Love, Loan Sharks and Lee Seo Jin

Loan sharks are as necessary to Korean drama as water is to fish. They are cupids with brass knuckles, traumatizing Kdrama heroines into sketchy arrangements, where – after misunderstandings, humiliation, heavy labor, and disheartening setbacks – they ultimately find love and economic security. At least, that is the typical scenario.

The loan shark has been as necessary to Lee Seo Jin’s dramas as to anyone else’s, but with a difference. Check out the twists on the loan shark/love/LSJ triangle in his last three romance dramas.

Marriage Contract

The hero is as mean as the loan sharks. I guess you could say LSJ rescues our heroine from the loan sharks. But he doesn’t do it for love (at least, not for love of her). There’s a steep price indeed! Maybe she should’ve just gotten herself a lawyer.

Wonderful Days

The heroine is a loan shark. Sort of. LSJ’s childhood sweetheart works for loan sharks. She is such an effective persuader that their rougher tactics are rarely called for. She has her reasons for this unconventional career choice, but since Lee Seo Jin is a prosecutor… awkward!

Alas, her bravado, quick thinking and stellar negotiation skills are dust in the wind once she abandons her unwomanly calling to assume her “rightful” role as wife and daughter-in-law. In fact, for the second half of the drama, she creates one mess after another by impulsively acting on misperceptions. This is utterly inconsistent with her previous street smarts. She’s not really cut out for Korean family life – she was better at debt collecting!

Lovers

LSJ is the loan shark. In one of LSJ’s most popular dramas, we see in flashbacks that he used to be a loan shark. He has moved on to more exalted gang roles and then to rehabilitation by the time we meet him, but his girlfriend remains as a reminder of the bad old days – they met when he was shaking down her father!

Loan Sharks in Real Life

On a more serious note, loan sharks are not just a humorous Kdrama plot device. Predatory lending is an actual and serious problem in South Korea. This 2009 article shows loan sharking complaints steadily climbing, and it is clear from this 2016 article describing a crackdown by Seoul’s metropolitan police that the situation has continued to worsen. The U.S. State Department draws a connection between loan sharking and human trafficking. Let’s hope the next Korean President will make predatory lending a priority on a national scale (improving women’s rights and the economy would also help).

Yoon Yeo Jung Has Nothing But Praise For Lee Seo Jin’s Behavior Towards The Elderly

Actress Yoon Yeo Jung complimented Lee Seo Jin for the way he treated her and Shin Goo on “Youn’s Kitchen.”

During a recent interview, Yoon Yeo Jung revealed that Lee Seo Jin’s acts of kindness were all genuine. “I was really surprised by the way Lee Seo Jin looked after us. He worked so hard while filming ‘Youn’s Kitchen,’ shopping for groceries and always preparing the meat. He got the restaurant ready [early in the morning] just so I could get out of bed later,” she shared.

The actress also described what their daily life was like while filming the show. “After closing down the restaurant for the day, we returned home in the evening all tired. Instead of resting, however, Lee Seo Jin always tried to prepare dinner for us. He has such a warm heart. Getting to share a meal with him, Shin Goo, and Jung Yoo Mi was really a time of healing,” she expressed.

She further explained how Lee Seo Jin treated Shin Goo. “Because they had filmed the show ‘Grandpas Over Flowers’ before, Lee Seo Jin was already aware of Shin Goo’s dietary preferences and he was able to pay meticulous attention to him,” she added.

Cast Members Of “Youn’s Kitchen” Come Up With Potential Concepts For Second Season

tvN’s much-loved variety show “Youn’s Kitchen” sadly came to an end on May 19.

During the final episode, cast members Shin Goo, Yoon Yeo Jung, Lee Seo Jin, and Jung Yoo Mi gathered to reflect on their time together.

Lee Seo Jin expressed, “I really wanted to put LA galbi (Korean BBQ short ribs) on the menu.”

“LA galbi is really easy to make. We can’t stay in Korea like this. Let’s leave [to another country], Lee Seo Jin,” Yoon Yeo Jung responded, hinting at her desire for another season.

Jung Yoo Mi then suggested Chapagetti (instant black bean noodles) for their next menu. “Would you guys really do another season?” asked Yoon Yeo Jung.

“Didn’t you say you wouldn’t appear on variety shows ever again?” questioned Lee Seo Jin, referring to Yoon Yeo Jung’s previous statement. “It’s okay to change your mind,” he added, suggesting that it’s good to play hard to get with viewers.

Much to everyone’s delight, Yoon Yeo Jung then announced that she has indeed changed her mind.

PD Na Young Suk Explains The Difference Between Working With Lee Seo Jin And Kang Ho Dong

At a press conference for tvN’s “New Journey to the West 4,” PD (program director) Na Young Suk talked about the differences between Lee Seo Jin and Kang Ho Dong, who have both worked with the producer for a long time.

He said, “Lee Seo Jin is like a friend, which is why we often treat each other very informally. I’m comfortable with Kang Ho Dong now only because I’ve known him for a long time. He’s always been a big name celebrity since my younger days, so he feels like a senior. He taught me a lot about the broadcasting industry, and I’ve grown as a PD during the time we’ve worked together.”

The then jokingly said, “Simply put, I’m comfortable with Lee Seo Jin and not comfortable with Kang Ho Dong. Kang Ho Dong was a huge mountain to be climbed.”

Will the Iron Triangle re-unite?  ”Three Meals a Day Fishing Village 4”.   Lee Seo Jin and Yoon Kyun Sang are coming.  Eric, only you are left   !  !  !  (A Translation)

The news that PD Na Young Suk’s variety show “Three Meals a Day” to shoot “Three Meals a Day: Fishing Village 4”  attracted Internet users to discuss the show’s lineup, and PD Na's favourite star - Lee Seo Jin’s name was leaked to join.  According to a number of insiders,  Lee Seo Jin who appeared in “Fishing Village 3 “ will continue to meet with the audience in 4, while other guests are still in negotiation.  However, there are no official news with respect to the broadcast time or shooting period.

Speaking of the fate between Na Young Suk’s  and Lee Seo Jin, it should be traced back to 2012, when Lee Seo Jin  appeared as guest of “ Happy Together-2 Days & 1 Night’s - Buddies Special” directed by PD Na.  Lee Seo Jin came across as someone very approachable and very grounded, which is very different from his past appearances in dramas in which he was portrayed as someone rich, bullying and cold in temperament.   

After the PD Na Young Suk left KBS TV station to join CJ E * M,  Lee Seo Jin appeared in all of PD Na’s his well known shows such as “ Grandpas Over Flowers” “Three Meals a Day”and “Youn’s Kitchen”.  Lee Seo Jin once asserted  that “Three Meals a Day” must be “miserable” actually “accidentally”  became tvN’s main variety show.  

Whenever they have the opportunity Na Young Suk and Lee Seo Jin would emphasize that they are business partners.  “When a show fails, we will separate anytime. ” Lee Seo Jin said.  PD Na Young Suk countered “ Looking back,  whenever a new show is in preparation, Lee Seo Jin is always there; he is available.”  

Apart from Lee Seo Jin,  Yoon Kyun Sang who starred in “Fishing Village 3” will also joined, cooperating once again with Lee Seo Jin.  With only Eric left,  can we expect the “iron triangle “ to re-unite?

Lee Seo Jin Confirmed To Return For New Season Of “Three Meals A Day”

With news that “Three Meals a Day” will be returning for a fourth season, Lee Seo Jin has confirmed that he will be coming back to the show.

On June 22, a tvN representative stated, “Lee Seo Jin is confirmed to return. We are still in talks with Yoon Kyun Sang and Shinhwa’s Eric.” They also added, “The new season will air in the second half of the year, but specific details have not been set yet.”

The actor will be teaming up with PD Na Young Suk again, much to the excitement of many as the duo was voted the most popular variety show duo earlier this year..

Both Lee Seo Jin and Na PD recently were in France at the Cannes Lion Festival of Creativity on Sunday.  

This a talk they gave about how NaPD came up with the idea and how LSJ has been central to the success of his shows.

It is the most highly viewed talk of the Festival which features some very famous and creative people from all over the globe.  Their talk has received the most attention and views of any of the featured guests and lectures.  (Currently around 100,000 views and counting)
