tvN has released Extraordinary You star Kim Hye Yoon’s new stills from the upcoming drama Lovely Runner. Adapted from a popular web novel and written by True Beauty author Lee Si Eun, Lovely Runner is a fresh time-travel romance series posing the question: 'What would you do to save your ultimate bias?' Kim Hye Yoon takes on the role of Im Sol, a devoted fan shattered by the loss of her beloved star Ryu Sun Jae played by Byun Woo Seok, who travels back in time to rescue him.

The new stills provide a peek into Im Sol's life – in one frame, we see the 34-year-old Im Sol, who maintains her smile while enthusiastically fangirling from a wheelchair. At the same time, another image portrays a dramatically contrasting scene where Im Sol appears visibly frightened, her usual vibrant demeanor overshadowed by a palpable sense of imminent danger.

Conversely, the images depicting Im Sol in 2008 exude a youthful allure, as her look in school uniform suggests innocence, while her earnest expression hints at a maturity surpassing her age, mirroring her inner perspective as a 34-year-old.
In Lovely Runner, Kim Hye Yoon adeptly embodies the complexity of her character Im Sol, effortlessly transitioning from a devoted 34-year-old fan in 2023 to a determined 19-year-old student aiming to change her idol's unfortunate fate in 2008. This drama marks Kim Hye Yoon's much-awaited comeback to television after an absence of around three years, and viewers anticipate being enthralled by her exceptional acting prowess as she portrays both a mature job seeker and a high school student.

4 Reasons To Anticipate The Premiere Of "Lovely Runner"

Apr 07, 2024
by S Nam

Get ready for the highly-anticipated premiere of “Lovely Runner”!

Based on a popular web novel and penned by “True Beauty” writer Lee Si Eun, “Lovely Runner” is a new time-slip romance drama that asks the question: “What would you do if you had the opportunity to save your ultimate bias?” Kim Hye Yoon stars as Im Sol, a passionate fan devastated by the death of her favorite star Ryu Sun Jae (Byun Woo Seok), who goes back in time to save him.

Ahead of the premiere, tvN’s “Lovely Runner” unveiled four reasons to anticipate the upcoming romance drama!

Time-slip romance

kim-hye-yoon-byun-woo-seok-.jpeg

“Lovely Runner” follows the story of passionate fan Im Sol who goes back in time to the year 2008 in order to save her bias Ryu Sun Jae, who helped her survive a difficult period of her life. The drama will be helmed by director Yoon Jong Ho of “Times” and “Flower of Evil” and penned by scriptwriter Lee Si Eun of “True Beauty,” raising even more anticipation for the drama.

Director Yoon Jong Ho shared, “When I first came across the script, I became sucked in [to the story] and enjoyed reading it. With scriptwriter Lee Si Eun’s trademark comedy and romance as well as a tight storyline, this is a project that any director who enjoys rom-com would want.”

Byun Woo Seok and Kim Hye Yoon’s chemistry

byun-woo-seok-1-.jpeg

After Im Sol goes back in time, she will struggle to change Ryu Sun Jae’s fate, raising viewers’ anticipation for the romance that develops in the process. Already, Byun Woo Seok and Kim Hye Yoon have garnered viewers’ attention for their chemistry as well as their height difference.

Regarding casting for the role of Ryu Sun Jae, director Yoon Jong Ho explained, “As the one in charge of the drama’s visuals, Byun Woo Seok had to have the physique of a swimmer as well as the aura of a top star and be an actor who could portray [a character] in their teens as well as in their 30s.” On Kim Hye Yoon, director Yoon Jong Ho added, “For the character Im Sol, scriptwriter Lee Si Eun chose Kim Hye Yoon and wrote [the script]. If Kim Hye Yoon rejected the offer, I don’t think this drama could have happened.”

Premiere Watch: Lovely Runner

by missvictrix

2D7RQ3C7MJ_1.jpg

Time slot: Monday-Tuesday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Rom-com, fantasy, time-slip
Episode count: 16
Global streamer: Viki

Reasons to watch: With a promo game that’s been 10/10, one can only expect the very best from Lovely Runner. With Kim Hye-yoon back on our screens in a role that seems made for her (i.e., adorable, desperate, devoted fangirl), what more can you ask for than a time-slip rom-com where said fangirl goes back to her high school days and gets a chance to save her beloved. That beloved is none other than the idol played by Byun Woo-seok, and really, this is everything I need to know to get me to watch. But to top it off, the writer from True Beauty is responsible for our script, so I am pretty confident the drama will be self-aware enough to be a blast — rather than a self-serious slog. (Bonus reason to watch: the epic height difference.)

TL;DR: Kim Hye-yoon is in her fangirl era and has to save my her idol Byun Woo-seok

Watch: Byeon Woo Seok Is Confused By Kim Hye Yoon's Strange Actions In "Lovely Runner" Preview

Apr 08, 2024
by S Nam

Get ready for the premiere of “Lovely Runner”!

Based on a popular web novel and penned by “True Beauty” writer Lee Si Eun, “Lovely Runner” is a new time-slip romance drama that asks the question: “What would you do if you had the opportunity to save your ultimate bias?” Kim Hye Yoon stars as Im Sol, a passionate fan devastated by the death of her favorite star Ryu Sun Jae (Byeon Woo Seok), who goes back in time to save him.

In the newly released preview for episode 1, Ryu Sun Jae approaches Im Sol, who appears to be crying while crouched over in front of a bridge. Ryu Sun Jae pokes her and asks, “What are you doing?” only to cause Im Sol to tip over completely. She feebly asks, “I’m dead, right?”

When Im Sol sees Ryu Sun Jae, she mutters, “A ghost?” However, quickly realizing Sun Jae is in front of her, Im Sol begins to sob and say, “It’s true, it’s true. I can see Sun Jae. That means I died.” Believing the bridge to be the road connecting them to the afterlife, Im Sol continues, “Actually, it’s for the best. I’ll go with you so that you’re not lonely on your way. But what do I do about my poor mom? Mom… Grandma… No, we haven’t crossed this bridge yet, so there should be a way. Let’s go back together. Don’t ever cross this bridge.”

Confused, Sun Jae explains that he has to “cross over” to get home. Im Sol hugs him from behind to stop him from crossing the bridge, and Sun Jae bolts away from her and grabs a taxi instead. Im Sol finally wonders, “A taxi? In the afterlife?”

“Lovely Runner” will premiere on August 8 at 8:50 p.m. KST and be available on Viki!

Lovely Runner: Episodes 1-2

by Dramaddictally

Squeeing straight out the gate, Lovely Runner is off to a cute, funny, fresh start that I can only say good things about. Our resident fangirl and her idol crush turn out to be more than meets the eye in this time-slip drama, which has perfect casting, solid storytelling, and enough pretty to sustain us on dopamine hits alone for the next eight weeks. If you’re not already watching, run to it!

EPISODES 1-2

With one of our leads a manic mess and the other a flustered flirt, this show is pulling up my happiness capacity to new levels. Kim Hye-yoon and Byun Woo-seok play off each other in the most hilarious and heartbreaking ways that I really can’t imagine anyone else in these roles. (And with Byun Woo-seok on my screen, why would I want to?)

The drama starts on the serious side, with one character coming to terms with the loss of her ability to walk and the other settled on suicide, but the honey-sweet storytelling is already cradling us toward a happier ending. With the amount of heart clutching happening on my side, I have no idea how I’ll make it until next Monday.

Lovely Runner: Episodes 1-2

We start in July 2009 in the depths of despair with IM SOL (Kim Hye-yoon) in the hospital following an accident that will confine her to a wheelchair for the rest of her life. On the radio, a new idol group called Eclipse is being interviewed, and they’re calling one lucky fan who will get to speak to the members.

RYU SUN-JAE (Byun Woo-seok) is the lead vocalist (and visual, omo) of Eclipse and he’s calling Sol’s phone from the radio show. She picks up, but she’s never heard of the group and is irate that such happy people exist in the world when there are people like her who are suffering so much.

However, it’s pretty obvious that Sun-jae already knows her somehow. “Thank you for being alive,” he says. “Stay alive. Because it’s so nice outside.” To which Sol responds by sobbing her little heart out.

We then skip to New Year’s Eve 2022, where Sol has adjusted to her new life on wheels and become an ardent Eclipse fan with an expensive Sun-jae bias. Her whole room is decked out in merch — including a life-size Sun-jae cutout, which she sends kisses to on her way out the door to see him in person at her first-ever Eclipse concert.

En route to the show, we get a little exposition about the past. Before she was an Eclipse fangirl, Sol had a crush on some other boy back in high school — and didn’t even realize that Sun-jae freakin’ lived across the street! WHAT?! But now she’s trying to make up for lost time by looking at Sun-jae’s high school yearbook pictures (to which she has the appropriate response: “Eeeeee! Omo, omo, omo, omo.” Yes, girl. Yes.)

But all this happiness and optimism is about to come skittering down when a string of rough events befall our heroine right in a row. First, she gets called for an internship interview that she’s been waiting for — and even leaves the pre-concert events to attend — only to be told that the facilities aren’t wheelchair accessible and so they won’t hire her.

Still, our live-wire leading lady doesn’t let it get her down. She returns to the concert, ready to perk up her spirits, but realizes she’s lost her ticket and can’t get inside the venue. And yet, this girl still puts on her Sun-jae headband and parties outside by herself while the music plays inside.

And inside, Sun-jae and the boys put on a show that contains so many outfit changes and sweat-dampened dimples I’m about to drop dead. If this drama aims to speak straight to the fangirl heart, it sure knows what it’s doing.

After the show, the bad luck continues. Sol’s phone drops on the ground and cracks and then her wheelchair runs out of battery while she’s trying to cross a crazy-long bridge — alone, in the freezing-cold snow. I mean, this day could not get any worse. And so, she cries.

But just then, Sun-jae is driving by and sees her. He gets out of his van in the most idol-y way possible, with an umbrella that he holds over her head against the elements. She looks up in disbelief and he coolly asks what she’s doing. “Is your wheelchair broken?” (How he’s able to make even a line like that sound flirtatious is beyond me, but he pulls it off.)

Sol is still crying but this time it’s happy tears. She’s smiling and stuttering out that she’s a fan, and she wants to say how grateful she is for what he said to her all those years ago on the radio — he made her want to live again. But she doesn’t say it (and he doesn’t know the impression he made on her life).

He offers her a ride just as her friend rolls up to offer her a ride too (ugh, timing), and so she goes with her friend (in the world’s most questionable decision ever) — but gives Sun-jae a small jar of something that she knows he likes. In the moment, it’s not clear exactly what she gave him, but it’s a clue that we need to hold onto for later.

We then move on to darker terrain. We learned before the concert that Sun-jae wants to retire as an idol but everyone around him is angry for it and trying to stop him. When we see him after he parts with Sol, there are bottles of pills scattered around his hotel room and he’s standing on the balcony looking ready to jump. There’s a splash in the hotel pool, and the next thing we know uri Sun-jae is being pronounced dead on January 1, 2023.

Sol is one of the first to receive the news and she goes out to try to find him at the hospital. On her way, she drops the watch she’s been wearing — which once belonged to Sun-jae (and she paid heaping money for). To retrieve it from the water where it fell, she throws herself out of her wheelchair and pulls her body along to get to it. There on the wet ground, sobbing and screaming to Sun-jae at his time of death, the watch goes haywire and Sol suddenly wakes up in 2008, in her high school classroom.

Lovely Runner: Episodes 1-2

Everything is just as it was back then. Her legs work. She’s in uniform at an all girl’s school. And Sun-jae is alive and well — and on the swim team at the boy’s school just across the way. (Oh I love this.) At first, Sol thinks she’s dreaming — so, why stay in class! She runs over to find Sun-jae at his swim meet and cries happy tears when she sees him, “Sun-jae-ah!” Sprinting, she grabs his wet, half-naked body in a hug and can’t be pushed away even when he tries. “It must have been so hard for you. I didn’t know how much pain you were in.” Then she looks at his face and tells him she loves him.

And well, that gets her dragged out by security.

The thing is, she can’t figure out why she’s not waking up. Maybe she’s actually dead? She settles on that idea and when she sees Sun-jae again later in the street, she thinks he’s a ghost too. “Let’s live together!” she yells, meaning “let’s stay alive together,” but he thinks she means “let’s move in together” and calls for a taxi to high-tail it out of there.

And here we have our push-pull setup that just keeps getting funnier. Each time Sol tries to get close to Sun-jae, she does something to repel him (and there’s a hilarious graphic on the screen to show how far away he’s getting from her every time she messes up). But Sol can’t be deterred because she’s decided to stick by Sun-jae’s side and stop him from thinking bad thoughts in order to prevent his death.

After we see them stealing glances at each other in a rainy doorway (squee-level feels!) and squabbling back and forth about one thing after another, we learn one rule of this time-skip world: there’s no talking about the future. Each time Sol tries to tell Sun-jae about what will happen to him, the whole world stops around her and no one hears what she says. She’ll have to develop other means.

4 Things We Loved & 2 Things We Hated About The Premiere Episodes Of "Lovely Runner"

Apr 13, 2024
by andyzar

It’s finally here! For those who have been eagerly waiting for the romantic comedy “Lovely Runner,” the wait is over at last! Ever since the announcement of this new show, the anticipation for it has been on the rise, and it didn’t disappoint. There are definitely many things to love from this K-drama, from the fantastically casted actors, to the solid plot from the beginning. Here are a few things that we loved the most and some things we didn’t especially like from the first two episodes.

Warning: spoilers for episodes 1-2 below!

LOVED: The endearing and emotionally realistic plot

The story follows the female lead Im Sol (Kim Hye Yoon), who gets bedridden and loses all hope in life after an accident, that is, until she meets by chance the lead singer from the new boy group “Eclipse,” Ryu Sun Jae (Byun Woo Seok). He gives her the exact words of encouragement which help her to overcome her struggles. Fast-forward to several years later, we see a much recovered Im Sol, who turns into a positive and thriving woman, always eager to support her ultimate bias, Ryu Sun Jae.

Kim-Hye-Yoon-03-1.jpg\

byeon-woo-seok-kim-hye-yoon-2.jpeg

Right from the start, “Lovely Runner” shows a very emotional setting, since we see two polar opposites in the main couple: Im Sol, who seems to be at her worst moment in life, and Ryu Sun Jae, who is at the start of a promising career, despite both being the same age. Later on, we will find out that their lives are more intertwined than it is initially shown. Furthermore, the show depicts how important the right support is when you need it the most, which is exactly what Im Sol will try to do for Sun Jae in order to prevent his tragic death when she finds herself back in 2008.

Lovely-runner1.png

LOVED: Kim Hye Yoon and Byeon Woo Seok’s wide acting range

One thing you can count on when it comes to Kim Hye Yoon is that you can be laughing out loud with her hilarious scenes in one moment, just to be bawling your eyes out the next with her heart-wrenching moments. Her ability to portray deep emotional scenes without missing the chance to make you laugh is exactly what a character like Im Sol needs to be. This is especially true since she suddenly finds herself in the past, right before her accident (which left her impaired) and with the chance to save the life of her beloved Ryu Sun Jae.

Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (April 13, 2024)

by DB Staff

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

Lovely Runner: Aw, this is a delightful surprise. I’m a little mad at myself for starting it right away because I’d have preferred to marathon this in a single weekend and I don’t look forward to the next seven weeks of waiting for my next dose of sunshine. This setup (of traveling back in one’s lifetime and attempting to fix something that went awry while delivering a hit of nostalgia and romance) has been a bit of a trend in recent years, but it’s all about the execution — I’m reminded of how I stuck with the lackluster A Time Called You more for what I wished it could be rather than what it was. I have more hope for Lovely Runner, which is bright and sweet and well-acted — they hit that balance of youthful awkwardness and melancholy in just the right way. I appreciate the building up of the background story (in the future timeline) that gives Sol’s antics an edge of desperation that keeps the comedy from veering over-the-top, and I’m rooting hard for Sun-jae to find his way to the light. We all deserve a Sol in our lives doing her damnedest to make us feel our lives are worth living.

Lovely Runner: Two episodes and this drama has captured my heart! I went in with fingers crossed, hoping to love it, and it only took the first few minutes for that to happen. The story, the leads, the heart of the thing! I love when a drama has a firm grasp of what it’s doing, and knows how to make all the right feelings happen, seamlessly switching between making me giggle, squee, and then clutch my heart in those heavier moments (seeing her youthful mom, hugging her grandma, the tear that dropped on her foot). This drama also has the best art direction vibe around it — this was something I adored about True Beauty and I’m so happy to see here too. There’s something about the color palette, the retro vibe, and the lived-in detail of each set that builds this maximalist, hyper-curated, and delightful world of the story that just makes it so easy to inhabit. This is hands-down one of my favorite things K-dramas do, and a drama like this always renews my fervor and appreciation for it.

Lovely Runner: Let’s be real, you had me at “time-slip idol drama.” But even aside from that, this show is an absolute delight, and I’m loving every second of it! Something about it feels very “classic K-Drama” to me in all the best ways, but there’s a freshness to it as well. The way she literally isn’t allowed to tell the future is a neat twist to the time travel rules, and now I’m curious what *other* rules might pop up as we go along. As for the big twist in Episode 2 — if I weren’t already sold on this pairing, I sure am now! Also, I’m going to need the entire OST immediately.

I liked the second episode better.

I just now realized the FL's friend is the actress from Alchemy of Souls...

the car scene was so hilarious...they were so loud...(ep 1)  :D

The ML's POV at the end of the ep 2 was an unexpected twist but it made the drama more interesting.

I also like the SL..he is not annoying...:D
