“Miraculous Brothers” Unveils Intriguing Character Posters Of Jung Woo, Bae Hyun Sung, Oh Man Seok, And More

Jun 29, 2023
by E. Ezeji

“Miraculous Brothers” has released character posters for Jung Woo, Bae Hyun Sung, Park Yoo Rim, Oh Man Seok, and Lee Ki Woo!

JTBC’s “Miraculous Brothers” is a mystery drama about Yook Dong Joo, an aspiring writer with tons of debt who is searching for the truth, and a mysterious boy named Kang San, who has unique powers. The drama is the 11th collaboration in 24 years between director Park Chan Hong and writer Kim Ji Woo.

Jung Woo stars as Yook Dong Joo, an aspiring writer still struggling to find success seven years after graduating college with a degree in Korean literature. Despite being saddled with debt and a troublemaker mother, he still dreams of one day becoming a best-selling author, so he writes novels on the side while surviving day to day by working part-time jobs.

One day, he stumbles upon a manuscript of the novel “God Is Dead,” which he haphazardly transforms into his own work and publishes, garnering critical acclaim and becoming an instant best-selling author. But when a murder in the novel occurs in real life, Dong Joo becomes the prime suspect.

Explaining the message behind the miracle that occurs in the drama, actor Jung Woo revealed that while filming the drama, he became grateful for certain things in his daily life. He shared, “I felt once again how grateful I am to be able to see, feel, and laugh with my loved ones.”

“Our everyday life that we take for granted is itself a miracle,” continued Jung Woo. “The drama shows that the ordinary daily life we enjoy may be a really desperate dream for someone else.” It remains to be seen if Dong Joo, who becomes embroiled in a huge vortex of events due to a single novel, will be able to create a miracle by regaining his ordinary daily life again.

Bae Hyun Sung stars as Kang San, a mysterious boy who appears in front of Dong Joo out of nowhere. Having lost his memory after a car accident in which he forgot even his name and age, Kang San discovers that he has developed the mysterious ability to personally feel others’ pain and despair, as well as see their memories and emotions.

Describing Kang San’s ability as a miracle, Bae Hyun Sung shared, “We all have difficult emotions like pain, sadness, and anger. In the drama, Kang San heals those feelings, and Dong Joo joins him in that journey, making them ‘miraculous brothers.'”

Bae Hyun Sung added, “My maternal grandparents are both ill. I wish a miracle would occur to make all the diseases in the world disappear, so that people could live more happily and without worries.”

Premiere Watch: Miraculous Brothers

by missvictrix

Time slot: Wednesday-Thursday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Mystery, fantasy
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: This fly-under-the-radar JTBC drama stars the ever-loveable Jung Woo and newbie on the block Bae Hyun-sung in what might be the perfect bromance dynamic.* Jung Woo’s character is a struggling novelist, and Bae Hyun-sung is the young man who he finds himself aligned with. But even more than just a regular ol’ abandoned puppy, the boy has amnesia… and an empathetic superpower. Cue: Hyung and dongsaeng joining forces to help the people in pain and despair around them, and solve a couple of mysteries while they’re at it. The drama promises to be heartwarming and moving, and from the writer of Beautiful World and Memory — I believe them.

Miraculous Brothers: Episodes 1-2 (First Impressions)

by Unit

Like a gripping manuscript in the hands of a publisher, Miraculous Brothers wastes no time in dropping us right in the middle of a miraculous and thrilling ride with twists at every turn. A theft, a murder mystery, and an amnesic guy with superpowers? Okay, Show, you have my attention.

Editor’s note: Weekly drama coverage will continue.

EPISODES 1-2

Our drama opens with a foot-chase in the middle of an alley on a rainy night. Two men in black are in pursuit of a young man (Bae Hyun-sung), and we notice a strange blue glow emanating from his backpack. He falls after colliding with a passerby, and the fall considerably slows him down. Just as he’s about to burst out onto the road, one of the men reaches out to grab him. But at that moment, lightning strikes, and Mystery Boy (which we’ll call him till his name is revealed) is propelled forward with some superhuman force out of reach. Safe? Not quite. Why? There was an oncoming car, and Mystery Boy gets knocked down by the driver! Talk about an anticlimactic twist.

The driver, YOOK DONG-JOO (Jung Woo), rushes Mystery Boy to the hospital. And while the doctors try to revive him, Dong-joo hears a faint “hyung,” which draws him to Mystery Boy’s bedside. But he can’t tell if the sound is all in his head or if it came from the unconscious kid. Mystery Boy flatlines and is pronounced dead, but Dong-joo hears the “hyung” again, and as he goes up to inspect the body, Mystery Boy’s eyes fly open! *Jaw slackens*

With a shady chase, a questionable backpack, superhuman powers, a Truck Car of Doom, and a “resurrection” all within the first ten minutes of the show, color me intrigued! The opener sets the pace of the show as a mystery drama with fantasy elements, and tells us what to expect — without fully telling us what to expect, because there’s a whole lot we don’t know about these characters and their background stories.

What we do know is that Dong-joo is an aspiring novelist who works part-time jobs to get by, and he’s burdened by his mom who’s always getting into trouble. Mystery Boy on the other hand is the real question mark here, and the contents of his backpack don’t do anything to demystify him or reveal his identity.

In the backpack, Dong-joo finds odds and ends like an old cassette player (okay?), a curious-looking rock (hmmm), and a manuscript titled The Almighty is Dead with a picture tucked inside the pages (okay, definitely suspicious)! The novelist in Dong-joo is intrigued and as he settles to read the manuscript, we get cutaway scenes of a man (with cigarette butt-like burns on his hands) drowning another man in a car. *Gulps water*

Miraculous Brothers takes fast-paced to a whole new level and before we can say “Jack,” Dong-joo passes off the manuscript as his own to publisher frenemy, LEE MYUNG-SEOK (Lee Ki-woo). The story sucks Myung-seok in, and it’s straight to publication and the bestsellers list! Admittedly, Dong-joo didn’t set out to steal the novel because all he needed was to borrow money from Myung-seok to bail out his mom. But to prove Myung-seok wrong when the haughty publisher taunted him over his nonexistent career as a novelist, a copy of the manuscript exchanged hands and a lie was born.

Who’s going to know Dong-joo stole the manuscript that turned his life around? It’s certainly not Mystery Boy — who is now in a coma. Even after Mystery Boy wakes up two months later, he has no recollection of who he is or anything that happened in his past. So Dong-joo’s secret is safe. For now.

But even if he’s amnesic, Mystery Boy is not your average guy. He has phytokinetic powers, he teleports, and he can stop time! And most importantly, he can hear (and physically feel) when people are in pain and communicate with them in his mind. Basically, he’s like a super-powered empath, and since he can’t remember anything, it’s hard to say if these powers are a post-accident development, or if he’s had them all along.

Amnesiac Bae Hyun Sung Gets One Step Closer To Finding His Identity In “Miraculous Brothers”

Jul 5, 2023
by E. Cha

Will Kang Mal Geum be the key to Bae Hyun Sung’s lost memories in “Miraculous Brothers”?

JTBC’s “Miraculous Brothers” is a new mystery drama about Yook Dong Joo, an aspiring writer with tons of debt who is searching for the truth (played by Jung Woo), and Kang San, a young man who gets into an accident that robs him of his memory—but leaves him with unique supernatural powers (played by Bae Hyun Sung).

Spoilers

Previously on “Miraculous Brothers,” Kang San—who does not yet know his own name—woke up from a two-month coma caused by a car accident. The only thing he remembered about himself was that he was being chased by someone before his accident and that he had a bag with him, but he was unable to recall his name, age, or anything else about his identity or past.

All of Kang San’s attempts to figure out his identity also proved futile: he couldn’t even remember what had been inside his bag, which he guessed had been important to him, and the bag was ultimately stolen from him by Kai (Oh Man Seok), making it impossible for him to search it for clues. His fingerprints also weren’t found in the system, leading the authorities to believe that he was a minor.

However, in the drama’s upcoming third episode, Kang San finally finds new hope when he unexpectedly runs into someone who remembers him. In the hospital, Chae Woo Jung (Kang Mal Geum) is unable to hide her shock when she sees Kang San, leading him to ask her in surprise, “Do you know me, by any chance?”

The producers of “Miraculous Brothers” teased, “In today’s episode, Woo Jung will be overwhelmed by shock after recognizing the boy. However, their relationship is very complex. Please tune in to learn the reason why.”

To find out what Chae Woo Jung knows about Kang San—and why she is so shocked to see him—catch the third episode of “Miraculous Brothers” on July 5 at 10:30 p.m. KST!

Miraculous Brothers: Episodes 3-4

by quirkycase

Our newest literary sensation finds himself the reluctant guardian of the still unidentified superpowered teen. Their first order of business is figuring out who the heck this kid is and where he came from, but that’s easier said than done. Meanwhile, our writer realizes he might’ve gotten in over his head when the fictional novel he claimed might not be so fictional after all.

EPISODES 3-4

There’s still a lot going on, but this week’s episodes went at a slightly less feverish pace. With the setup out of the way, we now dive into the crux of the story and start to see how our multiple mysteries align. Like @unit, I wasn’t particularly into the murder mystery of the premiere week episodes – I feel like I’m drowning in drama investigations recently – but now that it’s more clearly linked to the central characters, I found my interest peaked. But it’s Dong-joo and Mystery Boy’s unique situation and developing relationship that I’m really enjoying.

After successfully passing off the manuscript as his own, Dong-joo’s guilty conscience and anxiety is manifesting in nightmares, awkward interviews about his book, and an aversion to his newfound fame. So far, Dong-joo is skating by on vagueness and outright lies, but it’s bound to catch up with him sooner or later.

As for Mystery Boy, he’s got a problem – he’s being discharged from the hospital, but he has nowhere to go since his identity is still a mystery. His extremely kind doctor LEE SOO-YEON (Lee Ji-hyun) truly goes above and beyond, offering to let him stay with her and her family. But Mystery Boy decides he’d rather inconvenience his new hyung who is the only person he can be around without setting off his empathy powers. Dong-joo grumbles about it, but Mystery Boy is determined and stubborn, so Dong-joo gets a new roommate.

I already love the dynamic between these two who settle into a comfortable relationship almost right away. Dong-joo is the nagging, lecturing hyung who complains about everything, while Mystery Boy is the demanding yet endearing dongsaeng who always ends up getting what he wants. Mystery Boy may be an empath with no memory, but he’s no pushover. He’s direct and honest with a stubborn streak, and he loves winding up his new hyung.

Mystery Boy, who decides to call himself Ki-jeok (which means “miracle”), is still struggling to piece together his identity and past. He has occasional flashes of memory, but nothing concrete. Everything points to him being from the past like his unfamiliarity with everyday tech and his knowledge of old-school music. Then, there’s the woman he runs into in the hospital who looks like she’s seen a ghost. She says he resembles an old friend who’s her age (a high school classmate named Kang San) and leaves him her card. Oddly, just like Dong-joo, she’s veiled to his empathy powers.

The cast is amazing... :approves:

ep 2

So, that mysterious man appeared at the end of the second episode.

I didnt understand if the Miracle Boy put the backpack in that locker or if it was someone else.

The detective JS is a bit shady and maybe  he is just incompetent.

The female detective is smart and not annoying.  :D

Her partner, that senior detective, he seems to be conducting his own investigation.

The story becomes more and more interesting.

The crime flashback scene...The girl just watched as those students beat that homeless man and HN.

That was strange.

I wonder if DJ and the Miracle Boy are somehow related...DJ lived in that neighborhood

where the crime happened 27 years ago.

I didnt expect their bickering to be so funny...  :D

Miraculous Brothers: Episodes 5-6

by quirkycase

Our fake-it-‘til-you-make-it writer begins piecing the clues of multiple mysteries together and is shocked at what he finds. While said writer investigates old cases and new faces, our superpowered teen is piecing together some clues of his own through flashes of his returning memory. The duo begin to butt heads over their very different perspectives and ideas on how to move forward, especially when the return of our empath’s memory might just be our writer’s undoing.

EPISODES 5-6

We knew 1995 was pivotal, but everything leads back to that fateful year. Ki-jeok and Dong-joo might not have met so randomly after all because Ki-jeok knew Dong-joo’s father CHAN-SUNG. In one of Ki-jeok’s increasingly common memory flashbacks, he recalls Chan-sung handing him the backpack and sending him out the back door of his bookstore. That was the night of the accident. Chan-sung seemed to be hiding Ki-jeok from the police and told Ki-jeok not to trust anyone. It’s likely no coincidence – is anything a coincidence in K-dramas? – that Chan-sung died in a hit and run soon after.

Dong-joo does more digging and starts putting names to the initials used in the book for the murderers. The first name he lands on is his frenemy Myung-seok’s older brother Tae-man who has started taking even more of an interest in him (that can’t bode well). The more he learns, Dong-joo is at a loss given the insane situation he’s in as the fraud author of a secret true crime novel and the happenstance guardian of a superpowered, time-traveling teenage amnesiac. He’s desperate to tell someone and tests the waters by sharing the Ki-jeok part of his story, disguising it as a new novel idea, with BFF Yong-dae and is stunned when Yong-dae calls it boring. What it really needs is a serial killer to spice things up and sell copies. LOL.

Meanwhile, Hyun-soo is growing more suspicious of Dong-joo. She glimpses the original copy of the manuscript in Dong-joo’s office and sneaks a photo of Kai’s note. Although Dong-joo isn’t an official suspect yet – it’s not like they can arrest him for writing a novel – Hyun-soo and Byung-man manage to convince the department to investigate the link between the 1995 murder case and the recent cases. So before long, Dong-joo is going to have more explaining to do.

Miraculous Brothers: Episodes 9-10

by quirkycase

No longer able to maintain all his lies, our writer tries honesty on for a change and prepares himself to face the consequences. Not only is he juggling a plagiarism scandal, mysterious meetings, and hunting for clues, but he’s also got an angry superpowered teen to take care of. Meanwhile, said teen digs deeper into his unique situation and starts to attract unwanted attention.

EPISODES 9-10

This week, Dong-joo’s not-so-carefully constructed lies start crumbling around him. His greatest fear comes true when an article is released about him plagiarizing. Myung-seok couldn’t get the director’s family to sell the rights to the screenplay Dong-joo supposedly plagiarized, and they refuse to settle – they want to take Dong-joo to court. Since he did plagiarize (from someone else), he of course doesn’t have the receipts to exonerate himself.

Myung-seok suspects the plagiarism might be true, but he really doesn’t care so long as his publishing house doesn’t get dragged into Dong-joo’s mess. His solution is for Dong-joo to create evidence, but falsifying documents is a step too far for Dong-joo. Then, help arrives from an unexpected source: Hye-kyung. Hearing about the pending lawsuit, she digs up dirt on the director and passes it along to Tae-man to give to his brother.

Now that Kang-san has recovered much of his memory, it’s time for him and Dong-joo to have a serious discussion. Dong-joo realizes he can’t keep lying, especially not if he truly cares about Kang-san, and finally comes clean about stealing Ha-neul’s manuscript from Kang-san’s backpack. Dong-joo swallows Kang-san’s anger and disappointment, more worried about Kang-san finding out about Kai’s murderous revenge plan than anything else. Because while he’s honest about the rest, Dong-joo can’t bring himself to tell Kang-san about Kai yet, even though he has a meeting with him the following day.

Dong-joo is tense when they meet, expecting to face an enemy. Instead, Kai tells him he’s not upset about the novel and has no plans to out him as a fraud. He only wanted to warn Dong-joo about the danger the novel puts him in and even apologizes. Dong-joo wants to work together to find the videotape – his father was killed because of all this – but Kai is not the teamwork type. Plus, he doesn’t want Dong-joo in further danger.

Dong-joo tries to tell Kai the insane-sounding truth about Kang-san, which of course Kai doesn’t believe. When Dong-joo swears his little brother really is living with him, Kai leaves him with a, “how do you know I’m Ha-neul?” It seems like he’s just trying to get Dong-joo to back off, but he does later visit an elderly man he calls “father” and calls himself Chang-eun. I still think he’s Ha-neul, but this man has a lot of secret identities.

Despite Kai’s skepticism, he can’t get Dong-joo’s assertions about Kang-san out of his head. After spending some time brooding while staring at his magic rock (aha, he is the one who has the glowing rock!), he decides to check things out for himself. He stakes out Dong-joo’s house and sees Kang-san with his own eyes, tearing up while he watches Kang-san from the shadows.

Kang-san, meanwhile, has been busy catching up on everything that’s been hidden from him, starting with the novel. He stays up all night reading, angry and heartbroken over what his brother has been through. Kang-san takes a trip to the cursed lake where yet another body surfaces, but this one seems old. Kang-san has a brief vision of a man being stabbed by someone with a cross tattoo on his hand. When the cops arrive, they find Lee Ha-neul’s student ID with the body.

Even without knowing about the ID, Kang-san is overwhelmed by everything and breaks down once he gets back home to a worried Dong-joo. He lets Dong-joo comfort him, and then Dong-joo promises they’ll solve the mystery and bring the perpetrators of the 1995 case to justice together. Kang-san opens up about his time at the abhorrent children’s home and the evil pastor who ran it. The tattoo he saw in his vision looked just like the cross on the wall of that repentance room; it’s also the same tattoo Dong-joo saw on the wrist of the man who approached him recently, the one who saw Kang-san disappear through that wormhole.

Bae Hyun Sung And Jung Woo Confess The Unbelievable Truth To Park Yoo Rim In “Miraculous Brothers”

Aug 2, 2023
by S. Kim

Bae Hyun Sung decides to come clean about his time slip ability to Park Yoo Rim in “Miraculous Brothers”!

JTBC’s “Miraculous Brothers” is a mystery drama about Yook Dong Joo (Jung Woo), an aspiring writer with tons of debt who is searching for the truth, and Kang San (Bae Hyun Sung), a young man who gets into an accident that robs him of his memory—but leaves him with unique supernatural powers.

Spoilers

Previously, Yook Dong Joo and Lee Kang San took a step closer to finding the truth. The bones found in Lake Sopyeong belonged to a person who was killed by “the man with the cross tattoo” (Baek Seung Chul) whom Kang San saw through his psychic powers, and that man was related to the organization that runs the orphanage where brothers Kang San and Ha Neul grew up when they were young. Meanwhile, detective Park Hyun Soo (Park Yoo Rim) checked Kang San’s photo from the student record book from 1995. Kang San’s face in the photo looked identical to his current face, but due to the 27 year gap, Hyun Soo did not think that they are the same person.

Amidst this situation, Dong Joo and Kang San decide to confess to Hyun Soo about Kang San’s time slip ability. When Hyun Soo holds up her phone to show them Kang San’s photo from his student record book, Kang San tells her, “I came from 27 years ago,” and Dong Joo also admits that it is true.

In the next image below, the three check something on the laptop together.

The production team remarked, “Even if Hyun Soo has already checked Kang San’s student records, it is difficult for her to believe Dong Joo and Kang San’s stories about psychic powers and time slips. However, if a miraculous thing such as these miraculous brothers successfully persuading Hyun Soo occurs, the detective’s intelligence and investigative power can add forces to their journey of finding the truth. Please keep an eye on whether the cooperation between the three will come to fruition.”

The next episode of “Miraculous Brothers” will air on August 2 at 10:30 p.m. KST. Stay tuned!

Miraculous Brothers: Episodes 11-12

by quirkycase

As the number of people making connections between the past and present continues to grow, key players start making their moves. Our writer’s priorities have been steadily shifting from saving his own skin to keeping his superpowered teen safe. And to his consternation, his teen’s penchant for extreme truth-telling and zeal for justice is wearing off on him. Meanwhile, our vengeful witness begins the next phase in his plan.

EPISODES 11-12

For how much focus is put on solving the 1995 case and its subsidiaries, there’s little to show for it. I get doling out info a little at a time, but I feel like this mystery is unraveling at a snail’s pace. So much time is spent revealing one piece of information character by character that it feels like we’re at a standstill. This week, everyone is still on the hunt for the video that no one can find but everyone now knows about. At least Dong-joo and Kang-san do get something useful from Hye-kyung’s gift. On the USB is a spreadsheet chronicling Tae-man’s extensive bribery over the years.

Hye-kyung is betting a lot on Dong-joo using the intel wisely because if he leaks it publicly, she could go down too since her club is the room where it all happened. It’s uncharacteristic for Hye-kyung to put her fate in someone else’s hands like this, but she too owes Dong-joo’s father, so she’s trusting Dong-joo to play justice warrior. Lucky for Hye-kyung, he proves savvy enough to hold onto the info for now. Naïve Kang-san wants to publicize it immediately, but Dong-joo is world-weary enough to know that the corrupt dealings would just be swept under the rug. Better to save it for a rainy day when they need some insurance.

Finally, Dong-joo and Kang-san are on the same page and ready to be real partners in crime-busting. But as usual, Kang-san has the upper hand with Dong-joo and only agrees to stay out of danger if Dong-joo agrees to not keep secrets. Except there’s still one big secret: Kai.

Although Kai’s secret-identity days might be coming to an end. I thought Myung-nam already knew Kai was Ha-neul, but he had no clue until the police showed him an aged-up sketch of Ha-neul. When they next meet, they do a round of, “No, I’m sorrier!” as they both regret the cowardice that led Myung-nam not to act when he witnessed the murder and Ha-neul not to step forward when he knew Myung-nam was innocent. And now, Myung-nam feels responsible for Kai stepping into the role of avenger.

Two years ago, after he’d found the fake witness’s body in the woods where Jong-il’s lackey hung him, Myung-nam had relied on Kai to help him scrub his traces from the scene and ensure he didn’t get falsely accused again. That murder was one too many for Kai to bear, and it was then he decided to spread his revenge wings and fly.

Now, Myung-nam tries to convince Kai to stop his mission and lead a normal life. They can farm together, and Kai can read all the books he wants. Because he knows Kai is a good kid and should be free of this. The relationship between these two wronged and broken people is sweet, so I just know Myung-nam is in danger. And sure enough, he’s the baddies’ next target.

Speaking of the baddies, they’re still chugging along but not much has changed. Tae-man is still evil-ing it up and terrorizing his friends and enemies. Myung-seok might just be the only person who doesn’t fear or loath him. After learning that his brother might be involved in the 1995 case that Dong-joo knows way too much about, Myung-seok lays it on thick to try to butter up Dong-joo. He disturbs Dong-joo with his out-of-character apology and then gifts him an expensive (bugged) watch. Dong-joo doesn’t buy his act one bit and regifts the watch immediately to Yong-dae. Unfortunately, he and Yong-dae then discuss the elusive videotape that got Dong-joo’s father killed and how Jong-il covered everything up. So now Myung-seok knows everything, and it’s anyone’s guess what he’ll do about it.

While we know what villains Tae-man and Jong-il are up to, the evil pastor is still largely a question mark. We do learn that his very profitable church, referred to as a cult by the cops, is bankrolled by some high-up players. At this point, it seems like their involvement in the case is likely driven by profit. Jong-il doesn’t strike me as the believer type, but his wife appears to be. She sent their daughter to the pastor (after the fake kidnapping) where she’s being “reformed.” Yikes.
