Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (September 14, 2024)

by DB Staff

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

mistyisles

Love Next Door: I’m done with both exes, but yay for Seung-hyo finally being honest about his feelings! I’m even less excited about the random health scare (though, with a paramedic in the cast, I figured there’d be a few medical emergencies along the way), but here’s hoping it at least leads to even more honesty all around. Much as I’m still very much rooting for these two, however, I’m finding myself much more invested in the side relationships — especially Seung-hyo’s parents and Mo-eum/Dan-ho (plus his daughter, of course!).

Unit

Love Next Door: This drama is what happens when you have all the right ingredients and a trusty old recipe, but something goes wrong during the cooking process and you end up with a dish that looks good, smells good, but tastes bland. But it would appear that I’m hungry seeing how I still press “play” every week.

Love Next Door: Episodes 9-10

by missvictrix

Where oh where did our little rom-com go? We lost it somewhere in between intense familial relationships and health crises, and we are in full blown melodrama now. I decided to retitle our show to Angst Next Door. If only they told us this was what we were going to get, I would have come prepared.

EPISODES 9-10

LND0910_2.jpg

While Seok-ryu gets checked out at the hospital, we get a series of flashbacks showing her life with Hyun-joon back in the States. Their cute engagement, the scary moments of her diagnosis, her treatment, and how much they stuck together. As far as I’m concerned this entire plot line needs to die, but just taking it on the merit of what we’re shown, their relationship seems solid and I guess I’m glad she had Hyun-joon since she… didn’t talk to her own family while she was going through all this? Huh?

The drama plays it fast and loose this week, showing us flashbacks, cutting off scenes, and enjoying agonizing us with the question of whether Seok-ryu is sick again or not. One interesting takeaway from the flashbacks is that Hyun-joon didn’t cheat on Seok-ryu after all. Pool Party Girl was merely taking out his contact lens (ROFL) and it just looked like they were making out. Okay. The real thing that broke their relationship was that Seok-ryu went through an (understandably) deep depression after her treatment, and in a way, it was the straw that broke the camel’s back. This is painfully realistic, and it has absolutely no business poking its head into my rom-com where two cute neighbors were supposed to be peeking out their bedroom windows and falling in love, exclusively.

Back in the present, it’s clear that Hyun-joon is here to stay. He re-proposes, and the drama (and Seok-ryu) make us think that she accepts. On the heels of this possible reengagement, Seok-ryu and Seung-hyo are on their jungle gym when Seok-ryu tells him about the proposal. Poor boy asks if she was considering it, and when she affirms, he asks, “Even though I confessed?” *Ouch* Seok-ryu tells him he’s just a little boy to her, and this little interlude goes about as well as you think. Seung-hyo is super hurt by her cruel words, and the drama teases us with the gentle knock of someone at the door… wait is that you, Noble Idiocy? Even the hint that Seok-ryu is backing off because she is a) sick again or b) afraid of being sick again is just too much for me.

But it’s not too much for Seok-ryu. The next day, she turns Seung-hyo down again, telling him point blank to throw out the milk container he’s been protecting with his very life blood. He doesn’t even need to wait till it expires — the answer is no. This is just painful, and it throws Seung-hyo into a fever that’s said to be seasonal but we all know it’s the Fever of Heartbreak. Despite her harsh words, Seok-ryu turns up to nurse him, and it’s here that Seung-hyo oh-so-conveniently sees the medical paperwork that is sticking out of her purse just asking to be noticed.

Despite the deus ex machina here, the elongated reveal scene that this kicks off is a truly emotional and painful one. It both closes out Episode 9 and opens Episode 10. Basically, Seung-hyo sees that Seok-ryu was sick and confronts her immediately. He’s so distraught and hurt that he’s crying while they’re arguing… and who walks in but both their moms.

This then extends this already-painful scene into something even more so, when Seok-ryu’s mom hears the news and grabs her daughter and they both weep. But wait, there’s more! When Mom learns that this all happened three years ago and that Seok-ryu is healthy now, she about loses it.

The scene then feeds off this to add on yet another layer, which is Mom dragging Seok-ryu home, and telling Dad and Dong-jin who are sitting on the couch. Now, despite hating this plot line, this whole sequence was packed. Park Ji-young was particularly amazing here, saying more through her lack of words than with all the shouting and smacking that her character has been doing until this point. The same goes for all the actors, really. Well-done. But that doesn’t really make me feel any better about it. If I wanted a cathartic melodrama watch, I would have picked one up. I came here to watch two friends catch feelings for each other, not to have my heart ripped out by grieving parents, grieving friends, grieving soulmates, and grieving protagonists. This is simply too much grief for a rom-com, guys.

We spend all of Episode 10 with our characters reacting to Seok-ryu’s health situation, and I’m torn. I do love that the drama took the time to show everyone’s disparate reactions (parents, Dong-jin, Mo-eum, the ahjummas, and of course, Seung-hyo) and how full of pathos it all was, but I’m not the kind of viewer who likes to have my emotions played on this hard. I know that’s hard to believe coming from a veteran K-drama watcher, but this drama just lays it on a bit too thick.

One thing I really liked, though, was when Seung-hyo confronted Seok-ryu on suffering alone and not telling her family or him — he dismissed all her excuses and said she was just bitter. That struck a nerve. Hmm, maybe that’s what this entire drama is actually about, or should be about. What if it’s not about falling in love with the perfect boy next door, but about how bitterness in your heart will run you aground if left unchecked — because it’s a theme that’s running through Seok-ryu’s entire family. But, what it seems the drama really is trying to say with this plot arc is that you need your loved ones always — but especially when you’re going through hell. This is true. This is a worthy message. But their are better ways to tell it.

What the heck was that ending for episode 8.

I guess it was to upset everybody for a couple of episodes!  Seems to have been all taken care of and put behind by the end of the 10th episode.  But maybe it put it into perspective what exactly happened to the FL, gave a clear picture of how serious her relationship with her fiance was and explained how they broke up.  We can somewhat understand why she and her fiance just would not tell anybody what happened but had not given up on each other either.  Things do fit in somewhat, but it was all a big drag.  Unpleasant story line...

Hey, this was supposed to be a romantic comedy.  Let us get back to some of that please!

Jung Hae In And Jung So Min Find His Mother's Suitcase At The Police Station In "Love Next Door"

Sep 20, 2024
by E Cha

tvN’s “Love Next Door” has unveiled a sneak peek of its upcoming episode!

“Love Next Door” is a romantic comedy by the director and writer of the hit drama “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha.” Jung So Min stars as Bae Seok Ryu, a woman who tries to reboot her troubled life after it goes awry. Jung Hae In plays her mom’s friend’s son Choi Seung Hyo, whom she considers a dark and embarrassing chapter in her life.

Spoilers

On the previous episode of “Love Next Door,” Choi Seung Hyo finally got Bae Seok Ryu to let out the feelings she had been bottling up after secretly undergoing treatment for cancer and struggling with depression. Seok Ryu blamed him for ghosting her while she was alone in the United States, and Seung Hyo belatedly apologized after regretting his actions.

In newly released stills from the drama’s next episode, Seung Hyo and Seok Ryu wind up at the police station with his dad Choi Kyung Jong (Lee Seung Joon), who is visibly distraught with fear and worry. Notably, Seung Hyo’s mom Seo Hye Sook (Jang Young Nam) is nowhere to be seen, with only her suitcase left behind for the trio to examine.

Although the nervous Choi Kyung Jong—who previously asked Seo Hye Sook for a divorce—remains calm while opening the lock on his wife’s suitcase, the tension is palpable as Seung Hyo and Seok Ryu worriedly look on from the sidelines. It remains to be seen why Seo Hye Sook suddenly disappeared—and what will happen to her troubled marriage with Choi Kyung Jong.

5 K-Dramas To Watch If You Love The Childhood Connection To Lovers Trope

Sep 21, 2024

The childhood connection is a favorite K-drama trope which has undergone its own evolution over time. They have either been bosom buddies as kids, who naturally transitioned to being lovers, and there are also those who were sworn rivals in the classroom, going their separate ways, hoping to never cross paths again. As adulthood throws its own curve balls, dodging and navigating the arduous world of grown-ups, they realize they are better together.

The recent crop of K-dramas have brought out stories of self-introspection and healing, as fate makes them find their way back to each other and for some brings alive long-forgotten connections. Here are five such K-dramas which bring life lessons along with a touch of romance.

“Love Next Door”

love-next-door.jpeg

Bae Seok Ryu (Jung So Min) and Choi Seung Hyo (Jung Hae In) have been joined at the hip since they were tiny tots. However, Seok Ryu later left for the States to study and work. She has not been home in a while and is all set to be married. Seung Hyo is an award-winning architect, who has now established his own firm. He has had feelings for Seok Ryu for as long as he can remember, but never mustered the courage to confess. When Seok Ryu is back, bag and baggage, not only has she quit her job, but she has even cancelled her wedding. Her return does not go down too well with her mother, who feels she is going through a rebellious phase in her thirties. Seung Hyo sees that there is indeed more to her return than she lets on. Seok Ryu wants to start afresh and do what brings her happiness, but is also guarding a secret that she has kept away from her family and Seung Hyo. As these two friends traverse the complicated situations of their adult life, it opens up a sea of unfamiliar emotions. What remains constant is the unbreakable bond they share with each other.

“Love Next Door” goes beyond the story of friendship and first love, as it highlights how one’s childhood shapes the way we grow up to be as adults. Seok Ryu, who has a strong streak of independence, is an achiever but wants her mother to cut her some slack and not impose her own failed dreams onto her. On the other hand, Seung Hyo, having grown up a single child of two busy parents, has always been embraced by Seok Ryu and her family. His feelings for Seok Ryu are strong and he dotes on her, but can she regard him as anything more than her best friend for life? As one awaits where “Love Next Door” takes us next, there is no denying that Jung So Min and Jung Hae In are remarkable actors with an arresting chemistry.

Love Next Door: WOW that was a lot of crying, and most of it more exhausting than cathartic. Funny how the emotions were a big part of what roped me in initially, but now I feel like I’m just trudging through them and hoping they’ll let up soon. There’s just a lot of shouting and blaming and speaking for each other, and not nearly enough listening to try and understand how each other feels. And then when we finally get a few moments of levity, it feels jarring and out of place (except the spoons on the eyes thing — for whatever reason, that actually had me cackling). The most egregious example being one of my favorite emotional moments of the week — Dan-ho and Mo-eum’s heart-to-heart leading up to the kiss — that was then totally undercut by her smacking him in the face for no reason. Head-butting aside, though, Mo-eum is my favorite character, and my other favorite moment this week was her hugging Seok-ryu instead of yelling at her like everyone else did. I understand the point the show was making, but I think it could have made that point in a much better way.

Jung So Min Gets Shy On Her First Date With Jung Hae In On "Love Next Door"

tvN’s “Love Next Door” has shared a sneak peek of its upcoming episode!

Spoilers

On the previous episode of “Love Next Door,” it was only after the “expiration date” of Choi Seung Hyo’s confession had passed that Bae Seok Ryu finally realized the full extent of her feelings for him. When she rushed to tell him how she felt, he responded by kissing her.

In newly released stills from the drama’s next episode, Bae Seok Ryu can’t help getting shy around Choi Seung Hyo after their first kiss. As the two of them sit side by side drinking banana milk together, Bae Seok Ryu is adorably unable to meet his gaze. Choi Seung Hyo, on the other hand, can’t seem to take his eyes off Bae Seok Ryu as he smiles in contentment.

Meanwhile, Jung Mo Eum (Kim Ji Eun) goes camping with Kang Dan Ho (Yun Ji On) and his daughter. Any lingering awkwardness from their unexpected kiss is long gone, and the two appear completely relaxed around each other as they enjoy their trip together.

However, during a conversation at sunset, Kang Dan Ho looks surprised by something Jung Mo Eum says, piquing curiosity as to what they could be talking about.

The “Love Next Door” production team commented, “Finally, Choi Seung Hyo and Bae Seok Ryu will become lovers and begin Day 1 of their relationship. Their romance will be awkward and youthful—and that will make viewers’ hearts flutter even more.”

They went on to tease, “Please also keep an eye on the special relationship between Jung Mo Eum and Kang Dan Ho—and whether Jung Mo Eum has fully given up on her feelings for him.”

The next episode of “Love Next Door” will air on September 22 at 9:20 p.m. KST.
