Tracer: Episodes 1-8 (Series review)

The first half of Tracer has aired, and it’s been a fun ride with our crazy team and their reckless new leader. There are a lot of characters, histories, and relationships involved in the show, and while it might be difficult to keep track of everything at the beginning, once you find your bearings, it becomes much easier to understand all the machinations going on behind the scenes. If you are in the mood for some cheeky, lovable characters, then look no further because this drama has them in spades.

 

In case you haven’t caught up with the show, the following review is divided by episodes chunks, so if you want to avoid spoilers, feel free to skip certain sections.

 

 
THE CHARACTERS

 

At the helm of the show is HWANG DONG-JOO (Im Shi-wan), a brash and unscrupulous accountant who will do anything for money. His specialties are borrowed-name accounts and illegal business succession. However, one fateful event turns his world upside down, and Dong-joo finds himself with a bigger goal in life: revenge.

In most dramas, Dong-joo would be the titular villain who our ragtag team of heroes would be hellbent on bringing down, but here, Dong-joo’s past as a shady accountant is what gives him the tools to succeed as an investigator for the National Tax Service (NTS). As a result of his past, Dong-joo knows every trick in the book, including his opponent’s next moves, and luckily for him, he is still the underdog — which means his opponents severely underestimate his wiliness to their own detriment. By the time they figure out his traps, it’s often too late to escape.

MBC’s “Tracer” has shared exciting new stills from its upcoming second season!

“Tracer” is a drama that takes place at the National Tax Service. Im Siwan stars as Hwang Dong Joo, a new team manager of the Seoul Regional Office’s Investigation Bureau, while Go Ah Sung plays Seo Hye Young, a fellow team member at the Seoul Regional Office who is unafraid to face the cowardly world head-on. Son Hyun Joo plays In Tae Joon, the commissioner of the Seoul Regional Office who dreams of becoming something bigger. Park Yong Woo takes on the role of Oh Young, who was once the ace of the National Tax Service but is now the section chief who doesn’t believe in doing any work.

After successfully wrapping up its first season, the main cast will be returning for an even more thrilling second season.

The first photo features Hwang Dong Joo presenting his findings with a jam-packed whiteboard behind him and captures the character’s determination to track down any dirty money. In his quest, he will work closely with Seo Hye Young, who is able to use her bold personality to her advantage.

MBC’s “Tracer” has unveiled the main poster for its upcoming second season!

Set at the National Tax Service, “Tracer” is a thrilling action drama starring Im Siwan as the unscrupulous and eccentric Hwang Dong Joo, a new team manager at the Seoul Regional Office’s Investigation Bureau. In his unrelenting quest to follow a trail of dirty money, he teams up with Seo Hye Young (Go Ah Sung), an honest and upstanding team member at the Seoul Regional Office who isn’t afraid to face the cowardly world head-on.

Park Yong Woo also stars in the drama as Oh Young, who was once the ace of the National Tax Service, but has since become a section chief who doesn’t believe in doing any work. Meanwhile, Son Hyun Joo plays In Tae Joon, the ambitious commissioner of the Seoul Regional Office who dreams of reaching the top.

In the newly released poster for Season 2, Seo Hye Young and Hwang Dong Joo look more determined than ever to take down the bad guys. Ready for the fierce battle ahead, Seo Hye Young glare fiercely at someone in the distance, while Hwang Dong Joo appraises a situation with a cool and unwavering eye.

In stark contrast to the lazy and complacent Oh Young from the beginning of Season 1, Oh Young looks sharp and alert in the poster, reminding us that the ace within him has reawoken. He isn’t the only one who’s on his guard, however—In Tae Joon’s gaze is just as steely as he makes a serious phone call, hinting that he’ll be a force to be reckoned with in Season 2.

With SBS’s “Through the Darkness” out of the picture, MBC’s “Tracer” enjoyed a substantial boost in its viewership ratings!

On March 18, “Tracer” achieved its highest ratings thus far this season. According to Nielsen Korea, the latest episode of the drama starring Im Siwan and Go Ah Sung scored an average nationwide rating of 8.1 percent, setting a new personal record for Season 2.

Meanwhile, among the key demographic of viewers ages 20 to 49, “Tracer” earned an average rating of 2.1 percent for the night.
