March Movie Actor Brand Reputation Rankings Revealed

The Korean Business Research Institute has published March’s results for brand reputation rankings among movie actors!

 

The Institute analyzed 186,994,906 sources of data on 50 actors from February 22 to March 23 in the categories of participation, media coverage, communication, and community awareness.

 

Son Ye Jin topped this month’s brand reputation rankings with a total score of 11,191,240. Her “Be With You” co-star So Ji Sub followed up in second place with a total score of 9,867,251, and Gong Yoo came in third place with a score of 9,042,543.

 

A source from the Institute revealed that Son Ye Jin was highly associated with the keywords “So Ji Sub” and “Be With You” as she came in first place this month.

[FILM REVIEW] Keys To The Heart (2018)

If you’re looking for a film to satisfy your demand for warm fuzzy feelings, look no further. ‘Keys To The Heart’ is a heartwarming movie that will bring a smile to your face by the end of the film.

 

The movie revolves around two brothers Kim Jo Ha (Lee Byung Hun) and Oh Jin Tae (Park Jung Min) as they struggle to get along despite their differences and accept each other as family. Keys To The Heart will warm your heart with its formulaic plot line.

 

A has-been boxer Jo Ha resents his mother Joo In Sook (Yoon Yuh Jung) for leaving him years ago with his abusive father. However one day, he meets her on the streets by chance and takes up her offer to come live with her and his autistic younger brother Jin Tae.

 

 

Jin Tae is a musical savant who is impossible to dislike with his innocent demeanor and childish tendencies. However, he possesses a great talent for playing the piano and video games.

 

Both brothers initially have conflict, further fueled by In Sook’s bias towards Jin Tae due to his autism. This causes a deeper rift between In Sook and Jo Ha, despite In Sook’s wishes to reconcile with her son. Jo Ha merely sees her as a person who provides free food and lodging.

 

One day, In Sook tells Jo Ha to take care of his younger brother as she is leaving Seoul to work in Busan for a month. Both brothers then learn to accept and live with each other despite having nothing in common except for their mother and a pianist named Han Ga Yul.

 

 

The film is easy to follow and has a simple plot line that warms the heart. As the film progresses, it gets slightly cliche but redeems itself by showcasing the relationship between a mother and her sons. The rapport between both brothers could have been developed further but it suffices with the main focus being a mother-son movie.

 

Looking past the could-haves, while Lee Byung Hun never disappoints with his veteran acting skills, Park Jung Min was the one who shone and awed the audience with his portrayal as a man with level 2 autism. He paid attention to the slightest actions and details to make it a good portrayal, one that would deeply move and touch the audience. Just an ending note, you might want to get your tissues ready before-hand!

 

Running Time: 121 minutes

Brussels Fantastic Film Festival to Screen 11 Works from Korea

ALONG WITH THE GODS and HOUSE OF THE DISAPPEARED to Compete in 36th BIFFF

This year’s 36th Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival will screen 11 Korean films when it kicks off on April 3 for its 13-day run. 

 

KIM Yong-hwa’s fantasy epic Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds (2017), which became the second most successful Korean movie of all time following its release last December, has been invited to the festival’s ‘International Competition’ section. LIM Dae-woong’s mystery-thriller House of the Disappeared (2017), with KIM Yun-jin, is also in the competition lineup.

 

Meanwhile, Jay SONG’s The Nightmare (2017) will have its world premiere in Belgium in BIFFF’s 7th Orbit Competition section. The film features OH Ji-ho as a director who writes a screenplay to deal with the death of his daughter.

 

BIFFF’s ‘Thriller Competition’ will feature LEE An-gyu’s gangster action-drama A Special Lady (2017) with KIM Hye-soo, which debuted at the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival last year, where it picked up the Focus Asia Award for Best Asian Film, KIM Tae-yun’s judicial drama New Trial (2017) with KANG Ha-neul and JUNG Woo and WON Shin-yun’s serial killer thriller MEMOIR OF A MURDERER (2017) with SUL Kyung-gu.

 

Brussels is also screening three works by acclaimed genre cineaste KIM Jee-woon, including his revenge drama I Saw the Devil (2010), his period action-thriller The Good, The Bad, And The Weird (2008) and his mystery-horror A Tale of Two Sisters (2003).

 

BIFFF will also screen KWAK Kyung-taek’s supernatural thriller RV: Resurrected Victims (2017) led by KIM Rae-won.

Happy news, a little off-topic at the thread ~

 

One of LBH's longtime friends and co-stars, CHOI JI WOO just got married today. Finally, finding their Beautiful Days for both actors. 

 

Since CJW's husband is a non-celebrity and the wedding was held for only family members, we won't see BHMJ attending the ceremony as JW did for them in 2013.

Choi Ji-woo’s wedding garners attention in and out of Korea

Actress Choi Ji-woo’s surprise announcement about her wedding hours before the ceremony Thursday has garnering a significant amount of interest from the public. 

 

A local news agency revealed a photo compilation of Choi in a wedding dress. As the wedding ceremony is private, the public wondered about the star’s dress. The news agency, searching through old drama series, found shots of Choi wearing a white dress.

Numerous Japanese media outlets reported on the news saying “The great actress is getting married.” Japanese fans congratulated the actress via online comments. 

 

Choi gained exceptional fame in Japan through her role in the drama series “Winter Sonata” in 2002. 

 

As her husband is not a celebrity, many are curious about him. A clip of Choi mentioning her ideal type has become of great interest to the public again. 

 

In an interview with a local network in September 2013, she said, “I prefer a person that I can talk with well, and someone that I can respect. If the person isn’t boring, it would be better.”

With the tag #hbd, the actress posted photos of a birthday cake and decorations to celebrate Lee Jun Hoo's 3rd birthday on March 31.  A special gift of Robot Taekwon V had adorned the center stage of the birthday boy's much awaited big day.

 

Lee Min Jung married actor Lee Byung Hun in 2013 and their son was born 2 years later.

Webcomic Series to the Big Screen
7 Highest-grossing Movies Based on Webcomic Series

In Korea, one of the most technologically advanced nations in the world regarding Internet access, people have been used to read comics on websites for a while. The early webcomic series, which were more visual than the recent ones, have been considered a good source of content for films from the beginning. KANG Full’s webcomic series are the most popular. As one of the first webtoonists, KANG Full drew a lot of attention when his works were first made into films, despite his early series being not very successful. Starring KO So-young, horror movie A.P.T (2006) attracted 644,893 moviegoers, while emotional melodrama Crush On You (2008) and Ba:Bo (2008) drew respectively only 730,343 and 974,554 moviegoers. Those results were quite disappointing in comparison of KANG Full's reputation for solid stories, quick development, and emotional codes.

 

However, films based on webtoons have spurred great growth since 2010. Low-budget film Late Blossom (2011) did well, attracting 1,645,126 moviegoers, and political drama 26 Years (2012) as well as thriller The Neighbors (2012) attracted about 2.5 to 3 million moviegoers each. Moss (2010) and Inside Men (2015) based on YOON Tae-ho’s webcomic series, as well as Secretly Greatly (2013) from CHOI Jong-hoon’s series were box office successes, marking an important step for webcomic series as an original content form in the film industry. Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds (2017), which ranks second in all-time box office in Korea, sparked the interest for webtoons once again. Although the latest webtoon-based releases such as The Chase (2017) and Cheese in the Trap were rather unsuccessful, the Korean film industry remains widely interested in popular webtoons.

Keys to the Heart film review: Lee Byung-hun, Park Jung-min play estranged brothers in engrossing Korean comedy-drama

As predictable as the heart-warming plot may be, director Choi Sung-hyun has created a captivating film about a man who is reunited with his estranged mother, and subsequently, his autistic half-brother he never knew he had

Soon after washed-up boxer Jo-ha (Lee Byung-hun) is fired from his job for his uncontrollable temper, the middle-aged loser is coincidentally reunited with his long-lost mother, In-sook (Youn Yuh-jung), who left Jo-ha and his violent father when he was a teenager. Eager for a free place to crash, but still holding onto a grudge against his ageing mother, Jo-ha must also learn to live with – and care for – Jin-tae (Park Jung-min), his autistic half-brother that he’s never met..

 

While the outcome is predictable, Keys to the Heart does engage with its uniformly likeable cast, as well as Choi’s seamless ability to weave melodramatic revelations into the plot. Coincidence plays a huge part in the storyline; consider the fact that Jin-tae is a piano prodigy who happens to idolise an acquaintance that Jo-ha has just made. Despite this, there’s no denying the emotional power of this well-executed drama, right up to its poignant climax at a concert hall.

6 Korean Gangster Movies You Need In Your Life

Sashimi knives and bloodied faces are pretty much the status quo in Korean gangster movies. They’re graphically violent, full of bad language and scrupulous behavior, but damn are they cool! Below are just a few recommendations from the plethora of great movies you should totally check out!

 

“Friend” (2001)

 

“A Bittersweet Life” (2005)

Sun Woo (played by the beautiful Lee Byung Hun) is the right-hand man of Mr. Kang, a mob boss (played by Kim Young Chul) who suspects his much younger girlfriend is cheating on him. Sun Woo is asked to watch the girlfriend — Hee Soo (played by Shin Min Ah) — and report back and even kill her if Mr. Kang’s suspicions are true, but she smiles at Sun Woo once and it’s all over. I mean, who can blame him, but he is a little quick off the mark to risk it all for those dimples. Though Mr. Kang assumes Sun Woo has fallen for her and orders him killed, the job fails, starting a roller-coaster of extreme violence, unpredictability, and revenge!

 

Lee Byung Hun is superb in the role, filling quiet, tense moments with glances that speak volumes. He isn’t the macho protagonist you would typically see in these kinds of roles; instead he’s nervous, jumpy, and seems genuinely hurt by his boss’s decision to beat and bury him alive, which again… understandable.

 

“A Bittersweet Life” is laugh-out-loud funny if you’re into twisted humor and at times very aesthetically pleasing, but it’s the outlandish fight scenes that make this film worth the watch and truly iconic.
