Girl, he is from modern times and *somehow* is reborn in this parallel universe that has a China with a Tang dynasty. Don't ask too many questions, plot holes abound. At first I thought it was the author being cutesy when he mentioned Einstein, then The Little Prince came up, then Eiffel Tower, then Doraemon (????), then mobius strips, telescopes, and finally The Beatles. Everyone that hears him fall about these things just thinks he's crazy, and it doesn't faze him at all that he's in a parallel dimension or something. But then it's never explained, and it's not like it's a major plot driver (until it's clear that NQ can go against Haotian and succeed because he's not of that world, thus her rules don't apply to him - why I'd like to see how they explain all this in EN2 since the concept of him being from another world is not explored in the drama.)

So from that perspective, it's keeping on theme, but CPP is the first one that cooks pan pizza, so... Not really lol.

Gotta give it to CPP, our Master Inventor! :lol::lol: Aside from pizza, who will forget his juicer and instant noodle?

See, that's another resemblance to Joy of Life, all those references to modern life and icons. While Joy of Life does provide an explanation, I think it's the screenwriter's creativity, filling in the plothole of the original novel.

I'm okay with May/November romances, but we know the adaptation won't include any of that. They'll start filming before he turns 20, tho. Wonder what kind of stipulations he'll have in his contract to ensure the adaptation is extra-sanitary!

Ah yes, I forgot that they plan to start shooting in March. I'm all for the extra-sanitary version! LOL. Still can't get myself excited for a teacher-pupil (disguised) romantic relations. From what I gathered, even the characters have around 12 year age-gap and Arthur's character starts as an underage student of Leo's? Needless to say it bothers me :D. But there's also several lifetimes plot, I think, that might show that they're destined to be together. I'm not sure how those things work or in what context though.

At least they didn't go overboard with the PPL - Pizza Hut was already ridiculous enough!

It IS ridiculous, but at the same time it cracked me up. That modern time reference is actually not straying too far from the original source, no? In tone, I mean. Wasn't NQ written as someone coming from the future, or from an alternate universe? I didn't read the entire novel, but I remember glancing at a chapter in which NQ was brushing his teeth. I read that people of Tang Dynasty had done/were familiar with teeth brushing, but I don't think it was already a habit back then.

Ha, true. I'm surprised those novels have such a large audience outside of their native language, especially since 2/3 of it isn't even translated yet and you have to read the MTL version instead.

I'm not a fan of fujoshi, nor teacher-student romantic relationship. The age gap between Arthur & Leo is alarming to me as well, although they're professional actors, and Arthur will hit 20 this year. (I kicked myself for shipping Arthur & SYR due to their cute interactions on & off screen :( ). So on paper the drama comes all wrong to me. But I will see how it develops -- I can tolerate bromance!

I know there are a lot of people like me that can't be convinced there's a bright side to this season, but I suspect all those people have already expressed their views. What remains are those that either come into the franchise straight into 2 because of the magic of Netflix and meteor garden (I'll raise my hand, I'm in that group, but I went into 1 as it was over a year ago that the magic worked on me lol), or those that don't care as deeply about the story, quality, etc., and the whole thing is fine for them, the score will go up. I think I read EN1 started out below 5? It may have been a Google translate thing, tho, that seemed really low, especially considering the beginning of EN1 is better than the middle part.

I agree with you, the score will eventually go up. How high it will go, that's another question. I started paying attention to Douban only 2 or 3 years ago, so in that short period of time I only know a couple of rare cases in which Douban rating goes significantly higher from the starting score, namely the Rise of Phoenixes and the Untamed.

IIRC, EN1 started out 6 something (6.5?), then climbed its way up, especially after ep 6, thanks to the Spring Breeze pavilion's battle! I believe at one point it even reached 8.0, before it gradually went down again, and settled at 7.4. Many viewers complained about the pacing, I think? Also some of the changes from the novel angered book fans (like the whole MSS segment and NQ's trying to spank SS at her parents' house).

For Sword Dynasty, I wonder how much is Li Xian and his looks? Is the drama no good? I've not heard much besides his hair style in it lol

Wuxia is my preferred genre. I actually liked Sword Dynasty in the beginning, with all its low production value. The fighting scenes, at least up until 16 episodes I've watched, IMO could make EN1 run for the money. The fighting choreography AND its badass female characters are SD's strongest points, because everything else is quite disappointing. I love all its female characters, but Li Xian's character is insufferable. In addition they gave him horrible hair and voice dubbing.

    12 hours ago, Lbpg said:

I also read a discussion post on Douban when I saw the rating about how EN1 $ losses forced budget cuts on 2, as well as a cut on episodes, etc etc something about an inside source. Anyway, it's plausible that they just didn't have the money to pay for all those actors and they waited for them to move on. Besides the other speculations. I'm sure there's a grain of truth somewhere

I think I read a comment on Douban about it as well -- something about they had to cut the budget for EN2, resulting in cutting episodes from 60 to 43? Such mass editing never ends up well, and I still suspect they had to do it in a rush. I'm guessing the losses is due to PD Yang's perfectionism and insistence in shooting on location. In both EN1 and EN2, I heard stories of them shooting a scene for a week or so. That's a lot of money!

By the way, I know it's not a popular opinion, but I looked up some more info about this new drama and I'm kind of excited about it. If nothing else because the character growth seems extraordinary, and you know it'll be extra sanitized. I also started looking into the novel and my goodness it is, ummm, out there. Yeah.. Loving that I'm seeing people on other social media sites getting into Arthur, and he's getting more exposure and appreciation. I'm all for that.

LOL, it's not popular here, but outside there you can see the book fans rejoice. And, as you have observed, people are getting into Arthur. :)

    Yikes... 5.3

Thank you for sharing. Just went there after your post and it's already increased to 5.4 LOL. I was actually expecting it to be around 6-ish. I mean, Sword Dynasty got freaking 6.5 -- with less than stellar production value. Regardless of my personal issue with the crew, I feel like PD Yang deserves more.

    5 hours ago, Lbpg said:

LOL! That's pretty ballsy, and accurate. I have a hard time believing she is happy with the end product, though. They spent 2 years on the script for EN1.. unsure if that included the EN2 adaptation since it's the same writer. It makes me think she spend the last few months on it. If they started shooting in 2017, they started the adaptation in 2015, so a good three years before EN2 started filming. They had plenty of time on the production side.

Now that I look back at it, it could be (over) confidence, or her way to assure outsiders that the EN franchise will remain fine after Arthur's departure. If you remember, back then there was a lot of concern about the veterans staying put. Most of the veterans are staying, but it turned out that the change of the younger cast did affect viewers' sentiment. I also notice a lot of those who criticized Arthur in EN1 are now missing him LOL.

I suspect they indeed didn't have much time to prepare for EN2 -- or, like I said before, there was an unprecedented change of airing schedule, so post production had to be rushed.

Someone on Viki was bragging about "just wait till douban releases the rating". I think they're dreaming. What's the EN1 score on Zhihu? Seems you need to log in to check it out :s

    EN1 score on Zhihu is 79 (vis a vis Douban's 7.4).

@caranita If it is a remake (as The Best summer was a remake from a series), it is already difficult for an actor to get accepted. However, if it is a remake, an actor has a freedom to reinterpret the character and make it his own, as Arthur did for Yu Huai.

Still, he also got many dislike as the fans prefer LHR version.

The situation is different for Ever night, though. It is not a remake. DL comes come in the middle of the story. He cannot reinterpret NQ, he MUST play Arthur’s NQ for the theme and emotions to smoothly continue while being himself too.

Even for a veteran actor, this will be very difficult to do. This is DL only 2nd drama, how could the team expect him to deal, with this difficult job. So it is very normal, that he will not be that well accepted especially when compared with Arthur.

    Precisely.

The producer is Gordon Chan, yes the one who directed The Four the movie. Well it is better to not put a high expectation, so wont dissapointed at the end.

Ah, thank you for the correction (not Jordan but Gordon). Agree with you, should manage our expectation. (BL isn't really my fave genre, either).

I have my doubts that Arthur would've done a great job (as a lover), but at least we would've been getting what we already expected in NQ.

I wasn't sure either, but then I remember Arthur's gaze to He Landou in My Best Summer ;-).

This said, writing Ning Que as a lover must be tricky to any scriptwriter. He's not sugary sweet, but viewers must be able to see and feel his love to Sang Sang. BTW, I read somewhere that EN2 writer isn't the same with EN1 -- is it true?

I'm still not convinced that DW is good. He barely acted on MG, I believe he's stated himself how close DMS is to his own personality. So having to play freaking NQ as his first true acting gig is unfair to him. Add to that the fact he wasn't familiar with the source material and he (probably) didn't have the months in advance to get to know his leading lady, and the handicap gets even larger. I'm glad the fangirls noticed :)

You know, a lot of his fans back then thought the role should've been easy for him since "Ning Que is basically another version of Dao Mingsi". I remember vividly one said he could've played NQ in his sleep. I guess Dylan -- or his handler -- shared the same view?

I also remember PD Yang stated that since she had been able to create a NQ, she could make another one. Sigh, I'd say they didn't have much time to prepare the new cast?

EN2: 8.2 (it was 8.9 the day it started airing)

    Today:

EN1: 8.7 (ha! it went up)

    EN2: 8.0

On Viki, EN2 went from 8.8 to 8.6 today, but you get way more people rating things as "10" on Viki than you do on MDL. EN1 on Viki is at 9.4.

And its Douban score is still blank! But perhaps for comparison, Zhihu gives EN2 66%. Can't access QQ so I can't tell the ratings there.

Umm.. May be . Most Ever night1 fans in Thailand miss him and the 1st season casts.

They are still watching season2 but most agreed that the production and the script are not as good as season1. Now that the pillow book is aired, a lot of attention has shift to pillow book too.

The story is good, and most people are still invested in it. I think Dylan's international fans are contributing to the viewing numbers too, though I notice they didn't really discuss it (only a few). And of course some Dylan fans who have watched EN1 actually thought Arthur is better (or better fitting) as NQ, and his chemistry with SYR outdoes the EN2 OTP.

Case in point (just read the thread):

hmmm LOA director is Jordan Chan? the director of 'The Four' Movies staring DengChao and Liu YiFei?

If I remember correctly, Jordan Chan is the producer. (Can't remember who the director is). I want to be optimistic, but I remember Sword of Dynasty was produced by Feng Shaogang, and the drama is a mess. SoD has arguably a very strong wuxia vibe (which I LOVE), and the action choreography is excellent. But the writing and editing suck, and production value is low -- I can hardly believe it was from Feng Shaogang! :bawling:. I still want to finish it someday because I miss old-style wuxia very much and this one atm is the closest to those I watched growing up. But I gotta admit it's such a struggle. I hope Jordan did a way better job.

well remember the moment when MaoNi praised Arthur on them casting him as NQ?

I was talking about it earlier! I personally see a lot of similarities between Ning Que and Fan Xian characters. And interestingly the way Arthur & Zhang Ruoyun portray their respective character are quite similar too, although EN & JoL have different directors & scriptwriters. ZRY is a more experienced actor, hence his acting is more nuanced, but his mannerism reminds me to Arthur's when playing NQ. As I see it, Mao Ni praised Arthur for interpreting NQ the way he was written. (For the record, credit should also be given to PD Yang who's very meticulous and specific.)

I've heard other people say that about LoA, that it was to make up for not having him in EN2. Is there truth to that? I would've imagined they would've given him something with more visibility, if that's the case. LoA seems to be not very buzzy (but this one sure is)

I have heard of the same thing about LoA, though we'll probably never find out the truth. What I meant by "compensation" is there's also Tencent's efforts to keep good relations with the Chens. Don't get me wrong. I believe even without the Chen family background, Arthur might score the coveted role based on his own works, and post-EN1 popularity. Also, most book fans seem to love his visual (at least those I read on twitter, hahahahh... I can't be sure of the Chinese readers). But with CKG on board, even when not directly involved, there will be doors to better production crew (cinematographer, musicians, costume designer, etc.). Tencent certainly can afford the best crew, but at this point we don't even know how big Tencent's share in this production yet.

I would also like to know about Legend of Awakening.

It looks like the number of traffics AND/OR deliberate decision by the production company.

Quite a departure from the source? Do you think they will finish the novel in this season?

I just checked EN2 Douban, and found that it's not rated yet! I guess the production company is aware of the issues and criticism, that they've been withholding the rating until Godknowswhen? EN1 got really good words-of-mouth and its earlier high Douban score was a promotional material as well.

Btw @epinklyn the director helmed the Legend of Dugu and And the Winner is Love. Haven't seen both, not even clips, but I've read some  applause of Ady An's acting. So I assume there's nothing to write home about the direction. I can only hope now they'll get a decent script -- if they can nab the Joy of Life scriptwriter, that will be fantastic!!! I agree! Somehow the hair color doesn't really seem out of place for him. But Arthur has always been more daring on fashion events. Outside the limelight, he's back to his normal, conservative style. (And his love for long sleeves ).

As much as I hate to admit it, here he does look a lot like Kris Wu. Grrrhhh.. can't wait until his hair grows out again. I want to see his EN1 hair and body shape, please! With the playful eyebrows as a bonus ;-)

Speaking of which, here's an interesting article about the brothers (again, Google is your friend!)

    https://www.twoeggz.com/info/144625.html

    Highlights/interesting tidbits:

    - They have very different personalities. Alex is confident, tends to be bossy, isn't afraid to speak his thoughts, and at times rebellious. His dorm room was messy because that's how his friends' dorms were. Arthur is a good and obedient kid, careful not to hurt other people's feelings, and a perfectionist (well, we knew about it all along right? LOL).

    - Regardless, they're super close. Arthur looks up to Alex, asks for his advice, and looks for Alex when he's in trouble.

    - They once used their collected hongbao to fund a project filming a child with an illness and could barely walk, whose father was in prison and lived with their grandma. Touched by this documentary, their parents paid for the child's surgery.

I think you just sold me on giving Joy of Life another try. I watched the first episode, it wasn't what I expected (in my mind, Mao Ni = Ever Night-like plot and tone for everything no matter what lol) When I saw it was like a comedy it was weird to me.

    11 hours ago, epinklyn said:

Hahahaha yeah, the story was begin in comedy, many people find it strange too, different with the novel. But more and more eps you will find it getting darker, a lot of cuel politic and conspiracy. But still the drama version will be lighter than the novel.

Note: The adaptation is not faithfully like EN.

But hopefully you will like it like we do (me and @caranita). The plot is faster than EN, i never skip watching all the supporting cast in Joy of Life, they are all very good. In EN i always skip most on Long Qing, Imperial story, and Xi Ling.

YEA!!! @Lbpg Joy of Life is highly recommended! You might have been taken aback by the comedy on episode 1, but trust me the comedy is there not for the sake of comedy. It's not slapstick a la Lingjian Mountain, but clever humor injection to an otherwise pretty dark story and serious plot. Most viewers enjoy the witty banters between characters, all characters are multidimensional, all the way to the side characters. Like @epinklyn said, this is not a faithful adaptation, but the brilliant screenwriter got the essence of it and retold the story in an intelligent and entertaining way. While it doesn't have EN's gorgeous cinematography and soundtrack and editing could've been a bit better, there's no dull moment, and the acting is top notch. Along the way you may  also notice its resemblance to EN (not just Ning Que and Fan Xian's characterization).

Speaking of... over on the EN2 thread i had to drop these because NQ wearing the secret bodyguard robes so randomly bothered me (unless he did it as a subversive act, but so far he's not behaved like he would do that...) so, ladies, enjoy a nice flashback :)

Ahhh... thank you! Agree with you, Arthur's well proportioned body makes clothes hang nicely on him. And that lovely ponytail!!! :wub:

BTW, the net is getting ruckus about that BL novel drama adaptation rumored to cast Arthur. I don't know what to think about it. I don't mean to make it sound like Arthur is above this genre, but I don't really see the benefit for him. The way I see it, this project is more idol like. (I could be wrong though). He's still far from being an established actor, he's not even a traffic actor (yet). But at least Ever Night and My Best Summer made him more known to the general public, and frankly he has enough resources to participate in interesting projects.
