-tinted glasses ripped off her face.

For starters, she’s so shocked and disgusted that she completely forgets about poor kidnapped Cheol, who — I’m happy to report — watched the bomb explode and witnessed his sister’s miraculous escape from the safety of a nearby out-of-blast-radius room. The police show up and untie him, but all that action is done off screen because we must focus on how utterly upset Gye-jeol is about her boyfriend’s identity and his murderous pastime.

At first, I struggled to follow her emotions and what exactly was causing the most distress because, I’ve got to say, if my boyfriend told me he was an otherworldly being whose divine duty was to eliminate child killers and rapists, I’m not sure I’d be all that mad — shocked, but probably not mad. So after some time apart, which gives Gye-jeol the freedom to process her emotions and put words to them, we learn that the part that upsets her the most is the fact that he’s immortal. Going to be reallllly hard to do the whole having a family and growing old together thing if Kokdu doesn’t age or die.

Gye-jeol’s rejection leaves Kokdu appropriately distraught, a regular old bundle of sadness because he can’t fault Gye-jeol for being upset that the reality of their situation does not align with the happy future she envisioned for herself. Once again, Kim Jung-hyun proves he’s largely carrying this drama on his shoulders because when he broke down in front of Gak Shin — oof! Right in the feels. Although I found this separation arc very contrived, Kim Jung-hyun made me want to reach through my screen and hug Kokdu. Cha Chung-hwa was also absolute perfection, too, as she listened and cried helplessly with him.

After stalking a despondent Gye-jeol around for a little bit, Kokdu and Gye-jeol meet in a church confessional. Gye-jeol tries to give back the ring and end their relationship for good, but Kokdu promises that he will find a way to become human for her. When Gye-jeol agrees to give him time, it marks the beginning of the end of our OTP’s separation. Truthfully, their mini-breakup is pretty much over at this point because Gye-jeol is back to staring at her phone, waiting for Kokdu to call, and she has to remind herself that goblins don’t become mortal as easily as the fables and K-dramas would have her believe.

While Kokdu and Gye-jeol have been dealing with their relationship woes, the police have been investigating Cheol’s kidnapping and the associated explosion. Cheol and his partner summon Kokdu and Gye-jeol in for questioning, and since neither Kokdu nor Gye-jeol are aware that Cheol saw them arrive and then go poof during the explosion, they agree to tell the police that they were looking for Cheol but weren’t nearby for the explosive finale.

At the station, though, Cheol is noticeably quiet as his partner tries to poke holes in Kokdu and Gye-jeol’s alibi, which seems on the verge of collapsing when they’re told that an officer arrived on the scene shortly before the explosion and there’s a video of the incident. Kokdu and Gye-jeol tense as they watch the dashcam footage, but — whew! — it cuts out before showing anything. Turns out, Cheol’s need to protect his sister is stronger than his unwavering sense of justice. Thus, he tampered with the video.

During his latest trip, he winds up meeting Han Gye Jeol, a female doctor who has the mysterious ability to order him around (played by Im Soo Hyang).

Spoilers

Warning: mention of suicide.

On the previous episode of “Kokdu: Season of Deity,” Han Gye Jeol’s memories from her past life as Seol Hee returned when she came across the old hair pin she once used as a weapon in her tragic murder-suicide. As a result, she became overwhelmed with guilt and sorrow after realizing that she was the reason behind Kokdu’s curse.

In newly released stills from the drama’s next episode, Kokdu is alarmed to discover that the fateful hair pin is back in Han Gye Jeol’s possession. Worried that their tragic fate from their past lives will repeat itself, Kokdu senses danger in the hair pin’s presence and chooses to seek out Geum Ban Ji (Sung Byung Sook): the person who gave Han Gye Jeol the hair pin both in her past life and her present one.

Determined not to let the horrific tragedy from their past play out once again, Kokdu fiercely warns Geum Ban Ji to stay away from Han Gye Jeol—but Geum Ban Ji is not easily intimidated, raising the question of how this encounter will impact Han Gye Jeol’s future.

Warning: mention of attempted suicide.

On the previous episode of “Kokdu: Season of Deity,” Kokdu became terrified that Han Gye Jeol’s tragic fate from her past life would repeat itself after her old hair pin found its way back into her hands. Watch: Im Soo Hyang And Kim Jung Hyun Attempt To Make Dalgona Successfully Behind The Scenes Of “Kokdu: Season Of Deity”

MBC’s “Kokdu: Season of Deity” shared a new making-of video!

“Kokdu: Season of Deity” is a fantasy romance drama starring Kim Jung Hyun as Kokdu, a grim reaper who leaves the underworld every 99 years to punish humans in the mortal realm. During his latest trip, he winds up meeting Han Gye Jeol (Im Soo Hyang), a female doctor who has the mysterious ability to order him around.

Spoilers

In the new making-of video, Im Soo Hyang focuses intently as she makes bungeoppang, a fish-shaped Korean pastry.

After feeding Kim Jung Hyun the bungeoppang for a romantic scene of the two together, Kim Jung Hyun admits off-camera, “It really is tasty.”

The production team also practices making dalgona (Korean candy made with melted sugar and baking soda) before Im Soo Hyang gives it a go herself.

While watching the production team member practice, Kim Jung Hyun expertly comments, “You can’t [heat the sugar] with fire after adding baking soda.” He explains, “I’ve made it a lot.”

Although Kim Jung Hyun observes Im Soo Hyang making dolgona with slight concern and skepticism, the two still laugh even while experiencing minor hiccups along the way.

Eventually, Im Soo Hyang succeeds in making dalgona as the two naturally ad-lib during the scene.

Kokdu: Season of Deity: Episodes 14-15

by DaebakGrits

https://d263ao8qih4miy.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Kokdu14-15_00.jpg

Our drama doubles down on the angst this week because our (not a) grim reaper’s days are almost up. As the countdown clock ticks closer to zero, our OTP realizes they’re on the path towards repeating history, so grab an umbrella, Beanies. The weather forecast calls for at least six inches of dramatic tears.

EPISODES 14-15

Although there were a few bright spots of humor this week, our story mostly took another long and depressing turn as we dived deeper into the convoluted mythos that has tried to hold this drama together like a metaphorical duct tape. You see, Gye-jeol decides to keep it a secret that she has remembered her past life in order to spare Kokdu from being miserable that she is feeling guilty over being the cause of his curse. And if that last sentence confuses you, get used to it because this couple is on a seesaw, going back and forth trying to hide their own feelings — or certain key details about curses — in order to prevent each another from feeling pain.

But hey, miscommunications are the best way to eat up time in a K-drama, and when the main villain is a weak ol’ human, the writers have to find some way to delay his inevitably anticlimactic takedown. And because Kokdu: Season of Deity hasn’t tried to be a legal drama yet, Kokdu follows through on trying to punish Chairman Kim through the judicial system, which is (realistically) the only setting in which Chairman Kim can fight dirty and still come out on top against a god. Case in point, on their first day in court, Chairman Kim threatened Kokdu’s key witness into lying on the stand. Instead of telling the truth about the suspicious circumstances of her relative’s death after participating in the drug trial, one of the witnesses accuses Ok Shin of bribing her to give a false statement.

After a bad day in court, Kokdu finds the hairpin in Gye-jeol’s room and seeks out the mysterious ajumma, who tells him that all his misfortune is his fault. Yeah, yeah, nothing new here — except, if I’m interpreting the ajumma’s cryptic words correctly, we’re to believe Kokdu was the Prince Hodong in his life before he was Oh-hyun. And the hairpin is what the Princess of Nakrang used to destroy her kingdom’s mythical drum and betray her people, which caused a war and a whole lot of death.

Ahhhhh, now the severity of Kokdu’s curse makes a lot of sense, but I wish we’d learned about this sooner because it explains so much about the curse and Kokdu’s personality. I always thought Kokdu’s selfishness seemed at odds with what we’d seen of Oh-hyun, and I was confused how centuries of being a god of death and destruction would warp his personality in such a way. However, if he was selfish enough in his past life to woo a princess for personal gain and the destruction of her country, then his modern day personality checks out. Oh-hyun still feels like an outlier, though.

Unfortunately, all signs point to the curse doing its thing again and making history repeat itself. With Joong-shik in a coma after an attempt was made on his life, Kokdu is in need of a new witness, and — much to Kokdu’s annoyance — Yi-deun doesn’t get on his plane to the U.S. for his cancer treatments. Instead, Yi-deun volunteers to be a witness and provide his body as evidence to prove Chairman Kim’s new drug causes cancer.

Yeah, that uplifting we’re-about-to-turn-the-tide-in-our-favor moment doesn’t last long. In what is probably the most WTF scene of this drama thus far, Chairmen Kim hires some men to drop a sign on some poor unsuspecting child in the lobby of the courtroom, and while Kokdu uses his powers to rescue the kid, another hired thug shows up and stabs Yi-deun. I guess I should be thankful that the writers were trying to be creative and avoid the truck of doom cliché, but it was still just as random and over just as quickly.

On the bright side, Yi-deun lives, but he’s in a coma. And he still has cancer. So… does this mean that there is no escaping the curse, or is it proof that they can break it? Not sure, but Kokdu sets out to try and end the cycle and, at the very least, prevent Gye-jeol from killing Chairman Kim and herself.

Kokdu: Season of Deity: Episode 16 (Final)

by DaebakGrits

The finale we’ve all been anticipating (for all the wrong reasons) has arrived! And while the road to get here required an all terrain vehicle, the ending has a surprisingly smooth landing. Most story arcs are resolved cleanly and wrapped up in a nice little bow, and everyone gets their happy ending.

EPISODE 16

You know how a recent trend for K-dramas has been for the leading couple to break up mid-way through the final episode and then reunite fifteen minutes before the ending, thus giving us a rushed reunion and happy ending? Well, because Kokdu: Season of Deity has had so much time on its hands, the separation arc started at the end of Episode 15 and carried over into the finale. While I can’t enthusiastically applaud this decision, I will begrudgingly admit it was better than the aforementioned alternative because it gave our characters time to properly mourn and adjust to Kokdu’s absence. And, let’s be real, Gye-jeol could use the — albeit last-minute — character development.

Before we enter Gye-jeol’s rather extensive mourning period, though, we flash back a little bit and witness Kokdu’s farewell to Ok Shin and Gak Shin. It’s appropriately tearful, and we see the extent of Kokdu’s suffering that he’d been trying to hide from Gye-jeol. The poor god is as sick as a cancer patient going through chemotherapy, but he smiles through the pain as he says goodbye to his demi-god family and tells Gak Shin to continue being mean to Ok Shin. Dawww… (He also says farewell to Yi-deun, but he’s still in a coma so it’s not nearly as moving.)

After an abbreviated version of Kokdu’s final goodbye with Gye-jeol, we get to watch her go through all five stages of grief. At first we see her placing labels with his name all over his desk, hoping she can summon him back (denial), and then there is an extended period of depression until a flower delivery boy shows up unexpectedly on her doorstep with a solitary potted tulip in hand.

The flower (and the many others to follow) was arranged by Kokdu prior to his departure, and Gye-jeol gets angry upon seeing it. How dare he give her a flower when he knows she can’t keep a cactus alive and destroys every electronic device to fall into her hands. In perhaps her angstiest moment to date, Gye-jeol mopes that she’s “so good at killing things” that she “killed a god” — which is definitely not something I’d want to hear my doctor say. Perhaps a career change is in order?

Nope, Gye-jeol realizes that the “flower” Kokdu wanted her to raise was the delivery boy (and others in need), and so she moves onto the bargaining stage of her grief. She uses the money Kokdu left her to fund and open her own mobile practice and charity for the elderly and poor. In exchange for her kind deeds, she asks her patients to pray to Kokdu. I know, it totally sounds like she’s starting her own cult, but really she’s just hoping that her positive deeds done in Kokdu’s name will put the both of them on the Creator’s good side. Maybe, just maybe, he will pardon Kokdu?

Meanwhile, the saga involving Chairman Kim wraps up anticlimactically with a brief courtroom scene. Joong-shik admits he followed Chairman Kim’s orders and killed all the participants of the drug trial, and the prosecution calls for the death penalty. Cue: Chairman Kim’s shock and outrage. I guess I should be thankful that there wasn’t a lot of time dedicated to this particular story arc in our final episode, but it just reminded me of how ridiculously unnecessary this particular god-versus-mortal conflict was in the first place. Chairman Kim never stood a chance, and when the audience knows that from the very beginning, it doesn’t make for good television.

After Chairman Kim’s arrest and the trial, Cheol came out looking like the hero, but he hasn’t been so lucky in love. Jung-won has been avoiding him ever since she learned that her father was the one that kidnapped Cheol and tried to kill Gye-jeol. Once the trial is over, though, she contacts him and comes clean about her father’s identity. Of course, none of that matters to Cheol, but Jung-won explains to him that she can’t ever marry him and tie their families together when her father harmed him and his sister.

And so, five years pass with both Cheol and Gye-jeol being woefully single — not for Gye-jeol’s lack of trying, though. Apparently, her singleness is not due to lingering feelings for Kokdu. Now that she’s a rich, successful, and beautiful doctor, she’s had plenty of men ask her out, but when the time arrives for their scheduled dates, none of them have shown up for various different reasons. Gye-jeol suspects that their lack of follow-through lies with the cohabitation clause she signed with Kokdu — specifically the second clause, which stipulates that she’s not allowed to meet with another man without him present.

Gak Shin, who tried to set Gye-jeol up on a double blind date, scoffs at Gye-jeol’s theory until Gye-jeol whips out the contract and tries to mark through the clause. The red ink magically disappears, and when the dates Gak Shin booked for them never show up, she becomes a believer, too. Outside the coffee shop, though, we see that Ok Shin was the divine intervention keeping Gye-jeol single (this time around). He bribed the men to go away because he didn’t want Gak Shin falling for one of them.

Cheol’s singleness, however, is entirely self-imposed. He has not gotten over Jung-won, and when they reunite unexpectedly as consultants on a drama production, he asks her out. Sadly he’s rejected — again — but Cheol’s puppy-like loyalty wins Jung-won over once she realizes he’s been supplying her favorite rolled omelets to the store where she always shops for the last five years. Either the omelets are amazing or his dedication proved his love was strong enough for him to overlook her father’s identity, because one way or another she showed up on his doorstep and agreed to — skipping ahead — marry him.
