myhaneul
So Ji-sub, "I was up for it even before I saw the script" Source | 2017/08/08 | 63 views | Permalink | "The Battleship Island" recorded 6,077,100 by the 6th of August. The drama features a bandmaster named Lee Kang-ok (Hwang Jeong-min), his only daughter Lee So-hee (Kim Su-an), Choi Chil-seong (So Ji-sub), a gang leader and Oh Mal-nyeon (Lee Jung-hyun) who has been through all kinds of struggles under Japanese Imperialism in 1945. So Ji-sub claims he decided he was going to be in the movie without even looking at the scenario. "I decided to do it even before director Ryoo Seung-wan showed me the scenario. I had a chance to work with him a couple times before but I thought if I turned him down this time, I wouldn't get another chance (laughs). I didn't understand why movie makers offered me roles. I really thought this would be my last chance and it was the first time I decided to go ahead with it without seeing anything. It was also a subject I wanted to try. I am grateful to the director. I trusted him". The following are his questions and answers. -That was some heavy action. The director compared a tiger and said he wanted me to be someone who moved instinctively like an animal. It was awkward at first. The actor across from me must've had a hard time. Difficult parts were played by stand-ins and they did a good job. I felt comfortable working that way. -The first scene with Lee Jung-hyun was impressive. You had your private parts held in her hands. I just stood still. She did everything. She worried about the scene before the cameras started rolling, but as soon as she played the part, she got the 'OK' sign. It was a scene which showed who Mal-nyeon was. -Choi Chil-seong is very manly. How do you compare yourself to him? Chil-seong doesn't think much. He acts first. I do not like making excuses and hurting others. If I don't think I can do much about something, I don't explain. I try not to be a part of something I didn't do. -We heard you didn't even look at the scenario. Did you worry after seeing it? I did. I wondered if I could be Chil-seong, but I also worried that it was a movie with a historical background. I think the same can be said for everyone in the movie. Pressure comes from true stories. Not a lot of people knew about "Battleship Island" when we were making the movie. I was glad many people would soon learn, but the pressure grew with it. We couldn't distort a historical event or give up the fact that it was a commercial movie. I think that put the director in a difficult spot. -How do you feel about the multi-casting? I had good thoughts about it and thought I could be a dependable person for others. In the end, it was all the same. The good thing about it was that we could all brainstorm together with the director. It was a load off his worries. I don't think badly about multi-casting though. -How was working with Hwang Jeong-min? It was awesome. I understood why people like him. I felt him myself. He practiced a lot on the set. He would be practicing his instrument or his lines at one point and at another, he would be helping the staff with their work. He's been working with the director for a long time so he was also like a leader. He took care of the cast, the staff, and crew. Everyone looked up to him and it was a good thing. He didn't advise us on anything, he just created the right environment. -Other than acting, you import foreign movies. You are also in the music business and much more. I invest in foreign movies or go to the market to buy them. I just have my finger on it. If I am greedy, I just hope the import movies don't fail. I really hope my album doesn't fail though (laughs). "Café Society" looks good so far. -Who would you say is the next So Ji-sub? No one like me I hope (laughs). I hope Yoo Seung-ho doesn't go Hip Hop. I wish everyone becomes an actor with his own color and I wish there was someone who had a different perspective of things. I remember during one of the “BI” promotions some weeks back the journalist teases So Ji Sub and asks whether he envies Song Joong Ki who will be marrying soon. He answered that he has been asked that question several times & said that he has no confidence on marriage yet, although he’s on the age to get married already but he’s not ready yet. But, if he gets married, he hopes to have a daughter for his first child. _________________________________________________ So Ji Sub. myhaneul
The popularity of the movie, Battleship Island, was infectious and carried its way to the US. The theater was packed as I watched with my fellow Korean/American community. Such a heart wrenching and meaningful movie. I was brought to tears in several scenes. Many in the audience were of the age they can remember living through the hardships of the war. The performances by all the actors were outstanding. Our So JiSub was especially awesome. His portrayal of Choi Chil-Sung was stellar. The theater was silent at the end when the credits rolled and little Kim SuAh sang Song of Hope (희망가). Everyone remained in their seats. Tears couldn't help but to swell in our eyes. A movie that should be watched by all. A time in our history that should always be remembered and not ever forgotten.

myhaneul
Yah! 'The Battleship Island' sails smoothly in U.S. box office 2017/08/09 16:27 LOS ANGELES, Aug. 8 (Yonhap) -- "The Battleship Island," a Korean film about the dark history of Japan's Hashima Island off the coast of Nagasaki during World War II, has been showing promising box office results in the U.S., its distributor said Tuesday. According to the distributor CJ E&M, the film by director Ryoo Seung-wan earned US$400,000 the first weekend since it was released on Aug. 3 in the U.S. The revenue ranked fifth in terms of per-screen average, surpassing "Dunkirk" and "The Dark Tower." Portland-based Rentrack, which tracks box office figures, said the first weekend ticket sales for "The Battleship Island" outperformed "other Korean movies that were shown in the U.S. such as 'Ode to My Father' with US$320,000, 'Assassination' with US$280,000 and 'Train to Busan' with US$270,000." "Mr. Ryoo adroitly moves his camera through vast, crowded settings, and the climax sweeps you up in its ineluctable intensity. Its aftermath vividly conveys the pain of a national wartime trauma whose scars clearly have not healed," wrote the New York Times in a review. The movie is playing at 42 places on the North American continent, including New York, Washington, Toronto and Vancouver. myhaneul
Hwang Jung Min, So Ji Sub, Song Joong Ki Talk “The Battleship Island” With Fans And Press At Singapore Stop Rebby August 9, 2017 The team behind the latest blockbuster movie from South Korea, “The Battleship Island,” including director Ryoo Seung Wan and cast members Hwang Jung Min, So Ji Sub, and Song Joong Ki, were in Singapore on August 8 as the first stop of their promotional tour. Besides meeting members of the press, the four gentlemen also held a Meet and Greet session with fans and attended the Gala Premiere during their whirlwind trip. At the press conference, when asked who would have the best survival skills in times of war, the two senior actors Hwang Jung Min and So Ji Sub were unanimous in their answers, agreeing that Song Joong Ki will survive easily. “I think everyone here except Joong Ki will experience pain if we have to perform aggressive movements,” Hwang Jung Min said, causing his co-stars to burst into laughter. So Ji Sub added, “He also got out of the army not too long ago so it has to be Joong Ki.” To this, Song Joong Ki replied “I’m the youngest so I also think it will be me.” In the first action scene of the movie at a public bath, So Ji Sub, who plays a former gangster from Seoul, appeared almost fully bare. The actor admitted it took him a long time to train and prepare himself for that scene. Song Joong Ki, who plays a special agent in the movie, joked, “I feel like I have lived five years as a soldier if you count the the number of years I’d served as a soldier in Korea and the roles I had played in ‘Descendants of the Sun‘ and this movie.” Despite being the youngest male actor among the leads, Song Joong Ki said he didn’t feel any pressure and was very comfortable on the set, with his seniors taking care of him very well. The chemistry between them was great, and they gave him a lot of advice. When asked if there’s any possibility for him to work with his fiancé – Song Hye Kyo – again, Song-Song couple fans may be disappointed to hear that an onscreen reunion is unlikely. “Working with her in the same production is something I would have to give a little more thought to. It will be challenging because work is work after all,” Song Joong Ki explained. Describing the talent of his co-stars, Hwang Jung Min said, “So Ji Sub’s acting is very solid and gentle; he reminds me of someone who is very responsible and reliable. Whereas for Song Joong Ki, he’s very considerate, and working besides him, I felt that his parents had raised him really well.” About 5,000 fans turned up to meet the actors at the Meet and Greet event at Suntec City later that day. Later, “The Battleship Island” cast ended their Singapore tour with a Gala Premiere held at the MasterCard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands. The movie opens in Singapore on August 17. Special thanks to Golden Village Pictures for inviting Soompi to the press conference.
