Romance Review » Everybody Has Secrets

Based on the plot outline of a 2000 British film called About Adam, Everybody Has Secrets is put through the Korean remake machine by director Jang Hyeon-su to tell a clever and fun story different from most Korean romances. The film works completely in the name of entertainment, as sex is treated like a joke here and morality isn't given a second glance. If you can take everything for what it is on the surface, a semi-ambitious, unique romantic-comedy, then there shouldn't be much trouble in getting past the narrative and character-relationship flaws.

Mi-yeong, having dumped her boyfriend in the first scene because he doesn't excite her, spots Su-hyeon at her nightclub while she sings jazz on stage. She strikes up a conversation with him, and every single thing he does is so absolutely perfect that she falls head over heels in love with him. He meets the family, which includes Mi-yeong's two sisters, brother and mother, and he makes a good impression there as well, instantly gaining the family's approval. However, when he proposes to Mi-yeong, only a third of the way into the film, we see that he did more with the family then gain approval.

The well-constructed structure is apparent at this point when Su-hyeon's first relationship speeds by, he consistently acting out the part of the perfect boyfriend, and ending a quick love story neatly. Along the way, we see hints of oddity, or slight holes, and the answers are soon given once the perspective switches to Mi-yeong's sister, Seon-yeong, for the second part of the film. We get a freeze frame, a quote about love, and her series of escalating encounters with Su-hyeon. The great part about the structure is that this second relationship is going on during the same general timeline, in between those holes that the first relationship left open.

It doesn't stop there though, as Su-hyeon involves himself very humorously in Mi-yeong's brother's problems, and doesn't keep himself from even the oldest, married sister as well. It's all treated comically at this point, but for a few chuckles, the film ditches any emotional credibility. The first relationship sped by so fast, and that sister was only depicted in an unlikable light, so there isn't much going in the romance area there. The second sister is utterly annoying after a while, and the extra time committed to her only makes the experience more grating and repetitive. The brother and third sister are the best parts and seemed highly favorable in comparison. By the time the second relationship ended, I was feeling a bit wary of watching the process repeat itself, as I felt the movie should be over at that one hour ten minute mark. However, the last thirty minutes continue on in ways more interesting that one would expect by finding the right combination between speed and substance, especially when the story ties together.

The piece that holds it all together though is Lee Byung-hun as Su-hyeon, who never fails to convince us of his charm and wit in any situation. His character is crafted to be the epitome of the perfect male, and Byun-hun never makes us doubt it for a minute, as he juggles a number of problems, wins over everyone around him and seduces women without breaking a sweat. It's also another nice change in the Korean romance genre to see a guy without flaws, playing the field, and still being able to remain the most likable character in the film by far. Su-heyon is simply a very different and far more positive depiction of the male from say, the bumbling Cha Tae-hyun in My Sassy Girl, and it's interesting to get some variety.

While the entire picture is a light ride that may not leave you bored, you may still come away from the first hour feeling somewhat annoyed that you got nothing really out of it, except the set-up of the structure and story for a nice final thirty minutes and ending. Still, I can definitely see the many merits in Everybody Has Secrets, and the possibility of someone falling in love with it as well. The film just stands out as a good romantic-comedy, not an excellent one, and that should be enough for aficionados to warrant a viewing.

Everyone truly has a SECRET, Congratulations to Chu Sang Mi on her upcoming wedding ^^

Secret signposts to future happiness

04212237.jpg

Chu Sang-mi

Some say love and marriage are two different things, but Chu Sang-mi and Lee Seok-jun have decided that they’re the same.

After a five-year love affair, the two will tie the knot on Nov. 5 at Onnuri Church.

The wedding will be private and officiated by Pastor Ha Yong-jo.

Chu and Lee met in 2003 when they were starring in the musical “The Sorrows of Young Werther.”

Since then, the two have dated secretly and signaled their emotions with a code.

“We blinked our eyes when saying ‘I love you,’” said Chu. “No one really noticed.”

But the secret signs soon became public when Lee publicly proposed to Chu on Jan. 4, after his “Hedwig” performance.

“He sang me a gospel song and gave me a ring in front of around 300 people,” said Chu. “On the night of the proposal, I fell asleep feeling blessed.”

Lee said he made his proposal after deciding that Chu had qualities that made her a woman whom he could respect in all aspects of life.

Chu said, “Until now, I lived only for myself but when I get married that will change.”

English translation by lee.lena based on the above captures.

僕は「ジウ」と名前で

彼女は僕のことを「オッパ」と呼んでいます。

彼女はお酒が本当に強くて

LBH:

I call her by her name, "Jiwoo" and she calls me "Oppa."

She really can hold her liquor.(-drink)

イ・ビョンホンさんは飲み会に来ても、ぱっと飲んでさっさと家に帰ってしまうんです。

わたしがどれくらいお酒が強いかなんて知らないと思います。

CJW:

Even if he comes to the drinking party, he goes back home immediately as soon as he finishes his drinks.

I think he has no idea how much I can drink.

僕が見た時、チェ・ジウさんはすごい勢いでずーっと飲み続けてましたね。

じゃあ、あの時は特別だったのかな・・・・。

LBH:

What happened is that when I saw her, she has been drinking like crazy for quite a while.

I guess....it might have been a special version at that time.

酔うと、イ・ビョンホンさんは歌い出すんですけれど

私は隣で手拍子して、盛り上げるんですよ。

CJW

When LBH gets drunk, he begins to sing, though....I boost him (at the party ) by clapping my hands next to him.

LBH

When seeing her next to me, she seemed to really enjoy herself during the bed scene.

(Note: this must be referring to EHAS bed scene)

プライベート トーク中

BHJW private conversation

何色を買ったの?

CJW: What kind of color did you get?

(Maybe it's LBH's jeans. – lena)

ブラウン

LBH: Brown.

この床みたいな色?

CJW: Is it the color like this flooring? Same color?

この色とは違うよ。

LBH: Not color like this.

ふたりとも、ジーンズが好きなんだね。

Mr. Song : Both of you like jeans, aren't you?

私、日本には3本 持って来たのよ。

CJW: I come to Japan with three pairs of jeans.

Thanks to horang for the Japanese transcript of the clip, Ping for the Chinese translation.

The first part of the vod, the interview.

Fuji TV program "韓タメ(Kan-tame)

Jw: It was not so strain to do the love scene readily with Mr. Lee BH because we got along very well before.

Interviewer: What do you usually call each other?

Bh: I call her "Jiwoo" and she is calling me "Oppa".

(bh pronounced "j©iwoo-yah".)

Cut005_0001.jpg

MC: When the woman calls an intimate, senior man in term of elder brother, Oppa is used. Is it likely to call the lover and the master Oppa?

Mmmm.. . Two people who exchanged glances as hot as newly-married couple. Such a secret between each other has leapt out, too.

Cut00139617-33-57.jpg

Bh: Choi Jiwoo is a strong drinker. To finish the drink in one gulp, she can win, isn’t it?

Jw: When Lee Byung Hun comes for gathering, after the drinks he will go home immediately.

Until now I do not think that he knows how much strong sake I can drink.

Bh: Then, was it special at that time? ・・・ When I saw CJW kept on drinking in great gulp.

Jw: When LBH is drunk he begins to sing. I will cheer him by clapping hands beside him.

MC: During the interview, somehow there is the feeling that they are in the world of two people, gazing at each other, talking to themselves.

The 24-years old Tanaka Daiki(interviewer) looked a little lonesome.

Cut00348817-35-39.jpg

Are they sharing a secret? :P

--- Fuji TV interview --

Female interviewer: There was a considerably bold and daring love scene?

Jw: Before filming I felt some pressure. Actually the bed scene was not too erotic, and is possible to enjoy doing it.

There was no awkward atmosphere with Mr. LBH because we have co-starred before and at the same tempo.

Bh: Looking at her doing the bed scene next to me is enjoyable too.

(Jiwoo hit BH’s shoulder. )

Jw: Seem to be happy.

Narration: Jiwoo strike back to the non-ceasing exposure of herself by LBH.

MC: LBH role is a very fine character. But compared to you, how is it?

JW: He is also a fine man.

Narration: This scene represents LBH’s answer. The scene when photographing for the magazine, drawing so close to CJW on the bed and so hot,

suddenly CJW showed a funny face.

BH: What is it?

JW : Big brother, said something.

Congratulations to Chu Sang Mi & Lee Seok Jun, very happy to see that they have such a beautiful wedding. Choi Ji Woo & Kim Hyo Jin, 2 of CSM's co-stars from EHAS (the sisters) were invited and attended the wedding. I guess better keep "Soo Hyeon" away from the wedding. :P

Nonetheless, it's just clear how beautiful & really sweet the ceremony was last evening. Wishing the new husband & wife lots of luck and tons 0f happiness.

Hyc - thanks for sharing this interview & the translations. They seem to be close to each other, huh? Both of them have good chemistry even off cam. Probably because aside from this project, they also worked together in a drama, that's why they enjoy each other's company. They're both comfortable with each other already. :)
