[Drama 2014] It's Okay, That's Love 괜찮아, 사랑이야

@tinyblueangel I agree with your take. I have no professional background in mental health but access to two pals who are practising psychiatrists. It doesn't appear as if JY has schizophrenia, unless what he has now is the early early stages of the disorder. But with the subtitles from Tudou stating JY suffers from schizophrenia, that I think, as with some/many kdramas, a little deviation from reality is not unseen.

Does JY suffer from ALS? Will writernim pin this MND illness on JY? So far, it seems like JY is depicted as suffering symptoms of it - the right arm/shoulder pain JY has, the fingers on KW's right hand shown to be in pain and losing its flexibility. I really hope NOT.

And now I am thinking, is writernim drawing a parallel between HS dad's condition and JY's future condition? Cos if JY is pinned with ALS by writernim, JY will, in the worst case scenerio, end up like HS' dad.

Writernim, ANDWAE-YO! CHAEBAL! [-O< [-O< [-X

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------About ALS:

What are motor neuron diseases (MNDs)?

The motor neuron diseases (MNDs) are a group of progressive neurological disorders that destroy motor neurons, the cells that control essential voluntary muscle activity such as speaking, walking, breathing, and swallowing.  Normally, messages from nerve cells in the brain (called upper motor neurons) are transmitted to nerve cells in the brain stem and spinal cord (called lower motor neurons) and from them to particular muscles.  Upper motor neurons direct the lower motor neurons to produce movements such as walking or chewing.  Lower motor neurons control movement in the arms, legs, chest, face, throat, and tongue.  Spinal motor neurons are also called anterior horn cells.  Upper motor neurons are also called corticospinal neurons.

When there are disruptions in the signals between the lowest motor neurons and the muscle, the muscles do not work properly; the muscles gradually weaken and may begin wasting away and develop uncontrollable twitching (called fasciculations).  When there are disruptions in the signals between the upper motor neurons and the lower motor neurons, the limb muscles develop stiffness (called spasticity), movements become slow and effortful, and tendon reflexes such as knee and ankle jerks become overactive.  Over time, the ability to control voluntary movement can be lost.

What are the symptoms of motor neuron diseases?

A brief description of the symptoms of some of the more common MNDs follows.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also called Lou Gehrig's disease or classical motor neuron disease, is a progressive, ultimately fatal disorder that disrupts signals to all voluntary muscles.  Many doctors use the terms motor neuron disease and ALS interchangeably.  Both upper and lower motor neurons are affected.  Symptoms are usually noticed first in the arms and hands, legs, or swallowing muscles.  Approximately 75 percent of people with classic ALS will develop weakness and wasting of the bulbar muscles (muscles that control speech, swallowing, and chewing).  Muscle weakness and atrophy occur on both sides of the body.  Affected individuals lose strength and the ability to move their arms and legs, and to hold the body upright. Other symptoms include spasticity, spasms, muscle cramps, and fasciculations.  Speech can become slurred or nasal.  When muscles of the diaphragm and chest wall fail to function properly, individuals lose the ability to breathe without mechanical support.  Although the disease does not usually impair a person's mind or personality, several recent studies suggest that some people with ALS may develop cognitive problems involving word fluency, decision-making, and memory.  Most individuals with ALS die from respiratory failure, usually within 3 to 5 years from the onset of symptoms.  However, about 10 percent of affected individuals survive for 10 or more years.

How are motor neuron diseases treated?

There is no cure or standard treatment for the MNDs.  Symptomatic and supportive treatment can help people be more comfortable while maintaining their quality of life.  Multidisciplinary clinics, with specialists from neurology, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, and social work are particularly important in the care of individuals with MNDs.

After re watching ep 12 w/o subs.

This ep really got me thinking about the death of the stepfather. If DM prediction is true then both JY and the mom are too cruel. How could any mother do this to her own child...During JY think back as he was talking to JB, he clearly saw his mother lighting up the paper. JY kept it a secret in order to protect his mother...perhaps he also wanted to lock his brother up as I have mention previously; he wanted to protect himself from being abuse.  I still want to give their mother a benefit of the doubt on putting her own son in prison. Since JY flash back only showed his mother lighting the paper and has yet threw it down. I hope the mother hesitated but the husband grabbed her leg and scared her. She dropped the paper after being frighten but it was too late to stop the fire...so she runs out. After this incident she somehow do not recall that scene. At least this way these 3 could still have a happy ending.

This is the first time I was not annoyed w/ the high school girl. She not only accepted SK for himself but was also able to clam him down during his attack and he manage to finally kiss a girl. Happy for these two.

CH asked the girl he cheated on HS with to go out and drink. Maybe he will also have a happy ending too.

I just also realized JY got HS a new wallet (lol)....so thoughtful of him to fill it up w/ money and insert their picture inside.

Hi everyone,
After the revelation of what may have happened in the past, and an implication of what about to happen in the upcoming episodes, I am imagining myself, on my knees, rubbing my hands together, pleading for the writer with tears in my eyes to make everything turn out alright.
Great cast, great script, another great drama!

four more episodes, why does it have to be so short?. Next week will be the turning point since everyone knows about his illness and how to help him, whether JY can let KW go. Also JY vs JB and what will happen to the mother knowing she was the real culprit and the one who killed their father. I'm actually worried about the finale as we can see in some previews were HS is alone in Japan, probably reminiscing their time together. It could also be a happy ending were JY appear at the background smiling at her.

@basher thanks for the live recap. you're awesome.Judging from your post though although it's cruel to kill person (JY stepfather) I totally understand when he had to push JB that he killed his stepfather to save his mom. I'd say it's his plainly mother's fault for not taking the responsibility of what she did before. I feel pity for JY instead because he for sure suffered so much trauma and even brought it with him until now. Unlike JB that only thinks about having an unfair judgment and revenge with JY. Such a sad life JY have and not sure how he would be able to overcome his trauma, disorder and all that.

I must thank viki for the fast subs!!

There's a couple of things that caught my attention in today's ep.....

In this ep they mentioned JY mom might have Dissociation.
( describes a wide array of experiences from mild detachment from immediate surroundings to more severe detachment from physical and emotional experience. The major characteristic of all dissociative phenomena involves a detachment from reality, rather than a loss of reality as in psychosis.[1][2][3][4] Dissociative experiences are further characterized by the varied maladaptive mental constructions of an individual's natural imaginative capacity.[cit....taken from wiki)It was stated that the mom does not recall everything that happened during the incident.

Also it was said JY stayed silent during the times of JB trial until the lawyer mentioned to him the reason his stepfather died was due to suffocation of smoke. Only after hearing this JY pointed out in court that his brother was the murder. The lawyer has suspected that JY knew the mother was the culprit all along. In order to protect his mother he had to sacrifice his brother. JY must feel so guilty and horrible. I wonder why JY didn't take the fault instead??? This way he wouldn't have to suffer and endure all this pain...My thought could only be JY also held a grudge towards his brother.

During JY and DM drinking session, DM ask when did he started seeing KW.....JY said before it was just occasionally but since he started seeing HS, KW started showing up more frequently. JY also mentions about compensation for JB and that even giving him all his estates; he does not know if he could compensate for it. (Sorry to say but nothing could compensate for the 14 years of freedom that was taken away.)

Seems like JB does not even know the real cause of the stepfather death. Since he keeps mentioning about how it was JY who stabbed and killed him. JY is keeping the truth from JB and from his mother but what if his mom already remembers or will remember that she was the one who lit the fire???? If JB knew the truth will he let go of his hate for JY? (probably not, (right?) because in the end of the day how could JB forgive his own brother for putting him in prison even if he did to save his mom. If JY would have taken the fault but the courts still charge JB for the killing then it would have been a different story..
I just hope JY could forgive himself for what he did and move on. Same goes for JB, he needs to let go of getting revenge on JY and learn to forgive slowly and forget.....the happy ending that I wish for these 3 is now a little shaky but I will be keeping my fingers crossed)

DM said JY has physios
("abnormal condition or derangement") refers to an abnormal condition of the mind, and is a generic psychiatric term for a mental state often described as involving a "loss of contact with reality". People suffering from psychosis are described as psychotic. [cit....taken from wiki)...... and in the preview his ex wife mentions the peak of this dx is suicide... (I went and took a look at the genre of this drama again and it said "romance and comedy" so I am not too worried about this part. Since when do comedy dramas have sad endings. If HS friend is alive and married with a baby, then JY who also has Schizophrenia (this dx was mentioned by HS in the preview) could live happily too.)

With the CCTV DM ex wife said they could hospitalize JY forcefully. (I don't really see a reason for this since JY is not even aware of his condition...maybe when JY goes crazy then I could understand) She urge DM to tell HS about JY illness soon before JY puts her in danger (seriously, JY will hurt himself first before he hurts HS. but I guess if JY hallucination goes out of control accident will occur unintentionally. Like the scene he almost hit her with his car....)

Too much information to adsorb from today ep.....sorry for ranting

I think there are 5 different kinds of group watching this drama :

   1. Those  who follow GHJ, JIS, LKS, EXO etc.   2. The   "imgoingtoseewhatthefuzzisallabouttype" :: those who just happen to            watch  ep 1  without the intent of really watching it and ended up getting hooked.
   3.  Looking for a different kind of  Kdrama:  if you're watching this drama you will           know the difference.   4.  Medical oriented group : Psychology/Psychiatry ( Student or Professional)             Medical Professionals  :  I believe there are quite a number of people in this                  group. Curious as to how well  the writer can  provide a realistic approach to                  issues rarely addressed openly.    5. Just because. No reason.
Which group do you belong? :x :-*
Anyways, from the get go I was thinking about the mom being the culprit. Otherwise, the writers  would not have make it easier for us to guess the suspects right on just  the first few episodes. But, now. I'm still not sure. 8->  /:)By the way, I'm 1  and 4..:)
