Since his appearance in the pop culture phenomenon known as Boys Before Flowers, Kim Hyun Joong has held the title of “Prince of Asia” for quite some time. And from his numerous endorsements, numerous appearances, and numerous activities, this Flower Boy has been sitting on his thrown happily and proudly, creating his own brand. But ever since another pop culture phenomenon, known as You’re Beautiful, Kim Hyun Joong has been receiving some challenges from @AsiaPrince_JKS, also known as Jang Geun Suk.

After his lead in You’re Beautiful, JGS has catapulted to fame, filling up our twitters, tumblrs, and feeds with his existence. From his looks, to his persona, to every ounce of JGS goodness, he has won over the hearts all over the globe. So much love that he has given himself the title of Prince of Asia.

Apparently no one has told him that the title is already taken and there can only be one Prince of Asia. But is Hyun Joong still sitting pretty on his throne? Or is Jang Geun Suk giving him a run for his money? Here and now, Seoulbeats, attempts to find out.

I. Round 1: Physicality

With his divinely long, silky tresses to his deliciously adorable smile, Jang Geun Suk is a cutie patootie and a half. When he laughs, doves take flight. When he winks, stars are born. And when he walks into a room, knees buckle, jaws drop, and hearts burst into a pile of unicorns, cupcakes, and butterflies.

But then there is Kim Hyun Joong.

From his kissable lips to his twinkling eyes to his perfectly cut face, Kim Hyun Joong is physical perfection. But what gives him the edge in this round, is that one minute, he’s the prince of pretty in Boys Before Flowers, the next minute, he’s the duke of dashing in SS501, and the next minute, he’s the sheik of sexy in Break Down. For giving us his physical best, regardless of the look he’s trying to pull off, Kim Hyun Joong wins the battle of physicality. After all, God himself must have carved this Adonis.

II. Round 2: Personality

But you can’t judge a book by its cover, right?

While these two hotties with bodies have physical perfection, they also have the personalities to follow suit. Off screen, Jang Geun Seuk has managed to charm guys and gals with his outgoing, friendly, and need I mention, proud charisma. Catch him on any of the following variety shows, from Knee Drop Guru, SMAPxSMAP, and Super King and you’ll be in for plenty of smiles and laughs. And what’s his appeal? Well, even though he is so confident that it dangerously dances with the deadly sin of pride, people appreciate his confidence and if anything, his honesty.

But there is something about Hyun Joong’s 4D personality that has had K-Pop fans whipped. Ever since his appearance on We Got Married and practically every variety show since then, has had us giggling and ogling at his bizarre but adorably and charming his behavior. Whether he is in a rage over TOP’s kiss with Lee Hyori or he is imitating Kim Jaejoong’s ‘deflating balloon’ like voice, he has been on the variety scene for much longer, which regardless of whether it is fair or unfair, has given the public much longer time to get to know him and thus, grow to love him as well. After all, how could we resist him pole dancing with a tree? Or planning his future life as a lion? Or feeding his addiction to comics?

III. Marketability

But who has their existence plastered EVERYWHERE?!

Jang Geun Suk who has only recently been catching momentum has landed endorsements from LeSportsac, Coca Cola, Hyundai, Motorola, Samsung, and Etude House. Not too shabby for a guy who has only been catching the buzz since 2010.

Kim Hyun Joong got his start a year or so earlier and has quite the list himself. From Converse, to Lotte, to Samsung, and to The Face Shop, KHJ has racked in the attention from all companies.

But Jang Geun Suk is catching fire like that Sean Kingston song because he is everywhere and making bank. Remember the million dollars he donated to his college? Remember that multi million dollar piece of real estate that he owns? And we’re not talking Won; we’re talking USD.

He’s making bank off of these CFs and while I’m sure Kim Hyun Joong does as well, he’s not making enough to make it rain like Jang Geun Suk.

Winner: Jang Geun Suk

III. Round 3: Ability

Kim Hyun Joong has done it all. He has done the whole idol group thing, as main dancer, lead rapper, and leader of SS501. He has done the whole acting thing, playing lead roles in top dramas such as Yoon Ji Hoo in Boys Before Flowers and as Baek Seung Jo in Playful Kiss.  And let us not forget this Jack-of-all-Trade’s myriad variety show appearances, master of ceremony duties, and endorsement deals.

But being a Jack-of-all-Trades makes you a Master-of-None.

While Jang Geun Suk may not be a Jack-of-all-Trades, he is a Master-of-Something. And that something is acting. He made his acting debut back in 1997 in the drama Haengbokeul Pabmoda and his been acting since, landing lead roles in hit dramas such as, Yoon Gun Hee in Lovers in Prague, Kang Geon Woo in Beethoven Virus, and of course, Hwang Tae Kyung in You’re Beautiful. And not only has he done television dramas, he has also done films, which includes the leading role in the upcoming Korean remake of Japanese manga, You’re My Pet. As a method actor, he has often completely immersed himself in a role, having learned sign language for his film One Missed Call: Final and having gone on strict, regimented diets for his dramas You’re Beautiful and You’re My Pet. He is diligent in his occupation and he executes his work just as so. He still has a way to go but there is something about him, something that he has already demonstrated that allows him to connect with his audience. If he continues to dedicate as much time to acting, to the mastering of acting, as he is currently, then he has the diligence and the talent to really grow and blossom.

He may not do a lot of things but he does the one thing he wishes to do well with a foreseeable future of further improvement. Yes, KHJ does a lot, which is commendable in of itself, but I’m not sold on any one of his activities. His singing is ‘meh,’ his acting is ‘meh,’ and well, what more can I say about someone whose talents are ‘meh’? Not a whole lot.

Winner: Jang Geun Suk

V. Final Round

In the famous words of SHINee, “Eoteokhae?! Eoteokhae?!”

Like every competition, each side has its strengths and its weaknesses. But in what direction does this scale tip? Despite the fact that they’re even, I’m going to give it to sitting Prince of Asia, Kim Hyun Joong.

Jang Geun Suk is a star of potential. He has more talent than KHJ and he also has potential. With time and effort, there is not a doubt in my mind that he will surpass KHJ by leaps and bounds in that area. And while quality should always matter more than quantity, in this case, it definitely doesn’t. While I have compared them on the individual basis of physicality, personality, marketability, and ability, I’m not comparing them holistically as hotties, friends, models, or actors/singers. I am comparing them as stars and stardom is not dependent on quality. Why that is is a separate discussion, but either way, it is dependent on the je nais se quoi that in comparison to Hyun Joong, Geun Suk does not, at this moment in time, possess. Yes Geun Suk is popular. Very, very popular. But not as popular as Hyun Joong (in Korea) and that is why, despite his flaws and even his strength, Kim Hyun Joong is the winner of this showdown. Whether it is something as trivial as his looks, something as personal as his personality, or something as insightful as his “talent,” this boy has got something that has all of Asia livin’ la vida loca. And that is why he is the Prince of Asia.

But I will say this: JGS has got both going for him. Granted, it might not be enough to defeat the blinding, deafening, and dumbing popularity of Kim Hyun Joong, he has got it both. I previously mentioned that he had potential to do even better than he is doing now and I extend that to popularity. Who knows? Maybe one day, KHJ will be a thing of the past and JGS will be the thing of now. For the time being however, I suggest you change your twitter.

Rumors have it that Kim Hyun Joong is strongly considered for a lead role in the second season of KBS’s top weekend variety show, “1 Night & 2 Days.”

According to multiple insiders, the producers of “1N2D’s” second season have discussed the possibility of casting Kim Hyun Joong as one of its main hosts. Some reports say they’ve already sent the offer to Kim Hyun Joong’s agency.

“There are substantial rumors that Kim Hyun Joong is one of the top candidates to join the sequel to ‘1N2D.’ Some even say the show’s already in talks with Kim Hyun Joong for a possible role. But it’s such a sensitive and breaking news that everyone’s trying to be careful with what they say,” an industry source told local media.

The source continued, “We don’t think there’s anything confirmed yet. We’re guessing the production team only asked if he (Kim Hyun Joong) would be interested in the show.”

In response, Kim Hyun Joong’s agency said, “There was an offer to appear as a regular host on ‘1N2D,’ but we haven’t held any substantial talks yet.”

KBS “1N2D” is scheduled to end by February. The second season will have a new production team led by Choi Jae Hyung, who’s most famous for his baseball reality show, “Unbeatable Baseball Team." Kim Hyun Joong Reveals Japanese Debut Album Jacket for "Kiss Kiss / Lucky Guy"

Kim Hyun Joong released his Japanese debut album jacket image. His album titled “Kiss Kiss / Lucky Guy” will be released on January 25. A jacket image that was in red, white, and green were released.

In the different images the jackets give off a dreamy atmosphere creating heightened anticipation for the album.

Kim Hyun Joong’s songs on the debut album are “Kiss Kiss,” “Lucky Guy,” “Break Down,” “U” and his DATV charity theme song for the “Miso Project.”

Last year when Kim Hyun Joong released two mini albums in South Korea, these two albums reached #1 on the “Imported Albums” of the Japanese Orichon charts. It appears that Kim Hyun Joong is planning on capitalizing the already apparent “Kim Hyun Joong Syndrome” that has been going on since his Japanese Nation Fan Meeting Tour in November 2011.

A representative of Key East stated, “Before Kim Hyun Joong’s debut, the continued showcases and events that allowed him to communicate with fans helped build a fan base. He is going to transform into a different individual for foreign fans. Please anticipate his Japanese debut.”

After releasing the single album on January 25 he will have an event for 20,000 fans on February 5 called, “Premium live 2012.

Hallyu star Kim Hyun-joong will be making an appearance in a program that celebrates the Chinese New Year.

Chinese “Liaoning TV” reported that Kim Hyun-joong will be appearing in the Chinese New Year special program “Spring Festival Evening Show” along with Chinese stars Na Ying, Jolin Tsai, Sun Nan and more.

The TV program official explained, “We are looking forward to seeing Kim Hyun-joong spend his Lunar New Years in China. He will be performing a show with a dance team of 20 people”.

This program is not easy for popular Chinese celebrities to star in either, and its has attracted up to 95.6% of viewers before.

As a model for the Korean cosmetic brand The Face Shop, Kim Hyun-joong visited Beijing on January 4th for promotions and a fan meeting. The fans that gathered around at the airport to see him caused traffic all around and proved his popularity in China.

And in the beginning of 2012, (you have) chosen Beijing as TheFaceShop China Tour's first stop. Following this, are there plans to hold fanmeets in other cities?

KHJ: Apart from Beijing, (we) also plan to go to Shanghai, Shenzhen and other cities to hold activities there. At the same time for 2012, plans are in progress for my personal World Tour. Hopefully by then will have the opportunity to go to more cities to meet with fans.

SE: What range of TheFaceShop products does Hyun Joong use lately?

KHJ: I have always been using the BB Cream and some make-up removal products. A lot of fans gave me feedback that they also really like the BB Cream.

SE: Soon, Valentine's Day will be upon us in February. Can Kim Hyun Joong suggest to our female fans how to choose beauty products for their boyfriends?

KHJ: Because the winter days can be a little dry, I would suggest choosing some moisturising products. And since it's for Valentine's Day, then choose something with a sweet fragrance.

SE: Let's talk about what fans are more concerned about - Hyun Joong's work schedule in 2012. Because it has been quite a long while since your last film/television work, is there any plan in the pipeline for new film/television works?

KHJ: Actually previously, there was a plan for a drama, but due to some objective reasons, it has been delayed. But I believe in the not-too-distant future, will come up with something better to greet everyone. And this year's solo World Tour is in the midst of preparation - I believe it will be held in many places.

SE: For 2012, is there any New Year wish?

In accepting this paper's interview, he expressed that although it's the first time he was visiting Shenyang and the weather was very cold, but the passion of Shenyang fans made him feel warm at heart.

For the performance of the LNTV Spring Festival Night, he would be singing the title tracks of his two new albums:

Kim Hyun Joong also said that despite having never visited Shenyang before, he already got to know that Shenyang has a 'Korean Street'.

"After the rehearsal is over, I will go eat some Korean food, as a treat to myself and the team of people who accompanied me all the way here."

First time to Shenyang, Kim Hyun Joong also did as the Romans and learnt some Northeastern dialect. In all seriousness, he learnt to pronounce "Lao bi le" three times, but what he pronounced eventually was still "Lao bi lao". Reporters at the scene were tickled because (while as) Northeasterners (they) understood, his pronunciation seemed to have made the phrase sound more interesting!

Last year was a year of prosperous development for Kim Hyun Joong's career: 2 albums, 1 television drama, and countless endorsement and activities had allowed Kim Hyun Joong's popularity, on leaving (or coming out from) SS501, not to decrease but increase.

He said that he was now moving towards the direction of developing himself as a versatile artiste, be it in style, singing, (or) acting, must not (remain) in the same category as he was a few years ago.

For this performance, Kim Hyun Joong will bring (to audience) the title tracks of his two albums from the previous year, 'Break Down' and 'Lucky Guy'.

"At the opening ceremony of the Guangzhou Asian Games last year, when I sang the theme song 'Sunshine Again' with Tao Zi and the other Chinese singers, the feeling was very sacred. Asia is like a big family and I as a foreign singer, to be able to stand on China's stage, really felt that life is beautiful. My visit to Shenyang this time is also the same. Starting the year recording for the Spring Festival Night in Shenyang is the brand new starting point of my career in 2012. I will definitely bring more surprises to everyone this year!"

He revealed that this year, apart from releasing a new album, filming a new film/TV work, the biggest 'surprise' is that he would be starting a concert tour in China this year.

"The stops that have been determined now are Beijing and Shanghai, now actively striving for Shenyang. There are many people who love Korean culture here (OKT: the phrase used refers to people who like all things Korean) and fans are very passionate. I believe that if the concert can take place, everyone will definitely spend an unforgettable night with me!"

On romance will not talk about 'getting married at 30' anymore

As a super-gorgeous man among Korean artistes, Kim Hyun Joong's romantic life has been a much-talked about topic among fans.

In the Korean variety show 'We Got Married' last year (OKT: The reporter got it wrong, it wasn't last year but in 2008), Kim Hyun Joong and female artiste Hwang Bo Hye Jung posed as husband and wife and the pairing was very compatible.

This caused quite a lot of female fans to be extremely jealous.

As to his ideal woman, Kim Hyun Joong said the quality he most value is 'sincerity'.

"Appearance, age - these are not a problem. Nationality is also not a problem because true love knows no borders."

In an interview many years ago, Kim Hyun Joong had said that he hoped that he would be married and have children by the age of 30, and when faced with this question again yesterday, Kim Hyun Joong's answer was quite different.

"When I said that last time, I was still far from 30, so (my answer) then could only represent the mindset of that age. Now, I feel that marriage should wait for the arrival of true love - it can be at 30, and it can be at 40, or it can even happen tomorrow - you never know; everything depends on fate."

The pressure faced by Korean artistes is usually not light and even for Kim Hyun Joong with his strong build, there have often been news in recent years about him falling sick or getting injured. On how to alleviate stress, Kim Hyun Joong said that when he was free, he enjoyed being with friends, meet up, chat, have a drink or two.

He also stressed that he could really hold his drink.

"My drinking ability is really quite okay. Last year, Chinese fans gave me some liquor with very high alcohol content. I finished it all in one gathering."

As 2012 begins the start of a new year, people are looking for something new.

One of the many things that will change during the year of the Black Dragon will be men's hairstyles. Like the styles from 2011, the new styles will still be masculine but upgraded with some flare to give them a touch of chicness and sophistication.

Not too long away, Japanese actor Joe Odagiri was seen at a press conference for the movie, "My Way," with a new 'do. This particular cut is only for those men who dare to try something more fashionable. One side of the head is almost shaved, while the other side is long. If you'd like to try something a little more safe, Won Bin's hairstyle is a good bet.

The hair in the front is a lot longer than the side and the back. If you want to take it one step further, you can shoot for Jay Park's look or Taeyang's look. The sides of their heads are shaved while the middle is kept long as a faux hawk. The contrast between the length of the hair gives definition to style. A little bit of gel or hairwax does the trick by keeping the hair in place.

Through MBC's 2011 hit drama "The Greatest Love," Cha Seung Won created a trend with his hairstyle that was continued by actor Yoo Ah In this year. Similar to Won Bin's hairstyle pictured above, this style features different lengths in the front and on the side. However, the difference is not as noticeable, giving a softer masculine look. Gel it up like Yoo Ah In to give a fresh, chich image or angle it towards your forehead like BEAST's Kikwang for a pop star look.

You've probably seen this haircut countless times over the years because it is so popular. It is called a "dandy cut," and the hair is cut so that the bangs angle around the eyebrows. Because this look is very soft and gives off a warm feeling, it is recommended to men who have strong facial features.

If cut like Lee Min Ki's hair, the hair follows a more round pattern that gives off the look of a young boy. If angled in more of a straight line like Jung Gyeo Woon's, it can be permed slightly to give a little more bounce and volume. Lee Jang Woo, SS501's Kim Hyun Joong, and Lee Seung Gi also give off "flower boy" looks with their defined waves.

Kim Hyun Joong’s “Please” is no longer judged harmful to youth

According to the January 10 issue of the official digital gazette of the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, the Ministry of Gender Equality & Family (MGEF) has revoked its decision to rate Kim Hyun Joong’s “Please,” from his album Break Down, as harmful to youth. The album was released last June.

This is a follow-up measure from the legal decision made by Seoul Administrative Court in December 2, 2011, in favor of Kim’s agency when the agency filed a revocation suit on the rating.

The court reached the verdict on the grounds that even if some expressions suggestive of drinking or smoking are included in the lyrics, their direct influence on the rise in teens’ drinking or smoking is indeterminable.

The verdict is also based on the fact that the main theme of “Please” is feelings of missing an ex-girlfriend, so some part of the lyrics relevant to drinking or smoking are considered to be necessary to effectively express the narrator’s sorrow over the breakup.

In July last year, the MGEF decided to rate the song as harmful to youth because of the lyrics that mentioned drinking and smoking.

Recently, B2ST won a similar legal decision in favor of one of their songs.

In B2ST’s case, the Seoul Administrative Court ordered the MGEF to revoke its previous decision rating the song “On Rainy Days” as harmful. This song also had some lyrics that mentioned drinking.

B2ST’s agency had filed its suit on September 25, saying, “’On Rainy Days’ has a few expressions related to drinking. We believe that the relevant lyrics in no way encourage or glamorize teens’ drinking. The main theme of the song is just the sadness of parting.”
