Popularity Ranking?
We need someone to translate this! Looks like it's a most anticipated works ranking? Arthur's look with his Mo Ran dresses did send a frenzy .
On a discussion about Legend of Awakening in another forum, someone says that Arthur's portrayal of Lu Ping is more mature, restrained, and -- this is interesting -- "a bit of an old soul" ;-).

I guess there will be no press conference for Legend of Awakening, since Arthur's schedule only shooting for HYX in May, then they have to boost marketing via soc-med only.
No-press conference has been the norm due to Covid-19. I think nowadays production doesn't necessarily invite journalists to cover booting ceremonies.
BTW, just saw that Legend of Awakening scored 7.2 on Douban! I would've been happy had it gotten around 6-ish, based on the comments and the fact that it made quite a lot of changes of the novel, as well as the low production value. So this is a very nice surprise, though we won't know how long that will hold . Let's just hope it stays in the 7-ish range. I'm not dismissing the possibility that the score is mostly contributed by fanbases, but I hope this reflects a positive reception. It's safe to say that international audience seem to like it, but I can't be 100% certain about Chinese audience.

Well Qin Sang and Lu Ping will get married LOL, but from clips somehow i have a feeling it will be a sad ending for both of them, one of them might die, oh i hope not please, dont make Lu Ping die
No kidding? Damn Arthur! At the tender age of 18, he's had two marriages! LOL.
I'm now at ep 12, and I can see the leading chars romance has been developed fast, but somehow I'm not feeling them. Despite CX's acting (or lack thereof), I do find the romantic feelings between the characters believable. Their chemistry is alright, though I still prefer his with Enxi. I don't think weddings are fitting in a story about the journey of young heroes, but that's just me *sigh*.
I also hope it won't be Lu Ping's death!8 hours ago, Lbpg said:For funsies... it's this kind of show.. I know this is totally random and unrelated, but I grew up with this show and it totally reminded me of what I'm seeing in LoA, quality-wise , of course, updated for 2020 instead of ~1980. The props and green screen is what I'm relating back to LoA. Call it my version of HK wuxia movies? hahaha Here the super hero (who's dressed as a cricket) is saving the world from space pirates.
HHAHAHHAHAHAHH... THANK YOU! Then I definitely saw shows like this when I was a kid. But super heroes that dressed as a cricket is an ultimate gem!
Though most international audience seems to enjoy the show, I've seen some complaints asking why Arthur left EN2 for this. With the low production value & less than stellar editing (though the plot and the dialogues are surprisingly pretty good), I think it's safe to assume that, well, perhaps he really had no other choice, no? I'm not trying to open up an old wound, but those questions are warranted .

Btw so viki subbing is also fast and aired the same as like iQiyi? Well then maybe i have to switch to Viki as well?? Ah i forgot why i watch in iQiyi, because LoA in Viki is not licensed in my region. LOL
Nope. At the moment Viki's still at ep 8, while iQiyi is at 16.

I love the ChuMin master!!!! She is such a badasss!! She was Jill Hsu a singer, i love one of her song "I Wanna Be With You" back then, ah such a nostalgia
I just checked because I was shocked -- but apparently it was Wang Jia Ning, not Jill Hsu (according to Douban and MDL).
2 hours ago, tothestars said:Wow what a review! Both of you should write those on LoA thread! Help me make some noises there LOL
Hahahhaa... perhaps not really a review, more like personal note on how I feel about the series. We'll see!

True that, Lu Ping's not arrogant, and more thoughtful to other people than Ning Que. He can get serious with Su Tang, because she's the only one who knows and understands him, and the most important person to him so far. Sigh, I really like their dynamics, and sorta hate that Qin Sang is being brought forth between them. Funny, I don't mind Su Tang - Mo Lin's relationship at all. Or maybe I just like Su Tang & Deng Enxi .

Ooohh which subs did you think were better, iqiyi or viki? I started watching on iqiyi but swapped to viki as they're available *so fast* (i actually wondered if they were taking the iqiyi ones (which is against their policy, but seriously, how are they subbing so fast?).
Hm, my take is Viki is better in using appropriate wordings or nuance in their translation, so viewers can understand the context. I reckon that iQiyi isn't bad at all, the sub doesn't feel like machine-translation, and characters' names are written. Now that you ask that, I'm thinking of comparing perhaps an episode or two to see where the difference lies. But you could be right, there is possibility that they're using iQiyi's subs too .
6 hours ago, Lbpg said:He does show improvement, I also hope he'd do better with the micro-expressions, but this was a year and a half ago.. i'd like to think he's improved since being directed by his dad on the 2 films he's done since.
Yeap. His progress is steady. His micro-expressions are already there in that 15-minute segment in "My People, My Country", though he was overshadowed by Liu Haoran. It worked though, since he was playing the younger brother who both worships and fears his older brother. I'm actually looking forward to Youth/Flowers Bloom in the Ashes.
6 hours ago, Lbpg said:On a side note... The effects on this drama are reminding me of Mexican shows from the 70s and 80s that had the cheesiest green screen effects and flimsiest props ever, and they were awesome to watch. Between those and background music on LoA, I'm having such a blast watching!
Ha, I don't think I've ever seen one like that, but I can imagine .
I want to post on LoA thread, perhaps about what I like about the show, including the hilarious things I found there. It really feels like old-school HK wuxia movie, complete with weird and eccentric characters. I mean -- who wouldn't love a drunkard FEMALE master? lololol.
Oh, another thing about Arthur's styling. Unsure whether you gals notice it too, but his slightly tanned complexion is nice to look at! I prefer this to the usual pale/cakey tone in many Cdrama, including Ning Que after he's admitted to the Academy!

LoA is so campy, I love it! Frankly, I went into it with no expectations, and as a result was not disappointed! It felt like he was typecast a little, but the outcome is so different. I'm looking forward to Immortality, based on the little visuals I've seen that have been leaked.
11 hours ago, mei2018 said:I was worried if LOA will be good or not because it will be compared to Ever night.
Well! It is not ever night but it is good in it own way.
I got a feel of a detective style story while ever night is more linear in story telling.
Lu Ping is also similar but different from Ning Que and I think that CFY has performed it well.
WORDS!!!
Naturally my initial reason to watch this is for Arthur, but I'm actually enjoying the show. Yes, it's campy, cheesy, the colors are so not my favorite. But the plot is intriguing (plotholes aside hahahah), and I genuinely care for the main characters, except Cheng Xiao's. I feel like Qin Sang is not well written, and unfortunately CX in my opinion doesn't have the skill yet to develop it, nor make the character likeable like Arthur does. On a side note, don't underestimate her fanbase. If you browse the Chinese sites (I particularly surf Douban and Zhihu), you will see her fans pouring in and showing support to her. I never doubt that her fans help elevating the show's viewing rank.
Back to the show, it is also reminding me to some old HK wuxia movies, like the cheap-looking set & clothing, some intentionally exaggerated acting, and the humor. You're all right, this is not Ever Night, and now I think that's what the production team aims from the get go. It is not pretentious, and it doesn't take itself seriously. @tothestars I finally succumbed & bought myself iQiyi VIP membership! But, I saw 10 episodes on iQiyi on a whim, and decided to rewatch it on Viki, and tbh it is more enjoyable as the subtitle is better, I think. I laugh and chuckle a lot at scenes and dialogues! There are a lot of self-mockery and sentences that only make sense in modern days. They're probably not as clever as in Joy of Life, or even in Go Princess Go, but they're still funny.
As for Arthur -- @angelangie I take back what I said about his hair styling. This one suits him very well! It really complements his face, he looks so handsome and manly. Acting wise, you see a lot of improvement from Ever Night. I think he still needs to learn to add small gestures to enrich the character, esp when the camera is not on him. But I trust our boy that his acting formal training will bring him further! He already got that natural charisma.

Omg!!! Thx a lot!!! I love this one too! Of course the bang is always good for him, like Ning Que right?? Oh man he is so handsome!!!!! I am happy he always get beautiful costume and hair style for costume drama.
Ah you're right... my faved NQ's ponytail includes some bangs too! He's not a typical pretty boy, his "crooked smile" is often mocked by some Chinese netizens. But he never looks bad! And that body proportion -- he can wear a sack and people will think it's from a luxurious brand.
12 hours ago, epinklyn said:Yeah HYX fandom is very scary, hopefully everybody will not expect too high for this adaptation, i am afraid for Arthur. This is a way too hype for him! But i believe on Arthur, he will dive into every character he get, and so far the result is always satisfying!
This extreme hype is uncalled for . I've started to miss those days when it was challenging for us to find any article or information about him, and weeks will be gone with minimum mentions of him on social media. I dislike how this new fandom brought up some of the looniest peeps. Oh well, that happens all the time, we just have to deal with it, ignore them and just be grateful that they also help finding Arthur gems.

Huang Bin supported the premiere of LoA in his weibo couple days ago, hopefully their relationship is still good. Networking is very crucial in business.
I'm pretty sure they still maintain good relationship. Huang Bin has extensive network, though it doesn't necessarily translate to getting great scripts for actors he signs. But IIRC his strength is endorsements of big label. I could be wrong, though.
BTW, here's another leaked photo of Arthur in HYX -- now, this one I approve! Boy is really gorgeous here. Never knew bangs can really compliment his face!
PS: though thanks to the HYX fandom we get new pictures of Arthur's, I'm on the fence about all these "leaked" pictures. Some of the fangirls are quite scary too, judging from their posts. . But oh well...

Arthur changed agent. It's said here his mom has a share in the new agent. I like some of the actors they sign, like Niu Junfeng & Wen Qi. Good for him! I said earlier here Huang Bin doesn't feel right based on what I've read about Zhao Liying's (and a few others) experience, so I'm glad he's switched.
Here's hoping for better projects and endorsements in the future!

Look at that expression! He has really improved and really dive into the character, he is Lu Ping! No more arrogance from Ning Que!
Yeap. I read from various sources about not only his expressions are improved, his lines too. I personally think the same (about acting, since I can't tell so much about line reading lol), but so glad that many share my thought.
He remains one of those actors who can look cool without seeming trying too much too.
Oh, btw, I LOVE him in the grey dress. I agree, he looks so mature and manly, and it's a leap from the striking red of his sect uniform.
8 hours ago, epinklyn said:Well i prefer he become evil with his acting and expression not because from the eyeshadow, but maybe it will elevate the performance yeah?
Same. But bold eye makeup (particularly liner) is often used to give a character an evilish feeling in Cdramas. Some can actually turn out hot, like Shawn Dou in Princess Agent. Or the eyeliners make the men seem exotic and rough, like Zhou Yiwei in Tribes and Empires. We will see how that works for Arthur next year, but frankly at the moment I'm not a fan of this look on him.

Viki also cannot show this in Thailand.I want to cry.
According to others, the English sub is available already, only late.
I'm watching it raw on a streaming site, and at the same time doing some chores LOL. So far Arthur is charming on screen! Will post later when I have time.

Yeah, he was only 17 when they filmed EN1 . He prolly will look a tad more mature in Awakening, with his baby cheek thinning out and his hair styling and side bangs covering half his face. I do think the styling makes him manly .

Not greedy! It's been a long time since we have anything from him (movie/drama/variety). Ever Night ended in late 2018/early 2019.. it's about time to have another of his drama!

14 hours ago, epinklyn said:Will he sing one of theme song from LoA??
Hmmm... I don't think so, but who knows? TBH, I don't think his voice suits the typical wuxia OST (personally I don't think Wang Sulong's voice suits either -- I prefer stronger voices, like Zhang Yunlong). However, a ballad for the ending song perhaps might work well.
Looking forward to LoA premiere tonight! (Hopefully)

Looks like Arthur celebrated his birthday with his family (including his grandparents!)
URL:https://www.sohu.com/a/386832200_253355
Chen Kaige hosted a feast for Chen Feiyu to celebrate his 20th birthday, and his mother Chen Hong was in tears
2020-04-10 10:59On April 9, Chen Feiyu ushered in his twentieth birthday. Father Chen Kaige and mother Chen Hong held a birthday party for their beloved son, and the family was happy. However, in the special period of the epidemic, the birthday party did not invite too many people to participate, only invited their own loved ones. After the party, the family also neatly put on masks, very low-key. That night, Chen Feiyu was wearing a black top and camouflage pants on the lower body, with a handsome and sunny look and youthful vitality!
In the photo, we can see that Director Chen Kaige is walking in the front, and his wife and son are also closely following, but each of the mother and son is carrying an old man. It is inferred that it should be Chen Feiyu's grandfather and grandmother. It can be seen that Chen Feiyu took Grandma's hand and Chen Hong took Feiyu's arm. This kind of tender moment happened to be captured and the picture was very warm.
After the party, the Chen Feiyu family first sent the friends away. During this period, Chen Feiyu and his mother had been holding the two old men.
After sending his friends away, the family is also going home. Chen Feiyu still holds Grandma ’s hand in one hand, and inserts the other hand into his pocket. The two characters are in the forefront, and some men's charm is indispensable.
Chen Feiyu is a caring and caring boy. After the car arrived, Chen Feiyu personally helped grandma to get in the car. This small move was reflected on the other hand. Chen Kaige and Chen Hong were very successful with Chen Feiyu ’s tutoring Chen Kaige and Chen Hong are very proud of the children who have value and education.
On the 20th birthday of his son, his mother Chen Hong also personally wrote that Chen Feiyu was a kind-hearted child since childhood and loved her parents' children. But she was a perfectionist and felt hard for her children. Chen Hong also remembered that when he was shooting martial arts, in the desert where the temperature was as high as 40 degrees, Chen Feiyu rolled down the sand dunes again and again, with sand in his mouth and nose, but he never complained to himself. As the son of big director Chen Kaige, Chen Feiyu has always been a serious and rigorous attitude towards the actor career, and will not pretend to be a big man because he is the "Star II", which distinguishes the small fresh meat that only says "123456" .
On the social networking site, Chen Feiyu also celebrated his happy birthday on time, with the text: two words take the lead, continue to work hard! Chen Feiyu really inherited the genes of his parents' hard work and hard work. After achieving such great achievements in his career, Chen Feiyu did not "float". With a humble heart, he continued to work hard for his acting career and for Feiyu. Call!
He Jiong also celebrated Chen Feiyu's happy birthday on the Internet. He was kindly called Feiyu's brother. Chen Feiyu responded politely: Thank you, Teacher He.

Is it just me or Arthur and Cheng Xiao lacked that chemistry? I can't root for their pairing, although it's obvious from the start that they are canon. Their lovey dovey scenes feel cringeworthy to me. Arthur's chemistry with Song Yiren & He Landou were off the chart that I could've easily shipped them off screen. Sadly, it's the opposite in LoA.
