Movie portrays struggles of modern family

Song Hae-sung’s ‘Boomerang Family’ evokes his family ideals

Published : 2013-04-30 20:00 / Updated : 2013-04-30 21:40

“Boomerang Family” is, as its title suggests, a story of a modern Korean family and its struggling members “returning” to their caring mother. “Failan” (2001) and “Maundy Thursday” (2006) director Song Hae-sung has adapted author Cheon Myeong-gwan’s novel to create a work that’s an entertaining mixture of comedy and engaging, heart-felt family drama.

The film opens with a rather grim, violent scene, in which In-mo (played by Park Hae-il), a penniless filmmaker, is beating up a man who seems to have slept with his wife. The violence takes place at a freezing riverside in winter; white snow and the cracking atmosphere fill the screen.

Then the film visits In-mo’s mother at her simple but cozy apartment. The loving old woman (played by Yoon Yeo-jeong) is making chicken broth in her kitchen. When the food is ready, she gives In-mo a call, asking him to visit and eat with her. When his phone buzzes, In-mo is about to kill himself in his dingy studio, plagued by his failed marriage and career. He has no money in his back account.

201304300013850.jpg
A scene from “Boomerang Family” (Invent Stone Corp)

Deeply touched by her phone call and the bowl of chicken broth, In-mo decides to move into her apartment ― at the age of 40. Then the viewers are introduced to In-mo’s rather unusual siblings, who all have problems of their own.

His older brother, Han-mo (played by Yoon Je-moon), is an unemployed 44-year-old ex-con, who has been living with his mother for a while. His younger sister, Mi-yeon (Gong Hyo-jin), is a two-time divorcee with a bratty, rebellious teenage daughter (played by “High Kick!” star Jin Ji-hee).

All of the siblings reunite at their mother’s apartment, as Mi-yeon also moves in with her daughter after her second, nasty divorce.

Their mother, however, never criticizes her children, nor does she even mention their obvious ― and serious ― problems. It seems the only thing she expects from them is to eat well. She genuinely finds joy in feeding them and watching them eat. The camera repeatedly follows her hands when she cooks, as she cuts tofu into cubes for a huge pot of soybean stew, and as she barbecues pork chops. The movie in fact dedicates a significant portion to eating-in-group scenes, to the extent that actor Yoon Je-moon “gained a lot of weight” while shooting the film.

The film does evoke rather traditional family ideals, where the parents are ever giving and sacrificing, offering their unconditional love to their financially and emotionally dependent children.

“Today’s Korean society isn’t an easy one to deal with for anyone, I think,” director Song said during a press conference on Monday. He said he was drawn to the penniless filmmaker character in the original novel as he also experienced failures in his life.

“And it is comforting to have a place to go back to when things go wrong in your life and you have nothing left in your hands. And most of the time, that place is your family, and your mother. She welcomes you even when you are struggling, and listens to your problems and encourages you. I wanted to talk about that with this film.”

“Boomerang Family,” however, isn’t a drama that only praises a mother’s unconditional love. While caring and comforting, the siblings’ mother is an enigmatic figure. She hardly gets upset, and seems almost indifferent at times; she wastes no energy on things she cannot control.

The movie gradually unveils the secrets of her past, which mostly involve her ex-lover, and these secrets eventually challenge the traditional, Korean notion of biological family relationships. The mother eventually lives her own life, fulfilling her own wants and needs, while still being the comforting figure to the children.

Actress Yoon Yeo-jeong, who played the cruel chaebol heiress in Im Sang-soo’s “The Taste of Money,” makes an interesting turn as a caring mother with a rather complicated past. Other actors ― Yoon Je-moon, Gong Hyo-jin, and Park Hae-il ― also bring entertaining performances, creating a number of tragic and hilarious moments.

The mother has no practical ability or power to solve her children’s problems. But her company and food certainly inspire them to step out of misery. Director Song seems to believe in the power of food to restore and nurture. “Boomerang Family” is a film about surviving the downs of life, and how those whom we call “family” can help in that ― just by their very existence.

A CJ Entertainment release, “Boomerang Family” opens in theaters on May 9.

Actor Park Hae Il released a new pictorial.

Recently, Park Hae Il returned with a film called 'An Old Family', and he released a new fashion pictorial through fashion magazine VOGUE.

In the pictorial, Park Hae Il showed great looks in loose pajamas, fitting jacket, a jump suit, coat, and a trench coat.

His great looks in outfits that seem to be not matching at all seems to be expressing the concept of his character in 'An Old Family'.

He also showed comic looks, holding a radish and a fish, and many people are smiling while looking through the photos.

On the other hand, Park Hae Il's new pictorial can be viewed in May edition of 'VOGUE'.

Park Hae Il has no intentions of appearing on variety shows

By Korea Star Daily
Tue, Apr 30, 2013 5:57 PM

The Media Day for upcoming South Korean film ‘Boomerang Family’ (director: Song Hae Sung) was held yesterday (April 29th) at Seoul’s Namsan-dong No.2 Street, and was graced by the presence of its main cast members including Gong Hyo Jin, Park Hae Il, Yoon Yeo Jung, and Yoon Je Moon.

When asked if he would be appearing on variety shows to promote the film, Park Hae Il replied that he had no intentions of doing so, and wants instead to focus all his energies on the film.

Park Hae Il said humbly, “I am an actor who has a lot of flaws, so I only wish to devote all of my energies into my work at the moment. I don’t have much talent to begin with, so I want to preserve my energy and save them for my work.”

He added, “Instead of variety shows, I rather viewers learn about me through my work, since I am able to show different sides of me. Furthermore, I do not someone who has the gift of the gab.”

With regards to his 1 year hiatus, Park Hae Il explained, “I never intended for that to happen, but a year just went by like this. Recently, director Chung Ji Woo texted me saying that tvN ‘SNL KOREA’ had a skit that imitated scenes from my film ‘Eungyo’. Isn’t it something worth to be happy about for ‘Eungyo’ to be adapted into a skit by a famous show?”

‘Boomerang Family’ revolves around 3 adult siblings with differing personalities that begin to live together in their mother’s (Yoon Yeo Jung) home. The oldest sibling Han Mo (Yoon Je Moon) is a good-for-nothing jobless bum, middle sibling In Mo (Park Hae Il) is a film director who is in a slump, while the youngest sibling Mi Yeon (Gong Hyo Jin) is a romantist who is about to get married for the 3rd time. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Cheon Myung Gwan, while directing the film is Song Hae Sung who previously did ‘Maundy Thursday’ and ‘A Better Tomorrow’.

Park Hae Hil plays the role of 40 year old In Mo who is a film director, although his first film was a box office disaster. In Mo is egoistic, shameless, but doesn’t draw much hate.

Park Hae Il had won much acclaim as an actor with films like ‘War of the Arrows’, ‘Eungyo’, where he showed his ability to make each role his own. Park Hae Il will seek to show viewers another side of him through ‘Boomerang Family’ where he is the only one with the highest educational qualifications in the family.

‘Boomerang Family’ will greet viewers in cinemas from May 9th.

PARK Hae-il

Actor

32zjtac.jpg

Biography

PARK Hae-il has frequently appeared as two different types of characters in his films: an innocent-looking and boyish character or a man with something to hide beneath his friendly exterior. The sunny side of him was put to great use when he played Inha in <Scent of Lover>, an on-screen melodrama about the power of love that overcomes death; Jinguk, the romantic interest of Yeon-soon ([JEON Do-youn]) in <My Mother, the Mermaid>; Yoorim, a helpless womanizer who keeps flattering Hong ([GANG Hye-jung]) for “just one night” in <Rules of Dating>; and Heamyung, an independent activist against Japanese occupation, in <Modern Boy>. His two contrasting characters were cleverly blended in <Memories of Murder>, the thriller film directed by [bONG Joon-ho]. He played a serial killer suspect who was let go with barely any evidence held against him. His innocent look helped the “alleged killer” escape the charge but the audience was given chills for a brief moment because of the dark duplicity on his face. PARK Hae-il reunited with director [bONG Joon-ho] for <The Host>, which he followed with the mysterious thriller film <Paradise Murdered>. Since then, he has indulged himself in the thriller genre. He appeared in <Moss>, a story about the secret of a small village, and in <Heartbeat>, where he played Huido who tries to protect his brain-dead mother from Yeon-hee ([KIM Yun-jin]) who desperately needs her heart for her sick little girl. PARK was reunited with director [KIM Han-min] of <Paradise Murdered> fame in <War of the Arrows>, which became the biggest box-office draw of 2011 with over 7 million audiences. He stretched his acting scope further still as he took on the role of an elderly poet in the acclaimed 2012 feature <Eungyo>.

LEE Byung-hun, KIM Yun-seok and PARK Hae-il Tapped for NAMHANSANSEONG FORTRESS
Stars Gather for HWANG Dong-hyuk Period Epic

by Pierce Conran / KoBiz

jYuFjBDlWRywwmWCpNcw.png

A coterie of stars have gathered for the upcoming period epic Namhansanseong Fortress, from Silenced (2011) director HWANG Dong-hyuk. Headlining the project will be actors LEE Byung-hun, KIM Yun-seok and PARK Hae-il.

Set in 1636, when the Qing Dynasty attacked the Joseon, the film focuses on King Injo (played by PARK Hae-il) and his retainers, who are hustled within the fortress located in Namhansanseong, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of his retainers (LEE Byung-hun) advocates for negotiations with the attacking force while another (KIM Yun-seok) urges the king to keep on fighting. The film is based on a novel of the same name by KIM Hoon which was published in 2007.

LEE has had a busy schedule recently, moving from last year’s hit Inside Men to roles in KIM Jee-woon’s The Age of Shadows and the Hollywood western The Magnificent Seven this fall, and the action-thriller Master due out next month. He will also be seen alongside KONG Hyo-jin in Warner Bros.’ second Korean title Single Rider early next year.

Following the exorcism hit The Priests last fall, KIM will be seen next month in the romantic drama Will You Be There? while PARK recently featured in the successful Colonial Era drama The Last Princess alongside SON Ye-jin. Co-starring in the film will be KO Soo of The Front Line (2011) and PARK Hee-soon of The Suspect (2013).

Director HWANG, who debuted with My Father in 2007, last made the hit Lunar New Year family comedy Miss Granny in 2014. Among the behind-the-scenes crew of the film will be the A Bittersweet Life (2005) and The Age of Shadows cinematographer KIM Jee-yong.

Filming for Namhansanseong Fortress kicked off on November 21st with a release expected to follow at some point in 2017. CJ Entertainment will both finance and distribute the picture.
