Actors take KTX to BIFF

Some of the actors heading to Busan for the 2015 Busan International Film Festival had to take the KTX because their flight was canceled Thursday, the opening day of the event. 

The cancellation was partially due to the heavy rain as about 100 millimeters of rain was expected to have lashed the southern regions, Busan included. 

Actors including Lee Jung-jae, Park Gyu-ri and Lee Soo-hyuk took the KTX to get to Busan.

An associate to the festival said, “It was chaotic all of a sudden because the flight was canceled, but no one was left back in Seoul.”

The 20th Busan International Film Festival starts Thursday and continues until Oct. 10.

Winners of the 20th Busan International Film Festival Announced

On October 2, the 20th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) Awards Ceremony took place at Haeundae Grand Hotel’s Grand Ballroom.

Actors Kwon Hae Hyo and Jo Soo Hyang presided as MCs with many famous actors and individuals in the film industry in attendance.

Director Oh Seung Wook’s “The Shameless” received the Best Picture award. The film garnered more prizes with Jeon Do Yeon winning Best Actress as well as Jo Young Wook receiving the Best Music award. Meanwhile, “Assassination,” “The Unfair” (also known as “Minority Opinion”), and “Socialphobia” took two awards each in various categories.

Middle-aged actors rule mobile game ads

Middle-aged Korean actors with top-class popularity are dominating the nation's mobile game ad market. From top are Cha Seung-won, Hwang Jung-min, Jung Woo-sung, Lee Jung-jae and Ha Jung-woo.

Korea's hottest actors in their 30s and 40s are dominating the nation's mobile game ad market.

Game developers like the actors' particular "seasoned machismo" image to target the biggest consumer group -- people in their 30s and 40s, according to Chosun Ilbo, Monday.

The actors being paid hundreds of millions of won include Jung Woo-sung, Cha Seung-won, Lee Jung-jae, Ha Jung-woo, Hwang Jung-min. Each has appeared in ads for mobile role-playing games launched this year.

Cha, 45, was the model for "Raven" and Ha, 37, became the face of "Chrono Blade."

Hwang, 45, Lee, 42, and Jung, 42, each appeared for "Asker," "Ghost with Rocket" and "Nantoo," respectively.

Hollywood actor Lee Byung-hun, 45, featured for "Idea" and Jang Dong-gun, 43, for "MU Origin."

The report quoted an industry insider as saying that if ad agencies had used female singers from idol bands or actresses, the ads would not only appear to be lightweight and less credible but also would not appeal to women.

"Top actors in their 30s and 40s can attract both male and female consumers," the insider said.

The nation's mobile game ad market has grown from 400 million won ($340,000) in 2012 to 12.6 billion won ($10 million) in 2014 and 44.2 billion won ($37 million) from January to August this year, according to the report.

'The Throne' chosen as opening film for Hawaii fest

SEOUL, Oct. 8 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's period drama, "The Throne," has been chosen as the opening film for an upcoming international film festival in Hawaii, its distributor said Thursday.

The historical film directed by Lee Joon-ik will be screening on Nov. 12, the opening day of the 35th Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) slated to run through Nov. 22, on the island of Oahu, according to Showbox.

"The Throne" depicts King Yeongjo during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), who locked his only son and crown prince Sado in a rice chest and starved him to death, deeming the heir in his 20s unfit to rule.

Starring veteran actor Song Kang-ho and rising star Yoo Ah-in, the historical work has drawn a constant stream of moviegoers, attracting more than 5.7 million at home as of Wednesday since its premiere in mid-September.

A handful of other South Korean films, including "Assassination," "Veteran" and "Madonna" will also be shown, with the festival to present a total of 181 films from 41 countries, according to the HIFF website.

ASSASSINATION and VETERAN Sailing Abroad
Look to New Shores

CHOI Dong-hoon’s blockbuster hit Assassination, which has so far drawn over 12.3 million viewers (USD 80.35 million) released in Chinese theaters on September 17th.

The film is also coming off a successful North American run, where it grossed USD 1.85 million (as of September 13th) from 26 cities following its debut there on August 7th.

Starring Gianna JUN, HA Jung-woo and LEE Jung-jae, Assassination follows a band of Korean rebel fighters. Due to her role in the popular TV drama My Love from Another Star, which was an enormous hit in China, JUN is a big name in the mainland, which should help to boost the profile of Assassination.

RYOO Seung-wan’s Veteran looked to new shores as CJ Entertainment has confirmed its North American release for September 18th. Starring the red-hot HWANG Jung-min, who already crossed the ten million viewers mark earlier this year with Ode to My Father, Veteran tells the story of a detective who goes up against a malevolent corporate heir.

Veteran had its North American premiere on September 13th as part of the Vanguard section of the 40th Toronto International Film Festival. The film then debuted in US cities on the 18th. It will also screen in Canada.

Lee Jung-jae to act with Liam Neeson in next film

“Assassination” actor Lee Jung-jae has chosen “Battle of Incheon (literal translation)” as his next film it was announced Monday. 

Alongside Lee, Liam Neeson, a Hollywood action star beloved in Korea, will assume the role of General Douglas MacArthur, the key figure behind the amphibious battle that turned the tables in favor of South Korea in the Korean War. 

Lee, who will play a patriotic navy captain, is anticipated to surprise the crowd with a 180-degree turn from the pro-Japanese traitor he played in his most recent flick “Assassination.” 

“Battle of Incheon” will be a factional blockbuster about U.N. General MacArthur’s strategic strike that helped South Korea keep its belligerent Northern counterpart at bay. The plot will center on eight unaccounted soldiers whose role was crucial in completing the mission. 

The cast for the major characters has been finalized with the filming expected to begin this winter.

Lee Jung-jae signs on for 'Operation Chromite'

Actors Lee Jung-jae and Lee Bum-soo have confirmed roles in the new Korean War film "Operation Chromite," which made headlines in August when producers announced they had cast Liam Neeson as General Douglas McArthur.

Lee Bum-soo will play an elite North Korean officer who studied in the now-defunct Soviet Union and foresaw the Battle of Incheon. Lee Jung-jae will take on the role of a South Korean lieutenant in the navy, the very man responsible for reversing the tide of the Korean War. Neeson has signed on to play General McArthur.

The Lees have starred opposite each other in two prior films.

Director Lee Jae-han (John H. Lee) will helm the production of "Operation Chromite," and Lee Man-hee will write the script. The two worked together on the 2010 Korean War drama "71: Into the Fire." The Production cost is expected to reach 15 billion won ($13 million).

"Operation Chromite" was the code name for the Battle of Incheon, a United Nations military operation planned and executed by MacArthur that resulted in a decisive victory and strategic reversal in favor of the UN forces. The film will cover the events leading up to the battle that began on Sept. 15, 1950, including the covert "X-ray Operation" and the "Palmido Intelligence Operation."

Lee Jung-jae to join Neeson in war movie

Actor Lee Jung-jae will star in the upcoming war film titled “Operation Chromite,” teaming up with “Taken” star Liam Neeson. 

C-JeS Entertainment, the 42-year-old actor’s agency, told Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, on Monday that the actor recently signed a deal to appear in the film. 

In the much-anticipated film based on the Korean War (1950-53), Lee will play a South Korean soldier, while Neeson will act out Korean War hero Gen. Douglas MacArthur. 

The film is based on the Battle of Incheon, also known as Operation Chromite, which took place on Sept. 15, 1950. 

MacArthur orchestrated the surprise attack as the head of UN forces, which turned the tide of the war against North Korea. 

Neeson will visit Korea next month for shooting.

Lee began acting in 1993, and he first stole the attention of viewers with his well-built physique. He has been appearing in numerous films and drama series, and some of his recent hits are the movies “Assassination” (2015) and “The Face Reader” (2013).

On October 19th, actor Lee Jeong-jae left to Frankfrut, Germany through the Incheon International Airport in order to attend the Korean Film Festival Frankfurt 2015 as his movie, "The Assassination" has been invited to the festival.

Lee Jeong-jae looked sharp in a black leather jacket, a pair of black jeans and a soft knit sweater. His soft smiles and charismatic eyes stole the attention at the airport.

"The Assassination" depicts the crossing paths and unpredictable fates by National Independence Army and members of Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea, set in Shanghai and Gyeongseong (Seoul) in 1933, as they carry out the operation to assassinate pro-Japanese collaborators.

Jung Jae Young and Kim Hye Soo, Actor and Actress of the Year, "The Throne" crowned Best Movie

Actor Jeong Jae-yeong and actress Kim Hye-soo were chosen by movie critics as Best Actor and Actress of the Year.

According to the Korean Movie Critics Association, "Right Now, Wrong Then" star Jeong Jae-yeong and "Coin Locker Girl" star Kim Hye-soo were named the best of this year.

"The Throne" was crowned Best Movie of the Year and "Veteran" creator Ryoo Seung-wan received Best Director. Screenplay and Best Music also came from "The Throne" making it a triple winner.

The Best Rookie Director award goes to Kim Tae-yong-I from "Set Me Free" and Best Rookie Actor and Actress goes to Choi Woo-sik from "Set Me Free" and Kwon So-hyeon from "Madonna".

"The Assassination" takes the Best Filming and Best Technical award.

The Best Achievement goes to producer Jung Jin-woo from "Do Cuckoos Cry At Night" and "Mugoonghwa-Korean National Flower".

10 movies chosen by the critics include "Cart", "Ode to My Father", "Revivre", "Coin Locker Girl", "The Shameless", "Minority Opinion", "The Assassination", "Veteran", "The Throne" and "Right Now, Wrong Then".

The 35th Film Critics Awards will be held on the 16th of November.

'Operation Chromite' to pay homage to hidden heroes of Incheon Landing

SEOUL, Oct. 30 (Yonhap) -- The upcoming South Korean war film "Operation Chromite" will pay tribute to the little-known heroes of the Battle of Incheon, producers said Friday.

On Sept. 15, 1950, the U.N. and South Korean forces penetrated Incheon, then captured by the North, through an amphibious invasion. That invasion, known as the Battle of Incheon, saved South Korea from the brink of Korean War defeat and played a decisive role in its victory against the North, according to historians.

"Operation Chromite," directed by John H. Lee, will center on a secret intelligence unit that spied on North Korea to prepare for that historic battle.

"At first, I thought it would be another war movie, but upon reading the scenario, I realized it's more of a suspense thriller," South Korean actor Lee Jung-jae told reporters at a press conference in Seoul. "I decided to take part because it sheds critical light on the sacrifices made by the intelligence unit and people of Incheon."

Lee will play Jang Hak-su, a South Korean naval captain who spearheaded the spy operation called "X-Ray." A total of 17 soldiers were part of the Korea Liaison Office (KLO), the intelligence unit.

American actor Liam Neeson, who couldn't make the press conference due to a scheduling conflict, will star as the mastermind of the Incheon Landing, U.S. General Douglas MacArthur. South Korean actor Lee Beom-soo will be the villain, Rim Kye-jin, who controlled the North's troops in Incheon.

South Korean actor Jung Joon-ho, who will portray a fictional character that led the Incheon branch of the KLO, echoed Lee Jung-jae's comments, saying the film will document a critical part of South Korean history.

"I wanted to help show our future generations how South Korea came to be and how these hidden heroes played a big part," Jung said.

Lee Jung-jae, meanwhile, dismissed anticipation that "Operation Chromite" will be his big break into Hollywood.

"People ask if this will be my Hollywood break, but I tell them it's Neeson's break into K-movies," Lee said, laughing.

John H. Lee, who directed another Korean War film five years ago, said he'd been wanting to shoot another war movie since "71: Into the Fire," a story of South Korean students who fought in the Korean War.

"I remember thinking after '71: Into the Fire' that I want to film another war movie," he said, "the reason being the unique charm and drama of war films. They capture humanity in its direst situations."

 "Operation Chromite" will open in July 2016.

‘Operation’ remembers the Battle of Incheon

Korea’s upcoming mega-budget film “Operation Chromite” will pay tribute to those who sacrificed and fought during the Battle of Incheon, which broke out shortly after the 1950-53 Korean War.

Operation Chromite refers to an amphibious invasion by UN soldiers on Sept. 15, 1950, at the Incheon port. The maneuver was intended to surprise and push back the North Korean soldiers attempting to take control of the peninsula. Helmed by the famous U.S. general, Douglas MacArthur, the attack played a decisive role in turning the tide of the war in South Korea’s favor. 

“While producing ‘71: Into the Fire’ (2010), I came across records that said 17 soldiers died during the Battle of Incheon,” said Jeong Tae-won, head of the production company Taewon Entertainment, during a rare large-scale press event on Friday at the Chosun Westin Hotel in central Seoul.

“I wanted to make a film about the operation in order to let people know about the heroes that were forgotten by history,” he added.
Director John H. Lee, also known as Lee Jae-han, joined forces with Jeong for the second time after “71: Into the Fire.”

Actor Lee Jung-jae from “Assassination” will play South Korean Navy Lt. Jang Hak-su, who leads the secretive operation, codenamed “X-Ray.” 

“When I first received the screenplay, I was surprised it was more about psychological warfare than being a simple war movie,” Lee said.

“Operation Chromite ended successfully, but I was inspired by the fact that it wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for the sacrifices such as those by the [Korean Liaison Office] unit,” he added. 

Liam Neeson, who has made headlines by being cast as Gen. MacArthur, sent a greeting video to his Korean fans, saying that he is “excited to start working on this special film,” which will “honor those who fought for freedom and peace.”

Other actors attached to the project include Lee Beom-soo, who will play an elite North Korean commander, and Jung Joon-ho, who will take on the role of the Korean Liaison Office unit’s leader. 

Korean-Japanese UFC fighter and entertainer Choo Sung-hoon will also participate in the film as a North Korean soldier, marking his film debut. 

The film is slated to be released in the summer of 2016.

Lee Jung Jae released an official statement regarding the recent rumored reports about his marriage.

On November 4th, a representative of C-JeS Entertainment announced that recent reports about Lee Jung Jae's marriage are false.

The representative said, "We are very concerned about the recent reports about Lee Jung Jae's marriage. We are going to take appropriate legal actions against those who spread the rumor."

Meanwhile, Korean presses reported that Lee Jung Jae and his girlfriend, Lim Se Ryoung, will get married before the year passes.
