  1. @kansas424Ah! Good find about that young noble disguised as a Japanese soldier. EC did keep saying to AS that he was training her future comrades. So far, I have been pretty lukewarm to the introduction of the young nobles but now I am really curious to see how they factor into the story - could this be a mission on behalf of RA/King or part of some personal mission of Eugene/Ae shin?

Lord Go going on a public protest

    Japanese soldiers invade her home

    American soldiers came to intervene

Stop it. I go by myself. Do not touch.

What's going through Lady Ae Shin's mind at this point? Apprehensive, angry, confused .. relief?

All of those emotions probably. Apprehensive at first because of the elders gathered, initial confusion once the Japanese entered, giving way to her regal anger at their audacity and ending with inner relief to see Eugene saunter in on his horse. And I do think that as soon as Eugene spoke about the American legation needing to talk to her, she must have realized that he was doing this for her protection. Notice her face after she tells Ms. Haman to fetch her sedan chair, she looks up at Takashi with a mixture of mocking and smugness.

I know that logically speaking and based on character traits, it should only be Eugene that Grandpa G o is talking to about protecting Ae Shin but if you watch the good quality promo on youtube (https://youtu.be/kDPRg2zuUVk)  and pause between  the 9 sec and 10 sec mark when Dong Mae is shown on the screen, you will notice that behind Dong Mae's left shoulder, there is  a blurred image of a white vase/bowl placed on a shelf/cupboard. If you go back and watch previous Grandpa Go's scenes in his room/study, you will definitely see that white bowl in the same place.

    @rubie

The actor playing Takashi is so awesome. I didn't know his name so thank you for the information. I also reiterate again, his character should have been brought back much sooner.

Seems like Dong Mae is in a different room - his dojo where he flips over Takashi.  BUT, the promo is cleverly cut - using a yellow flame on the right of the screen in each scene showing Grandpa Go, Eugene and DM to make it seem like they're in the same room. It could end up being the same room where Grandpa Go talks to them or it could very well be not.

Grandpa Go: (to Eugene and? DM?) Please protect Aeshin.

Grandopa GO; A man who will provide protection by any means necessary.

Grandpa Go: And a man who will not allow any mistakes along the way.

I am intrigued by Grandpa Go's words - whom are they directed at? Only Eugene? Or Eugene and Dong Mae? The point where he says a man who protects in any way and a man who doesn't allow mistakes - the use of the 'and' seems like he is talking about two different men, right? Or maybe he is not actually talking to them but musing out loud about them - although I don't see any scenario where Grandpa Go can even be charitable to DM after what he did to AE shin at the end of E18.

    @charray

As there are only 6 episodes left, I am beginning to think the drama would be more about how various people come to join the RA but we probably would not see any battles being fought due to the timeline being from 1900 to 1905.

I say this very politely but I don't get the insistence of some of the fans for more RA and RA related activities to take center stage. The root of this story is a romance between a lowborn foreigner and an aristocrat lady. The RA, Japan's slow annexation of Joseon etc are just providing the backdrop/setting for this romance. In other words, the RA and its activities etc are secondary to the plot.

like to see him resolve the duality of straddling 2 countries and determine where his home and country should lie whether in America or Joseon and firmly stand on the side of his choice

In Eugene's own words from E18, the best thing for him is to be a loyal American soldier, through and through. Given the volatile times that Joseon is headed towards, there is no benefit to Eugene in committing himself to being a Joseon man now - it only places him at a disadvantage. The Americans may never fully accept him but Eugene can use his identity as an American citizen both to his benefit and the benefit of Ae Shin, should, nay, when the need arises. He is far better better placed to affect outcomes as an American than as a Joseonite.

The only acceptable reason that I can think of is if Ae Shin’s Grandfather asked him to do it (to cut off her ties to the family).

Why would Grandpa Go willingly deprive Ae Shin of the protection/safety/security that comes from being a member of a noble family. But I do admit that It is a possibility.

Or if it is part of a plot with RA to spy for RA by working for Colonel Mori or with Lee Wan Ik. In the latter case of spying for the RA, Ae Shin would understand as it is for a bigger cause and she is even prepared to give up her life for the bigger cause.

Too convoluted. Why would the RA suddenly start trusting Dong Mae and use him to spy on Mori or WI? From what we have been shown, the  Potter is a very very careful and shrewd guy - he has cultivated the RA members over years and years. No way would he risk that by working with someone new like Dong Mae.

Dong Mae end his obsession with Ae Shin and be free to move on to do something for himself and his life

I had been hoping to see this happen gradually but now I feel that this is never going to happen. Him changing now would give me whiplash. My understanding is that the man is beyond repair when it comes to his obsession. It will be the end of him - which if you think about it is downright pathetic.

A man’s life cannot be all about just protecting a woman or obsessing over her and the drama cannot be just about 3 men protecting a woman.

True words spoken. But unfortunately, it seems like the writer doesn't see it this way.

Questions:   Ae Shin was on her way to the pharmacy.  DM asked where she was going with no reply back from AS.

Where does DM think she is going?  And does the reason/destination make any real difference to him?

    Thoughts guys? :D

It would have made no difference and I was glad she didn't answer - she is under no compulsion to tell him where she comes and goes. I do wonder though if he tells her about Wan Ik's inquiry about her parents. Seems like too heavy and important a detail to keep to himself.

  6. The matryoshka doll makes its appearance.   Symbolic for the different stages of womanhood, this one perhaps signifies Ae Shin's maturing to be a strong woman of her own.  I was really touched at Ae Shin's expressing thankfulness to those who have helped her.  Foreshadowing the passing of Lord Go and Ae Shin stepping up, making her own choices to control her own future.

He's the closest to a father figure to Ae Shin.  Even though they are years apart, I feel is Seung-Goo a kindred spirit to Eugene.  They truly see Ae Shin, her potential, to trust that she will learn and prevail on her own strength.

Go and be whatever you want to be Ae Shin.

    @bedifferent Beautifully put. Thanks.

  7. @mellinadearI am sorry but this is laughable. So, all that the prominent RA members have to do to dispel any and all suspicion is to get their hair cut (willingly or otherwise)?  And the villains who are looking into them will be satisfied on seeing them renouncing their Joseon spirit so openly? Wow!! If Wan Ik and Takashi end up believing this, then I will seriously lose a lot of respect for the writer for making them so dumb.

Thanks for enlightening me with the explanations.  Much appreciated!

@mistymorning what do you think?  Is DM all about reality, survival and not tradition? His mannerism and way of life are subconsciously a rejection and detestation of the Joseon he dislikes.  Like Eugene, I think he treats people and make friends based on the person's character, not out of obligation, nationality or society standard driven by class/tradition.  That's something to be considered against the man who lives by the code of violence and power because he needs to survive.  I think this is why he is different from Eugene who tries to control the worse of human emotions.  Eugene said something to Hee-Sung about the choices we have to make and how he chose to not feel hate.   DM must learn that part of him exists and that there is another way to resolve confrontations.  I am not sure if KES will ever give him a sympathetic coat of armor  given who he represents.  He's tragic, sad and controversial in so many ways.

Ae Shin is not his property, she is not beholden to him in any way nor is she under any obligation to him. Whatever code he lives by, he has no right to impose it forcefully on others.

That's something to be considered against the man who lives by the code of violence and power because he needs to survive.

It is so easy to hand wave away his shitty and cruel actions as some mode of survival. From the second he has returned to Joseon, he has had power in his hands. He was no poor survivor just doing whatever it took to live but he was making decisions and terrorizing people using the power he had acquired in Japan. He stopped being a survivor, a long time ago. Now, he can be called as an oppressor.

@blademan  @mistergenie I think he did that to protect her in his own way. And his way for sure is not everybody's taste.

But i am pretty sure he did that for her sake.

Guys i don't think of dong mae as villain and i am sure he will join the righteous army to protect joseon at the end too.

But i am pretty sure he did that for her sake.

DM can't keep justifying (even internally), anything and everything he does by using that excuse. So, Ae Shin has no say in this? He takes away her agency - she was powerless in that moment to stop him - and it is not a good feeling at all.

What does that ending mean?!!! I know it’s pretty significant to cut your hair especially in those times and ESPECIALLY a noblewoman and to top that off!! He did it publicly!!

Dont't know exact cultural context but maybe humiliating her/shaming her/actually making her a flawed woman (by the definition of those times) so that she doesn't step outside the house/ hides away somewhere/ goes away someplace else? If I am being way too lenient with DM's motives - cutting off her hair to indirectly help her disguise herself better?

BUT, the way in which  DM takes away her agency in this, is infuriating. Nothing can justify this sh*tty behavior.

P.S: Is there some confusion about the episode count? dramamilk were saying so in the beginning of their live recap So, 22 episodes or 24? What is the correct number?

  11. @rubie I usually hate PPLs, specially any Subway ones, but the Matryoshka doll one is super cute and is kind of woven into Ae Shin's fascination with foreign stuff. Me likey.

@charray Speechless and in shock? My anxiety levels just touched the roof. Speechless shock due to good stuff happening or foreboding, dangerous stuff? Edit: nvm. just read the recap of the final minutes on dramamilk. Ooh boy!! I will have plenty of thoughts about this, none of which will be pretty.

True, I think AS is perfectly capable of assessing and handling these multiple circumstances in her life (her fight for Joseon independence, her involvement in the English school, her grandfather's protest/arrest, her relationship with EC, that ominous encounter with Wan Ik, etc.) all at once.

With so many plot movements happening now, I was thinking that it would have been great if we had 30 episodes. Honestly, I am always apprehensive when the final few episodes of any kdrama start their run towards the finish line. Why you ask? Well, it is because it has been my past and regular experience with many a kdrama where they tried to  fit too much into the final few episodes which inevitably lead to rushed conclusions and nonsensical, twisty (just for the sake of being twisty) endings that poured water over all the previous development of the earlier episodes.

Hi @mistergenie.  The DM fandom may be swooning over the "coin/debt exchange" (which, btw, still gives neither AS or DM any substantial understanding of the other), the candy/shootout scene, and the preview (with DM walking in slow-motion with his sword toward AS while narrating about being someone for her despite turning against the world), but AS has more pressing matters at hand that she, at the moment, can't be bothered with having to knock some sense into DM.

AS' grandfather, along with his fellow nobles, is imploring in front of the palace over King/Emperor Gojong's (or is it Sunjong now? I'm losing track of any time changes in the drama) capitulation to the Japanese at the expense of the Joseon citizens, and, judging by the Ep 18 preview, is under arrest by the police (Japanese or Korean? I can't tell).  Meanwhile, the Japanese police discovered AS' attendance at an English school (where they arrested the English teacher there as a spy) and is ransacking her home.  Not to mention Wan Ik's foreboding gaze at AS' direction in the next episode preview.  At this point, AS' own life, safety, and future (and that of her grandfather, EC, and her loved ones) are at stake now.  She has no time to ponder DM's questionable actions/mission; heck, she may not even have time now to continue getting involved in the RA movement or pursuing her relationship/future/happiness with EC when she's facing unsettling turmoil in her own home.

Since I watched the unsubbed Ep 17 and do not really understand Korean, please let me know if I missed any other key plot points or characterizations.:)

I am not unduly worried about AE Shin's involvement in the heady matters you have described in your post. Willingly or not, she will end up being caught up in major events, and it will be quite interesting to see what steps she takes to resolve certain sticky situations (namely her grandfather's arrest and Wan Ik). Whatever the case, her character is not static nor stuck in some weird one sided obsessive loop where her life revolves around one person only (same cannot be said about a pathetic DM) - she is dealing with multiple things and those things don't have to be exclusionary - like, she has to let go of one thing to tend to another - life doesn't work that way - when everything important to you is on the line, you fight for everything - you don't drop something nor push something to the back burner.

Speculation Time: Could that Dong Mae and Ae Shin scene in E18 preview be a hallucination/past memory while Dong Mae is being operated on to remove the bullets?  Possible, no? Because in that scene in the preview - 1) there is no indication that he was recently shot and is recovering from two bullet injuries. 2) they were on civil terms in E17, so seeing Dong Mae invading Ae Shin's personal space like that and looking angry seems a bit out of place.  OR some time has passed, he is fully recovered and he is after the RA guy who shot him, hence the anger.

Sorry for quoting my own comment but I was reading dramamilk's translation of the preview and some other thoughts came to mind:

From dramamilk's translation of the preview: Dong Mae: – I will be someone for you from now on. Because now I don’t care if I make the entire world my enemy. -

hmm, maybe he wants to join the RA and be her comrade/shield yada yada? Too late dude, she already has EC for all that.

    OR

maybe he takes it upon himself to punish/beat/kill people who are spreading rumors about Ae Shin's broken engagement - if so,  I fully expect parts of the fandom (high on entitlement) to expect, nay demand that Ae Shin recognize DM's actions and reciprocate in some way or another. As for me, I hope she firmly knocks some sense into him - she doesn't need someone being a white knight on her behalf, specially someone for whom she has no reciprocal feelings of love at all.

This time AeShin gave the coin to Dong Mae politely and also thanked him.  Just saying... character  evolution...

Even though she is under no obligation to give him this ransom/extortion money in a civil way, she has already been giving him the coin politely - it was shown in a very brief scene in last week's episode. This time, she thanked him for his help in bringing that undelivered letter to her grandfather.

Character evolution? Politely disagree. More like basic common decency from Ae Shin despite the circumstances.

  17. @charray  RE: Eugene tied up - Ooh! This is intriguing. Is that Lee Jeong Mun's side profile (in blue dress) in one of the pics? Did he order the arrest? The soldiers around Eugene - they're Joseon ones, right? The Japanese have a blue tinged uniform. But the red bands on their sleeves and caps are throwing me off and  making me think that they're Japanese soldiers.

Aigoo.... please give me a break ! If you look at the picture of the boat ride , AS certainly looked unfriendly to me and 'hostile' was the first word that came to mind, and I would have corrected the corresponding pic to 'romantic' instead of 'friendly'.

My English is not good as many here and I tried to create strips that are funny, light hearted and easy to understand, if you look properly , there were many spelling and grammatical mistakes as well. And there are times when I might have picked the wrong adjective as well.

I tend to get too emotionally invested. I apologize if my thoughts came across as a bit 'hostile'. :tounge_wink:

Please, no need to explain. We are truly grateful for your efforts. Spelling mistake or not, 100% exact interpretation or not, wrong adjective or not, your strips are amazing, they make me laugh and feel warmth. What more can I ask?

  19. @Ahpheng Regarding your latest C-Strip - Oh Come on! That boat ride was anything but hostile. If there was any hostility, Ae Shin wouldn't even have asked EC to be her wherry man in the first place. She was curious about him, like he was about her - hence all the questioning back and forth in the boat - but none of it was hostile. In fact, although unacknowledged, the boat ride was the beginning of their romance. Remember ending of E7: AS: This love is quite hard. EC: I should never have taken that boat ride.

  20. @AhphengOh! How much I loved that line from Eugene about wanting to see the blooming plum flowers all year around!! Your C-strip made me go and see that scene again. I also watched that scene in Episode 3 where they meet at the tailor's shop - even though  Ae shin was in her all encompassing hanbok, I did wonder why, when Eugene entered the room, she tried to cover her feet - going through the comments on your Instagram post I came to know about the significance of a man seeing/touching a woman's feet in that time period. Now ,after seeing Eugene touch her foot so reverently in E16,  it feels like such a natural progression to their relationship.
