otomame
Sorry if this video was already posted but on the topic of BGM: Someone made a subtitled video of Byun Ji Sub's "Come Back to Me Again" (the song used during the flashback in episode 19) and, again, the lyrics fit so well. I imagine the song being from Taek's POV "Are you confused because you don't know if I love you? We can't go back to the way we were" "Now you can come to me just the way you are" This song is SO beautiful btw I love it

otomame
I just watched this compilation of PBG singing (from one of his previous dramas "Wonderful Mama") and in the last clip he's singing Nami's "Bingeul Bingeul" which was the same song Deoksun/Hyeri sung in the last episode of Reply 1988. Can we get a duet?
Popular Post shyyraa
I've always thought that little Deoksun and little Taek were looking at each other here. Little Sunwoo was looking at little Taek and little Dongryong was looking at little Deoksun. And we know that both Dongryong and Sunwoo are kinda the supporters for TK-DS. Sunwoo being Taek's encourager and Dongryong being Deoksun's advisor. Makes me believe that the relationship of these characters have been well planned and established from the very beginning.
nearsea
These are all old piece of information but,I was watching this video on an alpha go which defeated a master go player,so this line caught my eye when a teacher was explaining go,--'go is a game for two players. It's a game of perfect information,so there's no luck, there's no hidden moves'.The stones do not move, but can be captured.' This works so well for Taek right? As we always saw how he's open to sharing his true feelings with friends,[regarding deok sun],not hesitating at all.His transparency in playing the game, comes forth even when he was not playing the game, outside the club/or the competitions,in the outside world. Also this,'the ultimate objective is to control more than 50% of the board'.So,this again giving us the whole picture when the game is TK vs JH.And TK came out winning by controlling half of the board< half of the total drama [by appearing in the husband game late].
shyyraa
Not sure if shared. But this the new Pericana Chicken ad using the "I'll buy you everything" scene from the drama. Except the dialogue was changed with a voiceover by Bogum. Hahaha What do you want to eat? I'll buy you chicken! Alright, I'll buy Pericana for you~

lxands
On Friday, January 29, 2016 at 10:53 AM, __jesse said: Hello @pixiemoondust, I'm glad you read the post on JH. Everyone was focus on his failed first love that I felt indignant for his character. So I rewatched the drama with JH in mind, and soon realised how much love and effort the writer had put in for this character. While I'm inclined to assume DS' first love was SW, I haven't yet found a reasonable explanation for JB's arcade scene. We'll have to resolve that someday. But I agree, everyone's entitled to their own interpretations and that's the beauty of having a forum, as long as we respect one another's views. It would be unlikely for Taek to overhear Manager Yoo and Top Unnie's conversation. The washroom was quite a distance away, and he was washing his face. They would be careful not to let word slip either because that would affect his condition during the match. Yup, it's possible that DS' passcode wasn't Taek's birthdate. In fact, I considered three possible options: 1. DS' birthdate 2. Taek's birthdate 3. The default passcode '1234' (Hahaha!) Btw, I've just added on some stuff to the post in red. I'm mind-blown. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hi, your theory above is a really a clever analysis abt how TK comes to know DS was being stood up. I too don't think TK overheard DS's senior & Manager Yoo conversations, because it not TK's style to just walk past them, not asking more abt it, and of course by now we know his habit to wash his face after each game (Must have a reason for the PD to emphasized on this in early episodes). So TK must have known abt DS being stood up, thus forfeiting his game right before it starts, wash his face, manager Yoo too was puzzled abt his decision, so my bet DS's senior was trying to relate TK's forfeiting his game to DS's date cancelling their concert date, when we heard part of her convo with Manager Yoo especially when she said she feels weird because DS insist on going to the concert by herself. Actually I suspect a pager plays a major part for TK to take a drastic action as such. But I was thinking along the line DR has alerted TK abt seeing DS's date at the cinema with another woman. After all DR knows how much TK really likes DS, & often probe them to be together. Here's what I think happened, after DR & JH saw the guy, DR leave a message on TK's pager thinking he already started the match. As we know Taek often need some times alone prior to his game, may be at this time he got the message & made the most drastic decision in his career & to withdraw from the competition at the very last minute. Remember it was abt one hour running time of Forest Gum, when JH decided to leave plus the time before the movie starts & more time for JH drives tru the busy street, I assume it takes abt 2 hours for TK to withdraw, apologised to his opponent, drive to the music hall & then we saw him huffing & puffing right before JH reach DS. I guess this is what JH's meant later when he heard TK forfeited his game for DS. JH had a head start of him when he saw DS's date at the cinema but he did nothing except thinking & contemplating whether to go or not to go for over one hour, while TK gave up his important match without a second thought.

Popular Post __jesse
Re: The Chocolate Theory – Part 2 (Click here for part 1) Part 2 is going to be depressing. But I promise it’ll be simpler than First Love x (Tom Cruise + Lunar Calendar + Japanese Imperialism + Korean War + ???) = Last Love. The reason why the writer drew parallels between JB and Taek was actually very simple. Ep 16 was entitled “Life is Irony – I”, and she was preparing us for the greatest irony of all. Irony in the Arcade Both JB and Taek are highly competitive “There are two fiercely competitive people in our neighbourhood.” “Kim Jung Bong and Choi Taek. Something famous links these two. Galaga.” And JB always lost to Taek “Then, one day… he went to the arcade, and someone had beaten his high score. And Jung Bong had clearly been in the first place the day before that. So, he went early the next morning, and… (shows Taek playing Galaga)” JB gave up playing Galaga thereafter. The day after the Gooksujeon Competition, he started playing Track & Field’s 100 Meter Dash. Even when it came to the rubik’s cube, JB gave up and sought Taek’s help. Both JB and Taek have a girl of their dreams JB had just confessed successfully. Not long ago, in ep 15, JB wrote MO a chocolate confession note, and he won MO’s heart on a Vienna coffee date. Taek was planning to confess soon. Now, in ep 16, Taek was going to call DS and confess to her during a movie date. Do you see where the writer was going? JB always lost to Taek. But he won MO’s heart. (Even when he lost Galaga to Taek, he received DS’ chocolate by accident.)Taek always won JB. Yet he couldn’t win DS’ heart. This was the greatest irony. And this made Taek’s subsequent phenomenal victory streak in ep 17 (Life is Irony – II) even more poignant. “The highest winning rate in a year: 86.7%” “The highest number of consecutive wins: 41” “The highest number of matches: 111” He could win all the Baduk matches in the world, beat all the high scores on every arcade game machine, but he could not confess his feelings. He could not win the one that mattered most to him – Sung Duk Seon. Irony in the Singing Competition The same irony was illustrated during the singing competition, and the results unmistakably reflected what happened to Taek. There were three contestants from Ssangmun-dong – DR, Ra Mi Ran, and NE. Both DR and Mi Ran were confident of winning. But due to the sudden appearance of a strong competitor, DR couldn’t even get past the first line. Mi Ran, in fact, had practiced long and hard to perfect her performance. But her music tape was swapped with the egg seller’s and she was dragged off the stage in the end. Their chosen songs were “I Just Called to Say I Love You” and “A Thrilling Confession”. Taek was confident of winning the ING cup. He had planned for this confession for a long time. He even went to Jongro to buy movie tickets one week in advance. But after learning that JH was secretly in love with DS too, he couldn’t confess anymore. DS was waiting for his call, but he couldn’t call and say ‘I love you’. He was forced to leave the stage before he could make a thrilling confession. I Just Called to Say I Love You – Stevie Wonder No New Year's Day to celebrate No chocolate covered candy hearts to give away No first of spring No song to sing In fact here's just another ordinary day I just called to say I love you I just called to say how much I care I just called to say I love you And I mean it from the bottom of my heart A Thrilling Confession – Yoon Soo Il The streets burning with neon, the streetlights Underneath those lights, you and I have met at some time As I get lost in thoughts of wondering what you’re doing right now I endlessly long for that day The blazing eyes, those thirsty lips Even the stars fall asleep, let’s stay this way forever I only love you – those blissful words It’s still not too late, if only you will come back to my sideI will love you forever On the other hand, NE appeared from nowhere and took the stage by storm. Earlier, he was reluctant to even sing in front of his classmates. But now, he breezed through the preliminary round with a ballad entitled “A Sad Fate”. That was all Taek had left – a sad fate – at least for the next four years. The song lyrics revealed his emotional turmoil and foreshadowed the looming time jump. A Sad Fate – Na-mi As I watch that figure going farther and farther away from behind Still, I won’t say this moment is goodbye It was sweet, wasn’t it?The two hearts drenched inside those numerous memories How shall we forget? Ah you will come again You can’t stand loneliness Ah to my side you will come back againBut when that time comes When I meet you again Can we fall in love again? During those days flying by Again, just how much tears am I gonna shed? Afterword Why did DS insist she gave the chocolate to Taek? Well, she lied. She did not want Taek to find out, because SW was her brother-in-law and Taek’s step-brother. Little did she know that Taek had already found out about SW. It was not uncommon for DS to lie. She lied a few times, especially when it came to protecting her pride as a woman. First, it happened in Taek’s room. Then, she lied about the concert. Finally, she lied again when Taek came to her rescue. Whenever DS lied, she tends to repeat herself over and over again. That’s a telltale sign. We didn’t know how frequently she lied until ep 18, so we were inclined to believe her. But look at their dialogue again. Taek: Who did you give the chocolate to? It wasn’t me. DS: Jesus… Why did you read someone else’s diary? Huh? Why? Taek: Who did you give it to? DS: (loudly) I gave it to you! Taek: You want to die? It wasn’t me! DS: (softly) Yeah, it was. It wasn’t you? (avoiding eye contact) Yeah, it was. Taek: I’ll come back after a smoke. (Taek leaves) DS: It was you! Taek: (off camera) I told you, it wasn’t me! DS: (after Taek left) Geez… it was him. It’s been almost 30 years, so I guess he forgot. He was so smart back then, too. Just moments earlier, DS was reading her diary. She should remember exactly who, how and when she gave the chocolate. But she quickly lowered her voice and avoided eye contact. Taek knew her too well. He could tell immediately that she was lying, so he excused himself to avoid further conflict. Only after Taek left did she continue to insist her stand to the reporter. Why did the writer spend so much time and effort focusing on the denim jacket incident? Just like how DS and Taek had a baduk dress code, BR and SW had a denim dress code. When DS wore BR’s denim jacket, SW immediately recognized it was BR’s. Later, when preparing to be tutored by BR, SW insisted on wearing a damp denim shirt. So when BR threw a fit and made DS run all the way back from school to return the jacket, what it really meant was: DS, you better return SW to BR. Also, DS was coloring a heart with a long pencil lead, when we hear BR’s voice and the pencil lead broke. This storytelling technique is known as non-simultaneous sound, where diegetic sound comes earlier or later than the images it accompanies. We heard BR’s voice first before we saw her face. This technique was applied here to help us draw a connection between these two scenes. DS: Shush. My first love depends on this. BR: I’m going to a club trip today. (DS’ pencil lead breaks) DS’ coloring conquest was interrupted by BR’s voice. This foreshadowed DS’ first love being ruined by BR. The pencil lead broke; her first love was doomed to fail. My heart feels heavy every time I think about this theory. I think about all the sleeping pills Taek had popped to tide him over sleepless nights. Of course, we would all be happier, if we choose to believe that DS’ first love was Taek. But was that what the writer really meant? I’d leave it to you to judge. But if you tell me that this theory does not follow the script, then I do not know what is the script anymore.

__jesse
@lxands Regarding the pager theory, that sounds reasonable, but I rewatched that part, and Taek washed his face before DR and JH spotted the cheating guy. So that wouldn't flow chronologically. It could be possible that Taek knew what happened just by observing DS. But the more realist side of me thinks that he'd need a more definite answer before forfeiting a match. After all, it was the very first match he forfeited in his professional career.

nearsea
@lxands To me it seemed like pager theory may not work that way. There is a reason that they emphasized TK's face washing scene...it was him contemplating and doing calculations in his mind. The intention is very loud and clear. He's forfeiting the game and going to save DS.His manager and gf are discussing DS's state of woe here, being stood up and still went ahead to watch the concert, the gf was puzzled why.And we know the actual situation with her. Also we saw that scene when TK is in the foreground, scanning DS's impromptu dress up,and the slippers,so he must have figured out her situation, the fact that she was hesitating to confess that she's been stood up,and went along with her lie. There might not be any underlying meaning behind this part. I think the pager was there to use as a plot device for DS's story.First she got the news from the date that he was not going to appear, and then at JH's car,she kept looking at the pager thinking TK must have left her a message, again in vain. Also, pager was used for sunwoo-bora.I guess PD-shin giving us proof here that the color theories had been here all along, and that we were right about the colors lol.Purple pager-belongs to SW,which is bora, and Red to Bora, vice versa. There's no way that DR could have sent any text to TK,as he was with JH all that time, and they had to collect the tickets, and got into the theater to watch forrest gump.We did not even see any change in DR's face after seeing DS's date with another girl.He was not TK's confidante there.Lol,he does not even remember by this time I guess that TK used to like DS,there was never any mention from either sun woo/DR's side about TK's feelings after the time jump occurred.
