Lastly, the winner for this month's most popular movie is "Decibel" which was released right in the middle of the tracking period. One thing that really helps maintain the movie's publicity on HanCinema is the steady stream of new images we've been getting. The story deals with a submarine commander tracking down a terrorist. "Decibel" is bombastic and exciting- not a huge hit, with total admissions of around eight hundred thousand. Although really, with the South Korean film market still COVID-depressed, nothing is a big hit these days.

*** “The First Responders” has shared a glimpse of Kim Rae Won’s past! The new stills preview Jin Ho Gae (Kim Rae Won) from seven years ago on his way to work. In TONIGHT's episode 8, a scene from seven years ago when Jin Ho Gae was a traffic police officer reappears and tells the past stories that he is hiding. Please keep an eye on why he transferred from the traffic police department to the metropolitan investigation team then to Taewon Police Station and whether the symbolic case that made him become the No. 1 detective in arrest rate will be revealed. It's a shame that Viki did not license this drama.

*** It’s a hard fight when it comes to the worthiest winner of the SBS Drama Daesang Award 2022. The contenders are Namgoong Min (1000 Won Lawyer), Lee Jun Ki (Again My Life), Kim Nam Gil (Through The Darkness), Kim Rae Won (The First Responders), and Seo Hyun Jin (Why Her). All are solid, consistent actors, and all are deserving of the honour. I watched  the dramas of Lee Junki & Kim Rae Won and both are always appealing and convincing in their roles.

*** According to SBS, "The First Responders" will not air a new episode this coming Saturday. This was to be the eleventh episode of the drama, but the preemption is being forced by the 2022 SBS Entertainment Awards, which will be having their ceremony that same night. There is no particular urgency to the drama needing to end. The successor series to the drama is the legal drama "Payback",  which isn't set to begin until January 6th.

Summary: "The First Responders" follows the joint investigations of Taewon Police Station and Taewon Fire Station into the darkest crimes plaguing the town, all the while fighting a larger evil that looms over them.

Key Strengths: Riveting plot, Episodic format, Solid characterization.

Rank Rationale: "The First Responders" is that one K-Drama that you just can't stop telling your friends about because you have discovered the diamond that they missed. If any drama has hit the perfect casting jackpot this year, it is "The First Responders". Kim RaeWon brings the heat with his passionate madness, whereas Gong SeungYeon imparts a cooling, comforting breath of fresh air. Son HoJun, on the other hand, is making us swoon anew in uniform with his resolute fervor. It simply doesn't get any better than this. The case-by-case structure is tied together by a coherent backstory, which gives our characters more substance and the viewers more reasons to care. "The First Responders" should definitely be on your watchlist before the end of the year.
